BY VISIT LOUDOUN
Out with the old, in with the new. As we bid farewell to 2021, it’s time to look forward to new openings and experiences planned for Loudoun in 2022—big and small. Let’s start big. The much anticipated 257acre Hal & Berni Hanson Regional Park opens in the spring at Evergreen Mills Road near Brambleton—the land bequeathed to the county by the late State Department official Hal Hanson and his wife, Berni. The park will have 17 athletic fields, a skate park, over 75 acres of recreational space and an events venue. In northern Loudoun, the 91-acre Lovettsville Community Park fully opens in January on the eastern edge of town after two years in development. Facilities include equestrian trails, a pond, an amphitheater and multiple softball, baseball and soccer fields. Lovettsville is set to be a sporting contender. Talking contenders, Feb. 18 is the official home opener at Segra Field of pro rugby team Old Glory DC’s 2022 season. To commemorate the event, the team will host a themed “Loudoun Night” featuring local businesses, a ribbon cutting and a celebration of Loudoun as an official “rugby city.” Staying active but moving indoors, February is the much-anticipated slated opening of The Ballpark Loudoun—baseball’s answer to TopGolf. Located opposite One Loudoun off Rt. 7, the interactive facility combines cutting-edge JANUARY 2022
From sports to culture. Throughout 2022, the George C. Marshall House at Dodona Manor will be celebrating 75 years since the great statesman announced his vision for rebuilding post-World War II Europe in a speech at Harvard on June 5, 1947. Celebrations will include a film festival, a poster contest, the firstever Marshall Award for Ethical Leadership and a June 5 commemoration at Dodona Manor. Talking history, October 6-8 Morven Park will host the Smithsonian’s acclaimed “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” exhibition, a look at the transformation of rural communities in the U.S. since 1900. And so to small … wine lovers can look forward to the February release of 2020 Valle Tranquilo: a Bordeaux-style red blend made via a collaboration between Hillsboro wineries 868 Estate, Maggie Malick, Hillsborough Vineyards, Notaviva, Doukenie, Breaux and Two Twisted Posts. Back In Leesburg, meanwhile, upscale ice cream emporium Mocatinas has partnered with Bespoke Books and Archives to start a new monthly book club at Mocatinas aptly named “Booked at Mocatinas.” What better way to celebrate the spirit of 2022 than with these new Loudoun offerings. Lots of eyes have been on the newly installed webcam that shows the activities of the large nest on the Dulles Greenway’s wetlands property south of Leesburg where a pair of bald eagles have raised their young for the past 15 years. On Jan. 23, area residents can get a closer look at the privately owned nature area by joining the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy for a bird walk. Built in the early 1990s to replace wetlands lost when the Dulles Greenway was built, the wetlands along Goose Creek near Oatlands is a great place to observe a wide variety of birds, including small sparrows, waterfowl, wading birds, and the bald eagles. Space is limited for the tour and advance registration is required at loudounwildlife.org. If you don’t make the cut for this month’s tour, inquire about other upcoming opportunities. Also, watch the progress of this year’s eagle nesting season at dullesgreenway.com/eaglecam.

Pioneering Doukénie Winery founders Nicki and George Bazaco have been recognized for their contributions to Virginia’s wine industry.
WINE
Doukénie Founders Receive Lifetime Achievement Award The Virginia Wineries Association presented its 2021 Gordon Murchie Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. George and Nicki Bazaco, the founders of Doukénie Winery near Hillsboro. They purchased the 400-acre western Loudoun farm in 1983, calling it Windham after George’s grandmother’s Hudson River Valley farm where he spent his summers as a boy. They planted their first vines—Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—on the property in 1985. A second block of whites—Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc— followed two years later. Initially, they made wines for friends and family and sold or bartered grapes with the few other wineries in the area. In 1995, they applied for their farm winery ABC license and opened a tasting room in the basement of their farmhouse. “Windham Winery” was the 43rd winery to be licensed in Virginia; today there are more than 300 registered wineries in the commonwealth. In 2007, Windham Winery was renamed as Doukénie Winery in honor of George’s grandmother, Doukénie Bazaco, who was a 6
winemaker in Greece following in the steps of her grandfather. Since bottling its first vintage in 1995, the winery has won numerous awards in competitions ranging from the San Francisco Chronicle International to the Virginia Governors Cup competition to the Loudoun County Wine awards. Last month, its 2020 Sauvignon Blanc was selected as the best-inclass winner in Loudoun’s wine awards. The Virginia Wineries Association’s lifetime achievement award is named in honor of Gordon Murchie, a long-time and leading advocate of East Coast and Virginia winemaking who also is credited with promoting the use of European vinifera grape varieties, instead of hybrids or native varieties, in the eastern U.S. Located north of Hillsboro on Mountain Road, Doukénie Winery is open Tuesday through Sunday, with live music offered most weekends. Reservations are requested. Learn more at doukeniewinery.com.

Hillsboro Mayor Roger Vance addresses the crowd during the Dec. 17, 2021, rededication of the Susan Koerner Wright historical marker along Rt. 9 in town.
Wright Brothers’ Mother Birthplace Celebrated Anew BY NORMAN K. STYER
On Dec. 17, 1929, a crowd estimated at 1,000 people gathered in Hillsboro to witness the unveiling of a roadside historical marker highlighting the birthplace of one of the world’s most important mothers of invention—or at least mother of inventors. Susan Koerner Wright was born April 30, 1831, on a farm south of Hillsboro where her German immigrant father, John Gottlieb Koener, worked as a wagonmaker and wheelwright. The family moved west to Indiana and in 1853 she attended Hartville College where she met and married Milton Wright. They raised their family in Indiana and Ohio. She is credited with instilling in her boys the skills to create, starting with their own toys and playthings, and the desire to pursue intellectual interests. The marker describes her as “A notable woman who largely guided and wisely inspired her sons to their immortal discovery.”
Wilbur were young men and their younger sister, Katherine, is credited as a close collaborator and vital supporter. The marker memorializes her “sisterly devotion” that “aided in giving mankind access to the unlimited aerial highway.” The effort to memorialize the birthplace of the Wright Brothers came from an unusual source: the Rivanna Garden Club of Charlottesville. It was only after its members launched the memorial project that they learned Wright wasn’t born in the nearby Hillsboro in Albemarle County—since renamed Yancey Mills—but in the western Loudoun County town. But they pressed ahead with the effort. According to the account of the unveiling ceremony on the front page of the Dec. 19, 1929, Blue Ridge Herald newspaper, five members were present at the ceremony, along with representative of the University of Virginia, and five members of the extended Wright

family. Hillsboro Mayor D.T. Link formally accepted the marker on behalf of the community. Longtime Loudoun attorney Wilbur C. Hall, then representing Loudoun in the House of Delegates, also addressed the crowd. “Today air-minded Americans turn to this modest village to pay tribute to this departed mother of Orville and Wilbur Wright, genii of the twentieth century, who, 26 years ago today, made the first successful flight with a heavier-than-air machine,” the article quoted him as saying. Nine decades later—on Dec. 17, 2021, the 118th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight in Kill Devil Hills, NC—today’s Hillsboro mayor, Roger Vance, led a similar ceremony to rededicate the marker, which had been removed and refurbished during the town’s streetscape improvement project. Speakers including U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA-10), County Chair Phyllis J. Randall (D-At Large), Wright family biographer Tom Crouch, Hillsboro Charter Academy STEAM Specialist Megan Tucker and Lisa Morin of the Rivanna Garden Club, and groundbreaking female commercial pilot Laura Savino. The program highlighted Susan Koerner Wright’s ability to build and invent toys and household tools, and the significant influence she had in promoting curiosity and inventiveness in her children, and championed the role women and girls can play in STEM fields. Historian Eugene Scheel added to the unusual tale about how the marked came to be located in the town. He said the Koerner family homestead actually was closer to Purcellville than to Hillsboro. But Purcellville lost out on the claim to fame because, at that time, the town consisted of little more than two buildings, one of which was Purcell’s Store. The Koerner home was located along the postal route from Hillsboro, thus had a Hillsboro address. See the marker at the intersection of Rt. 9 and Gaver Road in Hillsboro. And with the town’s recently completed traffic calming and streetscape improvements, there is actually a safe place to park at the memorial site. JANUARY 2022

LETTUCE BE LOCO OPENS ON CHURCH STREET BY HAYLEY BOUR
Michele and Cory Fisher of Leesburg thought the Leesburg restaurant scene was missing something. Their new salad and warm bowl restaurant, Lettuce Be LoCo, opened last month, bringing fast, easy, and healthy options to Loudoun County. Fisher said she and her husband have long worked in restaurants and wanted to marry their passion for the industry with their interest in health. And, with an abundance of local farms, the pair knew they could build a business literally rooted in the community. “To eat fresh and local and also to bring something healthy with a nice atmosphere was the goal. … It’s just something that feels good,” Fisher said. The duo partnered with Leesburg-based Master Chef Rich Rosendale to engineer the menu. They spent months in Rosendale’s kitchen, experimenting with recipes, and tweaking their favorite creations to perfection. Fisher said that the secret to a great salad is the dressing. With guidance from Rosendale, Fisher said they concocted some pretty craveable options. “It was teamwork, for sure,” Fisher said. 12
Opening during the pandemic presented challenges; There were delays in getting kitchen equipment, which pushed the restaurant opening back. The Fishers rely on local farms for products, so a later opening after the first frost of the winter meant less availability of food. But, Gathering Springs Farm in Middleburg, and a few other farms, were able to provide enough produce late in the harvest season to stock the kitchen for the winter season. “It’s been great, but it’s been loco,” Fisher said of the community response. “We’ve gotten such good feedback from so many people who work around there, for lunchtime hour. We’ve got all five-star reviews so far, which has been so nice. It’s been really successful, and we’re really happy with how the first week went.” Customers quickly developed lists of their favorite dishes. Fisher said the LoCo Cobb salad, the avocado grain bowl, and the curry cauliflower soup have been hits. The Fishers plan to offer seasonal creations, optimizing the vegetable supply they curate from local farms. They also plan to allow salad and health-food lovers to be able to order directly to work or home as an option on the DoorDash app. Right now, the focus is making the Leesburg restaurant a fixture in the community. Eventually the Fishers hope to open other locations in Loudoun County. Lettuce Be LoCo is located at 208 Church St SE #100 and open daily 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Learn more at lettucebeloco.com.
