LIVING ROOM

Bill Hope is an artist living in Katoomba. He is recognised as one of Australia’s leading contemporary illustrators and his practice spans children’s books, technical drawing, commercial illustration and live events. Driven by a passion for traditional drawing, his fine art practice provides creative freedom to pursue his own explorations of place, aesthetics and the human condition.

“Drawing is a wonderful way to see things in a new light. When drawing a room, you notice all the little bits and pieces that may have slipped into the background. You see how many objects there are lying about. You realise how big some things are and how small others are, and hopefully, you observe how the room makes you feel.”

Living Room considers the emotional connection we develop with our built environment and the meaning we give to the places we spend our time. Some of the pictures ask us how we feel at work, others, how we feel in our community and lastly, they inquire as to how we feel within the confines of our own head. Hope explores the township of Katoomba and the relationships we all have with our built environment and intimate spaces. Using architecture as a metaphor for the mind, the artist asks the viewer to re-examine their own relationship to their environment.
