EXHIBITION PLAN
THE DESIGN PROCESS MATERIALIZED Design is messy, back-and-forth, frustrating, and fun, but also vital to solving our society’s most pressing issues. The Architectural Congress of Ohio Pavilion supports the questioning, research, collaborating, making, and sharing of forward thinkers. By allowing the main phase of the creative process to manifest itself in the built environment, it catalyzes the creative process. Establishing visual connections allows visitors to observe the design process in its entirety. Spaces readily adapt to meet the needs of both individual and collaborative thinking. The sequences of spaces physically recreates the mapping of the design process. Design is not linear. There is no start or end. Discoveries inspire new questions and the design cycle begins again.

ELM PLACE
NORTH 8TH STREET
This historic train depot was built in 1902 by Daniel Burnham. After locomotives were no longer the most popular mode of transportation, the building was left abandoned for decades. With a new owner, the old depot will be renovated and brought back to life. After participating in a design charrette with the Richmond community, I decided to pursue the design of a microbrewery based on the information and excitement gathered from the local residents.
NORTH D STREET
NEW PROGRAM The brewery is designed to occupy the entire depot building. The free standing single story building to the east of the main structure, will house the brewing equipment. The main building focuses on the large bar located on the north end of the building where locals can sit facing the train tracks, which locomotives still frequent. A large white floating staircase attracts the eye and connects the first and second floor, contrasting the old brick and the new earth tone materials. A retail shop is located on the first floor, selling home-brew equipment, bottled beer, growlers, t-shirts, etc. With a kitchen on each floor, the upper space is available for rent for catered events, such as wedding receptions or conferences. The separate entrance allows for this banquet hall to be occupied even when the brewery below is not open.

PEASLEE NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER LOCATION: Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio PROJECT: Living Building Challenge Mixed-Use, Smart Growth, Community Engagement
23
24
EQUITY Working with the volunteers who run the Peaslee Neighborhood Center in Over-theRhine, we designed a plan to address some of the challenges they were facing. This plan includes the development of a new community hub - based on Living Building Challenge principles. This new hub, not only aids Peaslee’s existing community programs, but also includes partnerships with other neighboring programs and businesses to creative one cohesive center. Included on the map are local business we hope to partner with, who could really make an impact on this community.
25
ENERGY Assuming typical construction methods and practices, we focused on maximizing the efficiency of the south facing atrium. By using direct-current photovoltaic fans, circulated air is moved upward to be vented. The design of the open atrium also allows for a connection to each floor, increasing the air quality not only in the atrium - but of the entire building - creating one cohesive system in both the living and working spaces.
