GET OUT LOUDOUN SPORTS THE SPORTING LIFE IN LOUDOUN BY VISIT LOUDOUN
Loudoun has been a breeding ground for pro sports athletes for years. Celebrated Middleburg equestrian Joe Fargis won individual and team showjumping gold medals at the 1984 Olympics. At the recent winter Olympics in Beijing, Ashburn native Ashley Caldwell won gold in the mixed team aerials freestyle skiing event. Major League Baseball pitchers Taylor Clarke (Kansas City Royals) and Conor Mullee (New York Yankees) both hail from Loudoun. Not only have professional athletes trained here, but in recent years athletes from around the world have opened sports facilities in the county where everyone can take part. The most famous of these is Ion International Training Center, the state-of-the-art twin rink ice-skating facility in Leesburg, which was opened in 2019 by Romanian figure skater Luiz Taifas. Taifas represented Romania at the Winter Olympics in 1992, 1994 and 1998 and as a young child trained with the legendary gymnast Nadia Comaneci. At Ion, expert coaches, many of them former professionals from Eastern Europe, train future stars in everything from figure skating and ice dance to ice hockey and curling. Indeed, two Ion figure skaters were alternates for the US Olympic team in Beijing.
Club, a full spectrum soccer program for young stars based out of the new Virginia Revolution Sportsplex. The 44-acre facility has four floodlit turf fields and trains athletes to develop technical skills and critical thinking—on and off the field. While soccer is the main sport at Revolution, the facility also caters to basketball, field hockey and lacrosse. Let’s not forget the horses. While Middleburg is the capital of horse country, Morven Park International Equestrian Center in Leesburg trains riders in everything from show jumping to dressage as well as hosts year-round events open to the public, including the prestigious Spring and Fall International Horse Trials, which attract elite international riders and Olympic level equestrians. From four legs to two wheels: On May 7, Loudoun will host The Gravel Grinder National Championship where elite-level cyclists take part in the 100-mile “Grinder Nationals” championship ride through western Loudoun. If all that sounds exhausting, remember you don’t have to take part in elite sports in Loudoun to enjoy them. Segra Field in Leesburg is now home ground to soccer’s Loudoun United, feeder teams to MLS’s DC United, and to major league rugby stars Old Glory DC, whose 2022 season just got underway. Let’s play!

LOUDOUN FAVORITE MELISSA QUINN FOX EARNS WAMMIE NODS
following with her blend of country and rock covers and memorable originals.
BY JAN MERKCER
Fox grew up in Pittsburgh and had two significant and parallel influences when it came to music: her church choir and her parents’ music collection, which was full of brilliant women singers who continue to influence her today: Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, Carole King and others.
Melissa Quinn Fox’s gritty, gorgeous voice occasionally draws Natalie Merchant and Miranda Lambert comparisons. But Fox has a sound all her own. Her unique voice and songwriting skills have made the NOVA-based singer/songwriter a fixture on the Loudoun music scene, scored regional radio play and earned her two nominations for this year’s Wammie awards recognizing the best musicians in the D.C. area. Fox finds out March 26 whether she’s won the top spot in two categories: Best Country/ Americana Artist and Best Country/Americana Song for her single “Back There.” “My voice is my voice … It’s my gift and I don’t need to sound like anyone else,” Fox said. Over the past year and a half, Fox has become a regular performer at a slew of area restaurants, wineries and breweries, appearing in Loudoun nearly every weekend–either with her full six-piece band or a smaller ensemble for more intimate venues. She’s built a solid regional 4
“I was always in the family room listening to my dad’s records,” Fox said. “I gravitated to the ladies of course.” Fox went to college for musical theater and traveled the country performing on the theme park music circuit before returning to Pittsburgh. She got her start on the Pittsburgh coffeehouse scene and built a band in her hometown. She followed a former boyfriend to D.C., and while the romance didn’t last, her love for the city and the region did. “I fell in love with the city and decided to stay,” she said. Leaving her Pittsburgh connections and starting

over on the DMV music scene was tough–but also brought opportunities. “I was kind of like a small fish in a big pond,” she said. “It took me a while to branch out.” After performing with other DMV bands, Fox decided—right before COVID hit—to shake things up and go out on her own, with a focus on her original songs. “I had all these songs. … I was like, ‘What am I waiting for?’” she said. She put together a new band, featuring several Loudoun-based musicians, in 2020, and the group made their DMV debut at Leesburg’s MacDowell Brew Kitchen that summer. Since then, Fox, who lives in Alexandria with her husband, has found performance opportunities by heading west, and Loudouners can catch her at local venues several times a month. Fox has also been working with noted Loudounbased producer Todd Wright since the fall of 2020. She released her first single “Give It A Try” in February 2021 and has since recorded four more original songs in Nashville, including the Wammie-nominated “Back There.” Recording “Back There” gave Fox a chance to return to a song she wrote more than a decade ago as an up-tempo tune. When she went to Nashville, her producers encouraged her to add a ballad to the mix. She didn’t connect with the pieces from other writers that her team suggested and instead decided to revamp an old favorite. “I slowed it down, and I think it turned out really well.” she said. Like so many performers, the pandemic brought both challenges for a newcomer to the local music scene but also opportunities–pushing her to take her own material to the next level. “It made me focus on what I’ve been putting off for so long. It was a lot of hard work,” she MARCH 2022
said. “I’m so glad I did it–pushing my music and coming into my own as an artist.” But Fox still loves playing covers at live shows, a chance to reconnect with her favorites from Fleetwood Mac to Lucinda Williams. “Everybody starts out playing covers, and I really love it because it gives me a chance to play the songs that made me want to be a songwriter,” she said. “I put my own spin on it.” Fox now has eight originals woven into her set— tunes that regular fans know and love. She’s also starting to get regional radio airplay. Last summer, Frederick, Maryland’s Free Country 99.9 played “Give It a Try” several times ahead of Fox’s performance at the city’s In The Streets festival. “It was the best feeling to sit in the car and hear myself on the radio,” Fox said. Fox is working on a new song with Wright and getting ready to release another single. She has Loudoun shows booked every week through mid-March and is waiting for her big night at the Wammies. “I’m so humbled and honored,” she said. “It means a lot to me that I got both nominations. I’ve worked so hard to get out there and spread my music.” CATCH MELISSA QUINN FOX Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at Social House Ashburn and Saturday, March 12 at 6 p.m. at Vanish. The Legwarmers will return to the Tarara Summer Concert Series stage July 2.

Tarara Concert Series Gears up for 2022 What began with two guitar players entertaining on the back deck at Tarara Vineyards in 1999 has turned into one of the most popular—and longest running—live music festivals in the region. This year marks the 23rd season of the Tarara Summer Concert Series. Promoter Rusty Foster plans an 18-week season featuring some of the most popular bands in the history of the award-winning music festival—kicking off with The Reflex on Saturday, May 28, Memorial Day weekend. “This is the first year we’ve been able to host a full and normal concert season since 2019, and this year’s lineup of bands is by far the most talented and diverse we’ve ever scheduled,” said Foster, president of Events by Bow Tie, which produces the Series. 6
Attendees are encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs, or they may partake of one of the food trucks on site. No outside alcohol is permitted per ABC regulations, but there is plenty of wine to purchase, and beer from Loudoun Brewing Company is available. In addition, families and businesses may rent the private tents for birthday parties, reunions, girls/guys nights out, and/or company picnics or celebrations. Tarara Vineyards is located about 10 minutes north of Leesburg on Lucketts Road. Tickets range from $10 to $25, with Concert Club Passes for the entire season available for $135.

WINE
Loudoun Wineries Collaborate on New Vintage Eight Loudoun County wineries have collaborated on a new blend, the 2020 Valle Tranquilo. Notaviva Farm Brewery and Winery, Bozzo Family Vineyards, Breaux Vineyards, Hillsborough Winery & Brewery, 868 Estate Vineyards, Maggie Malick’s Wine Caves, Doukenie Winery, and Two Twisted Posts Winery each contributed estate-grown Loudoun County wines. They created a bold red blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat, which they described as a full-bodied and complex wine. “The wine business is not just about business; primarily, it’s about passion,” Steve Bozzo of Bozzo Family Vineyards said. “The 2020 Valle Tranquilo is about the shared passion of the people who own, operate, make, and offer wine at eight wineries in Loudoun Heights, who came together to produce a wonderful new complex red wine blend. Now, that’s exciting.” The wineries came together under the Loudoun Heights Agritourism Council, not-for-profit organization to promote the marketing, sale, purchase, and use of farm-based or rural products and services, and to improve business conditions for farm-based and rural businesses. The group also includes Kalero Vineyards and Event Venue. It is the wineries’ second collaborative vintage. This time, the label was decided during a competition in spring 2021. Loudoun artist Jill Brabant’s Bold Blend was selected from among the 30 entries. “It was wonderful to have so many winemakers come together to create the new vintage of the Valle Tranquilo,” Hillsborough Winery and Brewery owner and winemaker Kerem Baki said. “Our process narrowed down the choices to two blends, but in the end, there was overwhelming agreement on which one 10

we loved—a true ‘winemaker’s blend,’ complex and nuanced. It really exemplifies the great wine that is being produced in the Loudoun Heights terroir and the friendship between the vineyards.” Last month, 192 cases of 2020 Valle Tranquilo were released into the tasting rooms of Loudoun Heights Agritourism Council members. A portion of the proceeds will support future initiatives of the council, including fundraising for charitable causes in Loudoun County.

ART SCENE
In a scene from his film Arcola Courters, Mike Ellison sits next to an African drum inside the Arcola Quarters for the Enslaved near Aldie.
Tribute to Enslaved Ancestors Wins at Purcellville’s Cabin Fever Film Fest BY NORMAN K. STYER
A short film calling attention to the Arcola Quarters for the Enslaved took the top prize at the fifth annual Cabin Fever Film Fest. Actor and recording artist Mike Ellison’s “Arcola Courters” won the Best of Loudoun-focused Film prize from Visit Loudoun. Born in Ethiopia, Ellison employs entertainment as a vehicle to promote education and health initiatives throughout the United States and in his native country. His film, “Arcola Courters,” shows Ellis making a visit to the building, a rare remaining home of enslaved people who worked the plantations in the region, with the narration consisting of a poem he wrote about the life endured within its walls, praising ancestors who lived there, and expressing hope for coming justice. While it is important to now acknowledge the past injustices, Ellis said he is seeking to use his art to provoke dialogue that corrects generational wrongs with tangible rights. 12
“I think that is important. I don’t think we’re talking about two different messages. We’re preserving history—its good, its bad, its beautiful, its ugly. However, it is ours, Americans, all of ours and it is ours to do with what we want. And that can be beautiful, or it can be ugly, or it can be positive or it can be negative,” Ellis said. “This place and this space is beautiful and positive, and I believe that will carry on for our beautiful county and our beautiful state and our beautiful country.” The film, Arcola Courters, can be viewed on YouTube. The Arcola Quarters for the Enslaved is a county-owned property that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and Virginia Historic Landmarks Registry. The structure was proffered to the county by the developer Hazout SA. The Friends of the Slave Quarters is leading the effort to preserve the building and develop programs to increase public awareness and support educational activities regarding Loudoun County’s African-American history.
