The Tinsel! display is lighting up Sterling where visitors can get into the holiday spirit with lights, music, food truck—and maybe an up-close visit with Washington Capitals mascot Screech.

All Things Holidays BY VISIT LOUDOUN

decked out with twinkling lights and filled with tinsel— lots of tinsel!”

Spectacular holiday-themed light shows are the kind of thing we expect at Disney World or in the glitz and glamor of Hollywood or New York City.

Running Nov. 19-Jan. 22, hockey fans can visit #Allcaps Corner on the site for Caps-themed arts, crafts, photographs and swag; for each ticket purchased to the event, $1 goes to Inova Health Foundation.

But this winter season, Loudoun will be taking center stage. From the urban east to the rural west, Loudoun will light up with glittering hitech illuminations, starting with the immersive, interactive Tinsel! experience on aptly named Holiday Drive, location of the Holiday Inn Washington-Dulles Intl Airport. “It’s so much more than a light show,” said Stephanie Snapkoski of the B. F. Saul Company Hospitality Group, which is staging the show and featuring exclusive activations with the Washington Capitals hockey team. “Aside from all the ‘what’s around the next corner?’ excitement, visitors can enjoy scavenger hunts, a giant 18-foot Christmas tree, selfie stations for pictures with Santa and a 120-foot tunnel DECEMBER 2021

Moving further west, Leesburg’s Morven Park will host the Mid-Atlantic debut of Los Angeles, California’s spectacular Holiday Road, a walking trail of twinkling illuminations, giant themed installations and iconic holiday scenes. Running Nov. 26 until Jan. 2, guests are transported to a snow-carpeted fantasy land replete with North Pole, Elf Village, Gingerbread Lane, light tunnels, Christmas tree forests and more. It’s not Disneyland—but it’s close. Further west, on the slopes of the Blue Ridge, Nov. 26 also sees the launch of the third annual Lighting of the Vines at Bluemont Vineyard:

HOLIDAYS IN LOUDOUN

15,000 holiday lights strung through 10,000 grape vines on the property. While the glow can be seen from miles away, the best place to enjoy it is from the winery tasting room or the property’s Harvest Room & Kitchen restaurant up the hill. It’s not all “light” fun this holiday season of course. Throughout December, Middleburg will celebrate “A Dickens of a Christmas,” a Charles Dickens-inspired experience that transports you back to the era of “A Christmas Carol,” with activities that include a dog show, a fun run, carol singing, theatrical performances of A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker and vintage carriage rides through the streets. Make sure not to miss the Christmas in Middleburg tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 3 and the iconic parade December 4. Simply magic. Beef and Mushroom Pie at Salt Pot Kitchen is a best-seller.

TASTES

A Taste of Britain Arrives in Loudoun BY JAN MERCKER

A

s a British mom of American kids, Wendy Salt remembers sitting at chilly high school football games, dreaming of a hearty, warming soup instead of traditional concession stand fare. When the pandemic dealt a blow to her event planning business, Salt tapped into what she saw as a niche in the local market for cozy but nutritious comfort food. Salt and her son Charlie launched the Salt Pot Kitchen in January with a mission to bring high-quality authentic British food to Loudoun and Northern Virginia. “I felt there was this hole in the market for this homemade, good quality but pretty basic food,” Salt said. “We really wanted it to be Britishbased.” In the past year, the Salts have built a regional following for their savory meat pies, sausage rolls and hearty soups. The kitchen appeals to British expats from around the region craving a taste of home and local fans seeking to explore new flavors of comfort food.

For the mother and son team, it’s all about keeping it simple with authentic and comforting flavors and high-quality ingredients. “We know it’s what we like. It’s what I fed my kids and what I kind of grew up on—we were hoping that other people would like it as well,” Salt said. The Salts rent kitchen space at the Chefscape food incubator in Leesburg and have also started hosting pop-up markets at Chefscape. Fans can find the Salt Pot Kitchen at the Gilberts Corner Farmers Market on Saturdays and Sundays and at the EatLoco Farmers Market at One Loudoun on Saturdays. The Salts also do pop-ups at area wineries and breweries. Salt hails from Surrey in southern England but traveled the world as the daughter of a British diplomat. She’s a Cordon Bleu-trained chef who worked in kitchens in Europe before moving to the DC area with her husband in the ’90s and raising their three children in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. In DC, Salt shifted gears and moved into international event planning, working for top TASTE OF BRITAIN

Jessica Paulin has renewed her musical journey in Loudoun’s wine country.

From Driveway Concerts to The Winery Circuit

Jessica Paulin Finds Her Voice BY JAN MERCKER

During the darkest days of the pandemic, Jessica Paulin sang in her driveway. The Lovettsville mom of four had spent the previous year working hard to get back to her first love—music—and wasn’t about to let it go. 10

“I couldn’t give it up, so I put a sign in my yard that said, ‘Live Music Today,’” Paulin recalled. Neighbors strolled by and set up chairs and listened while Paulin pulled favorites from her eclectic repertoire. In the year and a half since then, Paulin, who performs under the name Jes Jams, has stormed onto the local winery and brewery scene and built a regional following. For Paulin, her efforts to get back into her singing after setting it aside for more than a decade was accompanied by a hard-core weight loss journey. And both have required hard work and determination. “My journey started Aug. 18 of 2018. I

PAULIN

wanted to lose weight and get back into music,” she said. “I had goals and they came together.” Since that pivotal summer, Paulin has lost nearly 200 pounds, which she said has improved her posture and vocal range, and plays local venues and private gigs virtually every weekend. Paulin said the gradual lifting of COVID-19 gathering restrictions last spring provided opportunities for newer artists like her. She was willing to take on gigs that weren’t as appealing to some of the region’s more seasoned performers, including split gigs with a cleaning break in the middle as many wineries reopened with strict reservation policies. It helped her build a relationship with one her favorite venues—50 West Vineyards near Middleburg— where she plays regularly. “The pandemic was good for me, even though I did lose my income for a few months, I actually took a bunch of cancellation jobs and got into places that I couldn’t get into before because they were booked,” she said. “I was able to build relationships with managers.” Paulin grew up in Chamberlain, SD, and like so many big musical names, got her start in church choirs at a young age. “Apparently, I was always the loudest singer, even back then,” she said with a laugh. She started getting requests to sing at weddings and funerals and then began booking gigs at parties as a teen. And while her family was supportive, she said, they also didn’t encourage music as a career. Paulin dreamed of becoming a singer/songwriter but was encouraged to take a more practical approach. She went to college to study special education and worked with children and adults with intellectual disabilities for more than a decade. But the music was still a part of her life. “I had my clients singing all the time,” she said. She met her husband Brian in the mid-2000s and moved to Loudoun. She pushed singing aside while raising four children and running a home daycare business. But when her family moved from Lovettsville to Leesburg in 2015, she spotted a post from another local musician on a community Facebook page that opened her eyes to the booming Loudoun music scene. “I had no idea about the winery and brewery live music world at all,” Paulin said. Paulin started forging connections with fellow DECEMBER 2021

western Loudoun musicians and going to gigs, watching and learning how performers managed gigs, equipment and logistics. Vowing in August 2018 to make music her life’s work, she gave up her childcare business and slowly started booking gigs, initially making cold calls. “I take an hour and a half radius around my house and I just start reaching out,” she said. And audiences have responded to her sultry voice and musical selections. When Paulin started building her setlist, she started with online searches for popular tunes at wineries and brewery venues. “The funny thing was, it was the same stuff I grew up listening to and the same stuff I sing in the shower,” she said. “It was all my normal stuff, so I didn’t have to learn much. It was already in my head.” Her repertoire ranges from country favorites to more soulful tunes—from Janis Joplin to Prince to Carole King. She loves requests and old favorites, but also likes introducing audience members to her own favorites like Brandi Carlile. With her performance career growing, Paulin is doing some songwriting, working to build her repertoire of originals and gently adding them into winery setlists. She’s also planning to dip her toes into recording demos and videos. As a parent, a former teacher and someone who wasn’t encouraged to pursue her musical dreams as a kid, Paulin also wants to focus on helping Loudoun’s young musicians find their footing. She recently invited teen musician Lillian Hackett to share a gig at 50 West and wants to help organize future events for young musicians. On the flip side, she says she also tries to encourage older audience members to pursue their musical passions—just as she’s succeeding in getting her musical groove back in her early forties. And Paulin said she owes a big part of her success to Brian and their kids, who range from kindergarten to high school. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. My youngest one wants to be a singer when she grows up—just like her mommy.” For more information and upcoming shows, go to facebook.com/jesjamslove or jesjamsmusic. com. with sharing a vision for the use of the large farm lot as the adjacent Hartland neighborhood moved to construction. “I believed that we could save this portion of the land, preserve the old farmhouse, and VINES showcase this preservation effort alongside the entranceway and road frontage to this new community, serving as a wonderful amenity to both Hartland and the surrounding areas,” Hickox said. Hickox envisions preserving the property as a family-run farm that is open to the public for hundreds of thousands of visitors to enjoy every year, sampling award-winning wine, learning about the farm’s history, and taking the distinctive natural beauty of the county’s farm landscape. Aldie Farm Gets New Life as Latest Loudoun Winery BY NORMAN K. STYER

Loudoun’s newest winery, located amid subdivisions in the fast-growing Aldie area, still provides a glimpse of the county’s agricultural traditions. While Old Farm Winery at Hartland is destined to become a popular neighborhood hangout for many of Loudoun’s newest residents, for owner Jon Hickox the connection to Loudoun’s farming legacy is important. The 35-acre property was once part of the 1,100-acre Lenah Farm that now is home to new suburban neighborhoods. As a youth, Hickox worked on C.D. Smith’s cattle farm, one of many lining the Rt. 50 corridor before development started moving west from South Riding. He started his construction/ remodeling company while a student at George Mason University. A decade ago, he combined those interests with the opening of the Winery at Bull Run in Fairfax County. He credits Willowsford developer Mark Trostle 12

“The concept of a farm winery in a community is very new, which surprises me because I would have thought it would have caught on many years ago. It’s almost like the old golf course community model, but you replace the golf course with a farm winery,” he said. Twelve acres of the farm have been newly planted with grapes—Vidal blanc, petit manseng and Albarino. In all, Hickox has 90 acres in vines, producing 300 tons of grapes each year, with winemaker Ashton Lough producing 20,000 cases of wine that pour into 1.2 million glasses. While welcoming the visitors who come for the wine, music, and views, Hickox’s continues to focus on the property’s late 19th century farmhouse and even older bank barn. By next spring, they’ll be venues for weddings and events—but only after a restoration that he hopes will help tell the story of Loudoun’s agricultural roots. “I’m just as proud of those old structures as I am of the wine business as a whole,” he said. “It’s just so cool for people to see what this place used to look like in an area that is so full of transients. … They don’t know the Loudoun that I remember. It will be so neat for them to see these old structures in this setting.” Old Farm Winery at Hartand is located at 23583 Fleetwood Road in Aldie. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Children are welcome. Pets and outside food and drinks are not permitted. Learn more at oldfarmwineryhartland.com.

DC-based firms before launching her own company, Salt Events. But when the pandemic rocked the event planning world, she decided it was time to act on a dream she’d been toying with for years. When Charlie Salt graduated from Loudoun Valley High School, he decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps and pursue a career as a professional chef, working at an area winery and at Salamander Resort but had also been itching to pursue his own business. “We just suddenly said, ‘Hey why don’t we do this?’ We decided to join forces,” Salt said. Mother and son share the cooking load. Charlie’s specialties include the kitchen’s popular beef and mushroom pies, cottage pies with beef and mashed potatoes and fan favorite sausage rolls, minced pork in a flaky pastry crust. “As basic as it is, it’s always so popular,” Salt said. The kitchen also serves up Wiltshire Plaits, made of pork, apple and cheddar in a savory pastry crust; Cornish-style pasties, hand-held meat and potato pies; chicken and leek pies and a revolving menu of soups like roasted cauliflower,

beef stew and creamy potato with cheddar and bacon. For Salt, it’s all about keeping it simple with authentic and comforting flavors and highquality ingredients. “We know it’s what we like. It’s what I fed my kids and what I kind of grew up on—we were hoping that other people would like it as well,” Salt said. Salt lives near Lovettsville and sources the kitchen’s meats from area farms, including pork from Long Stone Farm and beef from Milcreek Farm, and has worked with Lothar’s to create authentic British bangers. Like many expats, Salt has been unable to return to the UK since the start of the pandemic and loves the idea of bringing those familiar flavors home. “We want to focus on those things that are really British,” she said. “And bring the smells and the memories and the tastes of childhood” For more information on the Salt Pot Kitchen, including a menu and pop-up locations, go to thesaltpot.com.
