s that age-old saying goes: “the perfect time to start something is NOW” a notion I wholeheartedly believe in, especially when it comes to something as life changing as Active Living. Too often I hear strong, beautiful and capable women pushing their best active intentions to the wayside with excuses like “I’ll start eating healthy on Monday” or “I promise to exercise everyday next week”. But why wait? You don’t need a new week, month, season or even year to map out and chase down your best active ambitions and aspirations… You can start right NOW! I’m a big believer in setting goals. And for as long as I can remember I’ve started every morning by setting myself a list of daily intentions so that I bound out of bed enthusiastic and focused for the day ahead! I call them my MOVE, NOURISH, BELIEVE intentions and they don’t always have to be the big, life-changing, reach for the stars type of decisions. It can be something as simple as deciding to run one kilometre further than I did yesterday; drinking an extra litre of water that day or taking 30 minutes before bed to spend practicing some mindful meditation. I find it’s the achievement of these daily goals

I swear this place has the best Cardio Barre classes in the city! I’m so addicted and try to fit in as many as I can when I’m in town. I love that it’s a total body blitz and I’ve noticed that it’s really improved my posture.

Bodyweight training may seem like a new fad, but it’s actually been around for thousands of years. Back then, training wasn’t about lifting heavy objects or looking a certain way, it was simply about learning to control your body and the way that it moves.

Fast forward to today and it’s no wonder this fun and varied form of exercise is having a major revival. This workout is designed to be done anywhere, anytime and with no special equipment. Aim to complete three circuits of the entire workout. To add a cardio element, include a hill sprint or a 400m run in between each circuit to break it up.

A) ABDOMINAL LEAN WITH A TWIST 1. Sit with legs slightly bent and arms

B) SQUATS WITH A HALF TWIST 1. Start with feet slightly wider than

straight out in front; lean back to a 45-degree angle. 2. Rotate to one side, moving the same arm back behind you to tap the ground. Keep your other arm straight out in front. 3. Complete 20 reps alternating sides (10 reps each side). That’s one set.

QUINOA CAKES WITH LABNE, SMOKED SALMON AND SHAVED ASPARAGUS 1 cup cooked quinoa (as per the packets instructions) 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 leek, halved lengthways, thinly sliced 200g goats cheese feta, crumbled 75g (1/2 cup) chickpea flour 1 lemon, rind finely grated 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon cumin spice Handful of chopped parsley 2 eggs, lightly whisked Coconut oil, to shallow-fry 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed 250g herb dukka labne 300g slices smoked salmon Sweet paprika, extra, to sprinkle 1.

Heat the coconut oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add leek and stir for 3 minutes or until soft. Transfer to a bow and add the quinoa, feta, chickpea flour, lemon rind, paprika, cumin, parsley and egg and mix until well combined. Season. Shape spoonful’s of mixture into patties. Add oil to hot pan and cook patties, in 4 batches, for 2 minutes each side or until golden. Transfer to a plate with paper towel. Cover with foil to keep warm. Meanwhile, peel asparagus lengthways into ribbons. Top the quinoa cakes with labne, smoked salmon and asparagus. Sprinkle with extra paprika.

Pre heat oven to 160 degrees. Line rectangular baking tin with baking paper. Melt the coconut oil on low heat in a medium size pot, just until melted (don’t let it get too hot or boil). Remove from heat. Add the honey so that it will soften as well. Save on dishes and in the same pot add sifted cacao powder, almond meal, vanilla bean paste, salt and stir. Add the whisked eggs, baking soda, bi-carb and pistachios and give one last stir before pouring into lined baking tin. Bake for 20 minutes for fudgier brownies or until the centre is set and doesn’t really jiggle. For a more cake-like result bake for 30 minutes. Be sure not to overcook. Cool before removing it from the pan. Chill in the fridge before topping with cashew cream.

VANILLA CASHEW CREAM 1 cup organic raw cashews soaked for 2 hours in water 1/4-1/2 cup filtered water (depending on desired thickness) 1-2 tablespoon maple syrup, or more to taste 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste, or a little more to taste a pinch of sea salt 1. 2.

Throw everything into the blender and puree until thick and creamy. It is a good idea to start with 1/4 cup of water, and then gradually thin it out in order to achieve the desired thickness.

LAYERING THE BROWNIE 1. Place brownie into a glass, wide rimmed cup. 2. Top with a good dollop of cashew cream. 3. Sprinkle with fresh raspberries, dried rose and chopped pistachios. 4. Enjoy!

s modern women, our lives are busier than a blender at breakfast time. Between our Pilates classes, green juice catch-ups and slew of never-ending obligations, at some stage or another we get so caught up in the daily grind that we unconsciously manage to stumble and fall into a bit of a life rut, one that we just can’t seem to navigate our way out of. You know the ones I’m talking about… On first inspection, nothing seems to be out of line. Your career is flying, your social life is thriving and don’t even get me started on your health which is positively glowing! So why does life feel a little lacklustre? Trust me, we’ve all been there and we know just the right person to help pull you out! Listen up Sporty Sisters because it might be time to call in the experts. “Money is an emotional thing,” says renowned life coach and psychologist Miriam Henke. “Our role models and how we were raised make an impact on how we relate to money and our spending habits. Life coaching works to understand the hidden agenda beneath the surface and looks at ways to overcome it.”

“Create some thinking space to collect your ideas about what you really want to do and be,” says Thomson. “Often we know exactly what we don’t want, but it’s important to orient your brain towards what you really want.” Whether it’s writing, teaching, designing or coaching, the first step is to find the job that makes you look forward to Monday more than Friday. “Then write down how you could follow your passion: whether it’s retraining, work experience, or setting aside time to enjoy your passion,” Thomson says. “When you see your goals in black and white it gives you more certainty about what’s right for you.”

For example, if you spend copious amounts of money on new clothes in a bid to make yourself feel more attractive, a life coach will get to the root of the issue and find other ways for you to gain confidence in your appearance. “By putting a value on emotions, you’re not being financially responsible, but we look at other ways you can get that need fulfilled.”

When I was in my twenties (and let’s be honest, early thirties) I probably filled upwards of fifteen journals with big picture ideas and grand plans that I was sure would change my life for the better. I’d sit on the balcony of the ity bity apartment I shared with two friends, and work through a few glasses of organic pinot while scrawling list after list of things I wanted to do and places I wanted to go. My problem wasn’t that I didn’t have any ideas; in fact it was quite the opposite. Journals filled up, birthdays would come and go but none of these grand plans would ever come to fruition. I realized that initially, I struggled to determine what I really wanted out of life and I then I struggled some more trying to actually make it happen.

But when I turned 33 something finally clicked inside me and at long last, I had that allusive light bulb moment. At 33, there are no ifs or buts about it… you are really, truly, an adult. I could no longer attribute my lack of follow through to my mixed up twenties. All around me, friends were getting promoted at jobs they absolutely loved, marrying the loves of their lives and making it happen for themselves. It was high time I stopped fantasizing about the life I wanted and actually take the steps to attain it. But how does one go from a dreamer to a doer? I read every selfhelp book under the sun. I cleared my mind and heart to make room for my deepest desires. And most importantly I spent four years working harder than I ever had before to earn my PhD in Psychology. I did it. These days I wake up happy. I know what I want, and even better, I know how to get it. I finally know how to go from idea to done - in every area of my life.

E

very now and then you stumble across a sister who is so unashamedly authentic; you can’t help but become completely enamored by their scrupulous sincerity. Tess Wilcox is one of them. The wanderlusting, jet-setting, ‘spirit of the world’ is the brains and beauty behind Soul Decks, a collection of 1970’s inspired cruiser skateboards made by hand with a whole lotta love. Her lust for life is as infectious as it is inspiring and she’s proof that dreams really do come true if you have the courage to pursue them!

The bohemian beauty is free spirited in every sense of the word, and when asked of her current location, her answer is case in point. “Gypsy,” she proudly proclaims. “I just left Currumbin and I’m making the move to set up shop in London and Barcelona.” This fervent sense of Wanderlust was one she acquired early on, as a hungry young PR and Journalism grad who landed a killer job Marketing Luxury Resorts. “I studied at uni and then this dream job fell into my lap, so I worked my butt off to make sure I did the best job I could possibly do. I travelled the world and stayed in insanely beautiful places.” But despite the love she had for her job, this soulful sister had an artistic void she so

desperately yearned to fill, and that she did with the founding of Soul Decks. It was exactly the creative outlet she needed. One that she could completely immerse herself in, one that made her smile and above all else, one that unearthed itself honestly and organically. “Let’s call it serendipity,” she muses of its roots. “The concept for Soul Decks came about one afternoon when I was visiting my best friend in Noosa. We were sitting around their Mango tree making skateboards and spraying surfboards in the backyard. We had the best weekend ever, and it was in the midst of what had been quite a turbulent time for both of us, so I wanted to capture it,” she continues, her passion becoming clearer with every word. “Essentially the driving force behind the idea was to pour my heart out into something that inspired women. Something that reminded them of their beauty, of their uniqueness and of their ability to ‘get the heck up and live that life’. Something that spoke to their

soul. It just so happened that I was sitting there with blank decks all around me, and having been a pavement slider since before I can remember, the idea for Soul Decks was born.” And it quickly took off ! Selling the boards on Ámes Collective (Ahmez), a bohemian inspired online retail space Tess founded, she managed to turn her creative outlet into a profitable business

and prove there really is power in a name. “Contrary to what people think, the brand is not named after me,” she laughs. “Aimee is my middle name but Ámes is French for soul and I knew that would always be my driving force behind the business. I needed a constant reminder of why I was doing this, because the moment there stops being a reason behind what I’m doing, I will stop.” Then suddenly, out of nothing more than a wholesome need to simplify, she traded in her 10-year corporate gig to run her business full time in March this year and never looked back. “Dreams grow, priorities change, and what makes you happy is bound to alter your path in life,” she explains of her decision. Turning a passion into a profit is a dream for most, but is not something that comes to fruition without a great deal of honesty and integrity, both assets Tess is well equipped with. “I love to skate; I love aesthetics; I love to make people happy; I love people who go against the grain and just make things work,” She begins. “When I made my first Soul Deck, it was for me, and out of love. I didn’t anticipate it would take off like it did, but that’s the beauty of doing what you

love. It grows organically without you ever intending to head down that path,” she cites, her attitude as humble as it is endearing. Now, in a state of complete contentment, Tess is living her dream. “I get to shape, paint and write all day. I can surf and skate when I want and I have the ability to set up my studio anywhere in the world. I am wholeheartedly living the exact life I want to be,” she professes. But that doesn’t mean she’s become complacent, and like all successful business owners, she continually strives for more. “I find goals dangerous. I set intentions

instead,” she clarifies. “I find setting intentions has more meaning and less pressure. It’s driven more by happiness and intent than it is by stress to get somewhere. I’m sure a lot of business owners would disagree with me, but it’s just how I operate best. Setting intentions and then happily working away in thebackground – my intentions always materialize. Always.” The self-professed spirit of the world has a certain air about her, one that’s alluring, beguiling and unbelievably enchanting. “I live for serendipitous moments and those moments of inner alchemy,” she divulges of what keeps her soul alive. “And laughing. I just don’t stop laughing, ever.” Despite having hit countless professional home runs, it’s the personal achievements she deems worthy of

celebration. “I measure achievement different to most. I have hit countless milestones for my business that I am ridiculously grateful for, but to me, the real achievement is in attaining an appreciation and love of who I am as a person. In maintaining that consistent soulful influence behind the decisions I make in business, and in life.” While we all have dreams, the fundamental difference between being a dreamer and a dream catcher is the courage and conviction to chase after them, both traits possessed by Tess Wilcox who closes our interview by ascertaining her definition of what it means to be a dream catcher. “Unreservedly and wholeheartedly doing what you love. We can all find a million excuses not to follow our dreams, but why would you want to? You only get one shot at this little thing we call life, you may as well aim for the top!”

MOUNT COOK, NEW ZEALAND Newbies, take note: before he set off to climb Mount Everest last century, Sir Edmund Hillary liked to practice on Mount Cook. Even without the actual mountain climbing that takes you to the summit, you’re looking at a multi-day hike that requires above average fitness. No sweat? You’ll be rewarded with spectacular views and a truly memorable sporty adventure. Numerous hikes are available, including two and three-day guided tours with Alpine Recreation (www.alpinerecreation.com) that involve an overnight stay at Carolinex Hut.

PREP: You’ll need experience with multi-day hikes and 4+ hours of hiking per day. PACK: Check with your guide for a detailed equipment list and pack layers that can be easily added and removed, depending on weather conditions. Caroline Hut is fully equipped with non-perishables, so if you’re staying there you’ll only need to pack fresh food.

MACHU PICCHU, PERU The trip of a lifetime! Hiking the famed Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Micchu is a four-day mountain adventure complete with guides and porters. You’ll need average fitness to take on the 42km trail, and will be hiking for up to eight hours a day at heights of more than 4000 metres. Prepare for the high altitudes by spending a couple of days in the closest city, Cusco. You can also get a feel for the spectacular Inca culture here by visiting the ruins of the Qurikancha (the Temple of the Sun) and other Inca sites. They’re all good prep for the mind-blowing experience of Machu Picchu.

PREP: Be organised! Access to the Inca Trail is restricted to just 500 visitors per day and permits for the summer season sell out months in advance. Visit your doctor for any necessary vaccinations. PACK: Check with your travel agent or trekking company about what gear is provided and what you’ll need to bring yourself. Temperatures can change dramatically on the mountain trails, so pack layers including winter hats and gloves.

At 2,228 metres above sea level, Mount Kosciuszko may be pretty low by world standards, but it makes for an awesome day hike. Take the Thredbo chair lift part-way up the mountain then hike the 6.5km trail to reach the peak. Schedule your trip for spring when the wildflowers are blooming and the air is crisp and clear. Visitors to the summit regularly report experiencing some seriously happy vibes!

t wasn’t singer Wes Carr’s beautiful voice that first attracted his wife Charlotte, but rather his ability to tell a white lie. “We met at a barbecue. I had mentioned that I enjoyed working out so he told me he was a personal trainer and would love to train me,” Charlotte recalls. “We met at the gym the next morning at 7am and we trained for about a month together before I cottoned on to the fact he was quite the storyteller!”

Skip to today and the couple – who married in 2012 – now share a beautiful, light-filled home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and a very energetic toddler, Willow, aged 2. “It’s a very active life with a two-year-old!” Charlotte admits. “We love to head down to the beach as a family – phones off, shoes off. We live near Centennial Park so walking there to feed the ducks is a massive win-win. I also love kicking the football with Wes.” A true Sporty Sister, Charlotte says that being on the move is vital to her wellbeing. “Taking Willow to Gymbaroo once a week means I have to pack the stroller and head to Bondi beach. I love going down an hour before we start and we walk the boardwalk or run down to the sand and get our feet wet. Getting out of the house several times a day has been my saviour. The fresh air, movement and freedom are so important.” An actress and voiceover artist, Charlotte may have had regular roles in Home and

Away, Packed to the Rafters and various other TV series, but she’s one of the most down-to-earth women you could ever hope to meet, and her family philosophy is case in point. “Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s just mess; it can be sorted out later! Focus on a positive, loving environment where you can each be the best version of yourself.”
