Hibiscus Coast RSA faces uphill financial battle As Anzac Day approaches, the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA is fighting for its financial survival. This is not the first time the local RSA has struggled to balance its books (HM March 18, 2015) – something its president says is largely due to falling attendance by its 3500 members at its restaurant and bar. Developers have been eyeing up the RSA’s site in residential Whangaparaoa for a long time and sale of part of that land could provide a reprieve. Last weekend, members gathered for an extraordinary general meeting

to decide whether to accept any of the options put before them. Three separate development proposals have been made for part of the 2.8ha site on Vipond Road. The front-runner is Coastal Properties, owned by Brendan Couglan, which wants to build a 120-apartment retirement village. Another option, suggested by members, is that the RSA sells the land it owns on the hill, up from Melia Place. Acceptance of any one by a twothirds majority at the meeting will put the RSA back in the black, temporarily at least, whereas if all are turned down, it will be forced to close its doors and

dispose of assets to pay creditors. Whichever way that vote goes (the decision was made after this paper went to print and is linked to this story at localmatters.co.nz) the longterm future of the RSA hinges on its ability to turn a profit. President Frank Coggan says there is no doubt that improving income is the biggest challenge. “There is a lot here, including affordable meals, drinks, darts, bowls and snooker. But there’s big competition. We need to adapt to a changing market and find a secret remedy but we’ve yet to do so,” he says. “Selling part of our land would only be

a temporary fix. It would take around 10 percent of members to use the club once or twice a month to turn our fortunes around.” He says if the RSA has to close, its welfare and other services would need to continue in some way. Mr Coggan says that the RSA needs to bring in $150,000 a month just to break even. The power bill is around $4000 a month and capitation to the national body costs $35,000 annually. He says things have been touch and go for a while, but a sudden plunge in continued page 2

takings over summer was the last straw. Income fell by $40,000 last November, and by $20,000 in December through to February. Mr Coggan says that changes made in the restaurant should improve the March figures. Paying wages is the top priority and staff have been excellent, getting their shoulders behind the organisation. “We’ve been up front with them and they all want to see the place survive,” he says. “Janet, who has been behind the bar for 25 years, broke down when I told her about our situation.” The process has caused uncertainty and turmoil. There have been a number of resignations from the executive committee in recent weeks. A group of 70 members also made a failed attempt at a vote of ‘no confidence’ in the committee. Long time members Les Watkins and Peter Cowlishaw say that hearing the RSA was in trouble, via a letter last month, was “a terrible shock”. Both had to reduce their attendance at the club once they could no longer drive but they say the veterans value its

services, which include coordinating volunteers who drive members to and from medical appointments, hospital and home visits, advice and advocacy. “There’s no way we want to see the boys thrown out of a club that’s so essential to them,” Mr Cowlishaw says. “However, if that does happen, I hope they relocate somewhere flat on a bus stop so I can go more often.” Welfare officer for the 600-strong Women’s Section, Win Harvey, says the women would miss the social gettogethers that the RSA provides and support advisor Chandra Newman, who visits members at home and keeps their stories and photos in a special book, agrees. “There is a lot of laughter in here and for many people who live alone, we provide a caring face. There are so many RSAs closing – we want to be the one that doesn’t close.” Anzac Day services will be held as usual on April 25 (see details p22) Comment on this story at www. localmatters.co.nz or write to Feedback – email and postal addresses on p2.

City lights create demand for weekend ferry

More than 1100 responses have been received, 10 days into a survey seeking interest in weekend ferry sailings between Gulf Harbour and Auckland. The vast majority (85.8 percent) of those who responded to the online survey want to use the ferry to head to the city’s restaurants and bars in the weekend and 87.4 percent say they would use the ferry to avoid traffic (72.6 percent would opt for a ferry to avoid drink-driving). Most (more than 60 percent) will also use other public transport on their journey. More than 70 percent say they would use a weekend ferry to go shopping in the city. A total of 38.1 percent of respondents are occasional ferry users and 12.8 percent do not currently use the ferry at all, indicating that weekend ferries would attract new custom. Just over 21 percent of respondents are commuters and only 1.7 percent are students. The majority (47.6 percent) live in Gulf Harbour, with the numbers dropping sharply as you travel up the peninsula – 11 percent come from Manly and 9.8 percent from Stanmore Bay. The survey was initiated on March 27 following an Off the Record in Hibiscus Matters’ March 1 paper about the demand for weekend ferries; this caused a stir on social media. As a result, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board requested the developers of Fairway Bay, Top Harbour, to conduct a survey, focused on weekend sailings. Local board chair Julia Parfitt will present the findings at an upcoming meeting with Auckland Transport (AT), as evidence of the potential demand. “AT needs to see some evidence of demand before they can build a business case around weekend sailings,” Mrs Parfitt says. Until last year, Top Harbour subsidised the weekday ferry sailings and development consultant Michael Webb-Speight says the company is open to talking with AT about supporting weekend sailings in future. However he says it is impossible to make a commitment until the company has those discussions and knows what any such financial contribution may look like. The survey closes this week, on Wednesday, April 12.

Well done Councillor John Watson and his Viewpoint piece on Rodney District Council and Auckland Transport bribery and corruption issues (HM March 15). Did they just ignore it or did they just accept it as normal? I question the actions of the Serious Fraud Office in deciding not to follow up on the numerous others they were in fact aware of. Save the trees Felling those trees at Whangaparaoa School (HM March 15) is completely unnecessary and a waste of the school’s time and money. Surely its resources, which seem to be stretched these days for all schools, would be better spent on something educational? Tough times for RSA Recently my partner Andrew helped my family uncover quite a bit of information about my father’s time in the Army in World War II, including insights from a diary kept while he was a prisoner of war after being captured on Crete. It has been eye opening. Growing up, I remember Dad was a regular at his RSA in Palmerston North. My family heard little of his war experiences, and that seems to be common among men of his generation who leaned heavily on the RSA and former comrades for what we’d now call their mental health. Men that the family had never met before turned up at my father’s funeral to pay their respects and lay poppies on the casket. It was like a second family, but one that he had kept entirely separate from us. The RSA that he belonged to was one of the first established in NZ, formed in 1916. It went into receivership in 2012 and was re-launched in a new form in 2015, sharing clubrooms in a hotel. Its welfare service continues, through formation of a Trust, and there are regular club nights. This is becoming an all too familiar scenario – increasingly, RSAs find themselves struggling to turn a profit as the servicemen and women who the organisation was formed to support grow older, their reduced mobility making it difficult to regularly eat and drink there. Other factors are at play too, and they are discussed in our front page story on our own RSA’s battle to stay financially afloat. RSA staff spoken to by Hibiscus Matters are a very caring bunch of people who make veterans’ wellbeing their top priority. This gives me confidence that whatever happens to the site in Vipond Road that we now know as Hibiscus Coast Community RSA, the support and commemorative services that it provides, along with the special role it has within the community, will find a way to go forward.

Ban bags The use of one-trip plastic bags should not only be reduced, it should be banned. As your story in the April 1 paper points out, they are a global disaster. As a boatie I am well aware that so many of these bags end up in our oceans. Nick Smith says the bags are 1.5 percent of New Zealand’s litter, but the harm they do is out of all proportion to that. It’s also a problem that can be easily solved by simply making the bags too costly for people to use. Cathy Lucas, Whangaparaoa

Got the message Council finally talking sense, with the reduction in chemical spraying (HM April 1). I hope Auckland Transport gets the message and stops using Roundup. There may be scientific studies on both sides of this argument but I’ve always been of the mind that you err on the side of caution. If there is no need to risk poisoning people, particularly those sensitive to these substances, why would you? Listening to the people at last. Francis Aitken, Matakatia

Motorists are being asked to slow down and take extra care when traveling between Puhoi and Warkworth as work ramps up on the 18.5km extension of the Northern Motorway. More trucks and construction vehicles are using State Highway 1 as the Northern Express Group progresses work on the motorway extension. Logging operations are hitting high gear, site offices are being established and earthworks continue, meaning that more trucks and 4WD vehicles will be entering and leaving the construction site. Northern Express group chief executive Ray Wilson asks motorists to reduce their speed and take care, particularly when approaching areas where traffic enters and exits the work site. “We are working with Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency, to ensure appropriate traffic control measures are in place to protect the public and the construction team. We ask motorists to take note of the traffic controls in place, drive to the conditions, and take extra care when using the Moir Hill Road/SH1 intersection,” Mr Wilson says. The Puhoi to Warkworth project is the first stage of the Puhoi to Wellsford Road of National Significance that will extend the Northern Motorway to four lanes north from the Johnstone’s Hill Tunnels to a tie-in with the existing SH1 north of Warkworth. It will be open by late 2021.

How Council should spend our rates money was a burning question at the two public engagements I recently attended. The council was seeking direction on what the rates increase this year should be. Of course few of us like paying more rates but when faced with the three suggested increases that council are looking at – 2 percent, 2.5 percent or 3.5 percent – I was surprised at the way residents responded: more about that later. When told that the 2 percent increase would mean cuts to existing services people were asked which services should be cut and which should be retained or increased. The residents’ priorities were very clear – people value their locally delivered services; their parks, libraries, environmental programmes and local events and want more investment in transport while major events, economic development and governance and administration are of low or no importance to them. I hope the council listens to that message when it sets the rates in June, and gives priority to the activities that ratepayers want. Last year Council reduced the budget but did not specify in what areas cuts should occur. Instead, staff were asked to identify where savings and efficiencies could be made. The areas they targeted were libraries, parks, school environmental programmes and local service levels. These are the very areas that people value and are therefore extremely upset to see changed or reduced. Back to the preferred rate increase: most of the people at the engagements I attended supported a 2.5 percent ratewww.coastplaza.co.nz increase but wanted priority to be given to the areas where they felt their money should be spent. 09 424 4100 How do you think council should spend your money? Although the formal 6 our Main Street, Whangaparaoa submission period has closed I am sure councillors, John Watson and Wayne Walker, would appreciate your feedback. Transport initiatives Recognising the huge pressure on parking during the construction phase at the Silverdale Park and Ride station the local board approached Auckland Transport and granted it temporary use, during the build, of the 100 carparks next to the closed former Silverdale Bowling Club site. Also we are keen to see weekend ferry sailings and are working alongside Top Harbour to promote a ferry survey to gauge demand. We have a meeting planned with Auckland Transport to discuss how this can be achieved. Finally we are co-hosting another breakfast briefing with Michael Barnett and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Michael will be giving us an update on where Penlink as a project is going and report back on the Chamber’s discussions with central Government, the Mayor and private investors. Since we joined with the Chamber to promote Penlink we have noticed some real traction on this key project for our area. The breakfast is on April 28 at 7.30am at the Silverdale Rugby Club. Attendance is free but as there is a light breakfast you will need to register beforehand at www.penlink.co.nz. We look forward to seeing you there.

TankVac

Like many good Kiwi No 8 wire stories, Warren Agnew came up with his latest invention while trying to solve a problem. One morning his late wife Lois asked why the water tank overflow didn’t come from the base, where the old water and leaf material sit, instead of the freshwater from the top. Within an hour, Warren had a simple system working with a 40 gallon drum. He quickly patented the idea and started a 12 year journey to perfect the system. It included becoming a director of research for the Todd Corporation. This gave him access to Waikato University engineering to help create the design and Auckland University of Technology microbiologist to test the water quality. The end result is the TankVac, which works by sucking up the materials that accumulate at the bottom of the tank and siphoning them out through a water overflow without the need for power. Warren says this makes the water safer to drink, reduces filter servicing and professional tank cleaning. It’s one of many inventions and about 10 patents held by Warren, including Gotcha Traps and Black Trakka pest control systems. The Scotts Landing resident says he has come up with many ideas sitting

It’s impressive for someone who only started inventing later in life after a full career as a teacher at primary schools including Warkworth, Matakana and Kaipara Flats. He doesn’t call himself a scientist, although he studied chemistry and physics at university. “I tend to just look at problems and try and solve them.” He credits his creativity to his love of orchestral music. He also has an interest in water quality, including being a founding member of Friends of the Mahurangi River.

James Tayler

At local Anzac Day parades, an impressive array of medals adorns the chest of Arkles Bay resident James Tayler. Alongside his own six medals, he wears six earned by his great grandfather who served in the South African War and World War I. James’ young son Daniel generally wears another 12 medals to the parades. These belonged to James’ two grandfathers – both were Majors in the British Army during World War II. Although James, aged 54, has seen active service in the Navy, his greatest pleasure is flying rescue missions for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust and his focus is on staying in the air as long as he is able. He spoke with Terry Moore.

M

y father is an Anglican priest in Southern Spain at a church in the mountains near Malaga. He was a primary school teacher before becoming a priest. His father and grandfather were both in the Army, so he definitely bucked the trend. I joined the military straight out of high school because there wasn’t much else to do. I had virtually no academic qualifications but was keen on engineering. I tried to join the merchant Navy as an engineer but didn’t get in because at 16 years old I was too small. In a couple of months, although I was underweight, I was just tall enough for the Royal Navy to accept me. I spent eight years as noncommissioned engineer working on nuclear submarines during the Cold War. While I was doing that I got the qualifications I needed to transfer to Naval officer training as a pilot. I was flying gliders as a hobby and the first time I went up in the air was an ‘epiphany moment’: I knew that flying was what I was there to do. I saw the very end of the Falklands War and then active service in Bosnia and both Gulf Wars. I also did peacekeeping work with the United Nations in Sierra Leone. My eldest son, Peter is in the British Army.

M

ost of my active flying has been in support roles, transporting stores and troops on and off ships and into areas of conflict. Most of it is fairly routine and you’re well protected because the military don’t want to lose expensive people and assets – it’s not like the fighting you see in the movies. The flying conditions cause the biggest risk – things like sandstorms and poor visibility. The helicopters are very well protected with fighter jets covering you to make sure you get in and out safely. You don’t go in until they’re pretty sure it’s safe. It was interesting and exciting work – I love the kind of job where you never know what’s going to happen from one day to the next. I couldn’t handle a desk job. I came to NZ because my sister has lived here more than 20 years. I’d got to the point in my career where I was running out of flying jobs and looking at being posted into administrative

tasks: the Navy likes to promote people so that they progress over time into doing desk work as well as the fun jobs. I could see the writing was on the wall, so approached the NZ Navy to see if they wanted a flight instructor which they luckily did. After eight years with the NZ Navy as a helicopter pilot I ended up as commanding officer of No 6 squadron, the Naval helicopter squadron – at which time I could see the desk jobs looming once again. I had spent a while on a search and rescue squad in the British Navy, which gave me my first taste of rescue work. I enjoyed it because while 99 percent of military flying is training and exercising, the rescue flying is doing something for real.

S

o I joined NEST, and then 18 months ago became a full time pilot with the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust (most people know us as Westpac Rescue Helicopter). It was a way to stay flying and I can’t believe I get paid to do something that I love so much. My wife would say it’s an obsession. Even after all this time in aviation, every time I hear a plane overhead I look up to see what it is.

T

here are only two helicopters in our rescue service and they’re available 24/7 so it’s very busy. Every time you go flying you are making a difference. I enjoy a challenge, such as when the weather is bad or someone is in a difficult position that only a helicopter can get them out of. One that I remember was when someone had fallen by a waterfall near Waihi and we had to use an 80m winch to get to them. You are focusing hard, hovering next to a rock face in windy conditions and if you thought about it, you probably wouldn’t do it. It’s a real team job because the pilot flies the helicopter, the paramedic is on the winch wire and the crewman leans out the door and directs the pilot. It’s only afterwards that you think about how close a call it was. You must have complete trust in your team. As an engineer I appreciate that there are an awful lot of moving parts that have to all be going in the right direction and

working well for a helicopter to fly! The military background helps too because you have to fly fairly close to the limit of what the machines can do. You have to be mentally resilient because you see some distressing things at times and the ones that still affect me are any rescues involving children. You have to be careful, at times like that, that you don’t push on too hard when the conditions are difficult because you can’t risk the helicopter or your crew – so if someone needs you, particularly a child, you have to still make sensible decisions. I’ve never had a crash, but there have been a couple of close calls such as having to land in a hurry when systems have failed. Many years ago in the UK I flew into electric power lines that weren’t marked on a chart. The impact broke the wires and put out power to a nearby village. We ended up landing close to where we hit the wires with only minor damage to the helicopter.

I

’ve heard the view expressed that some people should pay to be rescued, if they’ve got themselves into dangerous situations. I don’t believe that’s a good idea, as it may discourage people from calling for help. However the current system of having all the rescue helicopters in NZ administrated by separate charitable trusts is very inefficient because we’re competing for funds. Some sort of central funding would be more efficient but the downside is that you’d lose that community sense of ownership. Currently there are 11 separate rescue trusts all with their own administrations and training and different types of helicopter. Ours is quite well funded with a range of corporate sponsors along with Westpac and this means we can fly 24/7 whereas others can’t respond as quickly or in night-time or difficult conditions.

They’re all incredibly professional but just don’t have the resources. It costs around $6000 per mission and last year we flew 1100 missions. Maintenance is the biggest cost, there’s wages and insurance and we chew through fuel at 240 litres per hour.

A

nzac Day is hugely popular with current servicemen and women because it’s a chance to talk to the veterans – there’s a lot to share because the military hasn’t changed that much, although a lot of effort is put into equality of gender, race and culture. I’m a member of the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA – most military people, even after they’ve left the service, still have strong ties with the military and belonging to the RSA is a way to keep those going.

I

’ve just come back from a week in Indonesia running an aviation safety course for pilots who work for a tobacco company, flying its executives around. There’s a lot of money in cigarettes. One machine in a factory produces a million cigarettes a minute and that’s just one of many machines. I talked with the Indonesian pilots about why people make mistakes and crew resource management – the nontechnical skills you need to stay safe. Mistakes happen because we’re human beings and not evolved to work in a complex environment. Our basic programming is still all about flight or fight. So when you read of a pilot making a stupid mistake it could be that something has triggered that fight/flight response. Training is all about learning to stay cool and calm – and also about communication. Most of the time I can keep a cool head because, after almost 30 years of flying, you get quite good at focusing and analysing what’s going on in an emergency.

Infrastructure needed before development Easter trading put The opportunity to have a say on changes to the sequencing of land for development in currently rural areas around the Hibiscus Coast has been extended. Originally due to end on April 18, public engagement on the Future Urban Land Supply Strategy Refresh has been extended to April 24. Cr John Watson says the changes come at a time when public concern continues to grow over the lack of adequate infrastructure to cope with unprecedented levels of growth across Auckland. “People are questioning whether this level of housing development can proceed without additional investment in roading and wastewater,” Cr Watson says. “There are an additional 40,000 people arriving in Auckland each year. The price residents are paying are increasing levels of congestion, burgeoning debt and stretched services across Auckland.” On the Hibiscus Coast there are already a number of consented developments in Orewa, Whangaparaoa and Millwater. submitted an application for a share of scale housing without the requisite The refreshed version of the Future the government’s bulk infrastructure infrastructure – for us that means Urban Land Supply Strategy includes fund. Auckland Council will seek public input before it makes a decision as to whether all local shops can open for business on Easter Sunday. Currently there are tight restrictions as to which shops can legally trade on Easter Sunday but there has been pressure to end those restrictions. Government delegated the decision to councils when it passed the Shop Trading Act last August. At a meeting last month, Auckland Council made a unanimous decision to put the question before ratepayers. The council wants to make sure it strikes the right balance between opportunities for additional money to businesses and workers, and opportunities for people to spend time on other recreational and leisure activities. Community engagement may begin next month with findings reported back to the governing body in August. If Council decides to pursue a policy, a proposed policy would be adopted by October for public notification and consultation would be carried out by December. A final decision should be made in time for Easter 2018.

Winning formula

It’s always a struggle for schools to convince parents to pay the annual donation. Silverdale School came up with a novel approach recently. An offer went out by email which said if parents paid in full by the end of the day, they would go in a draw to win back the donation. CL

Try your hand at painting on silk

The ancient art of painting on silk was something that Warkworth artist Kerry Cline turned to when she was suffering from depression. “After my husband died, I was depressed and grieving and antidepressants didn’t help,” Kerry says. “I had always loved Chinese silk scrolls, so I decided to try painting silk. I thought the challenge of a new medium might be what I needed and in fact, because silk painting requires great concentration, it proved to be a great anti-depressant.” Kerry, who also works in oil on canvas and acrylics, went on to create large silk works in America, where she lived for around 20 years. She recently returned to New Zealand and is offering a silk painting workshop as part of the school holiday programme at Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa.

Kerry Cline uses non-toxic dyes when painting on silk. The concentration required to paint silk like this is very therapeutic.

She will provide already stretched and framed rounds of silk for the students to work on – some blank for people who have used watercolours before, and some with an image she has outlined to be completed by the student.

The Silk Fabric Painting session, in the second week of the holidays on Friday, April 28, is open to all ages. More information, www.estuaryarts. org or drop into Estuary Arts Centre in Western Reserve, Orewa.

School holiday masterpieces to be made There is a wide range of options at Estuary Arts Centre’s school holiday programme that could make this your children’s most creative school holidays yet. The programme runs from April 17– 28 and includes making a tiny town out of clay and paint with local artist Sue Law. Sue is also taking a session for children aged eight years and over on

making an old-style treasure map game which includes a nature hunt to find items to use as felted ‘treasure keepers’. Another local artist, Jo Bain, will be making dream catchers with children aged 5–13 years. And there is a chance to make some mosaic pieces with Corrine Henderson, using items such as ceramic tiles, beads and buttons.

The Topp Twins’ red shed will stop in Matakana for a show this month.

Topp Twins get closer on tour The Topp Twins shared a womb so travelling in a small red shed on wheels for their national tour will be roomy, jokes Jools Topp. Jools and twin sister Lynda will stop at the Matakana Country Park woolshed on April 22 and 23 during their ‘Heading for the Hills’ tour. Their travelling accommodation, purpose-built by Ashburton locals, is nicknamed ‘stinky’ after wagons that road workers lived in and dried socks over potbelly stoves. The Topp’s version will have a small kitchen, room to sleep, hang costumes and house Jools’ dog White Feather. Jools says they enjoyed the last time they toured in close comfort for the Gypsy Caravan Tour in 1989. The Kiwi music and character comedy icons have been busy travelling NZ for the past three years for the TV1 show Topp Country. The culinary journey “poking our noses in other people’s backyards” features locals like the family behind Lothlorien feijoa winery at Ahuroa. “There are so many people doing weird and beautiful things, coming up with an idea and following it to fruition. The show ended up being about couples and what it means to have a great partnership,” Jools says. Her partnership with Lynda has grown even stronger after battling breast cancer. “We don’t sweat the small stuff anymore.” She says they love performing live. “It’s our greatest joy. With filming you can do it again, but performing you’ve

got one crack at it.” The latest show will be family-friendly with comedy, music, yodelling and iconic favourite characters including Ken and Ken, Camp Mother and Camp Leader and the bowling ladies. “It’ll be a bit of everything and a good time. If you don’t get that you’ve been short changed.” Jools told Mahurangi Matters they do their homework for each country town they visit by reading the local paper and incorporating topical issues in the show. They have a head start in Auckland’s north, where Lynda had a bach in Leigh and Jools has a horse ranch in South Head Kaipara. They both still have strong connections with rural life and it is the theme of their tour. “It’s where we come from, we will always honour that; we are farming stock. If you’ve ever been a farmer or lived off the land you know it never leaves you,” Jools says. They also enjoy the pace of country life, say there is time to slow down and turn off your devices, but at the same time “country folk know how to have fun”. The Topp Twins are originally from Huntly and have been performing for 35 years. They have received the New Zealand Order of Merit and Honorary Doctorates, and in 2010 were inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Info: topptwins.com or book online at Eventfinda.

Early appeal for late day out

Calling all local bands, dancers and musicians – Kowhai Festival is making an early call for entertainers who’d like to take the stage at the Huge Day Out, which takes place this year on October 28. Festival music director Phil Tyler says performers will even have extra time to practice their acts this year, since the Huge Day Out is being held later in the month than usual. “I want to find as much local talent as possible to play on our main stage and our small stage,” he says. “We always get people wanting to take part at the last minute, or who say they didn’t know about it, so we want to get the word out early to give people as much opportunity as we can.” Phil is urging anyone interested in performing at the festival to give him a call by the end of April. The theme this year is Halloween, and it will be the first time since the event started in 1970 that it has been held after Labour Weekend. Committee chairman Murray Chapman says the timing is always influenced and restricted by tide times for the various water events, and this year that means moving the main event to October 28. Eric Hanna has been a member of the local Seventh Day Adventist church for 40 years.

Church in tip top shape after half a century Around 200 people are expected to gather to celebrate the 50th Jubilee of the Orewa Seventh-day Adventist Church this month. It will include around six of the original 22 foundation members that first opened the church’s doors on April 22, 1967. Seventh-day Adventists are coming from around New Zealand and Australia to mark the occasion. The church’s original roof is being replaced in time for members to welcome guests for the Jubilee celebrations on April 21 and 22. A marquee will be erected with CCTV and sound to help all the visitors participate in the festivities, as the small chapel will be filled to capacity. The church had an extra room built on in 1976 where children’s classes are held, and a veranda was also added. In 1992 a Community Centre was built alongside the church, which is used for vegetarian cooking classes, seminars, health-related workshops and exercise classes. One of the pillars of the church is to live a healthy lifestyle and members do not smoke or drink, declining even tea and coffee. Many are also vegetarian or vegan. Now aged 86, Eric Hanna is in great health, which he says is because of this lifestyle. He has been a member of the church, with his wife Winsome, for 40 years. “When we joined, we were the youngest in the church and now we’re among the oldest,” he says. Eric acts as the church’s historian, caring for folders that contain copies of documents and photographs saved over the years. He has put together a slide show of more than 230 images to show members during the Jubilee. Currently the Orewa church has

around 50 members and many regularly attend the services, which are held on Saturdays. “It’s small enough so we know when someone’s missing,” Eric says. A total of 22 pastors have served at the church since it opened. Eric joined the church in Balmoral when he was 26 after reading a book given to him by one of the church’s door-to-door “Literature Evangelists”. “I was blown away by the prophecies,” he says. Brought up in the Anglican Church, Eric says he returned to the church as a family man who wanted his children to experience spiritual life. “I went back to the Anglican church and it didn’t do anything for me,” he says. Eric describes services at the church as traditional. “We haven’t gone down the road of modernizing hymns and things like that,” he says. “We have a conservative approach.” The 50th Jubilee is open to all and includes a Friday evening meeting on April 21 at 7pm and a church service on April 22 at 10.45am, with lunch provided. The Male North Shore Welsh Choir is expected to make the walls of the chapel ring with a performance on April 22 at 2.45pm (refreshments provided). Info: email erichanna82@gmail.com

The repainting of the old part of Estuary Arts Centre in Western Reserve, Orewa is underway. The idea is to integrate the older building better with the new extension. New guttering will be installed where needed. The roof is being repainted dark grey, the walls, light grey. The work is funded by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board.

Personality just one piece of the career puzzle Nicky Gumbrell has spent a long time studying what makes people tick and she reckons she can tell quite a lot about someone before she even brings out her Personality Puzzle cards. She has used her skills and qualification in speech and language therapy in various ways in the community – as well as speech therapy, she has helped senior students at local colleges think about what type of job they may be naturally wired to do. Nicky uses the Myers-Briggs theory of personality types (focused on the strength of nature, as opposed to nurture) as a basis for her work but uses the Personality Puzzle rather than questionnaires. She says that the puzzle cards help identify key personality traits such as whether you are introverted or extroverted, organised, creative and so on. She can then indicate the type of work that may suit you as a person. She emphasises that it is only part of the picture – which is also made up of a person’s skills and abilities, interests and goals. “I’d never exclude any career or tell someone who had their heart set on a particular career not to do it, but I would point out the possible challenges based around their strengths and weaknesses,” Nicky says. “People can fit into all sorts of jobs

but when you go against your natural personality it can cause a lot of stress. This process helps you find where you may flourish.” There are times when a consultation can lead to new discoveries, as happened recently with a former hairdresser who was looking for a new career direction and ended up realising IT would suit her best – something she had never considered before. There was also a 17-year-old boy who came to Nicky devastated that he had interviewed poorly for the Army, when that job had been his long-held goal. “The Army gave him feedback that he didn’t come across as having the ‘drive’ to be a soldier,” Nicky says. “During our session, using the Personality Puzzle, it became clear that this young man’s personality preferences were not likely to be fulfilled in the Army. Instead, he enrolled in a graphic art courts and went on to enjoy a career in an advertising/marketing company.” She says that while many people eventually find their perfect fit for a job, it can be an expensive and time consuming process involving a number of wrong turns. “Degrees, training and courses are a big cost, so having an idea of the path beforehand can save money,” she says. Grey matters with Simmone Dyer, Hibiscus Coast Grey Power president b.sdyer@xtra.co.nz

The power of a smile A feeling of loneliness has often attached itself to us at various stages of our lives. Perhaps in childhood as an only child with busy parents, or in moving to a new area and school and leaving friends behind. Perhaps not being able to make friends in teenage years or moving to a new country with a new job, or perhaps after the breakup of a marriage or death of a partner. Sadly some people live longer than their contemporaries and it can be difficult to make new friends. Loneliness is rather complex and is usually described as an unpleasant emotional response to isolation or lack of companionship. It is more than that though because loneliness can be felt even when we are surrounded by other people. We need to feel connected to people, to have a sense of belonging, to experience the warmth of friendship, to be understood and appreciated, to know we have friends we can call on in times of difficulty and who will not judge us adversely. Loneliness has existed in every society, in marriages, relationships, families, among so called successful and unsuccessful people as well as among people living on their own. However in spite of “networking” being a buzz word of today it seems that more and more people are experiencing loneliness. Most of us need a certain amount of solitude to recharge our batteries, to think, to rest and reflect but that is different from the emotional ache that comes with loneliness. Loneliness can be hard to quantify but some recent studies suggest that too many people have no one with whom to spend their free time or discuss important matters with. In the UK, research by Age UK shows half a million people over the age of 60 spend each day alone without social interaction and almost half a million more see and speak to no one for five to six days of the week. Within developed nations, loneliness has shown the largest increase among seniors and can lead to depression. I believe most families care deeply about their elderly parents and relations but in today’s world the working day consumes energy and time. The end of the day or week leaves little time to catch up on all the immediate family matters that have to be taken care of – housework, lawn and garden, shopping, children’s sports and so on. Then it is time to begin a new work week again. Retirement villages fill a need for relationships as well as security but even there I have met people who long to be remembered by their families. They know their families are busy but they still need to know they are loved and appreciated. So this is a plea to remember your elderly relatives, visit them regularly if you can or phone or send them a note. They will so appreciate it. And don’t forget the elderly in your street, maybe they need a quick visit, a phone call to see if they are okay and definitely a smile and a hello when you pass them at the local shops.

Fashionable sixties plus

The local 60s Up Hibiscus Coast Club focused on fashion recently, when they held a fashion show at their March meeting. Vice president Pat White says the club last held a fashion show around five years ago and this one was keenly anticipated. Millers of Coast Plaza supplied the clothing and an MC, Janice, for the show. All five models were club members and several garments were purchased. The 60s Up club has more than 100 members and meets at 10am every third Wednesday of the month at Whangaparaoa Community Hall. Info: phone Dorothy, 428 2075.

The 5 P's of Property It appears we are in a balanced property market phase, with the balance possibly shifting in favour of buyers. A key characteristic of this market is that buyers become pickier; as a result, some properties take much longer to sell than others. However, we have properties that are selling within days of hitting the market, sometimes achieving full asking price or even higher with a multi-offer situation. Why is this? Agents often talk about the 3 P´s in property. I´ve extended this to include a couple more P´s; Property, Position (location), Presentation, Promotion (marketing) & Price. These interact to make a property more or less desirable and therefore more or less sellable. In a hot market, just about any property will sell quickly for top dollar. When listings on the market increase and buyer numbers decrease, there is more choice and therefore properties with one or more issues are overlooked. Property issues might include; 2 bedrooms when most buyers are looking for 3, potential leaky home, steep site, flood prone area. Position issues might include road noise, unsightly views, long gravel roads, undesirable neighbours. Presentation issues might include a manky bathroom, untended gardens, dark rooms, peeling paint. Promotion issues may include not listing on popular sites like trademe, hougarden, realestate.co.nz, or advertising in media that does not reach your target market. Price is obvious; too high and the buyers won´t come, as the saying goes, "there is a message in the silence".

Some of these issues may be fixable, but if not, they can sometimes be overcome by adjusting price or promotion to attract more buyers and increase the chances of an offer. How do you know which P to fix? Ask a good agent!

Real Estate ... Easter Style Yes, You Can Say It ... WOW!!!

$1,395,000 Family Living At Its Best ... By Big Manly Beach

Karen Franklin

Well here we are at the end of term one and daylight saving has finished ‌ at least we have a couple of long weekends ahead if you add the Monday to Anzac Day and, of course, Easter. As you may have noticed there is a lot of stock coming onto the market, all for differing reasons ... leaving the area, downsizing or simply a change. I certainly have my fair share of listings – here are a few of them including two “home and incomesâ€? - all of which will be available for viewing at your leisure during Easter and the holidays, just call to make an appointment instead of having to rush to open homes and then only having a few minutes. I also have several section listings for those of you wanting to build your ‘dream home’. You will notice most have prices to make life easy and also to encourage conditional buying which is a slightly less stressful way of buying. Have a great Easter, hope the Easter bunny is kind to you and give me a call if you are looking for a change of scenery.

At this month’s meeting, members of the Rebus club of Hibiscus Coast were able to view their new defibrillator. A demonstration of how it works was provided by St John northern region business development manager Scott Lewis. The defibrillator will accompany members on weekly walking groups as well as being taken to meetings and on monthly bus trips. Funds to purchase the lifesaving equipment were raised by member donation, topped up from the club’s coffers. Rebus Hibiscus Coast president George Tregidga says that while it has been gratifying to see the tremendous support given by members, he hopes that this will be one club asset which will seldom, if ever, be needed. Cultural differences celebrated at Dairy Flat A special day was held at Dairy Flat School last week to celebrate the many cultures that make up this country. Students came to school on Friday, April 7 dressed in traditional costumes to reflect their heritage and a hangi was served along with foods from other countries. There were a number of different cultural activities held throughout the day, including a visit from students from Orewa College who performed a Japanese dance. Principal Debbie Marshall says that the school is increasingly multicultural. Five years ago the roll was made up of 84 percent NZ/other European, 5 percent Asian, 8 percent Maori, 2 percent MELAA (Middle Eastern, Latin American, African) and 1 percent Pacific people. Today the percentage of NZ/other European has dropped to 68 percent, the number of Asian students has more than doubled to 11 percent, and MELAA people have dramatically increased to 10 percent. The numbers with Maori and Pacific heritage have remained similar at 10 percent Maori and 1 percent Pacific.

Peninsula Players facing the final curtain

Amateur theatre on the Coast is facing a big loss with the news that Peninsula Players is likely to close after almost 40 years. The club, which was formed by the late Ernie Stanley in 1980, is holding an annual meeting on April 30 which Players long time member Robin Espie says will “formalise the winding up of the society”, although that final decision rests with members. Robin first performed with the Players in the 1980s and says it’s been a great club but no longer has enough members to make it sustainable. He is one of several members who say that the loss of the group’s former home base and theatre venue at Whangaparaoa Hall, in 2011, was a key nail in the coffin. Since then Peninsula Players has operated out of a building in Brightside Road, Stanmore Bay but this offered limited performance and storage space and was used mainly for meetings and rehearsals. Robin says recently a small group of members had found a suitable venue for performances and were going to resurrect one of their shows, but there were not enough members to make it work.

From left, Peninsula Players’ Robin the Hood in 2010 and Snow White in 2013 were typical in that they featured local actors aged from eight to 80. The Players’ annual pantomime was a family show with audience participation encouraged.

The club has a proud record of mentoring the Coast’s young performers, technicians and stagehands, as well as giving them their first taste of live theatre. Many later went on to roles at Centrestage and beyond.

“We’ve faced tough times in the past but managed to keep going due to the wide support that Peninsula Players enjoys from the community,” Robin says. “But I believe that, despite all our efforts, this is the end of the road.”

Peninsula Players saved my life

Local actor Shelley Charlton credits Peninsula Players with saving her life. “I was depressed, heading for divorce, with no friends on the Coast and no family in NZ,” she says. “I was considering suicide. However, I decided to do something scary instead and auditioned for my first play since leaving school, 22 years before.” She was cast in Peninsula Players’ production of Dad’s Army, which lit a spark within her for amateur theatre and introduced her to many new friends. Shelley went on to write, direct and produce a

Blackadder series, initially at the Players’ Brightside Road venue. “We had so much fun. It wasn’t the most polished performance but we got the laughs and applause from a supportive audience.” The shows went on to further success at Centrestage. Shelley says it is very important to keep amateur theatre going for those not ready for Centrestage, or who want a more casual approach or to try out new things. She is hopeful that The Performance Lab, started by Phil Lodge from Whangaparaoa Library may fill that gap.

What’s new in asthma? World Asthma Day (May 2) is upon us and winter draws near. This is the time when we see many people in the pharmacy with their asthma flaring up. If you are one of the 520,000 New Zealanders taking medication for asthma, here are some facts that you might find interesting. The key recommendation in the newly released NZ Asthma Guidelines, is to urge people to use action plans to manage their condition. Be prepared for winter and organise an action plan for yourself and/or your child. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for help. • SMART stands for Single Inhaler Maintenance and Reliever Therapy. It was NZ research that helped demonstrate that SMART inhalers’, which contain medicines for short-term symptoms and long-term control of asthma, are very effective in helping people control their asthma. • There are some new inhaler medications available that only need to be taken once a day. Your doctor can advise what is best for your asthma • Then there is a new series of devices that replace or add on to your existing asthma inhaler. They offer functions from simple reminders for you to take your medication through to tracking your usage to your phone. They have recently been successfully trialed with children in NZ but are not available to buy here as yet • There is a simple test that you can take to find out whether you are controlling your asthma, or your asthma is controlling you. The test can be found on www. asthmacontrol.co.nz and is worth doing even if you have done it before, as asthma can change over time • A newly completed UK study looked at how important colour association is to the type of inhaler, particularly given all the new types of inhalers on the market and their different colours. It seems very important, as in my experience the majority of patients refer to the blue colour of their inhaler when speaking about their reliever • Spacers can be your friend – you can get up to 50 percent more of your medication by using a spacer than you can by using your inhaler alone. Spacers make co-ordination easier plus they are just as effective as a Nebulizer, so very helpful for an acute asthma episode. Both children and adults benefit from using a spacer when taking a puffer inhaler and they are available free of charge.

Plenty of laughs and some extremely good bowls were the order of the day at the North Shore & Northern Probus Association’s Jim McGlone Bowling Tournament held at Orewa Bowling Club on April 2. The event was run by Eric Cockerton on behalf of the Orewa Rebus Club (last year’s winners) and sponsored by Evelyn Page Retirement Village. Eight teams from five clubs took part in the tournament and Eric says that all bowled well. The eventual winner was the Red Beach Combined Club, with the Birkenhead Combined Club second and Rebus Club of Manly third. The Red Beach Combined Club is pictured with event organiser Eric Cockerton (second from right).

Blast from the Past with Susanne Wilson, Hibiscus Coast History on Facebook

Red Beach in the mid-1950s was an idyllic wee holiday settlement. There were very few permanent residents in the bay but they all relied on each other for support and produce. However, during the summer months the population would swell with holidaymakers – often from Wainui or Waitoki – moving in for weeks at a time. Marellen Drive was a cul-de-sac, with the Bayes homestead to the right at the end of the road. Farmland dominated the area that we now know as Marellen and William Bayes, heading up the hill. The foreground of this photo shows Pinewoods Holiday camp, and you can clearly see where it got its name! Photo, courtesy of Debbie Bayes.

Hazel is the RSA’s oldest member and is part of the Women’s Section. She has featured in a number of stories in Hibiscus Matters and was notably still driving at the age of 100. She had an accident-free record, but says she has given up her licence now and relies on her sister Meryl Wilson to drive her.

Ormonde Stoney, the second son of Walter Butler and Laura Jane Stoney, was born in the Stoney family homestead, Seaview, in 1895 – the building that opened recently as a community hub in Millwater. He was raised there with his older brother Vivian and three sisters and attended school in Silverdale as well as spending a year at St John’s school in Auckland. He then returned to work on the family farm and by all accounts enjoyed the rural life. In 1915, shortly after he turned 20, Ormonde volunteered for the army. He went to Trentham camp as part of the 12th Reinforcement on January 12, 1916. The troup sailed from Wellington on May 1 of that year aboard Ulimaroa and Ormonde noted that “the cheers as we left sounded well”. The voyage took them to Suez in Egypt then on to England and France. Not long before they arrived, the NZ Division experienced their first major offensive battle in the Somme where almost a third of their numbers were killed or wounded. Replacements were required and Ormonde was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the NZ Rifle Brigade. He joined the unit in Flanders. Here he and the new arrivals were introduced to the horrors of trench warfare and were greeted by the cold of the worst winter for a generation. As the weather warmed, the ice gave way to trenches filled with slush. Conditions slowly improved as summer came and on June 7, 1917 he was involved in a big attack over a front that included the German stronghold of Messines. The NZ soldiers were heavily involved in capturing that village, although with heavy casualties. Ormonde then became a battalion signaller – a job no less dangerous than that of a rifleman, requiring installing and repairing phone lines to the front

under artillery barrage and providing situation reports to battalion HQ. Ormonde was granted leave in England in October 1917, where he caught up with relatives in Hampshire. Then it was back to trench warfare in Flanders and more misery and frequent gas bombardments. Early in July 1918, Ormonde succumbed to Spanish flu and was eventually admitted to hospital in Brockenhurst, Hampshire. He was repatriated to New Zealand, still with “impaired general health”, and arrived back in Auckland on January 20, 1919. He acquired a farm in Northland up at the head of Kaihu Valley, where he lived for the next 19 years. In 1932 he married Constance Small and they raised a family of three daughters and one son. The family returned to the Silverdale area in 1939, just before the start of World War II. In 1942, Ormonde enlisted in the home guard, after which he continued to farm until he retired. Ormonde died on January 20, 1988 at the age of 93.

An eco-turf that re-uses plastic and rubber is expected to be laid on Hibiscus Coast Hockey’s grounds in Metro Park East in June. Hibiscus Hockey Trust chair Merv Huxford says that it’s the first time in the world that this turf has been used for hockey (there are 10 used internationally for football pitches). Around 46 tonnes of plastic and rubber that would otherwise have been destined for landfill are being re-used in the manufacture of a porous shock pad for the turf, by Tiger Turf. Hibiscus Hockey has also brought in LED floodlighting that can reduce power consumption by 50 percent compared with metal halide lights. When the turf is laid, it offers around 125,000 litres of water harvesting capacity. Pictured are the first rolls of turf coming off the production line in Onehunga, destined for Metro Park East.

Athlete Profile

April 12, 2017 | Hibiscusmatters |

Trevor Wilson

25

Age 46, Tindalls Bay

From desk to decathlon

Trevor Wilson says that sport at Masters level may be challenging for the body, but it’s great for the mind. The Tindalls Bay architectural designer will compete in the 45–50 age category in three events – the decathlon, long jump and 400m – at the World Masters Games this month and he says his focus leading up to the games is trying to get through his training uninjured. “I spend a lot of money at the physio,” he says. The 10 decathlon sports – 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m – are designed to test all round athletic strength, speed and skill. Combined, it can be an injury minefield – something Trevor, who has had double hip surgery, is well aware of. Several years of competing in various athletics disciplines came together when Trevor decided to take on his first decathlon, last year, at the World Masters Athletics Championship in Perth. He says the camaraderie at the event was a highlight along with training alongside some inspirational older athletes – some in their 90s. He also learned that it wasn’t a good idea to cycle to and from the competition. “Cycling to the stadium took half an hour each way and combined with the competition on day one, my legs were stuffed,” Trevor says. “I made sure I got a lift the second day.” Although he injured his right knee in Perth, his sixth placing was all the inspiration he needed to enter the decathlon again for this year’s World Masters Games. An overuse injury to a tendon in his other knee is

causing him some concern as he trains at Millenium Stadium and on the grass track at Metro Park East. He says although it’s been challenging to master the shot put, discus and javelin in particular, the variety of techniques required for the decathlon is what he enjoys most. “I’m more of a sprinter and jumper than a thrower,” he says. “Your throwing arm goes a bit as you get older and you have a couple of good ones in you, then your shoulder is stuffed.” “It’s worth taking that risk that your body holds together because this is an amazing opportunity.” Trevor says he’s also keen to go to the next World Masters Games, in Japan in 2021. “Masters is good for mental health. It’s great to get out of the office at the end of the day and get your lungs working. I’m actually looking forward to turning 50 so I’ll be youngest in my age group again; the hurdles will be lower, and the shot put, discus and javelin will be lighter!”

Games facts and figures

The World Masters Games take place April 21–30. It is the largest multi-sport event in the world. yy New Zealand is fielding the most participants – a total of 10,594 – followed by Australia with 6966. yy The most popular team sport is basketball, with 170 teams registered. What your company specialises in: Residential and commercial services, electrical upgrades, home and commercial wiring and re-wiring, phone cable and data services, alarm and security as well as gate and intercom installations as well as automation. What are the essential skills and experience that you bring to this trade/service? The company is managed and directed by a registered electrician who has spent more than 11 years working in the industry, here and overseas. I enjoy keeping up to date with new products and equipment and have the ability to talk to clients in relation to plans and what electrical fit out would best suit their needs. I always aim to please the customer. What is it about this job that gets you out of bed in the morning and keeps you motivated? I have recently taken on a new apprentice to help keep up with demand. This has added to my drive to please customers, while teaching him as much as possible about the trade. Sometimes the smallest job can be just as rewarding as the bigger jobs and it is the clients’ satisfaction that gives me my drive and motivation. Tell us about your favourite aspect of the job, and/or the key piece of equipment in your toolbox and why you would not be without it. My favourite part of the job is the smile on the client’s face when I have completed their new house or project, along with getting referrals from existing clients. Lighting is just as important as other aspects of building – whether it be a new build, a renovation or a touch up. Good lighting picks up and highlights positive features, showcasing the best qualities of the house. Customers can count on you because? I am honest, reliable and will always communicate with each client and keep them informed of my day to day plans that affect them personally. I provide the highest level and quality of work for each and every job that I sign up to.

Big wins for junior champs

For the first time, a team from the Hibiscus Coast Cricket Club get to hold the Club of Origin Tim Simmons Cup aloft. Life member Tim Simmons is to the right, in green.

Cricket wins Club of Origin After facing down a tough draw against top North Harbour teams, Hibiscus Coast Cricket’s Club of Origin team lifted the Tim Simmons Cup for the first time last month. Club of Origin is contested by six the win as “a historic occasion for the teams in the North Harbour region, club” and says it was an honour to predominantly Year 11 players. present the trophy. “It’s a fantastic The contest has been running for result that has put the club on the around 15 years and six years ago a map,” Tim says. winner’s cup was named after Hibiscus Coach Bevon Jacobs says the team Coast Cricket Life Member Tim had to beat a strong Takapuna team Simmons – something he says was to and last year’s winners, North Shore, reward him for his services to North to reach the final, which was played Harbour cricket. against East Coast Bays. He describes bowled out East Coast Bays for 100.

Eight-year-old Ruby Dennis of Red Beach sprinted her way to a gold medal recently, moving up from fifth to first place in the final straight of the 200m event. In the process, she became the first competitor from the Hibiscus Coast Athletics Club to win a gold medal – in any grade – at an Auckland Athletics Championship. The club became affiliated with Auckland Athletics and Athletics NZ three years ago when it re-established itself at Metro Park East in Millwater. This gave its members the ability to compete against athletes from all the other Auckland clubs. President David Kayes says the win reflects new talent coming through in the junior division as well as coaching from Olympic decathlete Brent Newdick and Matt Bloxham, the current U20 record holder for hammer throwing. As well as winning the Girls’ 200m in her age group, Ruby also won bronze for the 60m at the event, which was held at Waitakere Stadium last month. Another club member, nine-year-old Joel Brewer, jumped a personal best to win silver in the Boys’ Long Jump. The athletics season has now finished and cross country will begin at Hibiscus Coast Athletics Club next month. From top, Ruby Dennis won Hibiscus Coast Athletics first gold medal, competing against runners from all over Auckland. Joel Brewer took silver in the long jump.
