HOUSE OF MIRRORS - Thesis project 2018 - Gdansk, Poland

In today’s generation, our civilisation is working towards innovative environmental strategies; nevertheless, something is missing for human evolution to hit its potential. Perhaps we are focused in our physical surroundings, blinded to our ethical progressions towards cultural issues. The impact of economy, technology and politics are playing with our psychological ambiguity which this project aims to reflect.

Come all to the House of Mirrors, souls and the soulless, all are welcome in these reflective cell prisms. You may find affinity throughout the journey or you may want to reflect on the surrounding behaviours. Let the building guide you through the 21st century distractions all the way to its aspirations, be tempted and experience the maze of illusionary frames. Reality or fantasy this building gives a glimpse of the innermost existential desires of our century.

[4]

The constant importance of challenging the rhythm of the time with dynamic projects is a most in the architectural world.

With this in mind, I took a different approach by looking at theoretical projects and how could these influence the design process. Even though these bold and abstract ideas appear to stay mainly on paper, I believe they are a great source of inspiration to strengthen the concept of a project.

These conceptual models describe my first thoughts thinking of the building as a main circulation space. Where the individual can meander through different volumes and spaces as if the building itself became a new public realm.

An ‘anti-building’ which priorities its journey through a diagonal passage way. Some of these in between ‘voids’ could be permanent and some others temporary, giving the public the chance to adapt the space to the society’s desire in that specific period of time.

Given the deprived surrounding and the extravagance of its interior, the façade integrates and camouflages the building with its urban context.

The elevation carefully elaborates a set of patterned bricks which slowly degrade the closer it gets to the ground floor. By analysing the proportions of the existing building, the form of the windows were identified and replicated into the new façade, showing a stamp of the past in the new.

[12]

ROOF DAYLIGHT

Given the closed off facade, the only day light will be obtained through the roof waffle structure. This is distributed through the periphery as well as alternated skylights.

MICROCLIMATIC ROOF

Both extensive and intensive vegetation will encourage biodiversity and promote the natural habitat of the local climate.

DOME ORIENTATION

This specific position will give morning light to the entrance of the roof garden a symbolic atmosphere.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

Intentional contrast between artificial and natural light, both of these follow the pattern of the waffle roof.

PLANT ROOM

The existing basement will serve as the building’s maintenance area. A gap to the side of the facade will be added to distribute biomass palettes.

STACK VENTILATION

Heat recovery systems integrated in seating roof areas near the three towers will avoid the unpleasant aesthetics.

‘Symbiotic City’ is a new approach for Dolne Miasto, located in the south-eastern part of Gdansk. to create a network of interconnected, mutually beneficial communities to assist one another in a sustainable expansion. Inspired by walkable cities, each district has its daily activity surrounding the historic core, and each contains a unique monthly activity to bridge the gap between further settlements and the city centre.

By using parasitic and symbiotic building forms, we are able to bring an extra urban layer and retain all the existing buildings and heritage, unifying the built forms into a coherent whole.

Co-Hartley jam yard proposes a new co-living principle into an old work-living neighbourhood. Hartley Village having an extended history with their distinguished jam factory, their current infrastructure has blend into warehouses misusing the potential of the site. Taking into consideration the old courtyard provided to the workers of the factory, this project brings a new courtyard with cultivate-your-own fragments

Co-Hartley combines industrial buildings and traditional 19 C. housing, with a diverse set of terrace and semi-detached units.

Community involvement in urban regeneration has proven to play an important part in local public affairs. Granby4Streets Community Land Trust is a non-profit community-based organisation run by volunteers. Faced with the decline and dereliction of the Granby area, Granby4Streets Community Land Trust, aimed originally to stop the demolition of the remaining Victorian houses in the Granby Triangle. Today the CLT, as a locally driven, controlled and democratically accountable structure, intends to create a vibrant mixed community, building on the existing creativity, energy and commitment, where people from all walks of life can live, work and play.

After several meetings with the community committee, we proposed a small-scale architecture that could adapt to their different needs.

EASA (European Architecture Student Assembly)

EASA is a space for the exchange of ideas and knowledge with European architecture students. Where students can discuss their ideas, share their experiences related to architecture, education and life in general. EASA bases its activity on meetings that are held throughout the year in different parts of Europe. Its purpose is to offer an alternative training through workshops, travelling exhibitions, conferences, publications and an efficient communication at international level.

Given my excitement to be involved in such a network, I became the National Contact for EASA Spain. My role was to be the representative of the country in international meetings as well as promote and recruite participants in a national scale. In addition, as EASA was established in 1981, there is a group of individuals including myself who manage the Archive of past events.

The project of La Penta was not contained to the two weeks of the official workshop days. Before this, we spent two weekends at the site to explore, theorize and concretize further details about the construction design. We also spent time at the site and had the opportunity to work in the Domaine des Gorges to help our hosts in their activities. By doing that, we got a better grasp of the site and the concept of permaculture.

DOCEXDOCE began in 2017 as a unique competition for architecture students and young professionals. Using exciting and experimental formats, DOCEXDOCE encourages participants to propose solutions for a given contemporary problem.

Since early 2020, I became a main organisers for the first edition of DOCEXDOCE India. Given the fact that is a competition free of charge, one of my main roles was to search for sponsors and partners who would wish to collaborate with the Indian edition. This experience gave me the opportunity to multi-task by managing sponsors, jurors, ambassadors and general public. It was a great challenge as it tested my leading skills as well as the importance of constant communication with everyone involved.
