Bobby and Dandy is a quaint
vintage boutique situated in Hove. This has got to be one of the better vintage stores in Brighton and Hove, but is surprisingly unknown by many who live locally to the area. It is clearly a well organised and beautifully presented shop. The quality of the design and fabrics of these vintage garments should definitely be noted. Selling both men and women vintage fashion, Bobby and Dandy have managed to hand pick classic as well as wacky pieces from all eras. For women, the variety of dresses here is incredible. One can choose from a section of prints, colours and textures that can be suited for all occasions. Due to the organised nature of the shop, it is an appealing stop for passes by who can enjoy an effortless browse, which does not often come hand in hand when shopping for vintage. If you are looking for a winter fur, a new purse, or simply a interesting vintage garment, this is the place to come.

CAMDEN STABLES MARKET One of London’s largest weekenD tourist attractions, the stables market offers a range of retro and vintage fashion. With over 450 shops and stalls selling unique items from accessories and jewelry to furniture and clothing.
A great stall to check out is ‘Brian’s Classic Luggauge etc’. Filled with arty retro suitcases and electric mix of cameras, sportswear, telephones & typewriters some great buys can be found here.
The stables market is rich in culture and life, its individuality and spirit makes it a popular shopping destination in London. Walking round the stables one can get lost in the vast retro wonderland. Packed with all sorts of retro gems, there are also some awesome places to grab a drink and listen to some live music. There is also a great selection of exotic food stalls to work your way through. The stables market has a fascinating history to it. Dating back from Victorian times, the market’s name originated from its previous life as a horse hospital, where injured horses would come for treatment. In the 1970s the idea to use Camden area as a market place was developed and the boom of the market attracted more and more stalls to the area. Since then, the stables market has to be regarded as one of the busiest and most successful markets in London. As well as the stables market, there is also a Camden Lock Market nearby which also sells some interesting clothing and accessories at cheap prices.

Sophie Rafalowska Sophie Rafalowska is a young and talented seamstress specialising in 1950’s style corsets. What is your background? My mother has an antique foot pedal powered Singer sewing machine so she started teaching me how to sew at quite a young age, initially making clothes for my dolls and toys. I studied textiles through secondary school and at A Level and after that continued to sew throughout university, setting up the Sussex University Sewing Society and working as a pattern cutter for Louise O’Mahony after an internship at Brighton Fashion Week. When and why did you start designing bodices? I initially started making 1950s-style full dresses when I was about 16, but I kept detatching the skirts so that I could mix and match the outfits. When I got to university lots of friends and people on nights out admired the bodices, and I started getting requests, so Sophie’s Darling Designs was born! Do you design and make any other items? I also make turban style head bands in the same or corresponding fabrics to the tops and I’m thinking about expanding the range of hair wear to decorate 50s victory rolls. I also make pencil and full circle skirts and I am currently dabbling with different styles of 1940s and ‘50s tops, all of which will be included in my summer collection. Where does your inspiration come from?
How do you choose and source the right material to bring your designs to life? I strive to use 100% cotton where I can and also like to buy my fabric in small quantities so that each design retains a degree of uniqueness. I source most of my fabric from the wealth of small and independent fabric shops that we have in Brighton. I enjoy browsing and hoping that something wonderful will just jump out at me. Some of my most popular prints have been remnants found at studio sales or even on eBay. How much time goes into the creation of each bodice? Each individual bodice takes between three to five hours to make, dependent on whether I am drafting up a bespoke pattern or using one of my standard blocks. I also spend a lot of time experimenting to make sure that each new fabric is up to scratch and wont warp or shift when wearing. What are your plans for 2014? The first photo shoot of the year has already taken place and I’m currently looking to supply an independent London shop, as well as launching a website. I’m working on my summer collection now, which I am looking forward to releasing in the spring.
I take most of my inspiration from the silhouettes of the 1940s and ‘50s. I have a collection of vintage compendiums and old family photos from the era that I refer to regularly. As a curvier girl I never felt comfortable in the Kate Moss style skinny jeans and as I got a bit older I discovered the incredible things 1950s style does for the female figure. More recently I’ve been taking inspiration from the crop tops and bra-lets that have been appearing on the high street, which are often lovely but too revealing and badly made.

The Victorian warehouse ‘Blitz’ located just
off Brick Lane is a must go to shop if you are into vintage and find yourself in the area. The vast emporium is crawling with vintage gems from fashion to furniture. There is a wide ranging selection of both clothes and accessories in excellent condition. If you are looking for 90s skate punk and grunge style then there are some classic pieces that can be found in this place. One of the highlights of Blitz is the fantastic vintage kimono selection, although slightly more expensive than the other items it is not common to come across such a great range of kimonos at your fingertips.
Its organized layout makes it quick and effortless to find a ready to wear outfit, which is usually a rarity when hunting for vintage. In addition to the clothes , the retro funirture, posters and unusual trinkets are quirky acessories for your home. As far as price goes, Blitz is reasonably priced, although probably not the place to go if you are looking for a bargain. However, if you are looking for a unique high quality clothing Blitz is definitely the one for you.
