mma Rowley’s life has always been enriched by music.

As a child, she discovered her earliest passion in musical theater. Shows like “The Sound of Music” and “Oliver” inspired her to pursue her own place on stage. “I remember telling my parents over and over again, ‘I want to be one of the kids in those shows,’” Rowley said. Her persistent interest convinced her parents to bring her to New York City for open-calls, in the hopes of landing a role on some of theater’s grandest stages. At age 12, her dreams were realized when she was cast in a Broadway revival of “Gypsy.” “I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything in the world,” Rowley said. “It proved to me that even the wildest of dreams can come true.”

second Broadway performance, “Bye Bye Birdie.” While it could have been easy to consider that an artistic peak, Rowley’s trajectory was merely beginning. “I picked up a guitar for the first time when I was about thirteen and immediately started writing songs,” she said. “I’d always loved writing stories and poems so songwriting came to me naturally.” Rowley’s major influence during this period in her life was Taylor Swift, at the time a child herself, who was bringing an exciting, fresh take to the country music table. The same drive that led Rowley to her early Broadway successes served her well in her songwriting pursuits. She recorded and released her first self-titled EP entirely on her own from the confides of her bedroom. Listening back to these songs, with their understated production values and innocent themes, makes Rowley “cringe,” she said. But there’s an undeniable charm to every song, and Rowley’s impressive songwriting abilities were demonstrated from the very beginning.

Two years later, Rowley was cast in her 4

Fink finds inspiration in nature, other painters work and, often, from her photography and photos taken by friends as they travel. She is also an art teacher in Loudoun County and one of the most important lessons she provides regards “transformation” of those inspirational sources. “I explore imagery and what’s banging around in my head,” she said. “But, I alter those images and concepts to transform them into art. I am not bound by the composition of a reference photo and I’m willing to move a tree if it makes for a better painting.”

“The advertising business affected my art in that it taught a good sense of design, composition and media such as photography,” she said. When asked if she thought there were any original ideas, Fink said, “Yes, give three artists a germ of an idea and you will see each express the idea differently. I feel I am wired a certain way that influences my finished painting … it changes over time because of practice, learned skill, my methods and process that includes a lot of emphasis on sketching, underpainting, drawing the basic shapes, composing and then layering more and more detail. Black Hoof Brewing Company head brewer and co-owner Bill Haase applies modern scientific precision to a centuries-old brewing tradition.

In First Year, Black Hoof Brewing Wins Gold BY RENSS GEENE

L

oudoun breweries are perennially well-represented in the annual Virginia Craft Beer Cup competition, and this year it was Leesburg’s Black Hoof Brewing Company bringing home a gold medal. And a week later, owners Bill and Nikki Haase cut the cake to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their brewing adventure. Although Black Hoof may be new to brewing, Haase and assistant head brewer Brandon Flanigin are veterans. Haase has won awards for his home brewing, and Flanigin previously brewed at Quattro Goombas Brewery in Aldie. Black Hoof brought home the top prize in the German Wheat Beer category with its Island Pond Hefeweizen. Like a taste? 8

That may be a challenge. Since the award announcement in early June, Hasse and Flanigin have worked hard to keep it on tap in the face of increased demand from beer connoisseurs. A few days after the award announcement, Bill and Nikki Haase were surrounded by friends and supporters in their South King Street brewery to celebrate the remarkable first year of operation. “I call you my Black Hoof family. You are,” Bill Hasse said, before the former Marine cut the birthday cake with a sword. “Leesburg and Loudoun County have been just a great place for us to start a business,” Nikki Hasse added. OTHER WINNERS Loudoun breweries can always be found on the list of statewide winners. Old Ox Brewery this year took home medals for the third year running; Belly Love in Purcellville took first place for its 50 Shades of Gold Belgian pale ale; newcomer Farm Brewery at Broad Run won third place for its Wes’ Maul Belgian Tripel, and Crooked Run Brewing won third place in the German

Loudoun Musician’s Music Video Scores Views on Facebook, Hopes to Score Judges’ Hearts at Upcoming Battle of the Bands BY CHRISTIAN THOMPSON

L

iam B. Smith is undeniably ambitious. Although the up-andcoming musician from western Loudoun released just his second single in May, he already has his sights set on shaking up the county’s music scene. And maybe his aspirations aren’t so daft. In the two months since the release of “Keep Your Head Up,” the single’s music video has racked up nearly 50,000 views on Facebook. Although the track owes a certain je ne sais quoi to garage rockers Cage the Elephant, it swaggers with a confidence rarely found in an artist’s debut and begs to be played again before it’s hardly finished. On July 3, Liam and his band competed in Vienna’s Jammin’ Java Mid-Atlantic Battle of the Bands, hoping to make the Aug. 31 finals and land a $2,000 cash prize. On Friday, July 20, Smith and his band will follow up their battle performance with a slot at Leesburg’s Alive Fest, a music festival 10

for teenagers in sixth to 12th grade. The festival is sponsored by Teen Serve Camp, a Christian-based camp that promotes community service. Entry to the festival is free and will feature food, a rock climbing wall, and prize raffles. More information go to teenservecamp.com. Only time will tell whether the reception of his band’s first single will predict further success in Vienna, but Liam seems up for the task. Get Out Loudoun recently chatted with Liam about his outlook on Loudoun’s music scene, what inspires his pursuit of songwriting, the time he sang backing vocals for a Japanese pop band, and his thoughts ahead of the Battle of the Bands. GOL: So tell me a little about your musical/ personal background. What were some of your earliest musical memories/influences? SMITH: My early years of music discovery sounded a lot like Chuck Berry and the Beatles. It was pretty basic—12 bar blues and whatnot. I really liked Chicago as a

pre-teen. I listened to a little 2000-era punk, but for the most part I thought that it was overdone. It wasn’t until I discovered [Japanese pop group] One Ok Rock as a teenager that I really fell into music. GOL: Do you feel as if the music culture in Loudoun has grown in recent years? And if so, how has the culture affected you? SMITH: I’m not sure that I can really say whether it’s grown or not. I’m 21 and have only been pursuing music seriously for the past two or three years, so I haven’t really been in the loop for that long. I will say that the music culture is very emaciated right now, but I think everyone knows that. Sure, if you play bluegrass or something acoustic and quiet that people don’t need to pay attention to, you can run the winery circuit and make bank off tips. But there are few opportunities for rock bands. GOL: How did you discover the band One OK Go? Is Japanese music/culture something you’re generally interested in? And how did you get involved in singing backing vocals on their latest album? SMITH: I mean, I think that Japanese culture has a lot to offer the West … but my interest in OOR wasn’t really a cultural thing. I came across them on YouTube in 2012 and was hooked from the first minute of the first song I heard. When they were working on their album, “Ambitions,” they put something out on 14

social media that they were looking for some people to sing gang vocals on a few tracks. I guess I was one of the first 20 to respond. So I flew to L.A. for two days and crashed on a friend’s couch. … Imagine being a kid in 1968 and being asked to sing background vocals on the recording of “Hey Jude.” That’s how I felt and still feel about that experience. GOL: In the music video for “Keep Your Head Up,” there are themes of artistic pursuit in the face of a more conventional lifestyle. How have these themes influenced your own life as a musician? SMITH: I think 99 percent of artists face the sort of pushback that’s portrayed in [“Keep Your Head Up”]. And I think that kind of pushback is fair to a point. You need to prove to people that your motivations are right and that you’re dedicated to your vision. So I wanted to portray that struggle set in the shoes of a character who was comparable to me GET OUT LOUDOUN

but distinct enough that the work could stand apart from Liam Smith. GOL: Can you tell me a little about how you’re preparing for the Battle of the Bands? And are there any other shows that you have coming up in the near future? SMITH: So I hate competitions, but Jammin’ Java is a great place to play. We’ve got a set of four songs we’re going to play, including Keep Your Head Up. I need to finish writing one of them, but I’m really excited about it. That’s the only summer gig we have booked right now. We need to get on the ball in terms of getting shows, but it’s tough. So if you’re reading this and you know of any opportunities, hit up my management at info@ liambsmith.com. I think some cool stuff will happen this summer. As Rowley matured, her artistic interests expanded to include elements of classic rock and pop punk. She says artists like David Bowie and Paramore were particularly influential when she recorded her follow-up EP, 2012’s Summer, which was recorded with the help of Nashville producer Dan Hagen. She said that she would send Hagen songs that contained certain elements or sounds that she wanted to explore in her own songs. “My own style of writing wasn’t very rock and my voice didn’t have any edge but we did find a way to incorporate some of my favorite rock influences into the production,” Rowley said. “It was exactly the sound I was hoping to achieve.”
