From Harvest to Horrors, Loudoun’s October Highlights The sun is setting over the Blue Ridge, a gentle breeze is blowing through autumnal forests and in the cascading gardens of a historic Loudoun estate, two dozen couples are dancing the Foxtrot to Frank Sinatra’s “It Was a Very Good Year.”

online, and the 2020 Loudoun Fall Farm Tour.

Welcome to the Fall 2020 Edition of Dance King Studio’s “Sweetheart Sunset Date” dance series at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens. Brainchild of Dance King instructors Adam King and April Rodriguez, the series began during lockdown as a fun, socially distanced way to get together safely—and learn a few moves. Tickets cost $50 per couple and guests bring their own blankets, chairs, food and wine. “Saturday, October 10th is the last of the series,” said Rodriguez, who along with King gives swing and foxtrot lessons to the group at the start of the event, and one-on-one instruction as the sun goes down. “With the leaves turning it will be more beautiful than ever.” Loudoun is gorgeous in the fall. The air has turned crisp and cool, morning mists hang in the valleys and the landscape—green farm fields offset by explosions of burnt yellow and salmon red forests—resembles an oil painting. It’s a good time to branch out and explore the outdoors. “It’s harvest season (at the vineyards), the foliage is stunning and most wineries will be releasing their new reds from 2018 and 2019,” said Aimee Henkle, chair of the Loudoun Wineries Association. October, which is Virginia Wine Month, also sees the 6th annual Loudoun Wine Awards showcasing the best wines in the county. The event will be streamed live on the LWA’s Facebook page on Oct.1.

Another exciting in-person event will take place Oct. 11 at Celebrations Farm in Bluemont. Leading Virginia chefs and farmers will come together on the sweeping lawns for Pickled & Roasted: An Autumn Open Air Culinary Experience, part of the Roots to Table series created by Taste of Blue Ridge founder and owner Nancy Craun. The event will feature Loudoun’s own Erik FoxxNettnin (The Polished Foxx), Jeremy Thrasher (West End Wine Bar) and Jason Reaves (pastry chef at Salamander Resort & Spa) who will partner with regional farmers to cook unique dishes and discuss fresh produce. No harvest season is complete without pumpkin picking and Halloween haunts. Temple Hall Farm near Lucketts will host a pick-your-own pumpkin patch this year while the Loudoun Museum will offer its Hauntings Tour Oct. 16 and 17, taking visitors to historic homes and businesses where storytellers share the ghostly tales of the town. And, no fall in Loudoun is complete without The Arc of Loudoun’s Shocktober, which features one of the scariest haunted houses in the country. This year, take a terror-filled, two-hour tour of the house virtually or attend classes that range from creating creepy home décor to how to apply haunt makeup. Happy harvest!

Also going virtual is the Waterford Fair, which will showcase the work of several skilled artisans 4

Virts Family to Open Harvest Gap Brewery the property for brewing next spring.

BY PATRICK SZABO

A new brewery is opening in western Loudoun— this one on property that thousands of people have already visited. Mike Virts, the son of the couple behind the Virts Family Farm roadside farm store off Rt. 9 near Hillsboro, is opening Harvest Gap Brewery on the same location this month. Virts said he and his brewer, William Jones of the now-closed Wicked Barn Brewery in Culpeper, have been brewing for months, with recipes including a nitro milk stout, a double IPA, an American brown ale, a seasonal pumpkin ale and a Märzen Oktoberfest. They’re also looking to collaborate with a couple of Loudoun favorites, Lost Rhino Brewing Co. and Beltway Brewing Co. The beer is brewed using the barley Virts has been growing on the property to feed his cattle for the past decade. Virts and Jones are using a small-barrel brewing system with only three fermenters. They’re also going to plant hops on 6

Visitors to the brewery can still expect a taste of the former Virts Family Farm, since they’re still planning to sell ice cream, root beer and other popular items from the farm store, including the beef Virts raises. Inside, there will be seating for up to 80 people, depending on COVID-19related regulations. That’s not all visitors will have. Eventually, Virts wants to make cider and include a winery on the property. To do that, he said he would collaborate with area wineries. Virts said that when his family closed their farm store last December after about two years of operation, he realized the time was right to move forward with the brewery project. Harvest Gap Brewer is located at 15485 Purcellville Road near Hillsboro.

868 winemaker Carl DiManno, Visit Loudoun President Beth Erickson and Black Hoof Brewing co-owner Bill Haase hold up the highest awards in the state for winemaking and brewing, in downtown Leesburg.

Best Cups Around: Loudoun Unites Commonwealth’s Wine, Beer Trophies BY RENSS GREENE

There’s no better place to have a drink than Loudoun—and there are trophies to prove it. This year, the highest awards in the state for both winemaking and brewing—the Governor’s Cup and Best in Show at the Virginia Craft Beer Cup—are in the hands of Loudoun crafters. In February, 868 Estate Vineyards, north of Hillsboro, took home the Governor’s Cup for winemaker Carl DiManno’s 2017 Vidal Blanc Passito. And on Aug. 30, co-owner Bill Haase, head brewer James Sandoval and the rest of the team at Leesburg’s Black Hoof Brewing Company found out they had won Best in Show at the Craft Beer Cup for their Muzzle Loader Munich Dunkel. It is only the second time since the Virginia Craft Beer Cup began in 2012 that both cups have been in the same county. In 2016, James 10

River Brewery and Keswick Vineyards, both in Albemarle County, won their respective cups. And it is also not the first time since then a Loudoun winemaker won the Governor’s Cup. The next year, in 2017, the Barns at Hamilton Station Vineyards took home the cup for its 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, presaging Loudoun’s primacy in Virginia’s craft beverage scene this year. Loudoun beers and wines also consistently score well in those competitions, which each hand out awards for a variety of styles of beer or wine. Perhaps appropriately for Loudoun, which is also known for its high-tech industries, both DiManno and Haase put their scientific backgrounds into their craft. DiManno is a former chemical engineer who fell in love with wine while working for an oil company, and has said he embraces the scientific spirit of trial and error in his work. Haase is a water engineer

Schmidt’s Barbecue Opens Downtown BY KARA C. RODRIGUEZ

The cuisine scene in Leesburg’s historic district is getting another—decidedly tangy—flavor. Nils and Olivia Schnibbe, the owners of 14 Loudoun and SideBar in Leesburg, along with More Better in Round Hill, have opened Schmidt’s Barbecue at their 14 Loudoun St. property. Schmidt’s menu caters to barbecue enthusiasts from all regions of the county. Olivia Schnibbe points to the transplant nature of the Northern Virginia region, and says Schmidt’s menu offers tastes reminiscent of the U.S.’ best barbecue regions. There are even some special twists, with smoked fruits and vegetables accompanying staple dishes and drinks, like the Hawaiian burger with smoked pineapple on top or smoked salmon. Barbecue enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with staples like pulled pork and chicken, ribs, and smoked chicken wings. Both credited Loudoun’s people for the good wine and beer. “Most people ask, what’s in the soil?” DiManno said. “I don’t know that the soil’s all that remarkable, I think we just brought in a lot of great talent.” He mentioned other great Loudoun winemakers, like Fabbioli Cellars’ Doug Fabbioli. “I think [it’s] getting it right for the location, as far as what we plant, the spacing and the design, and then having really talented winemakers, who know how to work with that fruit.” “Everybody’s brewing really good beer in OCTOBER 2020

evenings. The menu also will be available for curbside, to-go and delivery. The Schnibbes are excited about debuting another new food concept. They are bringing over their smoker and equipment from Morven Park, where they have run the café for the past several years, to use at Schmidt’s. “We’ve always had barbecue in the back of our minds,” Olivia Schnibbe said. “And we love it,” Nils Schnibbe quickly added. Northern Virginia, and we push each other to brew better beer,” Haase said—stepping away briefly from a meeting with Dog Money Brewing owner and brewer Dean Lake. Haase pointed to the Loudoun County Brewers Association, which meets quarterly: “We get to sit down with all the other owners and either collaborate or try to determine what’s best for us as a group, but also we get to try each other’s beers. That camaraderie, it helps us build a bond, but it also develops some really good, clean fun competition.” While there apparently is no equivalent statewide award for distillers, if there was, Loudoun would likely be a strong contender there, too—Catoctin Creek Distillery in Purcellville claims to have the most awarded spirits in Virginia, with its flagship Roundstone Rye winning gold medals in competitions around the world year after year.

B Chord’s Safe Stage Helps Get Bands Back on the Road BY JAN MERCKER Contributed

The popular jam band Railroad Earth should have been playing the storied 9,500-seat Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado last month. But COVID threw a wrench in those plans. Instead, they’ll be return to live gigs for the first time since March with three days of outdoor shows at a low-key venue in rural western Loudoun. Railroad Earth is slated to perform at Loudoun’s B Chord Brewing Oct. 1-3. It’s a huge booking coup for the farm brewery and music venue west of Round Hill. And it is a gig that wouldn’t even have been on the radar screen for this national touring act a year ago. But with the coronavirus shutting down the live music scene around the country, B Chord’s wide-open spaces are pulling in big acts willing to play for much smaller crowds. “Fish swim, birds fly, musicians play music. ... It’s largely about having the band go play some music because it’s important,” said Tim Carbone, Railroad Earth’s violin and electric guitar player and a founding member. The band hasn’t had an opportunity to play together since March, Carbone said, and they’re thrilled to be able to reconnect—and get back in front of their devoted following. “We’re looking forward to seeing each other and playing music together again. Right behind that is to play music in front of our fans because they’re a big part of our lives,” Carbone said. B Chord owner Marty Dougherty said the 64-acre brewery has worked hard to build a reputation as a COVID-safe venue. With safety in mind, more national acts are eager to play outdoor venues, and they’re ready to be flexible. “They’re not making the kind of money they 12

Tim Carone and his Railroad Earth bandmates are regrouping for their first COVID-era concerts at B Chord Brewing Company this month.

would at other venues [before COVID],” Dougherty said. “But musicians are feeling a need to get out and play.” Bluegrass legend Sam Bush played a sold-out show at B Chord last month. And on the heels the Railroad Earth shows, the iconic bluegrass musician Del McCoury plays a sellout on Oct. 4. The show is a huge accomplishment for a relatively small rural venue. “He’s royalty,” Dougherty said. For Dougherty, B Chord’s brewer, the venue has always been a brewery first, and he’s proud of a strong local fan base who simply come for the beer. But music was always slated to be at the heart of B Chord’s mission. Dougherty and business partner Aaron Gilman opened the brewery in 2018 with a professional sound stage. The venue introduced ticketed shows featuring top regional talent while continuing free shows with smaller acts aimed at locals. Dougherty said the new interest in the venue from national touring acts is directly related to the brewery’s reputation for safety, plenty of room for social distancing and enforcing mask compliance. It’s all about keeping audience members safe and also making musicians feel safe. “We’re doing the best we can. The venue seems to be doing the best they can,” he said. “We feel pretty comfortable with the situation,” Carbone said. Keep abreast of upcoming shows facebook.com/

THE TALLY HO IS BACK Loudoun’s music scene has taken another step toward normalcy with the reopening of the Tally Ho Theater for its first public shows since entertainment venues were shut down in March to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Fans coming through the doors will find a decidedly different setting inside, according to manager Jack Devine. First, ticket sales will be limited, keeping crowd caps to around 150 people. There will be temperature checks at the door and masks required inside. Also, all the shows will be fully seated. The usually open dance floor as well as the upper level viewing areas are now filled with tables and chairs—spaced to meet physical distancing guidelines. It will be assigned seating, with member of each group expected to stay in their pod space.

As is the case at other Loudoun hospitality venues, the emphasis will be on keeping visitors, the staff, and the bands safe. The Amish Outlaws and Live Wire, an AC/ DC tribute band, performed during the opening weekend Sept. 18-19. Like most touring acts across the country, Devine said, the bands are happy to be getting back to work. But it will be a learning process for the acts and the venues as they deal with fewer shows and smaller crowds.
