1.2 Myto Map

In terms of the character's MYTO maps, we overlayed them and found out the areas are mainly THEIRS, which shows the site currently lacks a sense of belonging. We need to find out the areas where are strongly related to the character's feelings of OURS and MINE. The aim is to improve the intensity of the community by developing the areas where are more representative of our characters. Besides, we overlapped the daily routines of our characters and found out most of them only come here for work and leave after work. The strategy is to integrate the two ways above to choose three more related areas for our characters, which shows in a dotted circle. Based on those three potential areas, we made a red circle to identify the entrances to those areas.

1.5 SWOT Analysis

• • • •

Easy to access to river don Mix of people working there Good traffic network Many ways of entrance from different districts

SWOT • The site is an entrance to Kelham island. Could signift the area identity • Adding more green spaces and pocket parks • Residential could put ‘eyes on the street’ and bring community

• No direct pathway to access from Mowbray Road to Burton Road • Lack of green spaces • Lack of gathering spaces • Lack of streetscape design • No/Limited residential • Shortages at restaurants/coffee shop • Big roads, traffic and excessive parking make the streets feel unwelcoming • Many industrial workshops

• Flooding from the Don • Gentrification • Fast traffic speed makes the area unsafe

• • • • •

Openings in the street present intrigue and opportunity. Arches are a distinctive design detail which feel characteristic of the site. Flat facades score low, as they do not show opportunity for people to occupy or interact. The river is the most interesting and exciting feature of the area. Modern materials such as PVC and steel painted grey are uninspiring, as compared to the sandstone arches or red brick.

Design Strategy • • • •

Open up the river. Reward people’s curiosity about openings in the streetscape. Give them somewhere to go. Break up facades and create opportunities for appropriation. Expand the use of arches throughout the design.

How materially articulate is the segment? (Eg set-backs; steps; walls; opening; signs; benches etc)

Movement/ Flow Thresholds Social Space indoor Social Activity

2.1 1:50 Strategy Plan

Precedent Study 01- Union Street Urban Orchard The Union Street Urban Orchard was a temporary project located in a derelict site in Bankside, London. It was built by volunteers and organised around a festival which celebrated and educated urban agriculture. Using recycled materials, the project demonstrated how a large, semi-private space can be designed to facilitate gathering, learning and socialising. The materials are informal and messy, inferring a sense of temporality and creativity. The space is structured in a way that encourages curiosity and interaction. This project also highlights the power of food in bringing people together in urban spaces that can otherwise be alienating and impersonal. Design Principles: • • •

Large spaces can be broken up to make people feel more comfortable and enhance a sense of intrigue. Breaking out from the walls and messing up the edges allows for temporary and organic ownership. Vegetation creates space and energises a location. Signature vegetation (e.g. food) gives a place identity.

Precedent Study 02 - Souq Waqif, Doha The Souq Waqif in Doha is the city’s only pedestrian-dedicated zone. The arches create a streetscape which plays with the indoor and outdoor, blurring the boundaries and creating permeability in the street scene. Pedestrians are pulled in to see the market traders wares, and have the option to retreat from the climate and the large, moving crowds. Balconies provide viewing platforms. The materials are traditional and culturally sensitive, making it a heritage site in a fast-developing city. Design Strategy Principles: • Different elevation levels can create distinct experiences whilst being part of the over all scene. Someone on the first floor can be connected to the hustle and bustle without having to commit to the crowd. • Blurring indoor and outdoor creates opportunities for different experiences. Maximising and catering for a greater number of activities makes it more likely people will linger.

Souq Waqif, Doha

Lower Stable Street, London THE COOLEST LITTLE HIGH STREET IN LONDON THIS LITTLE STREET was created as an designled cultural hub in King Cross. I t includes a mix of long-term tenancies that helping to improve the sense of communitiy in the beautiful bricked arches - alongside the pop - up shops, experimental projects and workshops. Meanwhile, the streets will hosts different exhibitions, fairs, markets and events in every weekend. The outdoor space was designed to connect the retail units and enlivening the street space to encourange the visitors to stay and relax.

Precedent Study 04 Hybrid Thresholds Lower Don River Proposal (Toronto) This proposed design for the Lower Don River in Toronto uses platforms which extend out onto the river bank. They expand the public realm whilst being sensitive to the ecology of the river. By bringing people to the river, they are immersed in the natural environment. Design Strategy Principles: • Riverbanks are rich aesthetic environments which can be permeated for the benefit of people, with minimal cost to the ecosystem. • Staggered approaches, using walkways, drop-downs and platforms, create excitement and enhance a sense of immersion.

2.4 Model Development I can’t park here anymore, but more people can join our outdoor activities since there is more space now. I have had more customers since they made changes to the courtyard. I’m happy about having a car-free public area but I still feel quite exposed in the courtyard. I wouldn’t want to spend time there with other people.

Adding a pergola to soften the hard edge of the main building. By introducing trees in the courtyard area to create a dynamic flow.

Car-free public space to encourage activities and events.

I love how dynamic the courtyard has become! It’s full of life compared to what it was before. The orchard gives me ideas for my new project!

Someone asked me to join the volunteer in the orchard. I’ve never done gardening before, but it sounds fun. I might join them.

I never thought orchard could be cool. I actually would want to hang out with my firends here. I meet my friends here sometimes. I really like the feeling of being surrounded by plants. They calm me down.

Break down the huge car park by placing moveable planting beds and dwarf fruit trees to form serveral smaller spaces instead of one big one. To create a more intimate and different spatial experience.

Meanwhile, the other corner is public seating area. People can chat with friends and take rest here. As the whole area, it bring the feeling of “advanture”.

As a member of climbing association, I can organise some climbing courses to promote this sport. I am happy that we have got enough sitting area near the climbing wall. The seperated space near the staircase can be the gathering point to my climbing courses.

3.3 Flower and Book Shops Area

What a great view from here.

Diverse semse of space This area dispatched to pubilc, semi-public and private spaces. High street is a public space which can direct to the river side at the end of the pedestrian path. The area with tables and chairs is semi-public space in front of bookshop and flower shop. People can read and chat over there or walk to the arcade directly. Bookshop and flowershop is private space, people can still get in buy some stuffs and hot drinks.

I am blessed we have one bookshop nearby, I turely love reading. I can read in front of the bookshop or roof garden

upstair.

In and out of spacial experience The arch is an edge between open area and cover area. It create an in and out experience when people walk into the arcade or walk out from the arcade. Roof garden There is a roof garden on the second floor of the buildings, people can plant the food and have a private gathering space over there. It distinguish the environment between the front door and roof of the buildings. Front door area is noisy, open. Roof of the building is quiet and hidden. It can protential connect to the balcany in second floor of the buildings nearby.

There are more shops ahead.

It is great I can use WIFI here.

The air is full with scent of flowers

3.4 Arcade Entrance This is the entrance of the high street, with Miya’s photography studio on the 1st floor and a quick meal kitchen on the ground floor. Introducing a new route from the bookshop to the studio, connecting the balcony with the roofs to create a spatial sequence from private to public.

I feel like it’s easier to seal the deal, when we are in the reading corner instead of our studio.

The archway provides a focus vision of the riverside on the ground floor, intended to draw attention and encourage the movement down to the river edge. It blurs the spatial boundry of indoor and outdoor; private and public.

3.4 Riverside Microenvironment

Location Plan The riverside area is an opportunity of reveal. People are drawn through the alley - intimate, intense and intriguing - and emerge into a open space with views of heritage buildings and natural beauty. This microenvironment is an expression between those two spatial realities - enclosed and open. The ground floor is a much more social and dynamic space, where people can transition easily between being tucked away and being out in the open. The first floor is a quiet, reflective zone, where people can still be connected to the urban life whilst maintaining personal space. On both floors, the relationship between indoor and outdoor is blurred through the material intervention. The yoga and multi-faith studio on the first floor uses glass to break down the barrier between ‘in’ and ‘out’. Archways create cloisters, containing and present a tunnel effect, but always with the option to hop out to take the sky as the roof. Multiple social needs are catered, and people’s curiosity is rewarded for travelling through the site to reach the ultimate destination.

3.5 Riverside Microenvironment

If I ever have a creativity block, I just come here. The people at the Coffee and Craft place are always up for a chat and a doodle. Or the river helps to clear my head.

This is my favourite bit of this site. Sometimes I get shy around people and it’s nice to have the option to sit on a personal platform, or go up to the first floor for a bit of privacy.

3.6 Restaurnt And Ice Cream Shop Ground Floor Based on 1:20 Physical Model

Betula what a nice view, I can take lots of beautiful photos
