01. Bobbin & Thread Software: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop Bobbin & Thread is a sewing center and textile repurposing hub, which teaches all levels of sewing skills, helps reduce textile waste by collecting donations, and makes eco-friendly fabrics and sewing machines easily accessible. For beginner to advanced level sewers, this center promotes acquiring sewing skills between different generations. This facility is a creative environment for users to learn about sustainability and advancing their sewing skills.

Neutral colors used throughout with minimal pops of color allows users of Bobbin & Thread to fill the space with different personalities and colors from the various projects underway. Furniture in gathering areas will resemble the feeling of being wrapped in a blanket to create the balance of a calm learning environment. Through the use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and metal in contrast with soft upholstered textures convey a wholesome feeling. Areas for gathering are open concept, to emphasize and encourage a collaborative environment.

Entry/Reception Area

A quilt symbolizes family and story-telling. Traditionally, scraps of used clothing from different family members are stitched together to form a narrative. Quilting has been a way of encouraging communal bonding, passing on skills, and opening the mind to endless creativity. Inspired by the quilt, the concept of Bobbin & Thread is to bring the community of sewers together in a relaxed working environment.

02. HAWK Treffpunkt Software: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop HAWK Treffpunkt is a collaboration project completed in Germany with two other international students majoring in Architecture. Our project was to transform an existing abandoned morgue building on HAWK University campus into a building which students and teachers can use. HAWK Treffpunkt is a student association building to plan events for HAWK University, a space for students to work, and also welcomes the public to view students completed works. Inspired by a hot air balloon, the concept of HAWK Treffpunkt is to create a space which encourages the community to come together and set new personal goals. A hot air balloon represents working towards new goals and personal growth. Taking inspiration from the bright colors of the balloons in contrast to the subtle shades as it floats through the sky, creates a contrast of warmth and excitement. As a protected building, the challenge was incorporating elements and rooms which were unable to be modified or removed. Another element of this project is to add an extension building to the existing protected building. Credits: Pedro Cremonese | Brazil | HAWK Julia Brandstäter | Germany | HAWK

Sustainability

03. Embodied Energy, Life Cycle Analysis & Human + Environmental Factors Skills: Hand Drafting, Hand Rendering, Photoshop Ants have been around for over 100 million years with over 12,000 identified ant species in the world. Ants play an important role in the environment turning and aerating the soil, allowing water and oxygen to reach plant roots. They eat a wide variety of organic material and provide food for many different organisms. Working in pairs to redesign BCIT’s student cafeteria, this project was to apply different sustainable initiatives and using environmentally friendly materials to become a LEED certified building and meeting the Living Building Challenge standards. This project required an extensive amount of research which was very beneficial in broadening my knowledge in sustainable design. Sustainable initiatives included: • Food/cutlery composting • Intensive green roof with rooftop garden • Living green wall • Rainwater harvesting pond • Grey/black water treatment • Photovoltaics • Light shelves • Stack effect • Geo-thermal exchange Credits: Emily Wong | BCIT

Environmentally friendly materials: • Linoleum • Bamboo • American clay • Hens and chicks • Milk paint • Beetle kill pine • Linen fabric • Hemp fabric • Paperstone

04. Salicaceae Senior Living Software: AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop The willow tree is a symbol of growth, balance, and stability. The long branches blow through the wind so effortlessly by the water. A large trunk with soft leaves encompasses strength and development. The significance of the willow tree represents life; to create a space using different textures and colors, flexibility with seating arrangements, and organic lines will create a relaxing yet uplifting environment. The concept for this space is to create an environment which brings life and the feeling of empowerment. Using natural materials, bringing in nature, and incorporating a harmony within every space will promote stability and create a healthy environment for the elderly to live in. A double height open area with large windows from floor to ceiling will provide an abundance of natural light and a view of the garden. The large windows will create a flow into the space from outside in which will give the elderly a sense of independence by having fluidity all around. Natural materials such as wood and metal will be used to represent the base of the willow tree. The branches to the tips of the leaves, willow leaves will hang from the opening from the second floor, creating a vertical plane drawing the eye upwards to a grander space creating the feeling of empowerment.

One of the main challenges faced with this project was accommodating for all types of users in a senior living home. An extensive amount of research was completed to ensure color choices and materials were suitable providing a pleasant and welcoming living environment.

Dining Room

Neutral colors such as beige and whites with a pop of green will create a welcoming environment to interact in. Allowing the elderly to navigate freely and complete tasks on their own will promote a nourishing and growing space.
