Add sizzle to your kitchen makeover Start with lighting and repainting Megan Cole The Canadian Press VICTORIA — Saying goodbye to an ’80s kitchen can be as easy as applying a coat of paint, modernizing lighting and installing stone countertops. Though kitchen renovations can often require a serious financial investment, painting kitchen cabinets is a relatively inexpensive way to give the space a new look, says Lana Lounsbury, Victoria interior designer. “If you’ve got old wood cabinets that are beat up or need to be refinished, painting them can bring them up to date,” says Lounsbury. But she warns that homeowners should be aware of the kind of wood their cabinets are made of before they paint them, and what kind
of paint they use. “You cannot paint oak — the grain is too deep — and when you put lacquer over it they look fake and gross because you can still see the grain,” she says. “Homeowners should also contemplate having them professionally sprayed in a booth to avoid having the marks of brushes and rollers seen in the end product.” Lounsbury says homeowners shouldn’t cut costs on paint and are advised to use a high-quality, semigloss sheen after applying a primer. While quartz, stone and marble countertops can be a major investment in a kitchen, an impact can be made by installing a new countertop on a smaller space like an island. “If you go to any of the granite or marble yards, they might have offcuts of other jobs and you could buy pieces,” says Lounsbury. “But I would say when it comes to marble and stone you should pay for it.”

Homes Easy updates Continued from F1 Marina Hildebrand, an interior designer in Regina, and Lounsbury both say updating lighting fixtures can change the look of a kitchen. According to Hildebrand, homeowners are replacing the ’90s trend of three small pendant fixtures with two more dramatic lights. “Lighting is dramatic and pretty inexpensive considering the options out there right now,” she says. Lounsbury points out that a mix of ambient and task lighting is important in a kitchen. Incorporating colour and pattern in a kitchen is another effective way to update the space and Hildebrand says this can be done using fabric on chairs and bar stools. “Get some new chairs and if they are inexpensive, get them reupholstered,” she says. “You don’t have to choose expensive fabrics. You can go to the fabric store and pick out some wow stuff, and create a bit of punch.” For homeowners who have more experience in home renovations, or who are interested in learn-
ing, Hildebrand says including a new backsplash in the kitchen can make an impact. “There are so many products online and at home improvement stores that are pretty inexpensive, but they still require a bit of skill,” she says. “Many home improvement stores offer classes on tiling if homeowners are willing to invest some time.” Both Hildebrand and Lounsbury say there are many ways homeowners can update their kitchens on their own, but they should be aware of their own skills and abilities when it comes to home improvement. Homeowners shouldn’t overestimate their skill because if they tackle projects out of their comfort zone it could take away from the final result, notes Hildebrand. “Sometimes they just need to come to terms with what they have and recognize that a lot of the world would love to have our problems with out-of-date kitchens. Maybe sometimes smaller is better because homeowners can afford to treat their space well, and that is well-appointed and well done.”

Q: I have an Arborite countertop in my bathroom which needs rejuvenating. Can you give me the name of a product to help my counter? A: If replacing your countertop is not an option, you can purchase products that will help improve its appearance. You will need to buy a wax-based sealer in paste (such as Minwax), liquid or spray form (such as Gel Gloss). Since you are not preparing food on the counter, you can also use auto wax. Whichever product you choose, test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure that you are satisfied with the results. Before applying the wax product, scrub the counter with a combination of baking soda and dish soap. Rinse with water and let dry. Q: I have red circular marks left on my vinyl floor from a wroughtiron plant stand. I have tried everything I can think of to remove the marks. Can you help? A: In a measuring cup, combine one-quarter teaspoon (1 millilitre) dish soap and half cup (125 mL) water. Pour onto the affected area. Next, combine one-quarter cup (60 mL) three-per-cent hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) household ammonia. Blot and cover the area with plastic wrap and pile a heavy pan on top of the plastic. Leave for 8 hours. Remove pan and plastic. Scrub area with a damp scrubby pad and rinse. Test this remedy on an inconspicuous area first. Q: Is there an easy way to dust pleated horizontal fabric blinds without having to remove them from the windows? Thank you. A: The easiest solution for dusting fabric blinds is to use the brush head attachment on your vacuum. Dust the blinds every few weeks to keep dirt from collecting between the slats. To reduce the amount of dust that settles on your blinds, swipe a fabric softener sheet along each row (this repels airborne dust). You can also use dry sponges, a good quality microfibre cloth, or a static duster — all of which are efficient at collecting dust. Once in a while, you will want to give your blinds a thorough cleaning (check with your manufacturer’s guidelines to see if the blinds can tolerate water). When this day comes, remove the blinds from the windows. Line your bathtub with rags. Pour a few drops of liquid dish soap into the tub and fill will water. Set the blinds inside the tub and let them soak for at least 5 minutes to loosen dirt. Drain tub and then using the shower head attachment to rinse blinds with water. Set blinds on towels until just damp and then hang to dry. Q: I have removed wallpaper from a bedroom wall with no problem. The problem is the remaining glue from the sizing that was used before I applied the wallpaper years ago. I have used hot water to no

The easiest solution for dusting fabric blinds is to use the brush head attachment on your vacuum. avail. I have also heard that vinegar and water will remove it. Help! A: Unlike 10 years ago, wallpaper removal does not have to be an annoying, tedious process, and I am happy for you that the wallpaper came off easily. When it comes to removing wallpaper, the secret is to arm yourself with the proper tools before beginning the project. Purchase a wallpaper perforating tool, which you will run in a circular motion all over your wallpaper to puncture little holes in it. Fill a garden sprayer with 1 1/2 gallons (6.8 litres) of hot water and add wallpaper enzyme stripper (that’s the key). Saturate the old paper with the solution. If you do not have access to a garden sprayer, use a spray bottle and add wallpaper enzyme stripper. After the wallpaper is nice and wet, leave it for 30 minutes and grab yourself a hot cup of coffee. During your coffee time, the enzymes will do their work loosening the wallpaper glue. Next, peel the paper. For the remaining glue, use a wet sponge and additional stripper to wash the wall. When the wallpaper is gone, clean the wall with T.S.P. (follow handling instructions on carton carefully) and water.
Feedback from Readers Who Care: ■■ I read about the lady who was having a problem cleaning her laminate floor. I also had this problem and tried different solutions recommended to me by the store where I purchased the flooring. No results. I phoned the manufacturers in Texas and they recommended cleaning with Windex Ammonia D. It worked wonders. I spray it on the floor and then mop it up. Try on a small area first. Fantastic Steak Marinade: ■■ Next time you find steak on sale at the store, whip up the following delicious marinade: One-third cup (80 mL) Worcestershire sauce, one cup (250 mL) Italian salad dressing, 1 teaspoon (5 millilitres) garlic powder, half teaspoon (2.5 mL) black pepper seasoning and one cup (250 mL) barbecue sauce. Yields enough to marinate two pounds (907 g) of sirloin steak. Put steaks and marinade into a sealable bag and refrigerate overnight or freeze. Or, make the marinade in a slow cooker, add steak and let cook throughout the day on low. I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming. Check out my website Reena.ca.

Women inspiring change
Power of pendant lighting enchants Anita Murray Postmedia News
mIKE HOLMES Make it Right
March 8 is International Women’s Day. I’m not a woman but I’m a dad of two daughters, have one granddaughter, and I work with women on the job site — one of my daughters included. So it’s important to me that women get the respect they deserve and the support they need. Every year International Women’s Day has a different theme. For example, last year it was to end violence against women; the year before that was about ending hunger and poverty. This year’s theme is inspiring change, and as someone who knows a thing or two about women in the trades, I know that they inspire change every day. But unfortunately, only 6.4 per cent of Canadian skilled trades workers were women in 2009; only one in 10 apprentices are women. Women are usually in the top 10 per cent of their class but they’re still the last to get hired, and when they do, men are twice as likely to get a better job offer. I hire women and it’s not just for TV appeal. I believe them to be better workers — they keep the men honest. Anyone who works in the trades is already a hero to me — girls, boys, young, old — because the work isn’t easy, it’s underappreciated, undervalued, and bottom line, it’s tough work that requires even tougher skin. But every time I go to a trade show or trade school and I see more and more women there, interested,
The Holmes Group
Sherry Holmes working on her father’s construction site as a member of his Make It Right Crew, and inspiring others to consider non-traditional careers. engaged and dedicated to doing the best at what they do, I’m hopeful about where this industry is headed. They say the trades are still a “man’s world” but that is starting to change. The truth is it was never a man’s world. The world of trades belongs to everyone, it always has, and that’s the bigger point. It was a woman who invented the first electric water heater — Ida Forbes. Women were also responsible for giving us the first circular saw used in a sawmill, windshield wipers, the dishwasher, and Kevlar, the stuff used to make bulletproof vests. A n d wh o k n ow s h ow many other inventions women had a hand in creating or developing that we will never know about? Remember, there was a time when women couldn’t own property, and that included patents. If a woman wanted a patent it belonged to her father or husband.
Women might not have always received the credit they deserve, but they have definitely influenced the skilled trades, and continue to do so. Inspiring change starts with people brave enough to step off the “traditional” path to do what they love — for real. But it’s not just women on the front lines; it’s also the institutions that support them, employers that will hire them, colleagues that will work with them, and educators who train them. I know women are ready. But is everyone else? Are we welcoming change, or resisting it and making it harder for anyone who dares to be more than what we expect them to be? M y d a u g h t e r, S h e r r y brought up a great point: “You can have a powerful opinion but it’s only powerful if you do something about it.” And for her, equality in power is not having to explain herself. If everyone
can do what they want to do why should she have to explain herself just because what she is doing isn’t traditional, for her. “I’m just going to do it,” is what she says. I can’t agree with her more. I’d like to see the day when a woman working as a plumber, electrician or carpenter isn’t something out of the ordinary, when she can walk into any trade, on any campus and in any classroom and not worry about being treated differently because of her gender — because yes, it still happens — and more importantly, not have to explain herself for the choices she’s made. Women working in the trades today are doing more than just their job. They are changing the world and the future — not just of other women, but for everyone. Pendant lighting has taken the design world by storm. With many options available today, the hanging fixtures bring custom style and personality to any space. Evolving from commercial uses to the now common open-concept floor plans of new and renovated homes, pendants have taken on a much more dramatic role. “Pendant lighting has become the jewelry or signature look in many spaces today,” says Laurie Jarvis of Unique Spaces in Ottawa. While its utilitarian function is still important, the vast selection of styles and sizes available “allows consumers, homeowners and the design trade to put their personal stamp on a room,” she says. “They’re almost sculptural to me,” adds decorator Kristi Blok of Ottawa’s Kiki Interiors. “They’re functional, but they’re also like an art piece in the space.” Hera Arevian of Arevco Lighting has seen such a growth in the popularity of pendant lighting that she’s devoted more than a quarter
of the space in her Ottawa store to displaying them and says they make up about half of her sales. “They’re a big seller for both kitchens and bathrooms and dining rooms, staircases,” she says. Even tract builders are getting in on the act. “It does make a statement when you get the right lights,” says Greg Graham, president of Cardel Homes’ Ottawa operation. In open-concept layouts, they’re a great way of providing definition by creating a screen of sorts between otherwise connected spaces, says architect Toon Dreessen. “Even when not turned on, they hang in the space and help define one space from another.” They help set the tone, providing ambience and illumination and creating a mood in the room, Dreessen says. And they’re found so often over kitchen islands because of the greater role that islands are playing in our home life, says one Ottawa designer. “The kitchen has evolved into a highly functional space, and the island is usually the focal point of today’s modern kitchen,” Linda Nolan says.
Postmedia News
Cardel Homes Sedona II suggests an upscale elegance befitting the innovative layout, which includes a main-floor master suite and a two-storey, double-sided fireplace.

Bouclair Homes launch baby line lines represent traditional soft pinks and blues. But there’s also the more contemporary vibrant tangerine Kori collection that would suit both girls and boys. Sandra Bracken, Bouclair’s vice-president of marketing, says it was just a matter of time before the retailer introduced a baby line. “We were covering off every other room in the house — the only one missing was baby,” Bracken says. “Customers do not always want typical looks for their baby — they want something that is contem-

Minimalism, cool hues to dominate in 2014 Lauren La Rose The Canadian Press T O RO N T O — W h e t h e r you’re seeking to make a minor ripple or sizable splash in your home in 2014, prognosticators are hoping to help make the new year a stylish one with predictions of noteworthy new looks in decor. Suzanne Dimma, editorin-chief of House and Home magazine, Benjamin Moore colour expert Sharon Grech and Lisa Tant, vice-president and fashion editor at Holt Renfrew share their views on notable trends and suggestions on how to incorporate the changes within your interiors. 1. Cool hues. Colour trendsetter Pantone opted for vibrant pop with the selection of Radiant Orchid — a purple hue infused with hot pink — as its colour of the year for 2014. But the ultra-bold shade seems to be the exception rather than the rule with a sleek yet more subdued palette of colours emerging for home interiors. Paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore selected Breath of Fresh Air — a pale, sky blue hue — as its colour of the year. While there were several examples of deep blue, teal and purple featured in its 2014 Colour Trends Guide, the company’s standout hue for the new year was among a vast array of softer shades like Distant Gray, Peach Parfait and Lavender Mist. Grech said the intention was to create a collection of colours which weren’t specific to one particular style as has been customary in the past. “Even though it’s often the most economical part of your design project, it takes up a lot of space. And if you
Angus Fergusson/The Canadian Press
The Look of the Year spread in the January 2014 issue of House and Home magazine. Paints in cool hues will be more prevalent in interior design, get that too strong, that’s what you’ll notice,” she said in reference to paint colour choice. “Even if you spend a ton of money on your new sofa or your Carrara marble countertop, if you get the paint colour wrong, it throws everything off.” In the vein of paler hues, Dimma suggested opting for a soft grey which she described as “a new neutral.” “That’s a huge change from white, and that will imbue everything with so much warmth,” she said. In its presentation of home, food and lifestyles trends for 2014 — which were also featured in its January edition — House and Home magazine pointed
to painted-out trim as a top decorating trend. The publication suggested coating walls, baseboards, trim and crown moulding in the same shade, transfor ming the space by making “a room feel larger, giving it a sense of full saturation.” But paint colour change shouldn’t be limited to the walls. Grech suggested infusing colour in unexpected places such as the stairs or bathtub, or adding a few coats to refresh a pre-loved dresser. But before cracking open that paint can, ensure that your colour of choice will work well within your space, Grech noted. “Even if you see it in your neighbour’s
house, you probably have different lighting and your context is different.” 2. Pretty patterns. From walls to tables to floors, there is no shortage of spaces to adorn with colourful prints. House and Home spotlighted blue and white dish ware, painted tiles, whimsical wall murals and geometric wallpaper and fabrics among its decorating dos for 2014. For those seeking to make a splash with a fresh print, Dimma suggested seeking out a Persian or Turkish rug. “That’s an easy thing. Roll out a new rug and you’re going to get a whole new look.” 3. Classic and contemporary. While rugs and wall coverings are decid-
edly more bold, there is a more minimalist approach to other core pieces for the coming year. Dimma highlighted ’50s-inspired chairs, as well as more contemporary sculptural lighting fixtures, both of which conjure a modern vibe. She isn’t surprised to see the gravitation towards retro-inspired ’50s and ’60s furnishings. “When you think about it, we always find through cycles in design that we look back and then we make it new again, and it’s probably just at that point in the cycle,” said Dimma. She said many companies are re-releasing new versions of classic designs, and
believes there is also a yearning among many for simplicity within the current ultraconnected environment. 4. The artisanal touch. You don’t need large-scale pieces to lend an ample dose of personality to your space with carefully crafted pieces such as a knitted wall hanging or tabletop pottery. “Introduce a new lamp and you can completely change the look of your room,” said Dimma. “If you can change up the look of some of your smaller pieces on your table, maybe just do a series of bowls in (a) glazed finish. That’s a really simple thing to do, and pair it with your white dishes, for instance.
