It’s our birthday! Hibiscus Matters is celebrating 10 years of telling the stories, celebrating the people and reporting the issues that make the Hibiscus Coast tick. From our first issue in August 2007 to the one that’s in your hands, or on your screen now, we think our focus on keeping readers right up to date, accurately informed and entertained, is key to our success. To celebrate with us, visit our display at Estuary Arts Centre, Orewa, this week, which captures some of the topical moments of the past decade with stories and photographs. We hope it brings back some memories; see you there!

Coast athletes excel at international events July appears to have been a magic month for a number of young Hibiscus Coast athletes who competed in major international competitions, with impressive results. Whangaparaoa netballer Michaela Sokolich-Beatson is fast making a name for herself within the Mystics squad and was chosen to captain the New Zealand U21 team which

contested the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana, July 8–16. The International Netball Federation describes the event as “the pinnacle of netball competition for emerging players”. The NZ team went in as defending champions and faced Australia in the final, securing a 60–57 win in a close fought match. Later this month, Michaela will trial

for the Silver Ferns squad. Local swimmer Finn KennardCampbell of Arkles Bay backstroked his way to the podium, bringing back Gold, Silver and Bronze medals (one of each) from the Commonwealth Youth Games, held in the Bahamas July 19–23. The Gold was for the Men’s 50m

backstroke, Bronze for the Men’s 100m backstroke and Silver in the 400m mixed medley (first leg, 100m backstroke). The nine members of the NZ swim team excelled in the pool, coming second to England on the medal table with 20 medals, seven of them Gold – just one behind the English tally. continued page 2

Across all sports, the NZ team ended up in third place, behind England and Australia. The Kiwis also earned praise for donating a suitcase full of NZ branded sports gear to the Tanzanian team who were struggling for kit. Finn has been selected for the Swimming NZ national team and High Performance Sport NZ and Sport NZ’s ‘pathway to podium’ programme. He will represent NZ again at the Australian State teams short course championship in October. “I want to thank the Whangaparaoa Rotary club for their generous contribution towards the cost of competing at the Games, along with family and friends who donated to my Give-a-little page,” he says. Preparation for a kickboxing title fight in the Pacific Islands took Marcus Heywood a solid two months, at Dynamic Martial Arts in Silverdale. The Stanmore Bay fighter, aged 23, attended the first World Kickboxing Association (WKA) sanctioned event in Tahiti at the end of June with a fiveperson NZ team. Here he came up against Teva Paulet of Tahiti in a five-round fight for the

Under 76kg Polynesia title – winning this gave him his first international title. The competition was overseen by WKA Oceania regional director Dave Sawyer of Dynamic Martial Arts. “Marcus was motivated in that final round by the recent birth of his baby,” Dave Sawyer says. Lifesavers leave it all in the pool Two solid days of racing in the pool on July 21 and 22 saw New Zealand’s surf lifesaving team finish in fifth place overall at the World Games in Poland. It’s been nine years since New Zealand last sent a lifesaving team to the World Games and the selected athletes include Northern Arena’s Steven Kent and Orewa surf lifesaver Ella Drinnan. They were up against some of the best athletes in the world. Multi-sport event and team manager Mark Weatherall says the event was a great experience for the team of 10 athletes, who set many new personal bests. “I’m very proud of the team and it’s an important step towards next year’s Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide,” he says.

New building going up in central Orewa

Silverdale infrastructure boost The provision of what Cr Wayne Walker calls “the most significant new infrastructure on the Coast for a very long time” has been made possible by a new funding model designed to speed up housing developments. An investment of $201 million sourced from Government and the private sector via a company called Crown Infrastructure Partners, will provide in Silverdale/Wainui for a new arterial road ($60 million), the Curley Ave Bridge ($89 million), a service reservoir ($15 million), water supply booster pump station ($10 million), sewer and pump station ($25 million) and stormwater ($2 million). The infrastructure will allow residential housing development to be expanded over the next 30 years, providing for up to 7500 houses to be built in Wainui – which is around 5500 more than was previously possible under the Unitary Plan, given infrastructure constraints. The announcement of the new funding was made recently, on July 23. Crown Infrastructure Partners will establish Special Purposes Vehicles (SPVs), with the long-term goal of “changing the market for infrastructure provision in NZ”, investing in road and water infrastructure instead of Councils. SPVs will be funded by development

contributions and targeted rates charged to residents of the new subdivisions. Cr Wayne Walker says he understands that the plan for the roading network to be created in Silverdale includes a new proposal for a link via a bridge across the northern motorway into Milldale in Wainui East, which he says will be “a massive undertaking”. There will also be a bridge across the upper Weiti River at Curley Ave (see map). The first project to be funded by the Special Purposes Vehicle is in Drury, but Cr Walker says work is already underway on securing the land necessary for the Wainui infrastructure. He says the plan will make lights at the intersection of Silverdale Street and Hibiscus Coast Highway, which have been put on Auckland Transport’s ‘to do list’ after a long battle by local residents, redundant. “The last thing you should do is put any lights in ahead of this,” Cr Walker says. “The project uses existing lights at the East Coast Rd and Hibiscus Coast Highway intersection and links Silverdale from all directions. It just doesn’t make sense to have another set of lights at a dangerous location that will bog down traffic and mobility.” He says the Wainui work will also accelerate other transport improvements, such as walking and

cycling and the bus network, giving the buses a much more direct route. However, Silverdale resident Lorraine Sampson who has had a long involvement with trying to solve transport issues for the area, says while the planned roading improvements may be helpful for people going to and from Millwater and Wainui, they do nothing for the Village or the industrial park. She says the money would be better spent on connecting Silverdale Village

with the industrial side via a signalised intersection. “They’re forgetting the business park is the employment hub and will provide jobs for those new residents, so proper access in and out is crucial,” Mrs Sampson says. “The first priority for funding should be projects that help existing residents and ratepayers, not the ones who haven’t moved here yet. Where there’s new development, things get done, but there’s nothing in the pot for the existing area as we struggle along.”

Keep us safe

This whole Dynamic Lanes project shows the attitude that Auckland Transport seems to have towards the public. We are made to feel like we should be grateful for something that we have had very little input on, and that raises real concerns. I was at the meeting at Red Beach School and can see that for the wider community on the peninsula using the road as their only way in and out, it has merit. But if you’re going to use us as guinea pigs, at least make sure that the experiment is safe for all road users. I would have thought that was the very least we could expect. Diane Campbell, Red Beach

Show compassion I read with a great deal of fury your two stories about hedgehogs and cat free covenants on the Coast. Both had the common denominator Hibiscus Coast Forest and Bird, “conservationists” – more like bullies. It seems to be ‘your way or the highway’. Firstly, compassion for all species, and I applaud the lady that shows that to the hedgehogs, good for you – the world needs more kind compassionate people. Hedgehogs and other species are an introduced species by man, the biggest predator on the planet. Oops, never mind, no compassion for them. Man introduced them, now let’s slaughter them! Secondly, cat-free covenants on the coast. I have two cats, one indoors and one allowed out on my property during the day only. This is for my cats’ safety and wellbeing and me, being a caring responsible owner. Neither cats have any interest in birds and if they did, they would not be given the opportunity to harm the birds. I like all creatures and my responsibility is to ensure no harm comes to any other species by my family, furry or otherwise. It annoys me greatly when a group of people think they know everything and ban everything. I am fed up with it being

assumed that we are all idiots and legislated accordingly. We have a real problem in this country with abuse of women and children and animals. Broad-spectrum compassion for others (people and animals) needs to be taught at schools for those poor children that have never known it. If we start there we may have a chance at saving species and the country. Catarina Militia, Gulf Harbour

Dynamic questions I could not attend either of the recent meetings on the Dynamic Lanes, but have the following comments and queries for Auckland Transport to consider based on what was reported and quoted in Hibiscus Matters, July 19 edition. Auckland Harbour Bridge also has a concrete barrier separating the opposing traffic flows; why is this hard barrier not required on Whangaparaoa Road where the lanes will also change flow direction? Penlink will reduce traffic flow on this section of road by more than 40 percent of the current levels. If Penlink is completed, this section of road will not need widening at all, never mind 10 years from now. Bear in mind, that while engineers believe the median strip to be a ‘wasted road space’, the existing median strip is currently the only means of refuge and safe access during peak traffic flow that vehicles must turn onto or off Whangaparaoa Road from the side roads that intersect in this section of road. Who accepts responsibility for the accidents that will occur in this lane? If AT takes safety seriously, they will do all that is reasonably practicable to ensure the safety of the public who are using the road – as legislation requires. Reacting to an incident is never the safest way. The whole purpose of this project is to improve flow on this section of road and remove the bottlenecks already evident here. Now you have stated that the engineers do not expect vehicles to

be able to even achieve the reduced speed limit of 50 kph. The problem is the bottleneck, and the bottleneck will still exist every time a vehicle needs to turn off or on to Whangaparaoa Rd. How can construction begin, in fact, how can a budget be approved, to spend public money, when the due diligence has simply not been completed? How has a Project Director / Project Manager been given an ‘Approved for Construction’ stamp at this stage of a project? On another note, has the impact of the proposed changes to the Silverdale intersection also been taken into consideration when this trial has been ‘studied’? Michael Skyrme, Stanmore Bay (abridged)

We wonder whether the road marking people took a cellphone call while drawing the centre line down Keith Morris Lane in Orewa? Strange that we only just noticed this as it was done a long time ago.

Hedgehogs “like gorse” The article on the hedgehog issue was very balanced I think (HM July 5). It is a difficult issue. I was at the library talk and think Forest & Bird was right to make any potential carers aware of the fact that they’re dealing with an introduced pest. It was important to put all the facts out there, so people can decide for themselves. It’s something I thought about a lot before I turned up to the talk. On balance I think Forest and Bird are right. There is no need to be cruel to any creature, but taking that next step of nurturing a species that does damage to our natural environment makes no sense to me. We surely wouldn’t do the same for rats or possums? Our native birds developed without ground dwelling mammals like hedgehogs. At the talk the Hedgehog Lady described the introduction of hedgehogs from England as “brought in, like gorse” – an apt comparison. With hindsight we see the problems that introducing any species can bring. Now we need to find ways to humanely deal with the effects of those mistakes on our native wildlife. Angela Robinson, Hatfields Beach

Auckland Transport didn’t get off to a very good start at its public meeting about Dynamic Lanes in Red Beach last month. The first slide, which was up on the screen as people arrived at the hall, spelt Whangaparaoa incorrectly – ‘Whangaporaoa’.

Feedback cont... Cute carnivores What allows hedgehog protection enthusiasts to flourish is the “cute factor”. It’s the only reason people are prepared to spend so much time and energy caring for an introduced pest. I used to value the way the hedgehogs wandered around my garden, eating slugs and snails but since then I’ve learned more about the damage they do as carnivores in our environment. It’s so important to protect our rare, indigenous bird species and that should be the priority. Stephen Webster, Army Bay

Masters medals replaced Dairy Flat bowler Scott Curran will have his stolen World Masters Games medals replaced as a result of a story in the July 19 issue of Hibiscus Matters. Scott won Gold for the Mixed Pairs (age 30 to 39) and Men’s Fours (40-49) at the Masters and was hoping to pass them down to his son. The story described how Scott’s medals went missing from the Carlton Bowling Club in Auckland not long after the Games ended. After seeing the story, a World Masters Games softball umpire from Red Beach saw the story and offered to gift the medal that he received for his umpiring services to Scott. Scott was just about to take up the generous offer, when he was contacted by World Master Games chief executive Jennah Wooten last week. She said a relative had seen the story in the paper and contacted her. As a result, replacements for both Scott’s missing medals will be couriered to him. Scott says he’s over the moon with the result and thanks everyone who offered to help.

Hibiscus Matters was sad to hear of the recent death of John Drury of Orewa, at hospice. John had a long involvement with the Orewa Ratepayers and Residents Association, including many years as president. He was known for his forthright views and for never hesitating to champion a worthy cause on behalf of the community. John was among those instrumental in getting developers’ plans for high rise buildings in central Orewa quashed in the Environment Court.

Katja May of Red Beach is well used to spending time with ocean creatures in her role as managing director of ecotour company Blue Voluntours. These photos are from a special encounter with dolphins that began at Gulf Harbour on July 16. “We first encountered them coming out of Gulf Harbour Marina, then we left them behind and anchored at a bay on the eastern tip of Kawau. Just when we were about to leave they came and revisited us,” Katja says. She says that boatie Chris Torckler was super cautious around the dolphins.

The change to new maintenance contracts last month has been a backward step for a children’s playground in Millwater, according to residents and a local councillor. Since parents complained to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board about the use of Glyphosate/Roundup in the little playground in Botanical Drive, at the end of 2015, it has been a no-go area for sprays, However, parents became aware on July 17 that spraying was taking place. It was subsequently confirmed that Glyphosate was sprayed on weeds there. Gull officially opens its unmanned site at 315 Wainui Road this week, after obtaining resource consent in September last year. The site offers 24/7 drive-through, pay-at-pump technology for purchase of Regular 91 and Gull Force (98) petrol, as well as diesel. The arrival of the Gull station in Wainui Road is expected to impact on petrol prices around the Coast – something that the NZ Automobile Association calls “the Gull effect”. This is the localised drop in prices at the pump across Gull’s competitors that has been observed elsewhere in the country following the opening of a Gull site. Local petrol prices have long been a source of complaint on the Coast and were the subject of an investigation by Hibiscus Matters in May last year. The local community is invited to the official Opening Celebration, which will be held this weekend, on

Viewpoint with Phil Goff, Auckland Mayor phil.goff@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

New funds just a start July was another busy month for Auckland Council, with significant announcements made on housing and transport. On July 11 I joined the Finance Minister, Steven Joyce to announce a new $300 million infrastructure investment for Auckland. Provided through the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF), the investment will bring forward construction of 10,500 new homes in Whenuapai and Redhills. Under the HIF millions will also be invested in transport infrastructure, including an extension to Fred Taylor Drive and Northside Drive, an update and realignment of Trig Road and a new bridge crossing to the West Harbour ferry terminal. These upgrades will deliver benefits for commuters in the north-west of our city while driving whole-of-network improvements by reducing congestion, creating more transport choice and improving travel times. July also saw the announcement of Crown Infrastructure Partners, a new infrastructure investment vehicle that will enable the construction of thousands of new homes in Auckland. Earlier this year we took to Government the concept of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to fund infrastructure in a way that recognises constraints on further Council borrowing. Under this vehicle we have lodged proposals with Government that would enable us to bring forward construction of around 23,300 new homes in South and North Auckland, much earlier than would otherwise be possible. The initial investment of $387 million in transport and water infrastructure in Drury South and West, Paerata and Pukekohe will enable the construction of 17,800 dwellings much earlier than would otherwise be the case. A further major development will be around Wainui in North Auckland with $200 million in infrastructure funding required for an additional 5500 dwellings. The new investment vehicle will provide capital from Government and the private sector which will not be debt on Council’s books. It will be funded through development contributions and infrastructure charges within the new housing developments. Combined, the HIF and Crown Infrastructure Partners will deliver close to a billion dollars in new infrastructure spending for Auckland. The new investment speaks to the strong and constructive relationship between Council and Government and is a great start in tackling our city’s housing and transport challenges. But it is only a start. More investment is needed to bring forward the important projects our city needs to keep pace with growth, and I will continue to engage with Government to ensure Auckland can build the infrastructure it needs to grow up and out.

Puhoi Village planning bus turnaround

Plans to establish a proper school bus turnaround in Puhoi Village are underway to improve child safety and reduce congestion. The Puhoi Community Forum hopes to construct the turnaround, with the capacity to hold more than one bus, in an open space opposite Puhoi River Motors. As it stands busses are forced to do a three point turn using the one way bridge that links to the Puhoi Sports Club carpark. Puhoi Community Forum co-chair Dustyn O’Leary says it’s an issue that everyone in the community talks about. “We are looking to put this in as infrastructure for the long term,” Dustyn says. The project would also include a footbridge for access to the turnaround over the river arm that runs between the open space and the sports club. “Currently there is no safe pedestrian route across the river arm so the footbridge will be essential if we want to do this project.” The forum plans to have costings and public consultation sorted before next year, however approval is also needed from Auckland Transport (AT). “I have contacted three people from AT and I’m yet to have any feedback on the idea.” Dustyn says the main issue will be soil stability and run off into the river, but would like to see the project completed in the next two years. Talks are also being held with Puhoi River Motors owner Russell Green with possible concerns that vehicles may use his premises as parking due to its location. The turnaround could also cater for tour busses to free up car parking in the village. The whole project is expected to cost within the hundreds of thousands of dollars, which will be covered by grants and fundraising.

Two local businessmen have stepped Hibiscus Coast Community RSA. Business consultant Andy Thomason says Hibiscus Matters’ front-page story on the RSA’s financial struggles last April was the catalyst for him to get involved. He has been working with the club, with the backing of the committee, for around eight weeks and a key focus is to improve communication within the club. He also brought in a friend, Dean Morris of Storm Entertainment, who is working with the club in Vipond Road to make the most of what he says is a fantastic venue. The tribute band shows that Dean put on at Jacs often brought in full houses. Dean is excited about the possibilities afforded by the RSA, which has the capacity for almost 400 people. He began by talking with members. “It’s important that we provide something that existing members want, but also attract new members with a choice of musical genres,” Dean says. He is bringing tribute bands such as Pink Floyd and The Eagles into the mix, as well as Open Mic nights. A Ball is planned for later in the year.

President Frank Coggan’s suggestion of a talent quest is another project, which is now underway. Coast Kids with Talent is open to anyone aged 13–19, with any kind of talent. Registration is open now and a series of shows at the RSA leading up to a grand final will start in September. Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges. There is a cash prize of $1000, or recording time to the same value. Anyone interested in taking part can private message Dean Morris on Facebook or phone him on 021 183 1504. An Open Day at the RSA is also planned for Saturday, September 9, which will include markets, entertainment and a dinner and dance in the evening. More details will be in this paper in due course. “We want to show off this fantastic venue and make the most of it,” Dean says. “I’m really excited about bringing in a high level of entertainment and attracting new audiences who could become members.”

Twenty-five years a Toastmaster Army Bay resident, Bjorn Weis Simonsen has achieved a speaking milestone. His longevity with Toastmasters – 25 years – will be recognised by the organisation with a Long Service Award. His achievement was marked at Bjorn’s club, Hibiscus Coast Toastmasters, recently. It was Bjorn’s famous Danish cake all-round as the Manly based club also celebrated their Silver Anniversary as a club. Bjorn joined Toastmasters in Hastings in 1992. He has also been a member at Waipukurau, Warkworth, SilverdaleOrewa and, during an English teaching assignment in China, he established the ‘First Fuzhou Toastmasters Club’ in 2009 as one of three High Performance Leadership projects that he has done. Teaching has taken Bjorn and his wife, Lene, who is also a member of Hibiscus Coast Toastmasters Club, around the world including to Tanzania, Tonga, Fiji and Australia. “I believe that the Toastmasters International Programme is one of the best I’ve ever seen in my time as an English teacher,” Bjorn says. “It’s not a weekend crash-course. You get back what you put in with great interest.” Bjorn has mentored many younger Toastmasters including Hibiscus Coast local Alexander Kuch who, at 22, is a global speaker on children’s adoption rights, meeting with foreign dignitaries and volunteers as a youth ambassador. Alex says Bjorn has pushed him to achieve his full potential. “I have learned

Hibiscus Coast Toastmasters welcomes new members who are keen to improve their skills in speaking and leadership. Meetings are fortnightly at the Bridge Club in Edith Hopper Park, Manly. The emphasis is always on having fun but this is especially so at the club’s annual Humorous Speech Contest, which takes place this week, on August 8 at 7.15pm. Guests are warmly welcomed. You might even hear a quip or two from the master himself! Bjorn will be presented with a District 72 (New Zealand) Long Service Award from Toastmasters International later this year.

Rating values explained Auckland Council will update rating values this year, and we often get asked, given the positive market movement since the last rating valuation, will my rates increase? Well, the answer is complicated, but to put it simply – it depends! Councils apportion rates based on rating values (RVs). These are assessed every three years using a mass appraisal approach, largely computer calculated and considering a number of factors such as property type, location, land size, zoning, dwelling floor area, consented work and recent sales data. Based on the 2013 Census, there are over 470,000 dwellings in Auckland, plus thousands of commercial properties, so assessing RVs is no easy task. The process has improved with access to a lot more data but it is not an accurate assessment of current market value, nor should the information be used for insurance purposes. The process calculates a Capital Value (CV) being an estimate of the selling price, used as the Rateable Value (RV); a Land Value (LV), the most likely bare land selling value; and Improvements Value (IV) being the difference between the RV and LV. Due to the number of properties, this process cannot individually assess every property, accurately taking into consideration things such as views, amenities, condition, fixtures and features which contribute to the appeal, and therefore the market value, of a property. It also relies on having accurate property data, which is not always the case, especially when it comes to dwelling sizes. Traditionally, purchasers have used the RV as a benchmark when assessing market value, which is clearly flawed and becomes even more meaningless as the market moves over time. There has been considerable market movement since the last rating valuations were done; REINZ records the median sales value for all of Auckland as being $610,000 in July 2014 compared with $845,000 in June 2017 (a 39 percent increase), so how may this effect rates? Firstly the Council set their budget based on their planned spending for the new financial year. After all fixed charges per rateable property are calculated (Uniform Annual General Charge, Waste Management Fee and Transport Levy) and deducted from their total budget, the remainder is generally apportioned over all rateable properties (based on type – residential, rural or commercial) with weighting applied depending on the proportion of rates paid by each property type. The share of this remainder is apportioned using the RV. Therefore, many factors influence the change in a rates bill – the amount that Council has increased its budget, the change in number of rateable properties (affecting the total value of fixed charges), the way Council applies the weighting factor between property type and finally, compared to the last RV assessment, how much a property has changed in relation to others in Auckland. For example, if your RV has increased since July 2014, but not as much as the rest of Auckland, it could be possible, depending on all the other factors, for your rates to remain the same or decrease as the greater share of the increase is absorbed by other properties. Those whose zoning has changed to higher density under the new Unitary Plan may see significant increases in their land values in relation to other properties, so the opposite may apply there, with rates increasing by a greater than average amount. Rates for this year have already been assessed based on the July 2014 RVs, and new RVs will be available in November for assessing next year’s rates. It is still important to look at the new RVs and see if they fairly represent the value of your property. Houseowners can object to the assessed RV within a set timeframe, requiring the valuers completing the RV to take a closer look at the assessed value for features not considered using the mass appraisal process. Any review of an RV will obviously adjust the amount of rates paid.

Coast rock craze continues

The craze that was taken up by Hibiscus Coast children last summer for painting, hiding and searching for small rocks outdoors remains popular and rock hunters were out in force during the recent school holidays. The #HBCrocks Facebook page currently has more than 1250 members (HM Feb 1). Its originator, Toni Williams, says winter weather is no barrier to this activity – wet weather is a great time to paint rocks at home and then they can be taken outside to hide when it fines up. Stanmore Bay is a particularly popular place to leave and search for rocks but the activity is going on all around the Coast. There is a lot of creative fun to be had in painting the rocks and finders can keep Tatyana Levshina’s daughter Sasha, the rocks, photograph them, replace aged two, is a keen rock hunter who is pictured at home in Stanmore Bay them with others, or re-hide them. For locals, writing #HBCRocks on with a recently found ‘shark rock’. the back makes them recognizable Facebook page to see what becomes of and allows others to search the local their rock.

Rodney Labour candidate Marja Lubeck, left, joined Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird volunteers on a community planting day on July 16 at Karaka Cove Reserve in Whangaparaoa. It was a great day’s planting, with a total of 600 plants going in.

When Jacky Zhou came to New Zealand looking for a better education and opportunities, he didn’t expect to find a new “mother” as well. But when he went to work for Tim and Travena Howard, at Hibiscus Coast Service Centre, Whangaparaoa, two-and-a-half years ago, that’s what happened. Jacky recently bought the business, but Tim and Travena will be staying on in the immediate future to ensure a smooth handover. Tim, an auto electrician, mechanic and motorcycle specialist, will continue in the workshop and Travena will help with the administration. “We’ve been working a long time and just felt it was time to handover the responsibilities that come with running a business,” Travena says. “We’re ready to take life a little easier.” Originally from Beijing, Jacky went to Wentworth College before his love of cars drew him to the automotive industry. He did an automotive

engineering course at Unitec (Level 7) and later joined the team at Hibiscus Coast Service Centre. The workshop is a member of the Motor Trades Association and offers a range of mechanical and electrical repair services for motorcycles, cars, utes, 4WDs and light trucks, whether they are petrol or diesel. It also does warrant of fitness checks and tyres. Jacky is keen to put his stamp on the business and is stocking top quality oil and parts, with plans to eventually do wheel alignments. “I’d like to move towards being a very professional service with a clean and tidy workshop,” Jacky says. “I also plan to expand our range of tyres and become a specialist tyre supplier.” Jacky says he loves the NZ lifestyle with fewer people and stress, and especially the opportunity to go off-roading. But he does miss his mother’s cooking. “The family atmosphere at work is something I hope to retain,” he says.

A tangled web, including what appears to be a dispute over the lease, surrounds the fortunes of Paprika Indian restaurant in Stanmore Bay. The restaurant has been operating from Stanmore Bay Cottage for a year. The property, at 195 Brightside Road, was among the properties that were formerly part of the Masala restaurant chain and was sold at auction in June for $1.73 million. Hibiscus Matters understands that last week, on July 27, the new owner took possession and the following day erected a metal fence to effectively block access to Paprika restaurant.

Invive Spa

The opening of Invive Spa in Millwater will provide guests with an oasis of calm where they can nourish and reenergise. That’s the promise of owner Hayley Nithi who is hoping that the spa will help busy people bring some balance to their lives. “Regardless of your day-to-day activities, life can get chaotic,” Hayley says. “We all need time to disconnect, nourish and refuel. “At Invive, we have added wellness to everything we do and deliver an undeniable experience with every interaction. We aim to re-frame the ideals around what true beauty is and we strongly believe what you give your body from the inside is just as important as what you give your body from the outside.” Hayley moved to Millwater with her husband and young son two years ago. “We love it here. It’s friendly and supportive, and because Millwater is such a new community, people are creating such a welcoming and supportive vibe.” Hayley has taken her time to recruit therapists and yoga instructors who share the Invive vision. “My background is in human resources, mainly growing and developing leaders and talent in large organisations, so I see myself as the Invive navigator, who will help our team, who are experts in their industry, to do their best for each and every

Invive will reflect the very best of what I’ve learned through these experiences.” The spa will offer treatments (spa treatment packages, massage, facials, body wraps and body scrubs, hand and feet care, and waxing), as well as yoga sessions for small groups. “I took up yoga when I was pregnant and have experienced first-hand the benefits of incorporating yoga into my life. At Invive, we believe that wellness is influenced by variety so it is only natural yoga is part of our Invive story.” Hayley says she has put her “heart and soul” into Invive. “When someone takes the time to truly nourish themselves it has a ripple effect and everyone around them benefits – their family, friends and their community.”

Northern Arena in Silverdale, is negotiating the purchase of land in Warkworth to start development of a swimming pool facility by 2020. It is understood the privatelyowned site is near the Warkworth Showgrounds. Northern Arena director Matthew Saunders says details about the timeframe and design of the development will be released once the land is acquired. Earlier this year, Council reviewed five Expressions of Interest in the Warkworth pool project. Council’s head of active recreation Rob McGee says the list was narrowed down to three developers/pool providers regarding the opportunity to partner on a pool, but one company pulled out after follow-up discussions. He says Council is reviewing the finance mechanisms that might be available to fund potential Council investment. “A partnership approach will decrease

Council’s potential investment,” Mr McGee says. However, Mr Saunders says that although he is working with Council, he does not describe it as a partnership. “I doubt we will get any financial contribution from Council,” Mr Saunders says. “We envisage operating and maintaining the facility ourselves.” He says population growth and the area’s proximity to coastal areas makes a pool a high priority. “We already have a number of pupils who attend our Silverdale centre from Warkworth and some from as far away as Mangawhai. We are keen to get things moving as quickly as possible.” Northern Arena in Silverdale operates seven days a week and includes a gym facility. The community has been advocating for a pool for Warkworth for many years with more than half of submissions to the Rodney Local Board Plan 2011-2013 requesting a community pool.

The owner of Beach Pizza Orewa, Pranav Talati, knows that good things take time. In 2008, Pranav was packing shelves at the nearby supermarket. “I always felt that Orewa would be a good place to own a small business, but I didn’t have the experience or funds to make it happen right then,” he says. He went on to work for a major pizza chain in Auckland for 10 years where he learned everything he needed to know to set-up his own pizza shop in Beachlands a year ago. His dream of opening a shop in Orewa happened earlier this year and a third shop, in Christchurch, is on the drawingboard. “The 10 years that I worked in Auckland taught me everything I needed to know about costings, supplies and staff. But I could also see that there was a market for pizza using quality ingredients, which the chains can’t fulfil. “The shop I worked in was one of the busiest in New Zealand – it was nothing to sell more than 1000 pizza a day.” Manager Arpit Chawla says quality control is very important in ensuring that customers have a good experience. “We use fresh ingredients and as much local produce as possible,” he says. “We also oven-bake the fries, wedges, chicken bites and so on, which is a

Love Food Hate Waste Citrus is the star of winter. When not a lot else is in season, it is sweet, colourful and cheap. Citrus trees can produce big crops and many people who have them in their gardens are faced with the “problem” of how to eat it all! If you have a citrus tree, it is best to leave the fruit on the tree and pick as needed. Citrus can stay good for months on the tree and the longer the fruit stays on the tree, the sweeter it gets. If you have bought or been given citrus, keep it in the fridge until you want to eat it –it will last for a couple of weeks at least. Should you have more fruit than you can handle, contact your nearest branch of Community Fruit Harvesting. They collect excess fruit and turn it into preserves and cordials, which are donated to foodbanks. Making marmalade is a great way to preserve citrus for the coming year. The beauty of this recipe is that you can use any sort of citrus – limes, grapefruit, oranges, tangelos and so on, or mix them up for a wonderfully tangy spread. Keep the skin on the fruit so that nothing goes to waste.

Marmalade

Ingredients: About 1.6kg citrus fruit 1.5 litres (6 cups) water 2 lemons 1.25kg (5 cups) sugar Method: Cut fruit into quarters and slice finely. Put into a large bowl and cover with the water. Allow to stand overnight. Tip the fruit and water into a large pan, bring to the boil and simmer covered until the rind is very tender (40-60 minutes depending on how finely you have cut the rind). Add the sugar and stir until it has dissolved. Increase heat and boil uncovered until it gels when tested on a cold saucer. This will probably take at least 45 minutes. Pour into hot, sterilised jars and seal. The unopened jars will keep for up to a year. Recipe by Community Fruit Harvesting. More ideas for citrus at the website (above).

Age no barrier to hot rod grandfather They said it couldn’t be done so that was all the challenge that retiree Steve Clare, of Matakatia Bay, needed. The 70-year-old grandfather recently completed a two-and-a-half year labour of love, in the form of a 1968 Austin Mini ute with a V8 engine, named Wild Thing. The Mini was recently shown at the prestigious Teng Tools Grand National Rod & Custom Show in Auckland and at the beach Hop in Whangamata earlier in the year. “She’s a real people magnet – everyone who sees her, loves her,” Steve says. The idea of building a Mini with a V8 motor in the rear deck germinated many years ago in Steve’s imagination, but there was never time to do the project. It was only in retirement that he’s been able to turn his wild imaginings into a full metal reality. And much to his delight, he proved to his many critics who said it couldn’t be done, how wrong they were. “I’m really pleased with the result,” he says proudly. “She’s really lively to drive.” Steve says there is nothing like it in

NZ and although there will be other similar cars overseas, none will have the same particular specifications. “She’s a one-of-a-kind and doing the whole build ourselves was very satisfying.” Steve and son Ben, who also worked on the Mini, found the original vehicle in a wreckers yard in Henderson. Since then, the modifications have consumed countless hours and “tens of thousands” of dollars. The engine is a 1975 Leyland V8 with a Subaru Legacy radiator, Subaru Impreza gearbox, and custom made chassis. The rear cab panel from a Morris Minor ute was cut to suit and grafted onto the bodywork. “I love to to be busy and I’m a bit of a handyman, whether it is cars or houses, and all self-taught. I’d been thinking of the Mini idea for a long while, but it was really my wife Jill who got me started. She said I needed a project – I think her exact words were, ‘You’re always happiest when you are pottering in the shed’! “Age is just a number and I haven’t found transitioning from work to retirement difficult – not at all! I think keeping busy is the key.”

Before Clockwise from top, Retirement offered Steve the chance to prove the naysayers wrong. Wild Thing is a big hit with Steve’s grandsons, Charlie and Cooper.

Over the years, Steve has owned more than 34 road vehicles and 19 race vehicles. “I started racing go karts and then graduated to speedway saloons, stockcars, forumla Ford single seaters, sports racing cars and rallying.” He was runner-up for a national title in speedway saloons, missing out by

just 12 inches. Ben also doesn’t mind jumping behind the wheel and claimed a SS2000 title driving a Honda Vtec, which he and his Dad had worked on. Wild Thing is fully roadworthy so Coasters shouldn’t be surprised if they see it driving around the peninsula.

Rest homes consider pay A number of rest homes on the Hibiscus Coast and wider Rodney are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach to the pay equity settlement, which was announced in May and came into effect on July 1. The settlement covers 55,000 workers in aged and disability residential care and home and community support services around New Zealand. It prescribes pay increases from around $15.75 an hour to between $19 and $23.50. Although providers will receive additional funding towards offsetting the additional costs imposed by the legislation, NZ Aged Care Association chief executive Simon Wallace says the reality of the funding mechanism and its urgent implementation is leaving many members in jeopardy because they have had little time to adjust their business models. He says the actual funding will fall short of the Government’s long-stated intention to ‘fully fund’ the settlement. “Residents and their families who pay privately for care face an increase in their annual fees to the tune of up to $4500 – an outcome we pointed out earlier to Government, but regret that it has remained unfunded,” Mr Wallace says. “The Government chose not to fund these 25 percent or so of residents who are ‘private payers’ because they do not meet the Government’s asset and income criteria for fully subsided ‘rest home’ level care.” Waiwera’s Pinehaven Cottage partowner Lorraine Mann says is there is still a lot of uncertainty around the change. “There’s going to be a big wash-up in September when the Ministry of Health will have a better idea of the impact,” she says. “We’re anticipating that it is going to be hard for small rest homes. Pinehaven caters for 34 residents, and includes a dementia unit. It has 35 staff, most of whom are part-timers. Lorraine says the pay rise only applies to caregivers and activities people with other staff, such as cleaners and cooks, missing out. “I think we will see other unions bringing forward their pay cases soon.” She says staffing levels, service levels

and charges are all governed by the Ministry. “There’s very little room for us to move and that’s why the heaviest burden will fall on those who pay for care privately. Reducing services is not an option. I’m not saying the pay rise wasn’t justified, but it was a big hike so we will have to wait and see what the reality looks like. The huge profits you see posted for retirement villages do not reflect what’s going on at the small to medium rest homes. We work under a completely different business model.” The owner of Milton Court in Orewa and Leigh Road Cottage in Whangateau, Dennie Chiew, estimates that the difference between what the Ministry is covering and the actual wage cost per week is about $5000. “Plus, the cost of annual leave and lieu days haven’t been taken into account,” Dennie says. “Rest homes aren’t a business where you produce a lot of profit. It is getting harder and harder to operate sustainably and provide the best level of care possible.” Mr Wallace says smaller rest homes are most affected by the settlement, often in rural areas, as well as those run by welfare, trusts or religious based organisations. “In the past few weeks, we have been contacted by more than 100 members saying they’ll be financially disadvantaged and be forced to make staff redundant or cut back hours – surely the opposite intended outcome of the settlement. Others face closure. “The pending closures, reduction in staff hours and redundancies will hurt smaller communities and rural areas where rest homes provide sustainable and meaningful employment for people who might not otherwise have jobs. “From a resident perspective, it will reduce options for care and force some of our older and vulnerable citizens to move outside their communities and away from their friends and families to find suitable rest home care. We need to work with Government to ensure providers are supported in adjusting to the new environment with transitional support.”

DOTING ON YOUR DENTURES Dentures are a wonderful appliance, but like any device connected to the body, they require a little special care to last as long as possible and help keep your mouth healthy. Like teeth, dentures should be brushed daily. Rinse your dentures with cool water - hot water can warp their shape. Then, using a soft-bristled brush, gently remove any food deposits and plaque. It’s important to clean dentures carefully, to avoid bending any attachments or damaging them. Avoid regular toothpastes. They’re far too abrasive for dentures. Instead, always use products specially formulated to clean dentures, which we call denture cleansers. We recommend cleansers in tablet form; just drop them into a glass of warm water, and keep your denture in the solution overnight. It couldn’t be easier! Doing this has another practical benefit - it will prevent your dentures from drying out and changing shape. If you prefer cleaning your dentures in the morning, make sure to still keep them in a glass of water at night to prevent dryness. And keep them well out-of-reach of your dog, as many of our patients can attest! Fit is important with dentures. We recommend regular dental check ups to make sure your dentures still fit well, without any sore spots or loose areas. If you are unhappy with the fit of your dentures, please contact us, as this is easy to fix and not worth suffering through. Occasionally, denture wearers may like to use adhesives. These products come in many forms, so the type you choose is based on personal preference. We can also recommend appropriate cleansers and adhesives for you, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like some advice. If you have any questions about your dentures, or you’d like more information on the care of these amazing devices, contact us on 09 426 5262, and we’ll be happy to help you out!

Call Driving Miss Daisy and ride with a friend!

From left, Pearl Vince, Hazel Bowdler (aged 102) and her sister Meryl Wilson (90) at the Elderly People’s Luncheon Club last month.

30 year lunch tradition For around 30 years, an institution unique to the Hibiscus Coast has been providing the elderly with a chance to socialise and enjoy a hearty low-cost meal twice a month. The Hibiscus Coast Elderly People’s Luncheon Club was originally established by the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) and has no affiliation to any church or charity organisation. However, a number of organisations lend their support, including churches, schools and the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board. The club is run by a team of about 16 volunteers, many of whom are older than those receiving its benefits. It’s a bit of a hand-to-mouth existence, but Joan Roberts, who has been volunteering for 15 years, says the pleasure the participants get from the event makes it all worthwhile. “They love it,” she says. “One lady

is 102 years old and she comes along with her sister who is 90. Normally, we get around 40 to 45 people attending, although it does drop off a little in winter. The average age is around 75 years plus.” The club provides entertainment, as well as a hot two-course meal, for $5. Volunteers do the cooking and serving, and a raffle helps meet some of the costs. Transport can be provided if required. “We try to make each luncheon special and we always do something a little different for Christmas, mid-winter and Easter, as well as people’s birthdays. For some who come along, it can be their only outing in the fortnight.” The luncheon club meets in the Masonic Lodge, Centreway Road, on Mondays. For details of dates and times, phone Joan on 427 6263.

Driving Miss Daisy is a safe, friendly and reliable companion driving service for anyone. We can provide assistance for: Medical and other appointments • Family/social occasions Companionship outings • Take pets to the vet • Grocery or other shopping trips • Scenic drives • Airport departures and pick ups. All drivers are NZ Police checked, hold passenger ‘P’ licenses from the NZ Transport Agency and are first aid qualified, for your peace of mind. We are also an ACC Registered vendor and accept Total Mobility cards.

Stepping stone to adventure If you see an old grey-haired guy wandering up your street, don’t ring the nearest rest home. It’s probably me. I am, I’m proud to say, in training for a trek to Everest Base Camp in September. This is a long-held dream. I read Edmund Hillary’s Nothing Venture, Nothing Win as a teenager and, ever since, have wanted to walk in his footsteps. But Everest, really? Did you know that the highest point in Whangaparaoa is less than 500ft? And EBC is 17,600ft? How am I meant to prepare for this? Besides the physical exertion, there is 50 percent less oxygen at that altitude. I quickly came to the conclusion that my weekly stroll round the estuary wasn’t going to cut it. So now I walk 15 to 20km on a Sunday, and on Fridays, I go up and down the Wenderholm hill a couple of times. I’ve even invested in an exercycle as a wet weather option. Nobody is more amazed at my effort than I am. I get a bit bored going to the gym and my bung Achilles has ruled out my previous favourite sport, squash. On holiday I usually bury my nose in a book. But somehow I’ve found the drive to work really hard to achieve this goal. Which leads me to the question of motivation. We are always trying to encourage people to make positive health changes. Without a doubt the success or failure of that depends on the person’s internal motivation. And this Everest thing really matters to me. Not only have I paid money to get there, I desperately want to avoid the embarrassment of being carried off the mountain on a yak’s back. So I’m out pounding the streets, with my flash new pack that has so many straps, buckles, pockets and tabs that I had to consult Google to find out how to put it on. My particular regime is working because I’ve chosen an activity that is enjoyable in itself and because it gets me to a personal goal. If I can do it, I think anybody can. The key is to find something that you really want to do. And you know what? I’ve found the Hibiscus Coast is eminently walkable. There are great little beaches, footpaths, leafy streets and, best of all, the stunning panorama from the lookout at Shakespeare Park. It’s only 300ft above sea level, but for me it’s a stepping stone to adventure.

Elderly talents celebrated RECHARGE YOUR LIFE The theme of International Day of Older Persons on October 1 this year will be Stepping into the Future: Tapping the talents, contributions and participation of older persons in society. This year’s day will be about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families and communities. It will focus on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with an older person’s basic rights, needs and preferences. The theme underscores the link between tapping the talents and contributions of older persons and achieving the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing. Between 2015 and 2030, the number of older persons worldwide is set to increase by 56 per cent – from 901 million to more than 1.4 billion. By 2030, the number of people aged 60 and over will exceed that of young people aged 15 to 24.

Throw away your fiddly batteries and experience the simplicity of inductively rechargeable hearing devices.

The annual International Day of Older Persons is promoted by the United Nations and celebrated worldwide.

The 2017 theme will explore effective means of promoting and strengthening the participation of older persons in various aspects of social, cultural, economic, and civic and political life. It will support the message that noone will be left behind, and that it is starkly evident that the need to tap into the often overlooked and underappreciated contributions of older persons is not only essential to older persons’ well-being, but also imperative for sustainable development processes.

Volunteers wanted at North Shore Hospital

The volunteer network at North Shore Hospital is looking to the Hibiscus Coast for new recruits. Volunteer coordinator Genevieve Kabuya says the organisation had great support from people on the Coast and more are needed. “Hospitals can be stressful places and our volunteers can make the experience a little easier for people to deal with,” Mrs Kabuya says. “To be greeted with a smile and escorted to wherever you’re going – or to be comforted with a cup of tea can make a big difference.” Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of roles and are provided with training and a uniform. Info: phone Genevieve on 021 544 862.

Candidates seek grey vote The General Election is next month. Local Matters approached the seven main political parties with members in Parliament and asked them, “Why should older people vote for you?” The responses varied from swift and specific to last-minute and vague, or even nonexistent; here are the edited highlights, in alphabetical order …

ACT Party Beth Houlbrooke, candidate Housing affordability: ACT wants to address the crippling shortage of housing, which is pushing up prices, by: • Removing large cities from the Resource Management Act, and creating separate urban development legislation, prioritising land supply and reducing red tape for developers. • Incentivising councils to consent more land for development and build more infrastructure, by sharing a portion of GST levied on construction. • Getting councils out of the building standards process, replacing council building inspections and compliance with a mandatory private insurance regime for buildings. Sustainable Super: The present super arrangement is simply unsustainable. The only fair way to address this is to raise the age of entitlement, incrementally, over time, to 67. ACT proposes to do this from 2020–2032, by adding two months per annum to the age of entitlement.

The Green Party Barry Coates MP, spokesperson for Senior Citizens The Greens will defend NZ Super and ensure that it is supported by more funding for health care, a stronger aged care system, purpose-built affordable housing and better transport choices. The Green Party is working with Labour and Grey Power on an inquiry into aged care. There is an urgent need for an Aged Care Commissioner to champion the cause of aged care, and to investigate cases of neglect or abuse. This role should support accountability for rest homes and home care providers, including an accessible rating system, with feedback from patients. There needs to be adequate funding for health care. Government funding has not kept pace with the growing numbers of people needing care. This means the DHBs don’t have enough money to deliver aged care and 9 per cent of people are denied access to specialist care because they are on waiting lists or do not meet the criteria. We also need affordable and purposebuilt housing for those who don’t own their own home and as a transition between living at home and a rest home. It is important that these are available locally, in small towns and rural areas, not just in bigger cities. Our older citizens deserve better. They have rights to aged care as patients, and they have rights to dignity as valued members of our society.

Labour Party Marja Lubeck, Rodney candidate Many older people may be concerned that they, themselves or their kids, or grandkids, will never be able to own their own home. They may be concerned about the lack of access to healthcare and they may be among the 500,000 people in NZ who cannot afford to see a doctor, or on long hospital waiting lists. They may be concerned about their kids or grandkids being one of 90,000 young people not in education or training. They might be owning businesses that would welcome a more flexible tax system, or are hurting from unfair competition from bad employers. They may believe it is more fair that multinationals pay their fair share of tax. They may not want the superannuation age raised beyond 65. They may want our rivers and lakes swimmable again. They might be fed up with the congestion on our roads … and if they live in Rodney, believe that Hill Street intersection and Penlink should happen sooner rather than later. There are many more really good points in our policies, whether you’re a young, young at heart or older voter. Maori Party Erena Temara, senior executive assistant to Marama Fox Unfortunately, the leaders unit is under considerable constraint at this stage and unable to complete the inquiry … we have at least a two-week turnaround period.

The current information online is available at www.maoriparty.org/policies New Zealand First Winston Peters MP, leader New Zealand First wants all seniors to stay independent as long as they can. They have paid taxes all their lives and are entitled to services to help them stay in their own homes. Too many older New Zealanders miss out on healthcare under the heavy demand on the health system, which has worsened as immigration has poured over 73,000 net into NZ each year. None of the public services have been boosted in line with this population growth. Superannuation and its future is a huge concern for all retirees, but NZ First will demand the universal nonmeans test super eligibility age stays at 65. National has decided to raise the age to 67. NZ Super is affordable as long as we increase productivity. We must also restart contributions to the NZ Superannuation Fund which National has stopped – meaning $17 billion has been lost, reducing the nest egg that was supposed to cushion increased demand for super. Another concern is that NZ gives immigrants full super at 65 after they have been here only 10 years. NZ First’s NZ Superannuation (Fair Residency) Bill will require a person to have lived in the country for 25 years. National Party No response received by our deadline. United Future No response received.

Getting your entitlements Some people might say there are few benefits in getting older, but one thing is for sure – absolutely everyone should be checking to make sure they are getting any and all the specialist state benefits they are entitled to. For many people, that simply means NZ Super, the universal government pension to which all NZ citizens and permanent residents who normally live here are entitled at age 65, regardless of how much they earn from paid work, savings and investments, other assets owned or taxes paid. All eligible people have to do is apply to Work & Income (WINZ) three months before they turn 65. The current standard rate varies from just over $300 per week for married people, where both partners qualify, to $390.20 for a single person living alone. The same rates apply to NZ Veterans’ pensions, and all recipients automatically receive a SuperGold Card entitling them to a range of discounts and special offers. However, seniors may also be entitled to financial help with housing costs, paying rates, and health, medical or disability costs. WINZ can also help with emergency or unforeseen costs, through advance payments or special grants, residential care home costs, and childcare costs for seniors who are the main caregiver of a dependent child. The main benefits and entitlements are summarised in a 36-page brochure, Services for Seniors, which can be dowloaded and viewed online via

www.seniors.msd.govt.nz. There are also a range of benefits and entitlements for older people in need of financial assistance aged between 55 and 64. According to WINZ, at the end of June 2017, there were a total of 61,923 people aged 55 to 64 in receipt of a main benefit. Of these, the majority were receiving either Jobseeker Support or Supported Living Payment, with a small number receiving Sole Parent Support. “For those looking for work, we provide all of our usual employment support services,” Ministry of Social Development media advisor Raewyn Jones says. “We also offer redundancy support for anyone impacted by this.” Details of all benefits available and who is eligible are available online at www.workandincome.govt.nz, or call the WINZ Contact Centre – the general enquiries number, for those under 65, is 0800 559 009 and the Seniors’ general enquiries line is 0800 552 002. The Contact Centre team can provide advice over the phone and, if required, arrange appointments.

Darts youth on target

When Paddy Waugh watched Scottish player Robert Thornton win the World Grand Prix of Darts on TV in 2015, he was inspired to take up the sport. “He was the underdog and that’s what I loved about it,” Paddy says. Since then the dartboard in his Waitoki shed has been getting a good workout. The Orewa College student recently entered his first national competition – the NZ Junior & Youth Darts Championships, held in Wellington last month – where he came third in the singles and men’s pairs and was runner up in mixed pairs. Plenty of bait options The water temperature has dropped to about 13-14°C in the Hauraki Gulf and there has been some pretty exciting fishing in deeper water around Flat Rock and out in the middle of the Gulf, particularly the area about five miles south of Little Barrier. Big snapper and kingfish are in feeding in the work ups that occur when the whales and dolphins round up schools of pilchards. The gannets are the prime indicator for finding these work ups so keep your eyes peeled for them diving. Just about any bait, soft bait or lure, will work when this frenzied action is happening and the recent advent of sinking stick baits is certainly gaining momentum and producing great results. I prefer to use a spinning reel on a light stick bait rod of about 7-8ft long. This allows long casts and a natural descent of the lure through the water. The kingfish love them as do the bigger snapper and kahawai that are not far below the feeding dolphins and pilchard schools. There is a huge range of colours to choose from brands like Nomad, Fish Inc and Savage Gear. As the water cools further, this activity may decrease and the fishing seem to slow down. This is where drift fishing reefs, with soft baits or the tried and proven method of anchoring and berleying up while you float big baits back into the reef, comes into play. There are little tweaks you can make to your tackle to improve your catch rate over the colder months when the fish are not feeding as ravenously. Switching down to lighter leader works, but you do run the risk of losing big fish in the reefs so I switch to a fluorocarbon leader. Fluorocarbon has good knot strength, high abrasion resistance and is near-invisible in the water. Changing to circle hooks too can help when the fish are a little shy. Allow the fish to run and then slowly raise the rod tip to set the hook. The hook will almost always set in the corner of the mouth, which allows for an easier removal and safe release of a fish if you wanted. Just like with soft baiting, it pays to take a selection of baits. Often one bait will out fish another and, likewise, with soft bait colours and actions. Colours I like to use over the winter are New Penny, yellows and I always pack a pack of ZMan “Motor Oil” as it just seems to produce fish when things go a bit quiet. When it comes to baits, then fresh is best but not always available so I pack pilchards, mullet and squid as the staples but as TopCatch has about 20 varieties of bait we are spoilt for choice so can switch things up and try piper, sanma, baby mullet, koheru and another good bait and many an anglers favourite, bonito. Get a good flow of berley happening and float baits back down your berley trail. In strong current you may need to weight the baits with a small ball sinker to get them down to the reef. Wrap up warm and enjoy the weather windows for good winter fishing.

Sara Spurr won Honours at last month’s club night with this shot. She was amazed to see literally hundreds of old vehicles in varying states of decay sprawling across the land at Horopito Motors near Ohakune. The site was used in the films Smash Palace and The Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Sara found the colours, shapes and textures of the vehicles fascinating and wondered about the stories the cars could tell of times gone by. She used High Dynamic Range and filters to achieve the effects.

Teen takes big steps forward

Gulf Harbour teenager Maddison Bradley was awarded the top prize of Overall Merit Award (Most Improved) at a Blue Light Life Leadership course held in Taupo last month. The 15-year-old beat a strong group of young people from throughout the North Island to take the prize on the week-long residential course. Blue Light Life Skills coordinator Hannah Ward commented that Maddison had showed “significant and consistent improvement in attitude, self-discipline, self-confidence, team work and was always respectful to staff and fellow course members ”. The programme is run by NZ Blue Light in partnership with the NZ Police and NZ Defence Force. It provides 14–17-year-olds with life and leadership skills and training.
