2010 NCAA Division II Football Weekly Super Regional (Selection Region) Rankings Worksheet Guidelines Selection Requirements. In order to be considered during the selection process, a team must: • Have an overall won-lost record of .500 or better against Division II opponents; • Play at least eight Division II opponents during the regular season (an institution may submit a waiver request to the football committee if a given institution is not able to satisfy this requirement); • Play at least 10 opponents during the regular season. An institution may submit a waiver request to the football committee for their consideration if a given institution is not able to satisfy this requirement. Bylaw 31.3.3.1 – Countable Competition. For NCAA team-championship selection purposes, competition is countable only when the teams played are varsity intercollegiate teams of four-year, degree-granting institutions that conduct a majority of their competition in that team sport against varsity intercollegiate teams (see Constitution 3.2.4.4) of four-year, degree-granting institutions located in Canada and the United States, its territories or possessions. Competition against service teams, professional teams, semiprofessional teams, amateur teams, two-year colleges and club teams shall be excluded. Selection Criteria. The following criteria shall be employed by a governing sports committee in selecting participants for NCAA championships competition [Reference: Bylaw 31.3.3 in the NCAA Manual; Criteria for Selection of Participants]: • Won-lost record; • Strength of schedule; • Availability of student-athletes for NCAA championships, and; • Nullification. In addition to Bylaw 31.3.3, the Division II Football Committee has received approval from the Division II Championships Committee to consider the following criteria in the selection of at-large teams for the Division II Football Championship (not necessarily in priority order): Primary Criteria. • In-region Division II won-lost results; • Overall Division II won-lost results (winning percentage and total of Division II wins and losses); • Overall Division II strength-of-schedule (SOS) (opponents’ average winning percentage-weighted 2/3 and opponents’ opponents’ average winning percentage-weighted 1/3); • Head-to-head competition; • Results versus common opponents; • Results against Division II teams greater than .500; • Overall won-lost results; • Division II won-lost results (games won-cumulative results of opponents; and games lost-cumulative results of opponents); • Results against Division II teams less than or equal to .500; and • Results versus non-Division II opponents. Tie-Breaking Procedures. If the evaluation of the primary criteria does not result in a decision, the tie-breaking procedures will be reviewed. All the criteria listed below will be evaluated (listed in priority order). • Head-to-head competition; • Results against common opponents; • Overall Division II Won-Lost Results (winning percentage and total of Division II wins and losses); • Overall Division II Strength-of-Schedule (SOS).
Please note that this information above will be calculated for teams with a .500 or better Division II wonlost record. The evaluation of a team’s Division II won-lost results will be weighted equally with the Division II SOS. Additionally, input is provided by regional advisory committees for consideration by the football committee. Effective for the 2010 championship, all Division II sports committees are no longer required to conduct a follow-up call with all respective regional advisory committee members in a given selection region before making a final decision during the selection call. The national committee must notify the respective regional advisory committee members of the changes prior to public release. Notification may be sent via e-mail. Coaches’ polls and/or any other outside polls or rankings are not used as a selection criterion by the football committee for selection purposes. Miscellaneous Information. The top 10 teams in each of the four super regionals (selection regions) will be ranked based on the aforementioned selection criteria on a weekly basis, beginning with the week of November 1. Rankings will continue each week until the final super regional rankings are released on November 15. Each of the four regional advisory committees will make their recommendations each week regarding the rankings to the Division II Football Committee. Each regional advisory committee co-chair will prepare the rankings worksheet each week and provide this information to all national committee members, plus the NCAA championship manager. The regional advisory committee co-chair for each super regional will present the worksheet and the top 10 teams selected with the rationale provided to the committee on the national committee teleconference. The national committee will then discuss the selections and vote to either accept or modify the recommendations presented from each super regional. The committee is required to thoroughly evaluate each criterion and not simply look at the numerical indicators. The committee is responsible for reviewing the information objectively; however, it is sometimes necessary to reverse objective information based on mitigating circumstances (e.g., head-tohead competition). It should be noted that the deliberations of all regional advisory committees and national committee meetings are strictly confidential.
