FURRY FRIENDS Help Your Pet Feel at Home on Vacation

Help Your Pet Feel at Home on Vacation By NewsUSA

Families, when planning their vacations, are often looking to bring along a very important guest: the family pet.

According to a recent survey from Petplan Pet Insurance, more than 78 percent of pet owners say they take their pet with them on vacation. If you’re among the travelers adding pet-friendliness to your list of accommodation must-haves, consider staying in a vacation rental to make vacationing with your furry friend as seamless as possible.

Vacation rentals offer many of the advantages of home, like fully equipped kitchens, multiple bedrooms, more space and privacy all-around. For pets used to having plenty of space, vacationing in a typical 325-square-foot hotel room might leave them feeling cramped. The average vacation rental is 1,850 square feet, giving you, your family and your pet enough space to spread out in during your stay. When you arrive, let your pet explore

the rental and sniff around outdoors to help them adapt to the new space.

Vacation rentals can also help maintain some of the familiarity and routine pets crave. If your pet is used to sleeping in the living room, or their bowls are typically in the kitchen, they can still enjoy those comforts while away. Bring some of your pet’s favorite toys and blankets along to help make your rental feel even more like home.

In addition to more room inside, many vacation rentals offer private outdoor space. Some even have large decks and fenced-in backyards, creating ideal vacation space for travelers with pets, whether you’re barbecuing outside or letting your pet get some fresh air in-between attractions.

When booking your accommodations, ask about any added services or amenities that may help your pet feel more comfortable on vacation. For example, Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professionally managed vacation rentals company, greets furry guests in some of its properties with common pet necessities and temporary ID tags for their collars.

SECURE Act Causing Mistakes!

In December Congress passed the SECURE Act. The Act significantly changed how retirement assets are treated after your death. A lot of articles and information has been circulated about the impact of this new legislation. Unfortunately, much of this information, and the recommended changes, is inaccurate and does not consider all of the options.

One of the responses to this new law was to dismiss using a protective trust as a beneficiary for your retirement plan. Protective trusts provide advantages for your family, and directing your retirement plan to those trusts is an effective planning tool. If designed correctly there will be no difference in the income tax outcome. When adjusting for a change in the law, remember the results you hoped to obtain through your estate plan. Then design and implement the strategies to address the tax change with that in mind. While the new act did increase taxes, the changes to the law did not create a situation that requires you to abandon your goals and objectives.

Anyone who has retirement plan assets should meet with their knowledgeable estate planning attorney and update their estate plan and how they handle their retirement plans. If someone is telling you shouldn’t leave a retirement plan to a trust because of significant tax impact, they are simply wrong. There are simple techniques available, and some may actually increase the amount your family receives.

DEFINE DESIGN YOUR OWN

By Family Features

Spring is the perfect time to clean, freshen up, and create a new atmosphere in your home. You don’t need to purchase new furniture or expensive decor in order to spruce up your environment. With Scotch tape, some paint and some ingenuity, you can add exciting new designs to your home for less money. Explore these ideas to help spark creativity for your next project.

MAKE A STATEMENT There was a time when it was considered daring to paint one wall in a room a different color. However, these days, statement walls are replacing the subtler accent wall. A wall filled with geometric shapes or a colorful pattern is an eye-catching enhancement that can be added to just about any space. Instead of purchasing a painting or photograph to hang on your wall, consider using your own creativity to make a unique statement wall, either with repeating patterns or abstract shapes.

Call Today to Advertise: 720-889-3300 | The Broomfielder ™ | March 2020 Scotch Painter’s Tape partnered with Matt W. Moore to create this welcoming and colorful mural at a New Orleans based organization for young artists. In cities across the country, vibrant murals reflect a growing trend toward a more adventurous design. It’s a style that you can easily adapt and make your own with existing decor elements that are already in your home.

REVAMP FURNITURE Refinishing old furniture is an affordable way to outfit a newly designed room. For an on-trend look, invite some visual interest with patterns. You might choose a single color stripe to contrast a lighter or darker hue, or create a pattern using shapes like circles or diamonds. Side tables, dressers, dining tables and entertainment centers are perfect options to spice up a room. If you’re concerned that you won’t like the change, consider using a water-soluble, washable paint first to make sure you are happy with the pattern before applying a permanent coat.

CONSIDER ACCENT PIECES Paint embellishment doesn’t have to be limited to hard surfaces; textiles can also benefit from a bold paint makeover. Accent pieces like pillows or lamp shades are easy places to add colorful designs on a small scale that can easily be swapped out if and when you’re ready for a new look. Again, you can use a simple strip with a pop of color, or you can opt for repeating patterns such as chevron or circles. If you are feeling really creative, you can attempt more complicated designs such as palm trees, pineapples or mountain images. Just be sure to use paint suitable for fabric.

PRO TAPING TIPS • Make sure the surface is clean, dry and dust-free so the tape sticks properly.

• Apply tape directly on the surface, pressing down as you go without stretching the tape.

• Press down firmly with a smooth edge to secure the tape.

• Let the tape set for about 30-60 minutes before painting.

• Wait until the paint is dry to the touch before removing the tape.

• Use a putty knife or razor blade to score along the edge of the tape to help prevent cracking along the paint line.

• Lift tape slowly by pulling it back on itself then removing at a 45-degree angle.

RAISED BED GARDENING ON THE FRONT RANGE By Daniel Buelow

Raised beds and cold frames are two important tools that are a gardener’s best friend in the short growing season of the Front Range. Understanding the purpose of these tools and their benefits is a great way to achieving a productive garden early, throughout and long after the typical growing season. Spring is upon us and planning for the garden of your dreams must start now!

RAISED BED GARDENING Araised bed is essentially a garden that is constructed above the native ground that uses a premium soil mixture to provide an optimal growing environment. Raised beds provide an opportunity to enjoy a productive garden where space, soil or environment may be a limiting factor.

Growing in a raised bed offers an ease and comfort in garden preparation, production, maintenance and harvest. Crop yields may show improvement in a raised bed thanks to an increase in the plant density and the ability to quickly manipulate or modify the soil and growing conditions. Additional benefits include the reduction of soil compaction by eliminating foot traffic in the garden and the avoidance of many common challenges that plague Colorado soils. Native soils may prove to be high in clay content, pH, salts or heavy metals and suffer from poor water drainage. Cold and wet soils that are slow to warm up and dry out in the springtime put gardeners at a disadvantage with delayed seed germination times and reduced root growth. In raised beds, the soil is located above ground and warms and dries more quickly supplying the perfect soil environment needed for a quick start in the spring.

RAISED BED CONSTRUCTION Constructing a raised bed requires consideration of the site location, size, construction materials and soil. First, choose a site that receives lots of sunlight and if possible a site that is protected from wind. Next, determine the bed size with the understanding that the bed length may be as long as desired; however, the bed should not be more than 4 ft. wide to allow for a comfortable reach anywhere into the bed without entering. Consider the above ground and below ground plant structures and growth when determining bed depth as the depth must be sufficient to accommodate the crop to be grown. For shallower beds or those constructed on bare ground, till or amend the native soil beneath the bed for purpose to improve drainage and offer additional potential root zone.

Construction materials for bed frame may include untreated lumber, timbers, pavers or blocks. Pre-constructed untreated wooden frames that are hinged at the corners and stackable to create deeper raised beds can be found at many garden centers. Also available are manufactured bed sets that are decorative and quick to assemble. Not every raised bed needs a frame. However, the frame offers erosion control and some temperature stability. Insertion of foam within the walls of the bed offer even greater temperature control during cold nights. Keep in mind that raised beds may also be covered with a plastic, a frost cloth or a grow tunnel cover to provide resistance to crop losses when freezing temperatures occur.

Lastly and most importantly, select a soil for a raised bed that is loose, meaning that the soil has ample pore space for oxygen and water, provides good drainage, and is free of viruses, pests and diseases. The soil should contain organic matter but not be too rich in organic matter. Organic matter (OM) content near 5% may be sufficient for many crops, while slightly higher OM content may result in a quicker crop turnover or sometimes in crop difficulties or quality issues.

COLD FRAMES A cold frame is a miniature greenhouse like structure that consists of a stable, but bottomless frame and a cover that is penetrable by light and has the ability to hinge open and vent off the excess heat that builds up within the frame on cold but sunny Colorado days. Cold frames are valuable because they create a protected environment for cool season crops to continue growth or production without the threat of life threatening damages due to cold or freezing.

Cold frames are used primarily for productive early season starts and late season finishes for cool season vegetables and other tender plants that are started outside before the danger of nighttime frosts are past in the spring or are still producing magnificently ahead of anticipated nighttime frosts in the fall. Gardeners using cold frames are able to start crop production weeks earlier and end crop production weeks later than seasonally expected; nevertheless, cold frames require attention to detail. Be very cautious and mindful of the daytime heat that builds inside the cold frame on sunny but cold days.

LET’S GARDEN! It is time to get spring gardening preparations started. Consider raised beds and cold frames for lengthening the gardening season and enjoy the garden of your dreams!
