A SERIES OF ROOMS Possibilities of the void in Antwer p’s Linkeroever
Master thesis in Landscape and Urbanism Politecnico di Torino Supervisors: Nicola Russi (PoliTO) and Susanne Pietsch (TU Delft) A series of rooms focuses on the importance of the project of void in contemporary urban renewal. The research is based in Antwerp’s district of Linkeroever, characterized by a strong persistence of voids at any scale, from landscape to urban. The process leading to the project of the void has been developed through three fundamental moments. First, the analysis and identification of the porosity already existing and consolidated in the territory. Second, the definition, within this porosity, of a system of voids at different scales that establishes new spatial continuities. Crossing the different parts of the city and the territory means overcoming its geographical, political and symbolic boundaries. Lastly, the characterization and qualification of the single voids, or “rooms”, through the project of the ground and vegetation. This system of voids is meaningful regardless of the built, but for its inherent capacity to be infrastructure, background and support of planned and unplanned activities.

PISCINA MIRABILIS Contemporary Art musem in an ancient Roman Cistern
REUSE The Roman Ruin Competition, Bacoli (Naples) Reuse Italy [www.reuseitaly.com] Honors: 2nd Prize Isotropy and flexibility. The exhibition itinerary of the new museum Piscina Mirabilis develops without providing a monodirectional path, preferring instead a visual, spatial and movement experience in every direction. This project has been developed with the intent to preserve the original spaces and proportions of the ancient Roman cistern. The light-coloured stone interior flooring is designed to include a modular system that can accommodate the various devices used for the exhibition. The most of the project is developed outdoor, and it is based on four main items: a tower-mirador, a large public square, a bar-restaurant, and a bookshop. The large public square is placed above the cistern’s roof. The pavement is partially lifted to ensure that the Roman remains underneath be fully preserved. The square grid flooring is developed to perfectly match the modules of the pillars and the skylights beneath. The glass panels, placed over the skylights, ensures visual continuity between the square and the museum below and proper natural lighting for the exhibition.

INTERIOR BUILDING CITY Cooking workshop and apartament in Ixelles, Bruxelles
MSc 1 - Interiors Buildings Cities Technische Universiteit Delft Supervisors: Susanne Pietsch, Daniel Rosebottom The project is set in the district of Ixelles in Brussels. The main theme is the corner building, as the urban void where the project is going to be set is inserted at the junction of two streets that intersect at an acute angle. The shape of the plot makes that the building is related to the street through three facades. The facade is interpreted not as a two-dimensional layer, but as a proper object that connects the interiors to the city. On the ground floor there is a cooking workshop, which faces the neighbourhood through large windows. On the first floor there is a very small restaurant, very exclusive and without any tables but only a big counter. Finally, going up the stairs, there is a large private apartment on two floors. The main point of the building is to interpret the concept of food and cuisine in three different declinations: cooking workshop, restaurant and private kitchen. From public to semi-public to private. From the industrial kitchen to the small domestic stove. From the community counter to the tea table.

NO-MAT ARCHITECTURE Coliving + Cinema in Turin
Architectural technology and urban design studio Politecnico di Torino Supervisor: Nicola Paolo Russi No-mat Architecture is a design experiment the theme of which is the study of an innovative concept of housing based on the principles of the coliving. No-mat refers to an architecture without a doormat, that is devoid of what in traditional living symbolizes the boundary between public and private space. The name also refers to the architectural typology designed, the tower, which in the range of adoptable solutions is located at the opposite end of the mat building, a building that extends in a widespread manner in the territory by raising one or a few floors above the ground. The choice to concentrate the volume in a portion of the building plot stems from the desire to free up space on the ground, to give the city a system of squares designed in relation to the surrounding public space. Including an attractive function in the program - a cinema - the project opens itself at the city becoming a dynamic place of encounter and exchange at different scales.

RESIDE Mixed housing in Worli Koliwada, Mumbai.
RESIDE Mumbai Competition Arch Out Loud [www.archoutloud.com] Honors: Director’s Choice Award The international debate about Smart cities result in the improvement of the quality of urban life as well as the spread of non-places, that do not respect the culture and the history of the site in which they are located. Reside is not a step backwards from Smart city, but it is the project of the city of tomorrow firmly believing that architecture should be at the human scale and respectful of the context in which it is set. The project consists in the development of a new part of the city with various and innovative housing types, but very related to local architecture. The ground floors are reserved for the native fishermen (Koli) with spaces designed by re-proposing their traditional houses. The apartments on the upper floors are larger and more spacious, reserved for the wealthier middle class that has long been starting to settle in this area of the city. Strategies for improve the sustainability of the city are long term approaches, such as replacement of automobiles by public transport, and renew the infrastructure into several public spaces.
