DESTINATIONS After a date night experience in a different market, Tara and Alan Radney knew a once they wanted to bring the sport of axe throwing to Loudoun. Their dream has been realized with the opening of Axes and Os in Sterling. TUNES Expanding efforts to return to a sense of normalcy, performers are returning to winery and brewery circuit, and— hopefully—bigger shows are on the way.

It’s Time to Branch Out Drive west down John Wolford Road near Waterford, one of dozens of scenic back roads through the horse farms and wheat fields of western Loudoun, and a surreal sight soon appears on the right: half a dozen tables set under the shade of what look like giant ship sails. Sitting at benches under those sails–ochrecolored to blend in with the rural landscape— drinkers are sipping cool glasses of farm-brewed ale, eating juicy Cuban sandwiches and watching the sun fall over the barley fields. Welcome to Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery’s expanded extra-shade social distance seating. “We wanted people to feel safe and still have fun, so we tripled our outdoor shaded area,” said brewery owner Bonnie Branding. “Our guests can now book a table online, order beer and food on their cell phones from their table and pick their orders up at ‘service stations’ six feet away.” If there’s still too much heat under the sails, there’s extra seating in a barn on the property and five tables under gazebos—all at least eight feet apart. Not a bad way to reacquaint oneself with a brewery. As Loudoun reopens, the desire to branch out and take a dirt road to your favorite winery or beer garden, dine at a restaurant, or explore a historic downtown has never been greater. Indeed, Branch Out is the name of a new Visit Loudoun marketing campaign urging residents and regional visitors to explore the attractions not far from their own backyards. Wheatland Spring is not the only business catering to pent-up demand—while keeping customers safe. Bluemont Vineyard recently unveiled “Rent a Row”—a new reservation option at the winery. The “row” in question happens to be a column of Norton grapes in the vineyard below the tasting room.

Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery near Waterford is among Loudoun’s craft beverage destinations that offer ample outdoor spaces with coronavirus-conscious procedures in place to keep visitors safe.

and wine down,” said General Manager Hailey Zurschmeide. To ensure social distancing, other “renters” are either placed at the opposite end of a row or allocated a separate column in the vines. “It’s turning out to be as popular as our Chef’s Table dinners—and highly Instagrammable,” Zurschmeide said. Of course, you don’t need a reservation system to reacquaint yourself with your favorite parts of Loudoun. At Beaverdam Reservoir in Brambleton fish, kayak, paddleboard or hike winding waterfront trails of the 1,000-acre park, while over in Leesburg explore the historic downtown by downloading the Leesburg Walking Tour App. There are three self-guided walks to choose from, including an African American History Tour of the historic county seat. The time is now to support Loudoun’s tourism attractions and towns; the time is now to branch out. Patrons throw axes at wooden targets at Axes and O’s, Sterling’s new axe-throwing bar.

Axe Throwing Bar Opens in Sterling BY RENSS GREENE

If you’re looking for a safe, fun night out, consider having a drink and throwing some axes. Axes and O’s, Sterling’s long-anticipated axethrowing bar, opened July 23. There, guests can have a drink, have a meal, and unwind by throwing axes at wooden targets with pointers from axe-throwing coaches. Co-founder and CEO Tara Hampton-Radney said the idea came to her and her husband Alan Radney after she took him axe throwing elsewhere. “Within five minutes of walking in, I looked at him and I said, ‘I want to open one of these,” Hampton-Radney said. “He thought it was crazy, I convinced him, and here we are.” In at least one way, she is unusually qualified to open a business in the middle of a pandemic— Hampton-Radney’s last job was as a nurse, including as an infection control nurse. 6

“We’re following a disinfection schedule that would probably rival most hospitals,” she said, including sanitizing all surfaces and axe handles between uses and every two hours. Staff members are masked up and hand sanitizer is available, and everyone coming in the door is asked to use it when they walk in. “We picked the absolute worst time ever to open a business, in the middle of a pandemic, but you know what? We’re still here, and we’re not going anywhere,” Hampton-Radney said. The business already built up a dedicated following and Axes and O’s is a member of the World Axe Throwing League, which Alan Radney called “the NFL of axe throwing.” That also means axe throwers can range from a casual night out to competing more seriously in the league. It is the second axe throwing venue in Loudoun— Autobahn Indoor Speedway & Events, also in Sterling, also has axe throwing. Visit Axes and O’s at 21680 Ridgetop Circle, Suite 125 in Sterling, or online at axesandos.com.

Getting Back on Stage BY NORMAN K. STYER

Loudoun’s businesses have proceeded cautiously as the region moved into the Phase Three reopening following the March shutdown in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. At breweries, wineries and many restaurants around the county that has meant a return to live music performances. Many locations are operating with limited capacity, even requiring reservations for their ample outdoor spaces. But they’ve also reopened their stages allowing the region’s strong roster of performers to move from months of online concerts to reconnect with their audiences in person, if only at a CDC-compliant distance. The county’s larger performance venues have remained dark, but that, too, may be changing. The Franklin Park Arts Center this month will resume some in-person activities, including its annual Tanabata Celebration, which will be held outdoors Aug. 9. At the Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg shows have been canceled since March. Now, the managers are looking for ways to ensure shows can resume safely—and for nationally touring acts to get back on the road. ‘80s hitmakers Kix provided a bit of AUGUST 2020

dry run during the venue’s first return concert July 24, performing at a private party with a small audience. Assuming the coronavirus recovery stays on track, the venue plans to welcome the Electric Lynne Orchestra, The Amish Outlaws, Live Wire and the Bodeans in September. Although performances around the county have mainly been limited to small stages, some local favorites joined forces for a larger festival-style event July 25 in a backyard field near Leesburg. Singer/songwriter Juliana MacDowell organized the event with the help of her Conk Town Music record label and was joined by saxophonist Ron Holloway, the Short Hill Mountain Boys and the Darby Brothers. It was the largest gathering of Loudoun music fans in months, and required patrons to stay physical distanced in designated sitting/picnic/dancing areas. A common theme at each gathering is the performers and the fans are equally thankful and enthusiastic for the opportunity to meet in person once again.

Haymarket’s Mercury Avenue was the first band to take the Nectar Stage at Crooked Run Brewing’s Sterling tasting room as the region emerged from the COVID-19 shutdown.

BREWS

Even During Pandemic, Crooked Run Boosts Music Offerings BY MARTIN BONICA

In mid-March, Northern Virginia’s music venues, along with most others in the world, went quiet. As part of Virginia’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, public gatherings of more than 10 people were banned on March 17, making concerts logistically impossible. Since mid-June, Virginia—and Loudoun County— has been on a cautious reopening path. On June 20, Loudoun County saw one of its first live concerts since the crisis began, when Haymarket duo Mercury Avenue played a gig at Crooked Run Brewing in Sterling. Crooked Run closed both of its tasting rooms— both its larger Sterling space and its smaller, original location in Leesburg—in March. Like many restaurants, wineries and breweries, the 10

company worked to sustain itself with curbside pickup and delivery, but those venues are known for more than great food and craft beverages. “We make really great beer, but we don’t do as much distribution,” said Crooked Run General manager Zach Cannon. “We’re known for being a great place to gather.” Crooked Run’s Leesburg location became a hot spot for painters and musicians soon after it opened in 2013, and the larger Sterling location embraced that same ethos. “One of the things we started doing in 2017 was featuring local artists every month,” Cannon said. “We started bringing in musicians, because what’s really cool about a musician is that they’re going to bring their own group of friends, their own aesthetic, and their own kind of vibe to a place, and it’s this great injection of energy that happens at a place.”

CROOKED RUN

Crooked Run searched for new ways to engage its customers during the shutdown, with its stage in Sterling and patio in Leesburg closed. Local musicians, including Nathaniel Davis, Pool Boys, Torrey B, and Kevin Knight, performed shows broadcast from their homes, and were signal-boosted by Crooked Run’s social media presence. “It made me feel really good, when I couldn’t get outside and we couldn’t do all this stuff, to see familiar faces, and to see in the chats of the livestream the people who would have been in our tasting room, enjoying that show,” Cannon said. As Northern Virginia entered the second phase of reopening in June, Crooked Run decided it could safely host musicians once again. “We want to do as much as we could while being as safe as possible. I am pretty confident because of how well we’ve done keeping up with the tasting room so far,” Cannon said. On the tasting room, “We have been very successful keeping up with sanitation practices and enforcing a mask policy. We’ve required a mask to enter the property since phase one, even though it was only outdoor seating.” Crooked Run Sterling books and promotes its shows months in advance; and when the brewery chose to reopen its stage, it was able to host a band that it had booked before the pandemic began. Mercury Avenue had been scheduled to play since earlier in the year, and their show was among the first not to be canceled. “I felt that we had the best practices in place to do it safely, and I wanted to honor my commitment to someone I already had a booking with,” says Cannon. “We worked it out, and Mercury Avenue is going to be the first band that gets on our stage.” Mercury Avenue is a duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Sophia Patchan and drummer Jackson Ledbetter, hailing from Haymarket. The band has been a fixture on the local restaurant, winery, and brewery scene since its lineup solidified in early 2019, and expected a busy itinerary during the summer of 2020. “We were booked throughout the whole spring and summer, but a lot of them got canceled,” Patchan said. AUGUST 2020

Ledbetter acknowledges that many of the performers on Loudoun’s dynamic live-music scene were hard-hit by the closure. “It’s a source of income, but we’re still young enough that we’re not dependent on it,” he said. “All the other adult musicians, a lot of them, it’s their fulltime job playing out in the circuit and booking for venues. Their whole source of income, or at least a good chunk of it, has been stopped because of this.” Even amid the coronavirus outbreak, Cannon aspires to expand Crooked Run’s reach as a concert space. “The last couple of months have been a lot of learning on the fly and adapting to changes. I suddenly am a video editor now,” he said. “It has been a learning process, but it has also really given us some tools to add to our toolbox that we can use in the future. Absolutely, if there is a second wave, or a second quarantine, we would continue to do livestreams individually of artists from their houses.” Beyond using Crooked Run’s new online presence to weather a possible second shutdown, Cannon hopes to use it to bring the venue to more people. “One thing that we’d really like to do is livestream the show that’s happening in our tasting room for the people who are not at our tasting room. For the people who don’t feel safe going out, they can still turn on our Facebook and see what’s going on on the Nectar stage.” LEESBURG LOCATION (571) 375-2652 205 Harrison St. Se Leesburg, Va 20175 STERLING LOCATION (571) 375-2652 22455 Davis Dr. Ste 120 Sterling, Va 20164
