volunteers and rangers identified and blocked potential pathways where the birds could escape the pest proof fence. Volunteers also made transfer boxes and temporary nest burrows. Twelve people have been trained to monitor the birds via radio transmitters. This monitoring will be carried out almost daily to start with. Call count surveys will also be undertaken in due course to work out the population density. The total bill for introducing a viable population of 40 birds into the sanctuary is expected to be around $68,000. SOSSI chair Peter Jackson says the recent translocation cost around $38,000. A further 20 Kiwi will be released sometime between 2018-20 at a cost of $30,000. Enough money for the first release has been raised, with grants from Becroft Foundation, Foundation North, Kiwis4Kiwi, Auckland Council and donations from the public. Open sanctuaries senior ranger Matt Maitland says the support, which has come in many forms, has been appreciated. “People were very keen to see it happen and whether they helped build boxes, made new barriers – including the major task of clearing and repurposing a retaining wall – or donated money, the community stepped up.”

He says the presence of Kiwi within the sanctuary will mean that the No Dog policy will be even more strictly enforced inside the pest proof fence and that people leaving the park at night need to be especially careful in case Kiwi are on the road. Hibiscus Matters went with rangers to one of the release sites, deep within the sanctuary. Photos and video of the Kiwi release is at localmatters. co.nz linked to this story.

Tracking trial

SOSSI’s Kiwi release has enabled some state of the art tracking technology to be trialled. Plant and Food Research is developing an automated tracking system – a network of antennae that scans for frequencies from the birds’ radio transmitters and can provide a lot of accurate information about their whereabouts and movements. Open Sanctuaries senior ranger Matt Maitland says the system provides a longer time exposure than the snapshot that is obtained from handheld monitoring devices. Reports come in automatically and can warn of any potential issues. The trial by Plant and Food Research scientists is taking place in collaboration with Auckland Council.

Charges laid for gate crashing A local man has been charged with careless driving after a pest proof gate at Shakespear Open Sanctuary was torn off its hinges in January. The gate was at the entrance to the NZ Defence Force land at Army Bay and the Defence Force provided security camera footage of the incident. A vehicle hit the gate at speed on January 28 at around midnight.

Snr Sergeant Jason Homan of Orewa Police says that a 27-year-old local man has appeared in the North Shore District Court on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle. The gate has since been repaired. Who will pay for the damage remains unclear, although the Defence Force and Auckland Council may seek reparation.

Search for Stig a community effort Rodney MP Mark Mitchell continues his rise up the ranks, picking up the Defence portfilio in the recent parliamentary reshuffle. He says that his new responsibilities will not mean that the electorate takes a back seat. It appears that support goes both ways after the community rallied last month to find the Mitchell family’s lost black Labrador, Stig. Security camera footage shows that Stig ran away from his Orewa home after the family’s other dog, Great Dane Zara, managed to open the door. Zara also went AWOL, but returned the same day. Stig was missing for almost a week. No stone was unturned in the search – the family’s plea on Facebook attracted 60,000 views and local police alerted the highway patrol. Mark’s wife Peggy injured her leg while searching in thick bush. Stig was eventually spotted by several members of the

public who phoned police concerned the dog may cause an accident by running on the northern motorway. Snr Sgt Jason Homan and a small team went after him. Jason knows the Mitchells well, and, like Mark, is a former member of the Police Dog section. He found a bedraggled Stig in bush near the toll cameras. The dog had lost 6kg. “The vet said he wouldn’t have made it through another day,” Jason says. “He’s so glad to be home,” Mark says. “He’s worn the pads off his back paws but he’s recovering well. The tail hasn’t stopped wagging, so that still works ok! We want to thank everyone who supported us and helped look for Stig.”

Images of this 50m long slip in Matakatia appeared on TV following the storm in the wake of Cyclone Debbie early last month. Below it sits the house of Graham Midgley. Along with several of his neighbours, Graham was evacuated during the storm, returning after he was given the all clear by Civil Defence five nights later. Almost a month after the slip happened, he is still removing mud and debris by the truckload. Trees that were carried down the hill on a tide of brown water ended up on top of his rainwater tank. He is also still waiting to hear from Auckland Council: advice he received from a geotechnical engineer was that the slip was caused by stormwater flowing from properties on Whangaparaoa Road down onto a strip of Council land above his property, which became sodden and gave way. As a retired farmer, Graham says he knows the land. He recently spoke with the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board in an attempt to get Council’s attention. “The stormwater system is not coping and I would like it properly assessed and dealt with,” he says. “The land along the edge of the Council reserve strip is sodden and slumping and the engineer told me that the next bit is ‘ready to go’,” Graham said. “I’m afraid another big slip could take my home with it.” It’s a risk that Council’s head of operational management and maintenance, Agnes McCormack, says is low. “A council geotechnical specialist visited the Matakatia Parade slip on Good Friday and

determined that it occurred across the boundary of the public reserve and privately-owned land and should significant rainfall happen again, further smaller slips may occur but that the risk to life or the main house is low,” she says. “Steep slopes such as this are naturally only marginally stable.” “It is unlikely a faulty stormwater pipe contributed to this landslide. There is a stormwater collection system in the reserve behind Matakatia Parade and it appears to be functioning, based on a visual inspection. Overland flow is likely to have occurred during the rainfall from the reserve as the rainfall event was larger than most stormwater systems are designed for.” Council will monitor the site and provide advice on addressing the issue, long-term. “In general the most effective way to stabilise this style of slip is with slope regrading and planting. Council is scoping these works on the reserve, and will recommend that the landowner undertakes similar work on their land.”

Snr Sgt Jason Homan, left, says it was “terrific” to be able to find Stig and return him to Rodney MP Mark Mitchell and his family.

Red Beach recalled

Great to see Red Beach as it was in your photo Blast from the Past (HM April 12) – thanks to you and Debbie Bays. Back in the mid fifties and sixties Holeproof Clothing used their two trucks to bring staff for our annual picnic to Red Beach. They were fitted out with seats either side and a back-to-back row in the middle (also used for staff pick up) – no seat belts back then. I have often tried to visualise how the beach looked back then. I seem to remember a shop back from the beach but can’t seem to pinpoint where that was when I go there most mornings. RSA not alone Sadly this club is not the only RSA being run by committees that has failed in the last 10-20 years in New Zealand (RSA financial battle, HM April 12). The club’s constitution probably prohibits a business-like management approach due to the focus needed to primarily look after their aging members, restrict club membership (in the past) and support the organisation at a national level. The $35,000 per year needed just for the national body must be crippling on its own. Therefore a change in the management structure should be the primary focus. I’m sure this can be achieved whilst still assisting those aging members requiring club

Other clubs on the North Shore with less facilities for members have managed to increase membership and club participation plus return to a positive trading position just by opening up membership to the wider community and reducing the membership fees to just $25 for over 60s. A normal motorist would consider the speed limit on these two roads to be dangerous. Can you do anything to bring this matter to the attention of those responsible? Darrol Walton, Orewa Editor’s note: This letter was forwarded to local board deputy chair Janet Fitzgerald who raised the concerns with Auckland Transport.

Anger boils over

School fee suggestion

As long standing supporters of the Hibiscus Coast RSA, we went to attend the meeting on April 9 (HM April 12) only to find nowhere to park. It makes our blood boil that these so called members show up when there is a problem but never come in for a meal or drinks. The club’s survival depends on support from all its members, not just the few who want to put the boot in. Bruce and Val Hall, Little Manly

Safe speeds I am writing to you concerning a matter that I consider needs attention. Pine Valley Road, which turns off Dairy Flat Road in Silverdale and is a rather flat straight road, has a speed limit of 80kph. Upper Orewa Road at the back end of Orewa, is a winding road with several sharp corners and has a speed limit of 100kph. Upper Orewa Road

Thirty years ago I was on the Board of Trustees for a secondary school in a low decile area. Collecting fees was always a struggle, particularly as many families had more than one child at the school. I suggested that the fees for each subsequent child should be reduced by $10 and that a 10 percent discount be offered for prompt payment. As a result, the parents had an incentive to pay and the school benefited by a record number of fees paid. Jeanette Grant, Arkles Bay

Feedback cont... Council queries cost We continually hear comments on the high cost of building and constant complaints of the excessive demands and charges by Auckland Council for various building consents. Along with this are the regular reports of delays caused by questionable demands for additional details, which in turn might raise questions as to the competence of the applicant and their various professionals making those submissions. Or does it go deeper than that, as highlighted in the Hibiscus Matters item (April 1) on the proposed Orewa beach seawall which includes the following statement: “Despite the massive volumes of detailed documentation prepared by the Council’s engineers and staff in support of the proposed wall, Council’s resource consent team asked for more information in order to progress the application.” This seawall is being proposed, prepared, progressed, investigated, designed and approved by one single entity, the Auckland Council. Does this mean one department of Council has no real idea what another department actually requires? Does it perhaps mean one department is incapable of producing adequate information to their own council’s requirements. Or are others

in the organisation unable to actually interpret the information provided? Perhaps it displays an element of bureaucratic power play, or is it simply incompetence? As ever, it is costing us, the ratepayers, a great deal of unnecessary expense. John Simons, Orewa (abridged)

Bike rack – one year and counting How long does it take to get a bike rack installed in a public place? This was the question raised by Hibiscus & Bays Local Board member Caitlin Watson at a recent meeting – and, according to a report by Auckland Transport (AT), the answer could be more than a year. The local board asked AT to put bike racks in Gulf Harbour Reserve back in February last year, for use by ferry passengers. At the time, AT advised that the location had been added to its ‘Bike Parking Candidate Register’. Entries on this register were to be considered as part of developing a 2016/17 Bike Parking programme. Not a lot has happened since then which Caitlin says is very frustrating. “Frankly, it’s an inexpensive essential that should be easy to put in place,” Caitlin says. “It’s been made into a big deal by AT but it’s just a simple bike rack. Bike racks are an integral part of a public transport system, which AT is supposed to prioritise. It’s especially

Chamber CEO takes aim at local politicians over Penlink Feelings ran high at a meeting held last Friday, ostensibly to discuss the Chamber of Commerce’s submission in favour of Penlink to Auckland Council’s Annual Plan. Things became heated when Chamber chief executive Michael Barnett put up a slide of a battle scene and claimed that when it came to building the Penlink Road, Rodney MP Mark Mitchell and Auckland councillors John Watson and Wayne Walker were “missing in action”. The accusation brought applause from the audience of around 50 people who came to the meeting on Friday, April 28. It also brought an angry response from the councillors who then spoke about the key issue of the Council’s debt/ revenue ratio, and answered questions. Cr John Watson said that the work being done by the Chamber over the past two years, which includes surveys, lobbying and speaking with potential funders, has already been going on for at least 20 years and that the key problem remains the same – funding the almost $400 million project. Mayor Phil Goff has said that he cannot afford to have Penlink add to the debt side of the Council’s ledger, which has taken the “public” part of any Public Private Partnership that could fund building of the road off the table. Cr Wayne Walker said that this is why the efforts of himself and Cr Watson have been directed towards alternative means of infrastructure funding. As tempers began to rise, Mr Barnett agreed with Hibiscus & Bays Local Board chair Julia Parfitt’s suggestion that the meeting be “a call to action” rather than “missing in action”. He made a plea for “new ideas” for Penlink funding. His suggestions include infrastructure bonds. These attract investment despite relatively low returns because investors like the idea that money goes into infrastructure. He also mentioned a lottery run in Brisbane, which was used to fund infrastructure.

Viewpoint with Phil Goff, Auckland Mayor phil.goff@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Fuel tax still on wish list

Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett went in, all guns blazing, last week accusing Rodney MP Mark Mitchell and Crs Wayne Walker and John Watson of not working to bring forward Penlink.

A suggestion was made that Penlink could be funded entirely by private business, taking public money out of the equation. Mr Barnett said he has raised this with the Mayor, asking him to approach Government so that the NZ Transport Agency can start the process that could allow the build to be privately funded. The amount of residential development, as opposed to commercial development that brings local jobs, was also a theme of the meeting. Mrs Parfitt said that the local board is funding an investigation to find out “what is stopping Silverdale from developing into a business hub?” because the issue is a key concern. MP denies ‘missing in action’ claim Mark Mitchell sent his apologies to the meeting because he was out of Auckland. However, he told Hibiscus Matters that he runs meetings every quarter with AT and NZTA and that Michael Barnett is welcome to attend. “We’ve had good wins through that process, including progress on funding for Hill Street,” he says. “I work closely with the local board and put the case for Penlink forward at every opportunity.”

April was a busy month, with lots of things happening. Not all of them were welcome. The weather bombs in March and April – where over five weeks we got more than six months rainfall – tested our systems. While events that limited the capacity of Ardmore’s Water Treatment Plant may have been unprecedented, the clear message from the risk it potentially posed shows that we need to build more resilience into our clean water supply. Having safe, healthy water is fundamental. The World Masters Games in late April is the biggest event in Auckland since the Rugby World Cup. The right to hold the Games was won by Auckland against cities from 15 other cities around the world. With 28,000 participants from over 100 countries, it was the change for Auckland to mark itself out as an exciting and hospitable city. It was an event staged over 45 locations that enabled Aucklanders and visitors alike to celebrate sport and send the message that age is not a barrier to engaging with it. Our oldest competitor was 101 years old! It is estimated that the Games brought over $30 million in spending to Auckland, including 240,000 visitor nights. On other fronts, I have been engaging with Government on the need for it to enable Auckland to fund the pressing infrastructure needs created as the city grows by over 800 people (and cars!) a week. Discussions with the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance about allowing Auckland to access the Housing Infrastructure Fund of $1b have been quite helpful, but the amount we actually need is many times this level. Some in Government feel that we should be putting rates up substantially to pay for infrastructure, but this would mean rate increases of around 16 percent a year. I don’t think that massive rates increases are the way to fund our share of meeting infrastructure needs and I don’t want to do that. A road pricing system would be much more sensible. I haven’t given up on a regional fuel tax as a better option, as it is easy and quick to do and cheap to administer. Auckland is prepared to pay its share. However I am mindful of the fact that the growth occurring in Auckland hugely benefits central government through greater income and company tax and GST. Government wants Auckland to grow rapidly but they should be prepared to match population growth with funding to allow infrastructure to meet the extra needs imposed on it. We have big challenges ahead of us. However I would rather have growth than stagnation as a challenge. Our problems arise in part because Auckland is attractive as a great city to live in. Central Government and the city need to work together to make sure that we can deal with growth pressures and maintain the quality of life in the city we live in and love.

Dementia-friendly bank

Westpac has become New Zealand’s first dementia-friendly bank, earning an award from Alzheimers NZ last month. The award recognises organisations that improve access to services for those with dementia and meet selected criteria across seven standards in its Dementia-friendly programme. Alzheimers NZ chief Executive Catherine Hall says that the programme can work in any business environment. It could include things such as simplifying an organisation’s layout and educating employees so they can better assist people with dementia. The award is valid for two years. The club began in 2003. It is based in Orewa, but members surf all over Auckland and Northland. The contest attracted more than 70 surfers, aged 11 to 67. It opened with a special ceremony where handfuls of sand from various surf beaches that are significant to members were mixed in a silver bowl. Family members of those who had died placed the sand into the surf at Waipu Cove.

Building with Karyn Phillips karyn@trenzhomes.co.nz

Is mindset the matter? Recently I was approached to do a 300 home subdivision in Long Bay within a 10-year timeframe. It’s hard to know how to respond to this, because although it’s exciting and a huge opportunity, it’s also an impossibility in today’s building industry. I can’t think of any company able to pull this off right now. We are in the middle of a building boom and desperately short of houses. The Unitary Plan has opened up a whole lot more land for building on (including many back yards) and there are Special Housing Areas, but we are lacking in one area which seems to have been forgotten in the government/council push for achieving their build targets: skilled labour. The skill shortage runs from council having enough administration, planners, and engineers to process the consents, through to consultants, specialists, and tradespeople in all relevant industries to carry out the work. Everyone is desperately short of reliable, skilled, and committed staff. To illustrate this point, just think about the Hibiscus Coast Facebook page where there are regular posts by people who say they have been let down by their builder/plumber/electrician’. There are also plenty of requests for someone to “come tomorrow to fix my burst pipe/light”. As you drive around the Coast, you’ll be aware of the staggering amount of trade vehicles on the road. And the amount of advertisements for tradespeople is overwhelming. Everyone in the building industry is busy and frantic. What does that mean for you? For a start, it means patience and increased cost. Costs for anything building related right now are high, and getting the right trades people costs more. Everything takes much longer, timeframes blow out, many are overcommitted. Networking is incredibly important and the best way to find someone reliable. In search of a solution, I spoke with Dr Ian Greenwood, an engineer who travels worldwide for his job, and is also a Coastie. I’ve decided he may have a solution for the resourcing issue, but it requires a huge mindset change. In January, the overseas project Dr Greenwood was working on required the construction of 10,500km of paved roads in 18 months (or around 580km/ month). By comparison the new 18.5km road from Puhoi to Warkworth is intended to take five years (or around 0.3km/month). To put that difference in perspective, his project would complete that 18.5km in one day – including an hour for a beer to celebrate a job well done. When I asked why construction in NZ takes so long, his answer was very enlightening: “My view is that in NZ expectations are often set around what a typical contracting crew can achieve. Whereas places like India and China work in reverse – they say ‘we want this in 18 months’ and make industry ‘resource up’. These countries also think bigger. China let a single contract to build 1000km of rail. Consequently that contractor buys the biggest and best equipment, whereas often in NZ our projects are small, and done with smaller equipment.” The question then becomes, Is NZ ready for this mindset change? For the building industry to ‘resource up’ to the necessary levels would mean bringing skilled migrant workers in, recruiting apprentices straight out of college, hiring translators – and that’s just the start. Maybe it’s a case of thinking bigger than just looking for someone to build a house, but instead building entire communities, such as the Tamaki regeneration project. Do we, as a community, want this? Or are we happy to slowly grind our way out of the housing shortage? Opinions welcome (email at the top of the column).

Ferries facing funding barrier

Orewa seawall submissions sought

Auckland Council publicly notified its proposal to build a seawall on Orewa Beach between Kohu Street and Marine View recently (HM April 1). This means the public can have a say on the details of what has finally been proposed after a long period of informal consultation last year. The consent application was lodged on December 23 and more information was sought before the resource consent team were able to notify it. The proposed construction involves building a seawall approximately 600m long, with a footpath and landscaping on the public reserve on top of the wall, access ramps and stairs. Kinloch Reserve in particular will be affected, with works there including

the replacement of the footbridge, relocation of the watermain, construction of a timber groyne at the mouth of the channel and naturalisation of the dune. Two pohutukawas in the reserve are to be removed under the proposal. It is also proposed to store construction materials in Victor Eaves Park while the work is underway. The estimated cost of building this section of seawall is $6m (over three years). Council estimates it will cost around $50,000 a year to maintain the wall.

Funding to build the wall will be based on where Orewa sits in terms of Council’s coastal work priorities. Council’s principal project manager, Ian Murray, says that the seawall and walkway is a key priority. “Funding allocation will be considered following the outcome of the resource consent process,” he says. Submissions close at 5pm on May 12. Written submissions can be sent to Auckland Council, Private Bag 92300, Auckland, 1142 or made online at aucklandcouncil.govt.nz (look for publicly notified resource consents).

Bus station a 12 month process

Work is underway on increasing the parking capacity of the Silverdale Park and Ride and meanwhile, in a recent report to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, Auckland Transport produced a more detailed timeline for work on the next stage, which includes building the busway station. The process of designing and building the station is expected to take a year. Next month, the design of the building will be prepared and in July a consent application will be lodged with Auckland Council for construction. AT anticipates that the consent will be granted by Council in August and the work will go out to tender in October. A contractor will be awarded the work in November and construction of the bus station is expected to take until June 2018.

Auckland Transport responded positively to the local board’s plea on behalf of residents for a weekend ferry service from Gulf Harbour to and from the city, however funding is the next hurdle to overcome. Last month Hibiscus & Bays Local Board members met Auckland Transport’s chief metro officer, Mark Lambert to discuss demand for weekend ferry sailings which included presenting the findings of a recent survey (HM April 12). Local board chair Julia Parfitt said that they got “a favourable hearing” and that AT will come back with a proposal. In a recent report to the local board, AT says that the significant increase in ferry sailings, which started last October, had so far only delivered a real increase in patronage of around 5–7 percent, which was not as high as anticipated. However, the report says that AT has requested prices for a further increase in weekday services, as well as an option of weekend services as part of its current contract tendering process. It points out that this process will provide an insight into the likely cost of weekend service provision. Mrs Parfitt says that the board will need to put forward a strong case for funding, which is likely to come from a contestable pool. Are you following us on facebook www.facebook.com/hibiscusmatters

Super opportunity for young swimmers

Local swimmers and coaches are among those taking part in a Super Swim Squad Camp on the North Shore this week (May 6 and 7). The camp brings together 36 young swimmers (all aged 8–12) who were selected by winning their age group at one of the 200m OceanKids events held during the NZ Ocean Swim Series. The two-day camp gives the youngsters an opportunity to be mentored by top swimmers. It includes coaching sessions in both a pool and ocean environment, with an emphasis on confidence building. Northern Arena coaches Dean and Steven Kent are on the coaching team, which also includes Paralympians Nikita Howarth and Rebecca Dubber. Hannah Turner from Red Beach and James Donovan of Puhoi are included in the squad. This is the fifth year that the squad has been run.

Having set Mick a difficult task, with a challenging house that was midrefurbishment, against all odds he kept his promise that he would find the right buyer. We were kept updated throughout the whole process and he went above and beyond working throughout the holidays. As we were out of the area, he was a crucial point of contact for access for many people on our behalf. What a fantastic start to 2017 for us. We have no hesitation in recommending his services. Thank you again Mick. Kerry - Snells Beach

Many thanks for all the effort you put into selling our house at Snells Beach. We especially appreciated your goingCrescent, beyond Snells the call of duty and giving your free 3 Kauri Beach time to the builder, as a ‘builders labourer’ in order to get our bathroom ready for sale! You are certainly true to your word with your saying “there are never 3 Kauri Crescent, Snells Beach problems, only solutions!” We found you very easy and upfront to deal with and we would certainly without hesitation use your services again. Kind regards Helen & Barry - Snells Beach D

Real Estate Talk

Andrew Steens, Brand & Territory Owner, Mike Pero Real Estate andrew.steens@mikepero.com Like every other industry, technology is rapidly taking over in Real Estate, with advances in visual technology really proving its´ value in promoting properties to a wide audience. Photographs have been the main go-to technology and there is still nothing quite like well-chosen, high quality photographs to motivate a potential buyer to call. Walk-through video and 3D camera technology have become more affordable and are well worth investing in for high-end or unusual properties. A great example of this is a recent luxury property sale we concluded to an expat Kiwi. Without the walk-through video he could view online, it´s unlikely this sale would have gone through. Likewise, drone photography and drone video are ideal for showing the location of a property in relation to the coast, so important in this area! Some houses are awkward to photograph, due to the lie of the land or angle of the house; drones are superb at overcoming this issue. Numerous media are used to present all this visual information to potential buyers. Traditional paper advertising is waning but still important, particularly for unique properties with limited buyer numbers. Websites such as trademe, realestate, mikepero, juawei and hougarden are essential to reach the maximum number of potential viewers both here and overseas.

Pharmacy welcomes services of Robbie the robot He may not have arms and legs or a swiveling head, but Robbie the robot is still more than capable of doing his share of the pill dispensing work at the Unichem pharmacy in Manly Village. All his moving parts are on the inside, and they pack a punch – capable of dispensing 50 to 60 sachets of pills per minute. Robbie, weighing in at more than 300kg, was installed at the pharmacy on April 20. Unichem Manly owner Tania Adams says this type of automatic tablet dispensing and packaging system is the way of the future. At a cost of around $100,000, it’s a big investment for the pharmacy. Unichem Manly is the 60th pharmacy in NZ to have the system and Tania says only one other local chemist has one. She says it will make things a lot easier for patients who take pills regularly via packs. “I heard that it takes some people an hour every week to sort out their pills,” she says. What I’d like most for Mother’s Day

My mother didn’t like us to buy stuff for her on Mother’s Day, preferring a handmade card and a home cooked meal. I’m a bit the same and have many lovely cards from my daughter that I’ve saved over the years. She is now 17 and has grown into a beautiful, bright, energetic and caring young woman who can’t wait to get out and experience all that life has to offer. This may be her last year with us at home. So, what I would like most this Mother’s Day is to know that next Mother’s Day, wherever my daughter may be, we will still be able to share something special. Because you never stop being a mum. With this in mind, we asked a few local mums what they’d like most for Mother’s Day – and the answers were not all about breakfast in bed… Terry Moore, Editor Local mother of two, Mel Buckley has a few simple Mother’s Day requests of her nine-year-old son Jack and daughter Abby (7). “Please let me sleep in and wake up in my own time. As I despise crumbs in the bed please don’t bring me breakfast. A cuppa with homemade cards would be a perfect start to the day. Oh – I do like gifts as well! Then maybe a brunch and a family walk along the beach. Ideally there will be time for me to read my book. And then catch up with my mum and mother-in-law to celebrate their awesomeness in our life.”

Anglican priest Gendi Dwight has two teenage daughters, Danielle (16) and Caitlin (13). Tania Adams, pharmacist and owner of Unichem “What I’d like most is to send love and positive vibes Manly, has two children, Maria (12) and Adam (10). to all the people who find Mother’s Day difficult and “Mostly I would like for my kids to have healthy, happy, stressful. Breast Cancer Support operates Auckland-wide; the Hibiscus Coast group started in 1999 and is one of the longest running. Until recently the 40-strong group held its regular meetings at local cafés or in each other’s homes but they now have a new venue in Orewa which Jane hopes will encourage more women to join. Last year local real estate agent Rosalind Warren of Bayleys Orewa did some fundraising for the organisation. She became aware of the group’s need for a meeting space and offered the use of the company’s auction room at 14 Florence Avenue, Orewa. The first meeting will be held in the new venue on Tuesday, May 16 at 7pm. Meetings are open to any women who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer, at any time in their lives. Info: visit breastcancersupport.co.nz or phone 0800 273 222.

Jane Bissell of Arkles Bay says when she first turned up to a Breast Cancer Support meeting, 16 years ago, she found it comforting to talk “with someone who gets it”. Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, she was about to begin treatment. “At that first meeting I met someone who had been through the exact same chemo regime that I was about to have,” Jane says. “I was terrified about the process and she told me what to expect and offered tips to help me cope. So I started chemo feeling more confident and reassured in myself.” It is this personal perspective from breast cancer survivors that Jane says makes the Breast Cancer Support organisation (which she now works for as National Coordinator) especially valuable for women. “We are a peer support group – all the facilitators have had breast cancer themselves. Our meetings are a chance to share experiences in a supportive environment. We don’t give medical advice – it’s more about ways of coping. Guest speakers provide information on topics such as nutrition.” “One of the biggest things we deal with is fear and anxiety, especially worry about whether the cancer will come back,” Jane says. “That underlying anxiety can sit with women for a very long time. It takes a lot longer than people think, following treatment, to get back in balance and find your way forward physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.”

This month is Pink Ribbon Breakfast month. Registrations are open to anyone who would like to host a breakfast to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Foundation hopes to top last year’s total of over 3200 breakfasts across New Zealand, which were attended by 90,000 people and raised $1.7 million. Proceeds from this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will go towards research, with a focus on support for clinical trials, immunotherapies, preventing the spread of cancer, improving clinical practice and treatments for advanced breast cancer. Foundation chief executive Evangelia Henderson says the funds will help make up for the shortfall in dollars available for research. “We have top-notch researchers working in the hottest areas of cancer research, such as vaccines and immunotherapy, but often there’s simply not enough money to take their work forward to a stage where patients can benefit,” she says. Gulf Harbour principal has great expectations The newly appointed Principal of Gulf Harbour School, Mel Crosbie, says that the school is on a very positive trajectory with roll growth, a review of its core values underway and the introduction of its own sports teams. Mel is English and met her Kiwi husband Brian in the UK. They moved to NZ in 2015 when their daughters Sophia and Josie were seven and four years old respectively. “We wanted our kids to enjoy a Kiwi lifestyle,” Mel says. “We came with nothing and chose to live here because we remembered Orewa from a holiday. We were won over by the Coast.” Both children are now at Gulf Harbour School, where Mel initially took a job as Deputy Principal. She became Acting Principal last year when John Petrie left and was appointed Principal on April 6. She says although her time as Principal of a Primary school in Manchester was valuable experience for the role, taking the reins at Gulf Harbour School has been a steep learning curve, largely because of differences in the curriculum. “I’m not afraid to put up my hand and ask if I don’t know something,” Mel says. “There is a supportive team here, which includes 16 relatively new staff members, and we’re learning together.” Next year the school will celebrate its 20th anniversary and with that in mind “a face lift” is taking place. This includes a review of the school’s values – a process that is being guided by talking with the school community about the changes they’d like to see and what attributes they’d like their children to leave school with. Mel says ‘high expectations’ is a key phrase that is coming through in many ways. She says it started “at grass roots level” with teaching the children about wearing their uniform with pride; each class is also discussing and setting expected standards. Mel says this process has been led by students as well as teachers and is

“working brilliantly”. It’s an attitude that can now be taken into the sports arena. Sport Gulf Harbour, which had run the school’s sports, has disbanded and Mel says staff and parents are stepping up to fill the vacuum and ensure the children can participate in a range of sports. Ruth Taylor has been appointed sports leader and more than 300 children have signed up for netball, basketball, rugby, flipperball and hockey teams. For the first time, a school team of 68 took part in the recent Weet-bix TRYathlon. “The children and the community wants this, and we are excited to be able to demonstrate ‘the GHS way’ on the sports field.” In addition, there is the ongoing challenge of fundraising towards a much-needed school hall. The project is anticipated to cost more than $1 million, around half of which will be raised by the school and community. So far a floor plan and site for the building have been prepared and $400,000 raised. Mel says as a mum, she knows that the move to NZ has been the right one. “I love seeing my kids taking their shoes off, splashing in puddles, getting grubby and running around,” she says. “In the UK there is a ‘claim culture’ that means that a lot of outdoor activities are not allowed because of the fear of accidents. Over here it’s more about being sensible, but seeing the potential that the outdoors has for learning as well as having fun.”

SOPHIE BEFORE

SOPHIE AFTER

SOPHIE’S SMILE MAKEOVER Sophie Turgoose’s life has changed forever. Once hiding her badly damaged teeth from even her own family, Sophie now embraces every day with enthusiasm and a new confidence. As the winner of More FM Rodney’s Fix My Smile competition, Sophie now has a perfect set of pearly whites thanks to a combination of stateof-the-art dental implants and complete dentures, all placed by Dr Dusan Kuzmanovic and Dr Sonya Wallis of The Dental Suite in Silverdale. “She is a genuinely nice person and I’m really glad we were able to help her,” says Dusan of Sophie. Having had bad experiences with dentists in the past, Sophie was initially nervous about the dental work awaiting her. “They would judge me and growl at me about my teeth,” Sophie says of previous dentists. However, Dusan and the Dental Suite team made her feel comfortable immediately. “They totally had my trust and treated me like a person,” she says. “They didn’t make me feel bad. The only way to describe it is that they treated me like my family. Like my closest friends.” Initially entered into the competition by her daughter Angela in 2016, Sophie was lucky enough to have her treatment completed and revealed at The Dental Suite surgery by the More FM Rodney team on the 1st of March this year, only one day before Angela’s wedding. For a woman who had no photographs of herself with her adult children, the reveal was timed perfectly and produced poignant results. “I’m not a very emotional person, but I just burst into tears,” Sophie says. With a new smile, Sophie now faces the world with aplomb. No longer hiding her mouth behind her hand, she is enthusiastic, open and cheerful. “Now I can talk to people. I’m getting used to smiling openly. There is not enough I could say about how much Dusan and the team have changed my life.”

I’m a woman working in the tech world – something I take for granted in many ways. I was lucky that I had a father interested in tech, who believed I could do anything. However, I wonder what it is like for young females looking to work in tech these days. I presume it’s better than when I was at school, before the internet even, when I was told to take shorthand and typing. It turned out that both of those proved handy for my career in journalism and digital media. When I looked at the subject online I found a thread on the Women in Innovation Summit via a National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women, (via the Ministry of Women). All of which I didn’t know existed!
It turns out that New Zealand needs to recruit and train more women in innovative, in-demand industries such as engineering, ICT, software development and computer science. Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects are critical to innovation. It seems that in both primary and secondary schools there is an even split of genders studying science except that, at secondary level, girls are more likely to choose biology and boys physics and calculus. At tertiary level, women make up 64 percent of Bachelor of Science enrolments. However, they are over-represented in the health sciences and under-represented in engineering and technology. Women make up less than a quarter of those studying for a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and just over a third of those studying for a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. They make up only 13 percent of engineers and seven percent of chartered professional engineers. So why does it matter? One reason given by Xero chief executive Rod Drury was that ideally the gender balance of a company should reflect its customer base. Given that women make 80 percent of all household technology purchases, more women employed in the design and development process could help companies meet their customers’ needs. Today there are more role models and women leaders to speak out with confidence about their success in tech, including Nanogirl (aka Dr Michelle Dickinson) youtube.com/watch?v=9jV-KW1jpJo and Lillian Grace, founder of Wiki NZ tedxauckland.com/speakers/lillian-grace/ See more related links and videos with this digital column at localmatters.co.nz

Fast furious feijoas

Tree felling causes anger

The removal of five mature liquidambar trees from the front of Whangaparaoa Primary School during the school holidays, on April 18, resulted in a number of distressed calls to Hibiscus Matters as the chainsaws roared in the background. The school apparently removed the The trees were on the Ladies Mile trees fearing health and safety issues side of the school and many people from falling limbs. A Tradies themed mufti day to raise funds for Love Soup Hibiscus Coast was organised at Whangaparaoa College by the school’s prefects last month. As a result, the college was able to donate a total of $600 to the organisation, which provides a free meal and food rescue service.

The eagerly anticipated feijoa season is always fast and furious. They first appear on our trees in late March. In April they’re falling all over the pavement and your back lawn, and by now, many of us are sick of the sight of them. Then it’s over for the rest of the year with not a feijoa to be found until the following March. There are many different things you can do with your feijoas to preserve them so you can enjoy their unique taste all year long. The easiest option is to stew them and then either bottle or freeze them. Stewed feijoas make the perfect topping for porridge and a welcome addition to any crumble. If you have more time, try turning them into a paste or jam (recipe on the Love Food Hate Waste website). Similar to quince paste, feijoa paste can either be eaten as a sweet or as an accompaniment to cheese. Once you’ve scooped out the flesh you will be left with a mountain of feijoa skins. Don’t throw them in the compost bin just yet – they’re perfect for flavouring cordial. This simple recipe makes a litre of feijoa cordial. Feijoa Cordial Ingredients: 12-14 feijoa skins 1 litre water Juice of 1 lemon 1 teaspoon tartaric acid 600 grams sugar Method: To prepare the feijoa skins you can either grate them using a grater, zest them using a lemon peeler, or if you like their earthy taste, you can use the whole skin. Put the water and lemon juice into a large pot. Add the feijoa skins, tartaric acid and sugar. Stir to combine. Bring to the boil, simmer until sugar has dissolved (about five minutes). Strain the cordial through a fine sieve. Leave to cool then pour into sterile bottles. The cordial will last for up to two months.

I would like to tell you about a special woman called Eunice Eichler. She died in March, without much fanfare, as she lived. But to me she was a pioneer and a hero. Major Eichler was the matron of Bethany Home in Grey Lynn, and she was involved in the adoptions of both of our children. For the last few decades, out-of-family adoption has been declining rapidly in New Zealand – from about 2000 per year in the 1960s to just 21 in the whole of 2012. Even in 1986, when we found out we couldn’t have children, we understood that we would be lucky to adopt. But we went through the nervewracking process of proving that we were suitable. I remember my wife tidying up the drawers in our bedroom before our visit by the social worker. Funny how your mind works, as if they would be basing their decision on how precisely my socks were arranged! Subsequently we moved to Auckland and registered with Bethany, a Salvation Army home for single mothers which operated for nearly 100 years until its closure in 2011. There we met a group of young women who were being cared for, trained, supported, loved and encouraged. Sadly, the public view of adoption, of late, has been dominated by stories of brutal estrangement, secrecy and heartache. Nobody can doubt the pain associated with those old-fashioned practices. I have seen the impact decades later. All I can say is at Bethany we experienced just the opposite. The mothers were non-judgementally supported in their decision making. If they chose adoption, the files of prospective parents were carefully vetted for compatibility, and then the mother herself selected who her baby would go to. In 1988 and 1989 two brave young women chose us. At that stage we moved into Bethany and shared care of the child for a few days. This was an incredibly tender and heartfelt process. At all times the mothers’ sole concern was what was best for their baby. So our children have grown up with complete knowledge and an ongoing relationship with their birth parents and extended families. When I took our son as a pre-schooler to visit all his birth rellies, he left with the statement, “There’s a lot of people who love me, eh?” Like everybody we’ve had our ups and downs, but in our house we have a saying: “We haven’t got a chromosome in common, but we made a family.”

Half Marathon takes big strides on Orewa Beach It was standing room only on Orewa Reserve as awards were handed out in the Orewa Beach Half Marathon. More than 1600 people took part, which organiser Rob Docherty of Running Events says made it his organisation’s biggest ever. It is one of the five biggest timed running events in Auckland. The event took place in good weather on April 23 – Rob says the only issue raised was the effort it took to run into the wind for the final 3km down the beach. The majority (around 1000) took part in the 21km half marathon, with 575 in the 10km, 225 in the 5km and more than 100 in the 2km Kids’ Dash. The large numbers heading around the course, which included the beach, Eave’s Bush and Te Ara Tahuna (Orewa Estuary walkway) was a spectacular sight. The first person home in the half marathon was Chris Trent in a time of 1:18:13, and second was Lewis Wright (both from the North Shore). Both were in the 20-29 age bracket but hard on their heels, in a time of 1:20:26, was Gene Rand of Albany who often trains at Millwater and was in the 40– 49 category. First woman home was Katherine Morgan (1:28:41) who came 19th overall and won the Women 30–39 category. Local board member and fire fighter Mike Williamson did the half

marathon in 1:30:17. This gave him seventh place in the 40-49 age category and 26th overall. The 10km race was a comeback for experienced Stanmore Bay runner Brad Luiten, who has been sidelined for three months due to injury. He won it (and remained pain free) in a time of 36:58. Brad was only able to do light training for four weeks prior to the event. “Even though my time was four minutes off my PB, I was very happy to be running hard again,” he says. Around 80 helpers were provided by the No. 5 (Rodney) Squadron Branch of the Air Training Corps, based at Silverdale, who gave a lot of positive encouragement to those taking part.

The Orewa Beach run – windy, but scenic.

Among the youngest Half Marathon runners were locals Fairlane Selwyn (right) and Sera Bickers. Sera came fifth out of eight runners in the U19 category and Fairlane came 7th.

Trap technology Animal pest control has burgeoned on the Hibiscus Coast in recent years. Inspired by the sanctuary at Shakespear, the local Forest & Bird and others have sought to support that project and, as much as possible, bring the same benefits for native wildlife, to the rest of the Coast. More than 750 traps and bait stations are being monitored. Many hands make light work. As people from all sorts of backgrounds have set their minds to the task, methods are being improved and innovative ideas bear fruit. What works and what doesn’t – that is the question. The basic principles are to kill humanely, to use methods that are effective and affordable, and to measure results. The tried and true method to kill possums is the ground-placed Timms trap. It’s hard to beat. Each user has their favourite fruit or vegetable to use as a lure. Challenging the Timms are automatic re-set traps, powered by a gas canister. They are expensive, but the idea is great, as refreshing the lure monthly is the only task required until the gas canister runs out. The carcass falls out of the trap and will break down or be scavenged by predators between visits if you are lucky. One technical advance can be challenged by another though. Newly affordable video cameras can be set up opposite a trap to monitor animal responses. Remote downloading of the video file can follow. Our results have shown that the lure for the auto-trap, in the form of a paste, can be licked off the trigger by a possum without setting off the trap. (To see for yourself, visit pestfree.wixsite. com/volunteers) The Timms has not been knocked off its perch as the number one possum killer just yet. Rats are being targeted in Hibiscus Coast projects primarily by poisoned cerealbased baits containing Bromadiolone. The bait is encased in small plastic boxes with rat-sized entry holes (referred to as sidekicks in reference to these entry points). These can be safely distributed widely as a key is required to open them. The bait is in the form of blocks placed on fixed spikes. This encourages the rat to eat a lethal dose rather than carry it back to a den for storage, as it might prefer. Sidekicks are easy to service as the rats go elsewhere to die. They can get messy if snails, beetles or other insects find their way in: they can eat the bait and don’t seem to be poisoned by it. A modification is to place the sidekick on stilts – nails or bolts – to make it difficult for these critters to enter, while it is still easy for a rat. Stoats are difficult to deal with as they require an animal-based lure and have large territories, making the chances of one investigating a particular trap low. One consolation is that their taste for meat will lead them to devour the carcasses of poisoned rats, resulting one hopes in them receiving secondary poisoning. The standard stoat trap is a DoC 200, a substantial steel trap placed in a stout wooden box with mesh ends. An egg is the attractant, which the creature never reaches as stepping on the plate between it and the egg sets of the trap. As with the Timms, lots of other attractants can be placed to entice entry. One clever idea is to place some grass and twigs around the egg to mimic a bird’s nest. In practice these traps often catch rats or hedgehogs (which are also pests). There is nothing like sharing each other’s experiences, as pest control is as much an art as a science. Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird received a donation of timber from Northpine that will help it make progress with its Pest Free Peninsula project. The timber donated by the Silverdale based company is being used to build boxes that will house DOC 200 traps. These are placed on the lines targeting rats on Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Masters do Coast proud

Fishing

Locals taking part in the World Masters Games are having fun and bringing home the medals. Here is a selection of the ones that Hibiscus Matters heard from last week.

with Damian Clayton whangaparaoa@topcatch.co.nz

Fishing from higher ground

The North Western Allies rugby team (30s age category) won all its games, some by massive margins, to make it into the finals. Pictured are three team members, from left, Rhys Finn of Stanmore Bay, Tavita Faamausili and Ken Wilson (both of Arkles Bay).

Gavin Clark of Stanmore Bay could well develop neck strain, such is the weight of the medals he won with his team in Outrigger Canoe/Waka Ama paddling. Gavin competed in the 50s age category as part of Team Phoenix. The team won three gold medals, in various 500m races as well as two silvers (1000m and 500m) and a bronze in the Men’s Marathon.

We’ve had our fair share of wind and rain lately which can make it difficult to get out in the boat. Especially in a small boat! When the weather windows have allowed there have been some really good catches from the 50m area east of Flat Rock and likewise from around Little Barrier and Channel Island as you’d expect for this time of year. The frustration sets in though when you can’t get all your ducks in a row what with work, weather conditions and time! Never fear though, as we are very lucky to have some great land based fishing right on our doorstep and not only that, we have the shelter of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula so there is always somewhere to have the wind at your back. Many of us “cut our teeth” and had our first fishing experiences off the beach, rocks or wharf before progressing to boat fishing. When I was growing up in the area we fished the rocky points, beaches and river mouths nearly every weekend and on many evenings during the summer. In winter we relished the shorter days and overcast conditions, which disguised our baits. Recently the rock fishing has improved a great deal as the fish have been in closer feeding on the large anchovy schools and shellfish as they try to put on condition for the cooler months. Land based anglers have been using a couple of different methods with success lately. The first and probably most critical is using the low light conditions of dawn and dusk (and even into the dark) as these are primary and instinctive feeding times for our inshore species. Using oily, tough baits like mullet, bonito and salted pilchards is another thing to try, to avoid the “pickers” nibbling away at your offerings. Baits like bonito belly flap and sanmar are great too, especially when wrapped in a few winds of bait cotton or bait elastic to secure the bait to the hook. Live bait sliders have accounted for some nice kingfish, big kahawai and john dory from the rocks and beaches over the past month or so. These simple clips allow an angler to slide a live mackerel, sprat or small kahawai down to the swivel above a sinker. The design permits the clip to only slide down and not back up the line and presents the bait attractively for the predator fish. Live baits can also be suspended under a balloon and this practice presents the live bait out from the rock ledge at the desired distance to restrict it being snagged in the weedline. Beach fishing on a rising tide in the evening can be very productive if you don’t mind putting in the effort and wrapping up warm. As with fishing from rocks, there is always something for the kids to do – be it building a sandcastle, hunting for crabs and exploring rock pools or even nabbing a kahawai for the smoker off the beach. Land based fishing can be affordable and accessible to get into and great fun at whatever level you take it to – and we have it all, here on our beautiful coast.

Hibiscus Matters’ graphic designer, Lorry McCarthy took part with her hockey team the Hibiscus Hawks, below. She described her time at the masters games, as exhausting but fun. The team played a total of six games.

A converted try was the only score when Orewa College First XV beat Mahurangi College First XV 7–0 in the annual Murray Jones Shield clash held at Orewa College on April 11. Mahurangi First XV assistant coach Jon Blyth says nothing could set the two sides apart for the majority of the game with a half time score of 0–0. “It was going to come down to which team made a crucial mistake and we missed an important tackle,” he says. Orewa First XV head coach Adam Wilson says the visitors were stronger early on with good turnover ball from the breakdown. “We turned momentum around in the second half despite being a man short after a yellow card,” Adam says. Jon says Mahurangi probably had more opportunities overall, but rushed things too much and subsequently couldn’t execute the final blow on numerous occasions. Early in the game, Mahurangi had a penalty, but captain Jacob Bindon opted to kick for touch before losing the lineout. “I’m glad he made that decision. He wanted to make a statement early on,

but Orewa dominated the lineouts so that’s something we definitely need to work on.” Adam is working with a relatively new squad with a focus on team handling skills and culture. “We want every player to have the ability to be an option on attack and help out at the ruck where Mahurangi got the better of us. We’ve also tried to build a better relationship between our first and second team by having combined trainings this year.” Orewa also enjoyed a win in their first pre-season match beating One Tree Hill 33-21.

Misty landed at Snowplanet Seventeen-year-old skier Ryan Pinder has a list of tricks up his sleeve – all of which he hopes to land at Snowplanet, where he works. On April 8 he went into Snowplanet’s record books when he landed a Misty 720 on his first attempt during a Slope Style, Free Style Ski competition. It is the first time this trick has been landed at Snowplanet. In the process, Ryan won the Open Men’s category. The trick is described as a front flip performed while spinning 720°. Ryan did the move off a nine-metre jump.

Community honours veterans at ANZAC parade A whistle blast marked the start of the 11am ANZAC Parade held at the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA in Whangaparaoa. The sound was chosen because it was the signal given to soldiers in the trenches of WW1 to go “over the top” and into battle. The parade, on April 25, is one of the largest in the area with hundreds of people watching the march past of veterans and current members of the armed forces. Young people swelled the ranks, with readings given by Whangaparaoa College students and many local schools also laying wreaths. In his first official duty as Minister of Defence, Rodney MP Mark Mitchell had laid a wreath at the cenotaph during the dawn service. The service included prayers, the singing of the Australian and NZ national anthems, and the lowering of the flag as The Last Post was played by bugler Kerry Robertson. For more photos, visit www.localmatters.co.nz

Above, The 11am ANZAC Parade at Hibiscus Coast Community RSA is one of the largest on the Coast. Below, Veterans from WWII headed this year’s parade.

The Orewa Sea Scouts were among many young people who laid wreaths. Wreaths were laid by representatives of the armed forces, services such as Police, Fire and St John, Auckland Council as well as schools, community groups, individual families and the NZ Prisoners of War.

Lieutenant Sarah Campbell “switched codes”, leaving the Airforce 12 years ago to join the Navy. With her was son James CampbellHawes, wearing his great grandfather’s WW1 medals. The No. 5 (Rodney) Squadron Branch of the NZ Air Training Corps stood guard at the cenotaph.
