CTU Residence Hall

Semester: 5 (2011-2012) Location: Prague - Dejvice Pata design studio (semester project) Bachelor’s thesis: Preliminary drawings The residence hall is situated in the northeast edge of the site. The footprint of the dorm building takes up almost one third of the site. On the rest of the site there’s a park designed. Under it there’s a two storey parking garage. The residence hall is an eight storey building with one underground storey. There’s a gym, laundry room, storage rooms and a student club on the underground floor. For the purpose of supplying connects underground storey every part of the building. Vertical circulation connects the underground floor with every level of the building because of supply purposes. On the first floor there’s a cafe, vertically connected to a student club.On the first floor a reception and manager’s offices can be also found. The levels from the 2nd floor up are designed for student accommodation. System of the accomodation is suitable for different demands of the students. There are several types of rooms for 240 accommodated students available.

CTU Residence Hall

Semester 6 (2011-2012) Location: Prague - Dejvice Pata design studio (Bachelor’s thesis) The whole object of the dormitory was divided into two construction stages. Because of the extent of the whole project only the southern part of the building was solved into detail. The building’s load bearing system is designed as a reinforced concrete column / wall system combination. The building’s enclosure is designed as a composite shell, containing architectural concrete. This concrete cloak is partially covered by a glass facade. The glass facade unifies the appearance of the building and partially reflects the sky. The randomly distributed pushed out windows give a dynamic expression to the building. The reason for having a secondary glass facade is not only aesthetic, but also helps regulate the solar heat energy.

The main workshop topic was a revitalisation of sports facilities and their sustainability. This one week long workshop took place at FA CTU. The workshop was divided into two parts. The first part was theoretical, the second practical. The theoretical part featured prof. Geraint John, prof. Ing. arch. Arnost Navratil, Prof. Jorg Jopien, etc. The practical part of the workshop was supervised by prof. ing. arch. Arnošt Navrátil and his assistants. The main goal was to find a solution to to a number of problems of the outdated stadium in Vrsovice, a district of Prague. Synot Tip Arena is a stadium, which belongs to a soccer team Bohemians 1905. The stadium is not meeting the principles and requirements of sustainability. The new concept of the stadium is larger than its original. It is very ecological, mainly built out of wood or recycled materials. The stadium is clad with wooden boards and the whole supporting structure is made out of glued timber beams. These materials make the stadium easy to modify and modernize.

Moduly se zasouvají do spodní části základny a tam se montují k sobě. Smontované díly se pomocí hydrauliky vyzdvihnou o výšku dalšího dílu. Cyklus se opakuje.

Main challenge of this task was revitalization of the Zbraslav quarry. From lecturers was given several transverse walls which created several slots. Each of these slots supposed to be programmed by architecture. Every student selected one slot and found for it optimal function. This slot is 12 m wide, 20 m high and 650 m long. Selected function for this slot was depository of geological samples with laboratories and science the workplaces. Building is divided into two parts. First part is open to the public (geological museum) and the second part is only for employees (laboratories and science).

Apartment building in Velká Úpa (2011) Location: Velká Úpa Design of the apartment building for a private investor The design of the building is influenced by the surrounding landscape. The compact mass of the house is proportionaly longitudinal. The building is partially imbedded within the ground. Together with quite large window volumes the obect appears smaller than it really is. The main materials are wood, metal and stone, refering to the traditional folk mountain architecture.

rACING & TESTING CIRCUIT with a RACE CAR DEVELOPMENT CENTER CIKÁNKA Semester 7 (2013) Location: cikánka quarry - Prague Kotas design studio CTU semester project Teamwork with Jan Sochor MOTOR SPORTS TODAY Today‘s tendencies in sports and other entertainment areas are aiming towards integration into multifunctional arenas, with an emphasis on visual attractiveness and the close feel of what‘s happening during the show. Motorsports have generally been lacking this compact format of presentation. Circuits or race tracks require a lot of space, so they are being built mostly on flat land, which enables the spectators to see only a fraction of the whole race, usually one to two turns. One example of an arena trend developing is car shows and races taking place in football stadiums, mostly in Northern America. OUR VISION Our goal in this project was to take the idea of a closed space, a natural arena, and use it for hosting not only car shows and small races, but also bigger events such as formula, DTM cars (or similar), or motorbike races. Our goal was to create an automatically distinctive and unique place. This factor is vitally important for commercial use of the whole project. As examples of such instantly recognizable places, we can name the Monte Carlo circuit, with race cars running up and down the city streets and along the marina. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit, flowing between the hills in a picturesque landscape. The Abu Dhabi circuit, located in a desert by the sea. These all can be instantly recognized, when seen on any picture or during a live TV stream from a race, taking place there, which makes them immeasurably more attractive. FINDING A PERFECT PLACE The first challenge of fulfilling our vision was to find a place with suitable terrain configuration. We were looking for a place not far from Prague, Czech Republic, with a connection to a highway, leading both to the centre of Prague and to the airport. Ultimately, we found the perfect place in quarry Cikánka, located west just by the highway circle around Prague. This project is to show a vision of how to convert the quarry, after it‘s been mined out in the future. The project has the ambition to present an idea of changes, that could be happening to motor sports. THE QUARRY The quarry Cikánka lies just by the western boarder of the city Prague in an area full of rocky hills. The quarry itself is divided

by the road into the larger southern quarry and smaller northern one. It‘s adjacent to an industrial space in the eastern part of the whole area, where there‘s cement works, that currently lives off the quarry. Once the quarry has been mined out, the cement works lose its purpose. The whole area is surrounded by a set of woods, some of them protected by law as „natural parks“, important for the regional ecosystem. The only near settlement is a village Kosoř, lying about half a kilometer far from the southern boundary of the quarry. The area is best accessible by car, lying 15 minutes drive from the Prague airport and about 17 minutes drive to the city centre. It is also accessible by the buses of Prague public transport. The cement works have a railroad attached, now used for material transportation. URBAN PLANNING There are two major functions required for the project in the area. A circuit and development centre for CTU Prague‘s race cars. For financial profit, additional functions are implemented to increase the versatility to the project: An adrenaline amusement park, space for car shows, concerts, outdoor exhibitions, kart circuit, minibikes. THE CIRCUIT is placed in the southern quarry. THE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE with a carbon fibre body parts factory is placed in the place of the former cement works. For financial savings we are taking use of some of the large column system halls of the former factory, only reconstructing them to host the factory. Other parts of the development centre will be newly built. THE AMUSEMENT PARK is located in the east most part of the whole area behind the factory. It hosts various adrenaline attractions, such as climbing, paintball and such. A kart circuit for public is also designed. There are three access points. The main access is from the plaza with a public bus stop at the road that divides the northern and southern quarry. The second one from the village Kosoř, public transport also included. The third one is by the amusement park, with bus and train connection to the city.

FLOATING RESTORATION WORKSHOP Semester 8 (2014) Location: Prague - Vltava river Hájek design studio CTU semester project There is a large number of unused barges in the Holešovice river port. I tried to find a new utilization for one of those discarded cargo boats. The dismantled casco is adapted for the purposes of a floating restoration workshop. The restorers will be able to repair the types of monuments, which are accessible only from the water. The boat is equipped with laboratories, workshops, lecture hall and staff accommodation. There’s also a supporting pontoon kit onboard, that will be used for repairs in the shallows.
