Family insights into America’s Cup success

America’s Cup racing was keenly watched in many homes on the Hibiscus Coast – but the interest was perhaps most intense in the home of Team New Zealand sailor Andy Maloney’s parents, in Arkles Bay. Andy’s mother, Loretta, is a relieving teacher at two Whangaparaoa schools and followed her son’s progress by watching the races live on TV with friends in Arkles Bay as well as at Murray’s Bay Sailing Club and, for the last few races, at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron. As she watched, friends in

Bermuda sent her texts and photos to capture some of the atmosphere. The family lives and breathes sailing and Andy, now 27, grew up on his parents’ 44ft yacht in Kerikeri. His first boat was an Optimist, which was kept on board. His father Jim gave sailing lessons to the local children, and is now a professional coach. Jim was in Europe during the America’s Cup and had to watch the final race in an airport in Germany. “I almost missed the plane, holding on to see them get over the line,” he says. Andy’s sister Alex is a champion

sailor and won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics. Older brother Jimmy, also a keen sailor, is a police officer in Queenstown. The whole family hopes to come together to celebrate when the victorious team returns this week with the Cup. Loretta and Jim say it was amazing to see how calm and confident the whole team was, right from the start. “They left NZ with a quiet confidence, and built on that,” Jim says. “They are a young crew, but very experienced competitive sailors who thrive on the

pressure of close racing.” Loretta says that the team members grew up sailing against each other, which created a real respect and trust. “They are mates,” she says. “They’ve sailed since they were 10, 11 or 12 years old, saw each other every weekend at regattas, and later trained together for competitions such as the Youth America’s Cup.” They were mentored along the way by sailors such as Team NZ skipper Glenn Ashby. Jim says one reason the team was able to change to the cyclors was bringing in young guys who weren’t traditional grinders. Andy was one of the cyclors, and helped trim the foils with Blair Tuke during turning manoeuvres. Jim says along with the skill of helmsman Peter Burling, the cycling system was one of the keys to the team’s success. “It allowed four people to sail the catamaran, rather than two on competing boats, because the cyclors’ hands were free,” he says. And was Loretta just a little disappointed that the team threw the Louis Vuitton sports bags, the contents of which are worth around $3000, into the crowd? “It was a lovely and very Kiwi gesture,” she says. “But I think Andy’s fiancée Kirsten would have liked that bag.” Andy says he is “super excited” to

Hedgehog rescue talk turns prickly

A presentation by NZ Hedgehog rescue volunteer Lesley Wheatley last week turned into a dispute between conservationists and those who care for hedgehogs. The talk, at Orewa Library on June 30, was to filling boxes that have slowly taken over the educate people about hedgehogs in the hope of Wheatley’s shearing shed. attracting more volunteer carers locally. The thought of hedgehogs being rescued makes Caring for sick or injured hedgehogs – including Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird member Pauline those that lose spines from mange mite – and Smith very angry. Lesley Wheatley’s hedgehogs, with and without prickles, were guests at Orewa Library recently. But not everyone was pleased to see them.

Conservationists seek cat-free covenants on Hibiscus Coast As residential developments press closer to native bush reserves, cat predation is increasingly an issue, leading to bans on cat ownership in some areas. The proposed Grand View Estate of 575 homes is adjacent to DOC’s Nukumea Scenic Reserve, a major habitat for the at-risk, ground nesting fern bird. The resource consent application for the development is currently before independent commissioners and is staunchly opposed by Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird, who brought in Dr Margaret Stanley as expert witness in support of cat-free conditions. Commissioners have come to a preliminary view that the native fauna of Nukumea Reserve would

benefit from a cat ban and requested the developer, Orewa West Investments, to provide an example of such a condition. They won’t have far to look – Sunny Heights development, off West Hoe Heights in Orewa, also around 570 homes, has placed a cat-free covenant on a portion of its site, which will be on the title of those properties. Auckland Council compliance officers can issue infringement notices to anyone acting contrary to a consent notice. Sunny Heights includes QEII covenanted bush and is close to Eaves Bush Scenic Reserve and 10ha deemed a Significant Ecological Area (SEA).

WE HAVE MOVED!!! 3 DOORS DOWN...

A spokesperson for Sunny Heights developer Changda International says that the ban is to support the work Changda is doing in the SEA, which includes removing weed species, pest control and expansion of the area with over 1ha of additional native bush and stream restoration planting. The Weiti Bay development in Stillwater has also placed a prohibition on cat ownership over all lot owners, which developer Evan Williams says will be policed by the body corporate, with owners also having a direct obligation to Council. “The hole in the system, so to speak, is that the cat populations around Weiti are uncontrolled,” Mr Williams says.

Feedback

Business focus

I wish to respond to the Viewpoint column by Councillor Wayne Walker (HM June 14). As a long time resident of Silverdale and formerly the President of the Silverdale Business Association for seven years, I am concerned that Cr Walker does not understand the full story of the lights issue at Silverdale. The lights at the Silverdale Street / Hibiscus Coast Highway/Tavern Road intersection were on the long term plan from the former Rodney Council in 1976. Since then sets of lights have been installed, with none of these helping the Business Park in any way. There are at least 320 Businesses in the Park with about 3000 workers, so not everyone wants to go to the Auckland CBD to work. What is even more important is that trucks issued with special heavy weight permits from NZTA are obliged to turn into Tavern Road from the highway. Using another way can allow them to have their permit taken from them, plus they may receive a hefty fine. Cr Walker is in favour of connecting to Curley Ave and while this is a good idea if a developer pays for the bridge, it in no way helps the Business Park. Already companies are talking about relocating from the Business Park due to the problems of entry and exit. It can take 40 minutes to get from Manga Road to Red Beach! The biggest employment area for the Hibiscus Coast is at the Business Park, so their needs need to be recognised. Lights are a priority at the intersection, as shown on the NZTA signs before the Weiti Bridge. Lorraine Sampson, Silverdale (abridged)

Lights facilitate flow Viewpoint by Cr Wayne Walker (HM June 14) misses the main points the Silverdale Area Business Association (SABA) determined essential for adding traffic lights at the intersection of Hibiscus Coast Highway and Tavern Road. Interconnectivity with the Business Park (around 320

What’s on your mind? Readers are welcome to air their views. Letters may be abridged or withheld. See address on p2 or e: terry@localmatters.co.nz businesses employing around 3000 people) is vital for the lifeforce of the local economy. The existing lights at East Coast Road will come under more pressure, as not only do most employees approach it from the Business Park every afternoon, but much more traffic will attack it from Millwater and Curley Ave once this connection goes through. This will create huge delays at this set of lights. This connection also does nothing of significance for the heavy vehicles or the employees accessing in and out of the Business Park on the other side. SABA believes that new traffic lights can easily be coordinated with existing ones to facilitate traffic flow. When traffic is stopped on the highway at East Coast Road to allow cross-flow, then the new Silverdale lights could act as a vent by allowing cross-flow in conjunction. Traffic on the highway could move through both sets when on green phase. They can be programmed to accommodate peak flow times. It would certainly improve business throughout Silverdale, eliminate much of the traffic having to detour to the Whangaparaoa lights to go south plus the dangerous U-turns being performed currently at Titan Place and on the highway. Local heavy truck companies were consulted some time ago and they can see no problems with stopping or starting from lights on the existing flat area. Traffic lights here would greatly facilitate their movements. They are placed at the bottom of hills all over the world. Silverdale is developing rapidly and SABA considers a speed reduction to 60kph, as on Whangaparaoa Road, is now urgent. This, along with signalisation, would improve safety and commuters would soon adjust. Penlink, the Curley Ave extension, and new lights at Silverdale are all vital to enhance growth and employment in the area. Graham Johnson, SABA (abridged)

Support for lights In last year’s election campaign I was 100 percent behind fixing the intersection of Silverdale Street with the Hibiscus Coast Highway. Locals have been calling for years to alleviate the “divorce” that was forced on Silverdale between the business park and the village side of the road. During that campaign I became aware of tireless work over many years by the Silverdale Area Business Association in working with AT to achieve this. I was absolutely delighted to read of the AT decision to review the situation formally with a view to better roading in the area. I encourage the People and Penlink team on our Local Board to realise that this is what the people want to help Silverdale realise its ambitions as an easy place to visit. You’re there for the people, as your campaign slogan said, and this, along with Penlink, is what they want. With this having been on the cards since 1976, maybe Penlink, planned since 1961, is next? John Davies, Stillwater

Steve says thanks I would like to thank everyone for their support and especially like to thank Neuro Rehab Results. Inspiring story While a lot of doom and gloom is spread about the future of newspapers generally, it’s obvious that yours is thriving. To me, the reason is stories like the one on Steve Caines and the amazing ReWalk in the last issue (June 14). I would never have known that there are inspirational people like him in our community if I hadn’t read it there. Keep up the excellent work – we love your paper. Greg Campbell, Gulf Harbour

Not a fan

Mayor Phil Goff gave his views on American president Donald Trump in no uncertain terms in a recent interview with Local Matters. This came up again later when he spoke to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board. Mr Goff said that APEC is coming to Auckland in 2021, which will bring the leaders of countries such as Canada, the USA, Russia and Thailand here. “I hope at least two of those presidents will have changed by then,” he said.

False alarm

Last week our editor was speaking with Rodney Councillor Greg Sayers, as a fire alarm sounded and the Council offices in the city were evacuated. “Hope the cladding is ok,” Greg said with a slightly nervous laugh. It proved to be a false alarm.

Hope fostered A huge thankyou to Rotary Satellite Club of Orewa-Millwater, who presented Foster Hope with a cheque for $1750 at their recent Quiz Night. This generous gift is so appreciated and will contribute to support our children in foster care. Foster Hope is currently running its annual Pyjama Drive, and to date Hibiscus Coast schools have donated over 120 pairs of new pyjamas, which will be distributed to local agencies to give to foster children in the area. There are over 5000 children in foster care in New Zealand. We, at Foster Hope, believe it’s important that these children know that they’re not alone and that somebody cares about them. Clare Thompson, Hibiscus Coast coordinator, Foster Hope (abridged)

Compromise needed As a person who drives along Hibiscus Coast Highway every weekday, heading to and from work on the North Shore, I was stunned by the plan to slow traffic in and around the Silverdale intersection (HM June 1). I agree with the councillors that this

You don’t have to be a traffic engineer to work out that although this is no longer a state highway, it has similar volumes of traffic in rush hour – which Orewa does not. I hope common sense will prevail and some safe compromise can be reached. Reg Lewis, Red Beach

Dynamic lanes safe? Today, in our mailbox, we received information about the Dynamic Lane Controls Trial proposed for Whangaparaoa Rd. There are a few concerns we would like to raise. This follows up on concerns we raised last year in a letter to Hibiscus Matters when the proposal was first made public, a copy of which was received by Auckland Transport. Some of our safety concerns are not covered by AT’s information pack. Surely residents’ safety must be paramount, but that seems to be overshadowed by the need to get this trial underway. Some of our concerns: Turning right from our driveway into Whangaparaoa Rd. We will need to cross two oncoming lanes and then merge into a single lane. What a nightmare; turning right from Whangaparaoa Rd into our driveway, we will hold up traffic on the inside dynamic lane until we are able to turn; pedestrians, including children, crossing Whangaparaoa Rd. The flush median is a safe haven, but with that gone there will be three lanes of traffic to cross; emergency vehicles use the flush median but with that gone how will they cope? Last week, on one afternoon at peak time, there were at least four emergency vehicles using this lane in both directions; there’s a hospital, medical centre and retirement village, plus a side road to Hospice. Access in and out of these facilities, especially in an emergency, is bound to be compromised. We are not against the trial, but surely before

construction starts, more time needs to be spent looking at safety? There is a ‘meet the project team’ session on Saturday, July 8 – why only one session? We would like to attend this but we work on Saturdays. We realise it is difficult to cater for everyone, but surely there should be at least one evening meeting? We understood there was to be consultation before the trial. To date no one from AT has consulted us, nor any neighbours we have spoken to. Maybe the information in our letterbox is deemed to be consultation, coupled with the planned meeting – but hasn’t the horse already bolted? Finally, is the dynamic lane change really going to be worth it? Surely with no increase of traffic flow access onto the motorway, or beyond Vipond Road, the same bottlenecks will be present, albeit possibly in a different place. Roy Forster and Nigel Thomas, Whangaparaoa (abridged)

Correction

Suzie Mudge of Neuro Rehab Results was incorrectly quoted in our front page story, June 14 about Steve Caines. The quote should have read: She says the unit would benefit many New Zealanders unable to walk as a consequence of injury or illness. “It enables people who don’t have movement in their legs to stand and walk. The ReWalk has a stair climbing function that helps people negotiate curbs and stairs, so they can use it to walk in the community and other places that are difficult to access in a wheelchair.” We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Have your say on Whangaparaoa Rd dynamic lanes

Auckland Transport plans to begin work on Whangaparaoa Rd next month to prepare it for the trial of a traffic control system called Dynamic Lanes – and residents are invited to a public meeting this weekend to air their concerns. Construction on the road between Red Beach Road and the highway is expected to take around five months, with the trial itself to start early next year. The cost of the project is $2.5 million. Commuters who remember the widening of Whangaparaoa Rd (from Red Beach Rd to Vipond Rd) in 2005 will have their hearts in their mouths. That project took seven months and saw travel times as much as tripling in the rush hour. Traffic volumes have increased significantly since then. However, although there are no specific details of the works available until a contractor is appointed, Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson James Ireland says “the construction of this project is likely to be significantly less disruptive than for a traditional roadwidening”. He says AT and its contractor will work with the community in the lead up to the trial to minimise any inconvenience. “Local residents and businesses will be notified of construction details and traffic management plans well in advance of any physical work,” Mr Ireland says. AT will seek to address residents’ concerns at a Meet the Project Team

Work is about to begin on Whangaparaoa Rd’s long awaited Dynamic Lane trial and Auckland Transport is seeking to address residents’ concerns at a public meeting.

session to be held this weekend, on Saturday, July 8, at the Red Beach School Hall from 9.30am–11.30am. It is a public meeting and anyone may attend. The trial will use gantries and LED lights to change the road configuration, creating an additional lane in the direction of main traffic flow in peak hours. AT has been investigating dynamic lanes on road corridors since August 2014 and was originally expected to start the Whangaparaoa trial last year. The system is relatively quick to build and cost effective compared to road widening (the cost of widening this section of Whangaparaoa Rd to four lanes was estimated at $20 million in 2011). AT network management and safety manager Randhir Karma says that the installation of dynamic lane controls along Whangaparaoa Rd would also require relatively low use of surrounding road reserve land, which will minimise disruption to residents. Similar systems operate on Panmure Bridge and Auckland Harbour Bridge, but this is the first time it has been trialled in a residential area. “The outcome of this trial will be used to determine the suitability of dynamic lane controls for this section of Whangaparaoa Rd as a permanent feature as well as its suitability in other parts of Auckland,” Mr Karma says. Viewpoint with Cr John Watson john.watson@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Finding Robbie Back in the 1960s and 70s Sir Dove-Myer Robinson was Auckland’s longest serving and most popular Mayor. He had a hard life as a child before making his mark as a successful clothing manufacturer. He was a man with the common touch, a rather eccentric individual who well into his 70s used to walk bare chested to work during the middle of winter. Today he is remembered for his heroic exploits in stopping plans to pump sewerage out into the Waitemata Harbour and for his vison in promoting a rapid rail network for the Auckland metropolitan region. What isn’t so well known about ‘Robbie’ were his constant battles with bureaucrats, obstructive local politicians and with successive governments, all of whom were keen to thwart his visionary plans. They knew that the antiAuckland sentiment prevalent elsewhere in the country combined with a lack of political unity, meant that it was easy to ignore Robbie’s desperate pleas for action. Some things don’t change. That’s not to say nothing’s happening at the moment. There is – next year sees a $700 million NZTA project widening the motorway and extending the busway from Greville Road to Constellation Drive. And a few years ago who would have ever imagined fleets of brand new double deckers pouring up the Northern Motorway to the soon to be constructed Silverdale Park and Ride transit station? Or a Gulf Harbour ferry service transformed from a few trips to 18 sailings a day and with more to come? Things are happening in this Ward and elsewhere, but these and other projects are simply not enough to cope with the massive explosion in Auckland’s population, exceeding as it does all previous predictions. This means current plans and construction timetables are too limited and definitely too slow to address the tsunami of people pouring into each and every corner of Auckland witness the continued prevarication over Penlink. While Robbie had a clear view of what had to happen with our transport network he also exhibited an equal concern for the environment and for the people who lived here. We’re fortunate on the Coast to enjoy the regional parks also provided in the 1960s as well as wonderful new assets like Metro Park in Millwater. That’s not necessarily the same for other parts of Auckland, where open space is increasingly compromised as more and more houses, most of them expensive and beyond the reach of first home buyers, are crammed on to every spare scrap of land. In reality the current challenges are far beyond any council – ‘super’ or otherwise. Over $7 billion in debt, the council’s credit card is maxed out to the limit meaning it can’t actually borrow any more. What’s required is a massive public works programme similar to that which the Ministry of Works undertook across NZ in the 1960s and 70s. What’s also needed is another ‘Robbie’ to work with the council. This 2017 ‘Robbie’, however, can only come from one of the major political parties currently in parliament. Let’s hope for Auckland’s sake that such a person exists.

A plan to plant the land surrounding Te Herenga Waka o Orewa marae, in Silverdale’s Industrial area, by the Weiti River, includes removal of some eucalyptus trees and eventually creating an orchard of feijoa, apples, peaches and nectarine trees and a “medicinal forest” (ngahere rongoa) as well as native plantings by the river. Volunteers began planting on June 16. A team made up largely of Auckland Council staff, enjoying their annual “paid community day”, got dozens of plants in the ground, as well as learning a little about the medicinal uses of some native species. The plants were donated by Council and local organisations. Donna Tawhara of Auckland Council, foreground, was one of around 15 Council employees who swapped their desks for a day planting at the local marae.

Bike rack still in pipeline A bike rack requested for Gulf Harbour Reserve, by the ferry terminal, in February last year (HM May 3) has been added to Auckland Transport’s 2017/18 cycle parking programme, which is “currently under development”. The focus of the programme is installing cycle racks at town centres, public transport and community facilities in the road reserve. Auckland Transport (AT) hopes to implement the programme this year. However, all projects are ranked in order of priority and it will depend where the Gulf Harbour bike rack sits on that list, and on funding, as to when it may be

In a report to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board last month, AT advised that: “any candidate bike rack locations that do not secure a place on a funded programme will be reprioritised annually for installation based on available funding.” Local board member Caitlin Watson says that AT staff are looking at a loop style rack, which she says may not cater for enough bikes. The rack will only be covered if funding allows. She says AT will meet the local board in the coming months to provide an indication of when the racks could be installed.

Solar powered rubbish bins that send a daily summary of how full they are will be trialled in four local board areas, including Hibiscus & Bays. The trial will mean that Ventia, which owns and funds the Smart Bins, will have 40 of the bins deployed across Auckland, with plans to install more. The bins send an alert when full so contractors know to empty them. They should take a while to reach capacity – the bins hold up to 600 litres, which is 10 times more than a standard street bin. They are fully enclosed. Auckland Council’s operational management and maintenance head, Agnes McCormack, says the bins will be positioned at “problem sites” to assess whether they would be a viable, cost effective option in the management of loose litter. It is intended that half of the bins will be installed next month, with

the remaining trial bins installed in December. Local boards are currently looking at priority areas where they would like to work more closely with suppliers – Hibiscus and Bays Local Board recently identified rubbish along the beachfront and in high use public areas as a priority.

New funding available for Coast projects

Hibiscus Coast community organisations can apply for funding from the “North Shore Fund”, the most recent addition to Auckland Foundation’s annual granting. The fund was launched last year with the support of Sir Stephen Tindall. Applications are sought from Hibiscus Coast groups with projects that address social disadvantage, promote health and wellbeing, or strengthen community. Grants of up to $5000 are available and will target predominantly volunteer-run organisations that otherwise don’t get a lot of funding. Applications are open July 1–August 10. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of September. Info: www.aucklandfoundation.org.nz

A colourful plea from 17-year-old Orewa College student Georgie Wilson won her a 10-day Spirit of NZ voyage, courtesy of Real Estate agent Karen Franklin. Karen says that the calibre of students entering the competition was extremely high, with all of them being young people who give back to the community. Karen interviewed the finalists and The Spirit of Adventure Trust selected Georgie from a shortlist of three applicants, saying they were impressed by her focus on ‘learning life lessons’ and being open to the experiences that may lie ahead on the voyage. Her application was written in a range of bright, bold colours, which also drew attention. This is the fourth year running that Karen has funded the fare of around $2000 for a young person who would like to go on a Spirit of NZ voyage but would normally be prevented from going because of the cost. The voyages involve various challenges as well as helping to sail the ship and can be life changing, boosting the young person’s confidence and self-belief.

Visual Voice Just about anyone with a phone can snap a photo, but this will never replace a well-composed, and professionally printed and framed photograph, according to the owner of Visual Voice, Paul Conroy. “Beautiful prints are timeless and they rarely happen by accident,” he says. “My philosophy is that if someone is going to go to the trouble of getting a professional print, then they deserve the best possible result.” Paul has put together a team of stylists and specialists for hair and make-up, as well as clothing to achieve this. “Self-image is really important to women so we make an effort to have them looking their best.” Time is also put in to getting acquainted with the client so that the photograph reflects who they are. A photo session can take up to three or four hours. “We don’t rush people – they need time to get used to being in front of the camera and I need time to get to know them so I can understand their story and reflect that in the photo. If it’s a family group, then the photo should genuinely reflect the relationships between the different members of the group.” The purpose-built studio in Centreway Road, Orewa, is equipped with a TV lounge, pinball machine and drinks fridge to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Although Paul has spent most of his life as an IT consultant with companies such as Microsoft, his move from England to New Zealand in 2003 coincided with a growing desire to breakaway from the Monday to Friday routine. “It was killing me,” he says. “I started photography as a hobby, did a diploma and then, before I knew it, I was shooting for the NRL, Softball NZ and doing weddings. “In the last 18 months, I’ve gravitated towards capturing people in a way that I’m really happy with. “One of my fondest memories as a child was flipping through the family albums with my Mum and grandmother – digital images on a computer will never replace that sort of experience.”

After seeing a documentary about the effect of plastics on our oceans, Stephanie Baird of Silverdale, pictured, knew she had to do something to create awareness and reduce plastic use. She was inspired by Australia’s Boomerang Bags initiative, which is fast going global. Boomerang Bags provides stores with reusable bags to offer shoppers instead of plastic bags. Stephanie signed up with the organisation and has held several sewing bees to make bags out of unwanted (but hygienic/new) fabric. Around 10 locals are on board, sewing bags at home. At least 100 bags have been made in the last four months; once 500 are ready, Boomerang Bags Hibiscus Coast will approach local businesses to see if they will support the initiative by offering the bags in-store. Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird member Paul Wilkinson attended Auckland Council’s inaugural Pestival on June 24. The event provided information and networking opportunities for organisations that work on pest and weed control. Paul says it was well worth attending, especially for the chance to meet members of other volunteer organisations and gather information on the latest technology. This includes traps that send a wireless signal to a central hub when they go off; that information is loaded live onto a GIS map making it easy for volunteers to see where traps have and have not been triggered.

Dog regos due

Dog registration fees paid by August 1 will benefit from cheaper, “early bird” rates. This year dog owners across the region also have the option of paying the fee by direct bank transfer. The Auckland region has more than 102,000 registered dogs. Registration fees contribute to animal management, including a 24-hour a day response to dog incidents and attacks, patrols, animal shelters and adoptions, dog safety education and reuniting lost dogs with owners. In the last calendar year the Animal Management team received more than 40,000 requests for service for issues such as barking, roaming stock and animal welfare. Renewal notices are now being sent out. Info: www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/dogs or vist the Council service centre in Centreway Road, Orewa.

Kingsway walks the walk for World Vision

A number of events at Kingsway School over the last six weeks have raised around $25,000 for World Vision. The events included a Coastwalk last month, where around 80 people, mostly students, were sponsored to walk 20km from Millwater to Gulf Harbour, from 10pm on Friday, June 9 to midnight on Saturday, June 10. One group walked to Gulf Harbour, then the next team walked the same distance back. The walk was first held last year and was primarily done by Year 13 students but this year it was opened to all senior students. Other events included a Quiz Night, a 40-hour gaming live stream and backpack challenge. Assistant head of senior school Colette Budler says the school is grateful for the community support and to students who have sacrificed and looked outside of themselves to raise money for those in need.

Brilliant cycling Around 25 people riding bikes around Te Ara Tahuna (Orewa Estuary walk/ cycleway) is nothing unusual, but this group really stood out. Riders and bikes taking part in the night-ride on June 24, run by the Thumbs Up Adventure Club, were decorated in lights of all kinds including glow sticks, tinsel and even flashing bike gloves. Participants ranged from retirees, to children supported and encouraged by their parents. Cars tooted, passers-by waved and photos were taken as the riders passed through Millwater and Orewa. Building with Karyn Phillips karyn@trenzhomes.co.nz

Subdivision at home With the current Unitary Plan now predominantly in place the number of secondary dwellings and minor units are increasing, filling in spare land on properties and unlocking the land’s financial potential. Many families and couples are taking advantage of the capital in their property, and borrowing to build a secondary dwelling – and I think it’s a smart move. A secondary dwelling can pay for itself in a very short space of time. Renting out the unit can see a loan paid off quickly (compared to normal mortgage terms) but the real bonuses happen after the loan is cleared. Firstly there’s that extra income coming in, if you keep renting it, helping pay off the main house mortgage or giving you extra funds if you are already mortgage free. Some are even moving into the minor unit and renting out their main house, enjoying the low maintenance and newness of the dwelling and gaining larger income from the main house. Secondly it provides flexibility – a second space for school leaving children who are more than often staying at home instead of leaving, or, a space for elderly parents. And thirdly it increases value of the entire property for resale should you wish to do so at some point. Your first step in assessing whether this works for you would be to check what the rules enable you to do, with the council or an independent consultant. Every house has a zone allocated to it, which has its own set of development rules that you must meet. So, it’s important to start at that point. Secondly meet with a mortgage adviser (even if you have a good relationship with your bank). See what you could borrow, crunch the numbers. Contact a local Real Estate agent to get an idea of the rent you could bring in. The average 65sqm minor unit should cost between $180,000 and $250,000 depending on the nature of your land and who you build with – it’s a wide cost spread due to a larger number of variables that each site brings. The house and build itself is fairly consistent in cost, but earthworks, drainlaying, Watercare and council requirements vary hugely from site to site. There are more cost effective options that rely mainly on reducing the size of the unit, but 65sqm is typically the maximum if you live in a residential environment. Your next step would be to approach a kitset company, group housing company or builder to do an assessment of costs. Be careful though that you are comparing apples with apples, and everyone is including the council fees, development contribution, Watercare connection charges and site costs in the overall budget or you might think you are getting the bargain of the century but end up with a nasty surprise. I have a handy one page costing sheet to allow you to check that the major costs have been allowed for, so give me a quick email (address above) and I’ll send you one to help you decide if this Minor Kitsets Kitsetsfrom from will work for you.

Historic cottage sold

Stanmore Bay Cottage was among the properties that were formerly part of the Masala restaurant chain, which were sold at auction last month. The historic cottage at 195 Brightside Road, formerly owned by JKK Holdings, fetched $1.73 million, with final settlement of the sale due on July 21. The adjacent residential property at 124 Stanmore Bay Road, also formerly owned by JKK Holdings, was sold at the same time to a different purchaser, for $650,000. The proceeds form part of a settlement between the owners of the Masala chain and the Crown under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act. Under the agreement, Masala forfeits a total of $8 million to the Crown to cover most of the unlawful benefit that its owners derived from tax evasion. Whether or not Paprika Restaurant, which has been operating from Stanmore Bay Cottage for a year, can remain in the property is an issue to be resolved between Paprika’s owners Bob and Anu Konar and the purchaser of Stanmore Bay Cottage (HM June 14).

Eight local community groups benefited from Z stations’ Good in the Hood. The scheme gives Z customers an opportunity to vote for the group they think is most deserving and funding is then split between those groups in proportion to the votes they receive. Last month $10,000 was divided between the local Coastguard, Hospice, Blue Light, Plunket, Love Soup, Whangaparaoa Community Patrol Charitable Trust, Victim Support and Look Good Feel Better NZ. The group that received the most votes locally was Coastguard Hibiscus, which received 49.6 percent of the votes at Z Whangaparaoa –this gave them $1984.

Community initiative warms families in need Winter will see many families forced to keep as warm as possible in cars, garages or cold, damp homes. However, an initiative started by two artists from Swanson in 2015 is wrapping warm arms around those families – and they are seeking help from the Hibiscus Coast community. Give a Kid a Blanket collects donations of warm bedding in Auckland and Tauranga and delivers them to families in need. It began as an extension of the political and social-focused art of Bernie Harfleet and Donna Turtle Sarten – and it is growing. The first year, 1273 blankets were collected at 26 drop off points – last year there were 48 drop off points and 2789 blankets were given out. This year’s collection runs from June 1–July 23 and there are 55 drop off points, including one at Susann Law’s home in Matakatia. Susann, an English teacher and mother of two young children, says she is providing a drop off point because she saw the project as a way for people to

make a real difference. “It feels good to know there are things we can do to help, even if they are small,” Susann says. “Children in these sad situations are the innocent victims of circumstances beyond their control and as teachers we sometimes see the effects

of that. We can’t solve the problem, but we can help warm up the kids.” The blankets are distributed to children and their families through public health nurses or social and family support workers. Bernie calls it “a little act of kindness that is collectively powerful”. He says of the 1273 blankets donated in 2015, just five recipients had single beds to put them on. “Most were bed sharing, or sleeping in cars or garages, or on floors,” Bernie says. So far three people on the Coast have donated blankets after seeing Susann’s Facebook post last month, and she also purchased some herself from local Op Shops. What is needed are blankets or quilts/duvets in good, clean condition, also sleeping bags and new pillows. Towels and sleep suits or hats for babies are also welcome. To donate, text Susann on 021 066 2800 or contact the Hibiscus Matters office (details on p2) if Orewa is more convenient for drop off.

Saints seek donations for laptops Local basketball team the Saints, made up of Year 7 students, are living up to their name, coming up with a project to give laptops to students whose families struggle to afford them. Team member Ryan Powell says that there are children in each of their classes at Whangaparaoa College who don’t have devices, or have broken ones that they can’t afford to fix. The school provides devices on loan, but generally these can’t be taken home. Ryan says that the devices are needed for homework, so students using borrowed devices stay in at lunchtime to complete their work. The team approached coach Linda Mika, who together with Julie King of Love Soup Hibiscus

Coast came up with a plan to raise money to purchase Chromebooks. Linda says that many parents struggle to pay for the laptops, especially if they have more than one school-aged child. With Warehouse Stationery Silverdale on board, this project is underway and donations towards the laptops can be made at the store. Any amount, large or small, is welcome. Linda says they are hoping to raise enough for 40 laptops; they cost $400 each but Warehouse Stationery is offering a 20 percent discount for the Saints’ Device Drive.

When you are selling Real Estate Talk your biggest asset, you’ll want the best team in Real Estate to represent you; a team that is consistently at the top of their game! Mike Pero Real Estate Matakana Coast

Andrew Steens, Brand & Territory Owner, Mike Pero Real Estate andrew.steens@mikepero.com

Recently we were fortunate enough to be on the Gold Coast; unfortunately, not for relaxation, but for education. Two days of sitting in a conference venue with 4,500 mostly Australian real estate agents and another day of sitting in a room with several hundred Mike Pero agents is not most people´s idea of fun; at least it was warm though! Conferences like this, where we learn from and associate with the best in the business from around the world, are an important part of "sharpening the axe" and making sure we provide the very best to our clients in terms of skills, ethics, technologies and systems. Aside from top real estate agents, we heard from a diverse range of speakers including the chief hostage negotiator from the FBI, an expert on Robots, a trend expert, a best-selling author, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist and even a nutritional expert to keep us on our game! To wrap it up, our annual awards night saw our team take out 10 major awards plus recognition for being one of the first Mike Pero franchises to open. That makes it 6 years in a row that we´ve taken the lion´s share of awards, reflecting the quality of the work that we do for our clients.

Real Estate Talk

Andrew Steens, Brand & Territory Owner, Mike Pero Real Estate andrew.steens@mikepero.com A combination of winter, lower property prices in central Auckland, the upcoming election and a general lack of properties for sale have combined to make this a slower than normal real estate market in Northern Rodney. As a property owner, you do need to be extra vigilant in a quiet market to make sure you are getting the maximum price for your property. In times like these, good agents will still be listing and selling a lot of property, after all people still need a place to live and other people that want or need to sell. But there will also be agents that are struggling to get listings and make sales. Be wary of agents knocking on your door or phoning to say they have a buyer for your property. While a one-off introduction can result in a great price, there have been many instances of the opposite happening. In a "quiet" sale process like this, you are not exposing your property to the market so there is less competition between buyers to pay the best price. How will you know that the price you´re being offered is at the top of the market? By law an agent must provide a written appraisal of your property with supporting evidence for the appraisal price, allow you time to get legal or other professional advice (which might include a registered valuation) and have you sign a listing agreement; all before they introduce a buyer to your property.

Point Wells - 64 Harbour View Road Rare Section In The Heart Of Point Wells! There are almost no undeveloped sections left on Harbour View Rd; one of the most sought after addresses in the "Old End" of this iconic Kiwiana village. Create your own dream home on this lovely piece of land which even has an orchard of mature fruit trees in place. For Sale - $625,000 Angela Wain 027 493 6800 angela.wain@mikepero.com Web - www.mikepero.com/1163320

Without these checks and balances in place, you are at more risk of underselling your biggest asset!

Boredombusters Sharing our ocean stories

Underwater cameraman Steve Hathaway and his daughter Riley, creators of the Young Ocean Explorers series, are on a mission to tell the stories of our marine creatures and local fans can hear from them in person at Orewa library next week. The series began four years ago, when Riley was 12 years old, and has taken the pair from their home in Snells Beach around the world to film sea creatures great and small. Stories from their latest trip, to Great Barrier Reef, will be shared at the library on July 12. It was the issue of plastic rubbish, ingested by turtles, that first got Riley interested in sea creatures and she says that remains her main focus. “Even at my school, Mahurangi College, I see plastic all over the ground when we live so close to so many amazing beaches,” Riley says. “I want to make people aware of the effects on our marine creatures and the environment.” She says a highlight of making films

with her father so far has been visiting the Kermadecs in 2015. “It was magical – tropical and with NZ fish and heaps of sharks everywhere you looked, including a rare sighting of the white tipped reef shark,” she says. Steve says that New Zealand’s underwater life is both under-reported and underrated – something he hopes his films will address. “NZ has not been documented properly underwater,” he says. “We have a lot of pride in our land flora and fauna and yet just on our doorstep we have this realm and magnificent creatures that are unique to NZ. As Kiwis, we have a love affair with the sea, but haven’t yet brought marine life into our story. I want to tell those stories because they’re uniquely ours. The more people connect with and understand the marine environment, the better, because it needs looking after to give it a better future. There is no shortage of stories – it’s just telling them in the most creative and engaging

Library looks beneath

The theme for the libraries’ school holiday programme is What Lies Beneath, which has provided many options for children at Orewa and Whangaparaoa libraries. In Whangaparaoa, the options include be a session on holograms, a visit from puppeteer Anna Bailey and a dinosaur dig. As well as the visit from Steve and Riley Hathaway (story this page), Orewa Library’s programme includes a chance to watch the NZ Black Stacks cup stacking team in action and a ‘Make your own Egyptian mummy’ session. Info: call into your local library.

way possible.” Currently Steve is working with Greenstone TV on an interactive website designed to help teachers and young people learn more about marine science. It goes live in September. Steve and Riley Hathaway will speak

at Orewa Library, Moana Ave, Orewa on Wednesday, July 12, 2.30pm– 3.30pm. Entry is free. They will have free posters of the Hauraki Gulf which “come to life”, unlocking videos, when you download an app and hold the device over the poster.

Authors’ exhibition

Photographs of New Zealand authors taken by Maja Moritz go on display at Whangaparaoa Library, July 1–August 31. The exhibition has already traveled around the South Island. A total of 43 authors had their portraits taken for the exhibition, which came about after the German press agency, dpa Picture Alliance, asked Maja to photograph the New Zealand authors who were at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair – New Zealand was guest of honour that year.

Become a stalker Do you eat broccoli stalks? If not, why not? Maybe you were only served the florets as a child, and you’ve never thought about eating the stalks – yet broccoli stalks are both edible and delicious. When you throw away a broccoli stalk you can be throwing away almost half of the vegetable – which not only is a waste of food, it is also a waste of money. To use the stalks, cut the very bottom off, remove any leaves and then use a vegetable peeler to peel the outer layer. You can then slice, chop, grate or spiralise them. Slice them and steam them with the florets, add them to a soup, stew, salad or stir fry, or grate them for fritters. This recipe for broccoli balls is a great one to make with children as it teaches them that the stalks can be delicious, as well as encouraging them to eat more vegetables. For more broccoli stalk recipes visit the Love Food/Hate Waste website (above).

Broccoli Balls

Makes approximately 12 balls Ingredients 2 cups broccoli, made up of grated broccoli stalk and/or cooked broccoli florets, finely chopped 1 small onion grated or finely chopped 1 egg 1/3 cup plain flour ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated ¼ teaspoon salt pepper to taste 1 tablespoon fresh herbs, finely chopped (optional) Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Mix all the ingredients together. Roll the mixture into teaspoon-sized balls then place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes, turning the broccoli balls about 8 minutes into cooking time.

FREE DENTAL CARE FOR YOUR TEENAGER

The annual Model Train Show in Whangaparaoa has become a big drawcard for ‘kids of all ages’. Pictured is the 2016 event.

Model magic returns to Whangaparaoa Hall The Auckland Marklin Club’s model train show, which it has been putting on at Whangaparaoa Hall annually since 2015, has become so successful that it is now the major event on the club’s calendar. Local Auckland Marklin Club member Philip Wrigley says the hall is a great venue, and the show gets tremendous support from the community. The Marklin Club is all about model trains, which chuff and wind their way through detailed scenes made by members. However, the show is also open to different kinds of modeling, so that local groups such as Hibiscus Radio Flyers, can participate. Graeme Beeson of Gulf Harbour will be there again with his warship models. A feature this time will be his 2.5m-long model of the battlecruiser HMS Repulse. Graeme will also have a ship under construction so that visitors can watch the painstaking process of building an exact replica. New to the show is Gulf Harbour Radio

Yacht Club with its radio-controlled vessels and the Auckland Central Model Railway Club. Hibiscus Radio Flyers will be back with a selection of powered model aircraft. The North Shore Model Rail Club, the largest north of the bridge, will have a bigger ‘layout’ of track this time, local n-gauge enthusiasts will run their personal layouts and there will be train displays that children will be able to operate. Marklin’s own display will have new segments, including a narrow-gauge logging railway running above the main line and a city scene behind the main station giving nearly 2m of perspective behind the running trains. Philip says that the ‘fiddle yard’, where trains are assembled, was popular with children last year and will be included again. The Model Train Show is on July 15 & 16 at Whangaparaoa Hall, 10am– 4.30pm. More info: see What’s On, p31.

Good oral health is a very important part of the general well-being of your entire family. We’re lucky in New Zealand to have publicly funded dental care available to our young people through the Adolescent Oral Health Services at the Ministry of Health. Here at The Dental Suite, we’re proud to be among the New Zealand dentists who are registered providers of this wonderful scheme. Educating young patients on their oral health, and preventing or treating tooth decay in adolescents, is a crucial way of shaping our community and the dental health of the next generation of young Kiwis. This scheme is a very rewarding area of our practice and we are very passionate about it! IS MY TEENAGER ENTITLED TO FREE DENTAL CARE? Every adolescent from Year 9 at school (generally 12-13 years old), all the way up to their 18th birthday is entitled to free dental care under the Adolescent Oral Health Services scheme, regardless of whether or not they are still at school, working, in an apprenticeship or at university early. WHAT TREATMENTS ARE COVERED BY THIS SCHEME? Each adolescent is entitled to one free dental examination per year. If our dentists determine that subsequent appointments will be necessary for treatment, the scheme will cover general dental work like fillings, cleanings, tooth extraction, fissure sealants and more. The scheme does not cover braces or any Orthodontic treatment, but if this is something your teenager is interested in, we will be able to refer you to an excellent Orthodontist. Treatment needed as a result of an injury or accident is also not covered, but in this case funding through ACC will apply. HOW DO I ENROL MY CHILD? Visit us at the clinic, or call us on (09) 426-5262, and tell us that you’d like to enrol your teenager for the Adolescent Oral Health Services. The process itself is very simple. We’ll have a Ministry of Health enrolment form ready for you to fill in and sign. Your child will then be registered easy! We will deal with the paperwork side of things, making it simple for you to give your child access to important dental care at absolutely no charge! It will set them up for life.

Puppet Shows

Orewa w: www.estuaryarts.org p: 09 4265570 Open 9am - 4pm daily

Puppets will come to life in various ways at the Festival of Puppetry exhibition at Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa. The festival, which runs from July 5–30, features puppets painted with fluorescent paint, displayed in a darkened room under UV light. The puppets are made by Little Green Man Productions, and their creators will be on hand at a workshop this weekend, July 8 and 9, to help children make their own glow-in-the-dark puppets as part of the art centre’s school holiday programme. Some of the country’s finest puppeteers are coming to the arts centre for the festival – Dan Martin will have an animatronic, voice activated puppet on display and there are performances featuring more traditional puppets, such as marionettes, and stop motion animation. The puppetry festival runs alongside the Art of Illusion exhibition, which includes photographs of clever optical illusions created by body painters and sand artist Jamie Harkins. The exhibition runs from July 5–30 and the School Holiday programme from July 8–23. Info: visit Estuary Arts Centre, Western Reserve, Orewa, www. estuaryarts.org or phone 426 5570.

Above, Body paint, including Sofia Bue Pederson’s ‘human marionette’, and below, 3D sand art by Jamie Harkins are included in Estuary Arts Centre’s Art of Illusion exhibition.

students a sense of what it could be like to have no food for their family. “Every student generously took part in this opportunity to help others and we were overwhelmed by their generosity and graciousness. All the donations are exactly what we use in our everyday parcels and were extremely well thought out,” Judith said. She told the students that the foodbank has had record numbers requiring assistance in the last two months and was struggling to meet the demand – the Fleming House contributions saved the day. “The shelves are now stacked to overflowing and we look forward to being able to assist many families over the coming months.”

Wentworth College’s Fleming House students decided to collect food for the Hibiscus Coast Community House’s foodbank last month, to help local people in need. The initiative is part of regular fundraisers organised by the school’s house groups. Little did the Fleming House students know that their timing could not have been better, with stocks running low at the foodbank due to high demand. Donations of non-perishable food from students, staff and the school community filled 23 banana boxes to the brim in just a few days. The food was collected by Judith Pearce on June 16. Judith said the process had obviously given the

Young artist rapt about raptors

Dinosaurs, as imagined for the Jurassic Park movies, are being recreated as art pieces by local preschool teacher Sam Domett. Sam describes herself as “a bit of a tomboy” who has always loved animals and dinosaurs in particular. She is also a huge fan of animation and movies such as Jaws and Jurassic Park. A wardrobe-sized cupboard in the lounge of her Army Bay home is filled with plastic Jurassic Park figures. One of her earliest memories is of her father drawing

the Disney version of Rudyard Kipling’s Shere Khan the tiger from The Jungle Book; and her mother and sister make pottery animals. Sam’s dinosaur drawings were her first in coloured pencil, and the first artworks that she’s offered for sale. Several have already sold from Estuary Arts Centre, and commissions have begun to come in. Info: look for Sam Domett’s dinosaurs (Raptorqueen89) on Facebook.

Manly’s Fire Truck and First Response Van will be on site for children (and adults) to crawl through, over and around and it will be a great opportunity to find out more about what the volunteer fire service does. There will also be home fire safety advice and resources available along with hot food and prize draws.

Lockwood Smith was a guest at Age Concern Rodney’s 20th birthday celebrations, where he received a warm welcome. Age Concern chief executive Catherine Smith says the former Rodney MP has been a big supporter of the organisation from the early days and he is well known among members, having sung at its fundraising concerts for several years, starting in 2010. Mr Smith says although he is now officially retired, he is still doing “an awful lot of speeches”. CONTEMPORARY FAMILY DENTISTRY

with Dr Peter Hall peter@familydoctors.nz

Experience gentle care Experience technology

Precious time Why are patients called patients? The root word has the meaning of undergo, suffer or bear. But what it makes me think of is waiting. Patients do a lot of waiting. We even have special rooms for the purpose. I did propose that we redefine our waiting area as a “hospitality lounge”, but that didn’t fly! And then if you need public treatment you end up waiting again. So a big chunk of our work now is finding out where people are “on the list” and then pushing for an upgrade. And I totally understand how frustrating this can be. Personally I don’t like waiting at all. I even got a bit ticked off when I phoned my own surgery and had to go through a couple of steps on the phone tree before a real person answered. But I can live with waiting if I know why I’m waiting, how long I’m going to have to wait for and whether anybody cares about it. Which brings us back to the patient experience in general practice. In our customer surveys the commonest complaint is about waiting times and the commonest request is that they could have more time with the doctor. As you can see this can create a significant tension. While we try hard to run to time, when somebody walks in the door a GP really has no idea whether they are going to need two minutes or two hours. One develops some skills and strategies to manage this, but there are absolutely times when a good doctor has to put down their pen, push the tissue box toward the patient and accept that they will need his or her undivided attention for as long as it takes. What should happen then is that the front desk staff and nurses step in to inform waiting patients of delays, offer them options and do their best to reschedule or find a workaround. Our experience is that most people tolerate a 10–15 minute delay, but after that they start to get restless and want to know what’s going on. I suggest that if the staff don’t realise, just have a little chat – there’s almost always something that can be done to meet your needs. I do have to put in a word for the well-organised patient, especially those who tell us in advance if they are going to need extra time.

Air pistol club targets new facility at Bowls Orewa

Fishing with Damian Clayton whangaparaoa@topcatch.co.nz

Air pistol shooters could be rubbing shoulders with bowlers and petanque players, forming a sports hub in Western Reserve, if a scheme suggested to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board last month goes ahead. The proposal is to build an air pistol could have as many as 20 bays as well facility on the northern side of Bowls as clubrooms, toilets and kitchen Orewa, within the footprint that the facilities. This would enable it to attract bowling club leases from Auckland national events and potentially establish Council. a National Air Gun Training Academy, Hibiscus Coast Air Pistol Club which would be used to train youth, Executive committee member Hugh disabled and able-bodied shooters to Lemmon told the local board that the compete at national and international club’s current location, at Wentworth competitions including the Paralympics, College gym, has been great but that Commonwealth Games, Olympic the club needs its own facility in order Games and World Cup events. to cater for growth in the sport. They would also be able to run school “We have an opportunity to establish holiday programmes “to increase the ourselves and build a world class skills, concentration and discipline in facility,” Mr Lemmon said. He said our local youth while enforcing the they have agreement in principle from safe handling of air guns”. the bowling club. Mr Yelavich says although the club Hibiscus Coast Air Pistol Club will ensure soundproofing is dealt president and coach Greg Yelavich is with in any facility, “probably the also on Bowls Orewa’s board, which bowlers make more noise than the air is how the suggestion of building the pistol shooters do”. facility there came about. The proposal will require an alteration He says that while most air pistol clubs to Bowls Orewa’s lease, and the Air have 10 to 12 shooting bays, he hopes Pistol club will come back to the local that the proposed centre in Orewa board as plans progress.

Chocolate helps

The good fishing continues and it’s evident that we have a late season again. The water temperature is slowly dropping but the fish are feeding aggressively as they put on condition (a layer of fat) to see them through the cooler months. The kahawai are feeding on vast whitebait schools all around our coast and with activity like this the snapper and kingfish are never too far away. Drift fishing through these schools of feeding fish, using jigs, soft baits and baits, is an easy way to stay with the fish as they move around feeding. Alternatively you could anchor up-tide from the activity and strayline or float baits back to the feeding fish. Hold these fish in the area with a berley trail. I have been using salmon berley when fishing in close and a pilchard and bonito berley when out deeper in the Gulf. I find the salmon berley is good inshore where there are less sharks. You might find that the kids would like to give fishing a go these school holidays. The great thing about fishing is that you can make it as hardcore or as casual as you want. Around our coast we have very accessible places to fish from the shore and this is a good option for a child’s fishing trip. I know from previous experience that the young ones’ attention span can dwindle quite quickly if they are not catching or actively doing something during the trip. Here are a few tips that can help them enjoy a few hours fishing: yy Turn it into a contest – a chocolate fish for the biggest fish! yy Fish in a location where they can safely wander off, explore rock pools, build sand castles or feed the little fish while they wait for better bites. yy Take snacks and a drink because they will get hungry. yy Try not to travel too far as this can take the fun out of the excursion – “are we there yet?” yy Around the Hibiscus Coast you could try the Weiti River wharf, the Gulf Harbour breakwater, the rocky ledge at the end of Pinecrest Drive (follow the path down to the rocks), Wenderholm River, Army Bay and Little Manly beach. All are areas where you have a reasonable chance of catching a fish for tea. Most of these areas will work best on the rising tide when the fish move in closer to feed. You might also want to keep a look out for birds feeding near the shore. In most cases there will be kahawai and maybe snapper under them as they feed on the whitebait.

Sailors represent NZ

Wentworth College student Sean Herbert will head to Lake Garda, Italy to represent NZ in the O’pen Bic Worlds (July 31–August 5). This will be Sean’s fourth World’s event and he is looking forward to the challenge of testing his skills against some very tough competition. Later in August he will also compete, along with Mikayla Butler (also from Wentworth College) in the Youth 420 Team Sailing Worlds, at the same venue. The team of six New Zealand sailors will be training hard between now and late July. Info: New Zealand Youth Team Sailing on Facebook.

Breakfast of champions

On the eve of the first test between the All Blacks and the Lions, a group of college students shared breakfast at Eden Park with former players as well as attending a pre-match ‘captain’s run’. Twenty-five students, including two from Whangaparaoa College and one from Kingsway School, took part in the ASB Young Leaders Rugby Experience on Friday, June 23. Whangaparaoa School principal James Thomas says the school nominated prefects and keen sports players Amber Ferreira and Matt Ripley because of their positive leadership qualities. Amber said it was an awesome experience which included watching the captain’s run (a training session run by the team captain). This session is usually closed to the public because it is when the team practises planned plays for the game. The students also went behind the scenes including walking through the Whangaparaoa College prefect tunnel that players run through to get Amber Ferreira with All Black Beauden Barrett. onto the field at Eden Park.

A small, dedicated bunch of volunteers worked hard to get thousands of plants in the ground. From left, Shakespear Regional Park was busy on June 18, with a race taking place as well as community plantings. Whangaparaoa Lions John Lambert, left, and Alister McKinnon regularly take part in the plantings.

Green fingers get to work

The green places around the Hibiscus Coast are getting greener with the planting season well underway. Hundreds of volunteers are turning up to weekend community plantings around the Coast, with some of the biggest at Shakespear Open Sanctuary – two plantings last month at the open sanctuary drew more than 150 volunteers each time. Fences have come down and around 4000 plants gone in on 3ha of land within the pest proof fence; the ground is still covered in cowpats but is now retired from farming. Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society chair Peter Jackson says the plan is to gradually plant up the steep-sided gullies, leaving the farmed area on the ridgelines, where it’s easier to maintain. New plantings will link several areas of existing bush, extending bird habitat and also change the look of the park. Peter says that, after around 40 years of planting, the end is in sight with potentially “just a decade or so” of planting to go. The next SOSSI planting day is on July 16 – see What’s The Clavier family from Birkdale – even three-yearOn p31, for details. old Kenji got in on the act.

Weiti riverbank makeover Compared with Shakespear Open Sanctuary’s plantings, volunteers were a lot thinner on the ground at a Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird community planting alongside the Weiti River at Silverdale on June 25. A total of 15 volunteers – including several Forest & Bird members – had to get 1700 native seedlings in the ground – a task that took them three hours. Richard Chambers, who was coordinating the event for the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, said that it would have been nice to have more locals involved, however there are a lot of planting events on, both locally and around Auckland, which made the turnout not unexpected. The planting on the river’s edge at 36 Hibiscus Coast Highway will enhance the new reserve to be formed there but the big issue, according to volunteer Vern Rule, is the positive effect it will have on water quality. The river was not always heavily silted and filled with mangroves – a result of development. Vern recalls hearing several years ago from a resident who swam in the Weiti River as a young person, around 80 years ago. A pest trapping line will be set in the area – Vern has already been trapping there and caught 13 possums in less than a month. The next Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird planting day is on July 16. See What’s On, p31 for details.
