The next four days are sent in the lake district encompassing the summits of Hartside, Shap, Kirkstone, Wynrose, Hardknott, Whinlatter and Honister passing through the towns of Alston, Middleton and Teasdale Kirkby Steven, Kendal Coniston, Ambleside, Ullswater, Keswick and Cockermouth to a finish just South of Carlisle. There will be opportunities to visit Lowther castle, The Lakeland motor museum, Ravensglass and Eskdale railway and Honister. Forth Bridges 1. The railway bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site opened in 1890 of cantilever design and 2467M in length it carries around 200 + trains per day The first road bridge is of a suspension design opened in 1964 and is 2512M long closed to normal traffic due to corrosion in the multi-stranded suspension cables. Before closing 23 million vehicles per year were using the bridge. The second bridge is the recently opened Queensferry crossing. It is a cable stayed structure 2700 M long opened in Autumn 2017. The towers for the cable stays are 160M high, making it the UK’s tallest bridge. 2. Tay Bridge The railway bridge is notorious as the first construction collapsed in December 1879. The second bridge more robust in design is 3264m long and was completed in 1887. The road bridge is 2250m long and was opened in 1966 and of some 42 spans significantly designed Fairhurst and constructed by Duncan Logan of Muir of Ord. 3. Brechin is the former Royal Burgh of Angus it has a Cathedral and is the former pre-reformation seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese. 4. Edzel is significant as a Georgian pre-planned town with broad streets and a grid layout. 5. Cairn-O-mount road some 1493 feet above sea level. Regularly one of the first routes to be closed by snow in the Winter. 6. Banchory and Royal Deeside is the start of the Victorian heritage trail with a Plethora of interesting places to visit. The most famous being the holiday destination of the Royal family at Balmoral. 7. Cockbridge to Tomintoul the A939 a famous 9 mile stretch of road rising to 2090 feet at the Lecht Ski centre. This road regularly closed in Winter. 8. Loch Laggan and the British Aluminium Company construction. To supply the aluminium smelter in Forth William which consists of this dam together with Loch Treig which supply the smelter with hydro power. Designed by Meik and Halcrow and constructed by Balfour Beatty during the 1920’s. A narrow gauge railway of some 15 miles in length from Fort William was constructed to enable the works from 1925. 9. Spean bridge is the home of the commando memorial over looking the commando training area established in 1942.

10. Ardnamurchan the most westerly point on the mainland of the UK. 11. Sands if Morar. The silver sands are a series of beautiful beaches which stretch from Arisaig to Morar. There are views out to the isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna. 12. Mallaig linked to Fort William by the “ Road to the Isles” and the terminus of The Western Highland Railway. It is a port with ferries to Skye. 13. West Highland Railway line extension to Mallaig some 41 miles of scenic route opened on 1900. Built by Glasgow contractor Robert ‘concrete Bob’ McAlpine with 11 tunnels and 8 major bridges including the iconic 21 arch Glenfinnan viaduct. 14. Glenfinnan. In 1745 the Jacobite rising began here when Price Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard on the shores of Loch Shiel. 15. Caledonian canal. Principal engineer Thomas Telford founder of the Institution of civil engineers. Completed in 1822 Neptunes staircase is a series of 8 locks at the Southern end up the canal. Some 60 miles in length and until the railways it transformed transport in Scotland from the Lowlands North. 16. Glen Coe In 1698 in the aftermath of the Jacobite uprising od 1689 the Massacre of Glen Coe took place. 38 men from Clan McDonald were killed by government forces. The area is noted for its two waterfalls, trials and climbs of peaks such as Buachaille Etive Mor. 17. Rannoch Moor- An expanse of 50 square miles of Boggy Moorland. A site of special scientific interest traversed only by the A82 and the West Highland Railway. Corrour is the UKs highest station on the Moor. 18. Glen Ogle- 7 miles from Lix Toll (Turnoff to Killin) to Lochearnhead. You will see the remains on the right hand side of the Caledonian railway to Oban which was closed in the 60’s Due to a landslip. Also visible are the remains of the military road built by general Cauldfield to make the highlands easier to access after the Jacobite uprising of 1745 Tear off .........
