Instead of hitting the road this year, take the week to explore your own back yard and experience fun, family adventures right here in Loudoun. Any budding Tiger Woods in the family? Dulles Golf Center & Sports Park in Sterling has a driving range, an 18-hole mini golf course, a pro shop and pro golf lessons for parents and children. Smaller kids can search for gems in the Rocky Cove Mining Company mining sluice if golf’s not for them, and the baseball batting cages should open in April.

There’s no bonding experiences quite like the adrenaline rush of paintball. Pev’s Paintball Park off Route 15 near Aldie is set over 48 acres with 14 different themed fields in which to “capture the flag.” They include a battle-scarred town built for urban warfare, a fortress with prison style guard towers and a frontier-like “borderland” with hilly terrain, brush and logs. There’s Pee Wee Paintball for kids as young as five and traditional paintball for adults, so it’s a game the whole family can play. If you’re more inclined to enjoy the arts, Loudoun has that covered, too. Stagecoach Theatre Company in Sterling presents “The Hamilton Murders” over six nights in March, a play exploring conspiracies and alternative histories surrounding the death by duel of the celebrated Founding Father. In Purcellville, Franklin Park Arts Center stages its “Music for Dessert” concert series on Tuesdays and Saturdays, featuring an array of performers. For families with younger kids, the arts center will also host a series of puppet shows throughout the month. Over in Leesburg meanwhile, put 4

some rhythm and pep in your family’s step by registering for Dance King Studios weekly Monday night “Learn to Dance … Beginner’s Night,” where skilled pros teach Salsa and Dominican Bachata Swing. It’ll give your young ones some moves to show off when they return to class. At some point you will want to drink some wine and let the young ones run loose. On March 12, 13 and 14, in honor of Pi Day (3/14…) 868 Estate Vineyards hosts Cutie Pies & Wine Tasting: pairings of four 868 vintages with four mini pies from a local baker. Bring a picnic and let the kids enjoy some fresh air while you sip Chardonel and snack Pecan Pie around a firepit. For a more strenuous outdoor experience, put your hiking boots on and visit the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship, a nonprofit that manages 900 acres of trails, forest and woodland in the Blue Ridge. Play groups for small kids to learn about the great outdoors are also available here. Back in Leesburg, walk the grounds and landscaped gardens of historic Morven Park. The flowers are about to pop and while the main Davis Mansion remains closed, the Winmill Carriage Museum re-opens March 6. Now that’s what we call a spring break. Foxx Thrives with Pandemic Pivot BY JAN MERCKER

For Loudoun chef Erik Foxx, it’s all about relationships—with customers and with the local suppliers he’s built close contacts with over the past decade. The longtime chef at Magnolias at The Mill in Purcellville is taking those relationships to a new model as the COVID pandemic rocks the restaurant industry nationwide. His new venture, The Polished Foxx, opened last summer and has ramped up in recent months with holiday offerings and partnerships with area wineries and breweries. “I saw the restaurant industry changing before my eyes,” Foxx said. “I wanted to make sure that after 30 years of doing nothing but hospitality that I continue to teach, to make my mark.” Foxx launched his new business last summer, with a focus on catering on both a large and small scale, including in-home dinners for private clients and holiday and family meals to go. The operation is based out of Leesburg’s 6

ChefScape food hall and shared kitchen space. Foxx made the decision to shift gears after several challenging months of working to keep Magnolias afloat during the early days of the COVID lockdown. “It was very awakening, it was very challenging. ... We decided as a kitchen team that we were going to do the work, keep food going, wash the dishes, do everything to keep the place in good standing,” he said. But after months of intense pressure, Foxx had a lightbulb moment after an especially challenging shift. “I looked at the sky and said if I’m going to do all this, I’m going to do it for my family. I’m going to have more control over it. ... I wanted to be mobile and do my thing and really market the county as a place where you can get the best of the best.” Foxx created his company early in the summer and left Magnolias at the end of August. The Polished Foxx offers traditional large-scale catering, but also moves into the COVIDinspired niche of private dinners—for two

or 20—and embraces the carry-out family meal trend that has surged in the last year. Working with the LoudounGo local shopping marketplace, Foxx has also emerged as a leader at the ChefScape food incubator, as tenants seek to breathe new life into the space. Last month, Foxx launched a new pop-up the Foxx on the Rocks Raw Bar & Fishmonger, serving seafood dishes, including oysters on the half shell, blackened gulf shrimp, scallops and mussels. Foxx grew up in southern Maryland before moving to Northern Virginia as a teen and scoring his first restaurant job at the Fuddruckers in Herndon, which his father opened. At the time, Fuddruckers was a new concept in the fast casual movement, a burger joint known for grinding its own beef and baking fresh buns. The from-scratch approach immediately appealed to Foxx. He then moved onto a kitchen manager job at the Herndon Outback Steakhouse, the chain’s first location in Virginia, before snagging a gig with the Hyatt Regency hotel chain, another significant step in his culinary training. “I was able to bounce around from hotel to hotel and learn classic techniques,” he said. Foxx went on to earn an associate’s degree for the business side of his career but emphasizes that his culinary training is 100% self-taught on the job. “Within the kitchen, everything was trial and error and being able to learn from some great folks,” he said. As Foxx moved west into Loudoun, he got his first head chef job at the old mansion house at Leesburg’s Carradoc Hall, then moved on to run the kitchen at Andy Ghuzlan’s now-closed Bacchus Cafe in Leesburg. “That was my first laboratory ... and it was off to the races,” Foxx said. Foxx caught the attention of DC-area celebrity chef Robert Wiedmaier, owner of DC’s Brasserie Beck and numerous other DMV hotspots, opening several restaurants for Wiedmaier’s group. But when the management of Tuskies Restaurant Group called after longtime executive chef Mark Marrocco left Magnolias to start Leesburg Public House, it was an offer Foxx couldn’t turn down. He had moved to Winchester with his wife and four children and MARCH 2021

couldn’t pass up a juicy opportunity to ditch the commute and focus on all things local. “When I realized I could change my work environment from concrete to the Shenandoah Valley and spend three hours less in the car— which meant three hours more with the family— it was kind of a no brainer,” Foxx said. Foxx worked to expand on Magnolias’ reputation for bringing upscale but approachable cuisine to western Loudoun and build relationships with local farmers. “I really got an idea of what western Loudoun means to people from a food standpoint. I was able to kind of push the envelope a little and bring everybody along. At Magnolia’s you have to have a menu that supports the son that’s visiting from DC but also the grandma who’s lived here her whole life,” Foxx said. “It really taught me how to do more. It taught me how to take on more.” Foxx also developed his passion for sourcing local, connecting with local farmers and incorporating their products into his cuisine, balancing the appeal of farm to table with the higher cost of locally sourced ingredients. “Being at Magnolias allowed me to learn how to buy more expensive products and still remain profitable,” he said. “I just became an extension of the farmers.” And local sourcing remains a priority at The Polished Foxx. “Sourcing locally is a trend. It’s always been for me. I really wanted to make sure that I could still embody being a stream for local producers through me to the customers,” he said. “Our support comes from the community, which means our support needs to go to the community—whether it’s the company that makes my T-shirts or farmer David who grows my microgreens. All that money should go back into the community that we’re in.” “Being smart about planning out your purchases is where that starts. The Appalachian Trail Through Artists’ Eyes Artists have until March 14 to drop off their submissions for the Round Hill’s fourth annual Round Hill’s Appalachian Trail Art Show. The exhibit celebrates the 2,200-mile trail on Loudoun’s western boundary as well as the great outdoors generally. Starting March 19, the exhibit will be on display at the Round Hill Art Center. The exhibit will be open daily noon to 4 p.m. through April 30. The works also may be viewed online at roundhill.at/art. The purpose of the show is to broaden public awareness and appreciation of the Appalachian Trail and the wild nature of the Blue Ridge. It is part of the Town of Round Hill’s effort to promote outdoor recreation and its status as an Appalachian Trail Community. Round Hill is one of 47 jurisdictions along the trail, and one of 16 in Virginia, that actively promote and protect it through the program. The Round Hill Art Center is located at 35246 Harry Byrd Hwy #170, just west of Round Hill. 10

Graffiti Soundstage Finds Opening Doors

The hard-rocking Loudoun-based trio Graffiti Soundstage was just hitting its stride when COVID shook the worldwide music scene. But while the young musicians have shifted gears, they haven’t stopped. They’ve spent the past year building their own sound that pays homage to their classic rock heroes. And while the pandemic has slowed things down, it also has opened a few doors. Graffiti Soundstage was in the spotlight during January’s community showcase at Leesburg’s Tally Ho Theater. That venue, known for hosting bigname touring acts, has changed things up since reopening last summer after Virginia’s Phase 1 shutdown. With national acts rescheduling for later this year and beyond, there’s more room for up-and-coming local talent at smaller, socially distanced shows. For these three Ashburn and Sterling guys, who grew up with Rush and Led Zeppelin on their parents’ CD players and “Guitar Hero” on the Xbox, 2020 has been a year to create and record. The band released a four-track EP last summer and a new single “Black Leather Country” in December. With confident vocals from founder and lead singer Aidan Bashore and tight musicianship from guitarist Evan DeNicola and drummer Tommy Kowalski, the trio knows what it takes to craft a solid hard rock/heavy pop song. “What we want to do is just put as much stuff out there as we can, build a portfolio,” Bashore said. 12

Since Virginia relaxed rules for gatherings last summer, regional shows have slowly started to pick up. The band has plans for a solid performance schedule in 2021, even if that looks dramatically different from the pre-pandemic scene. The band members, who graduated from three different eastern Loudoun high schools, are now working and attending community college, while putting their work with the band front and center. Bashore said their goal is to make it to Nashville within the next two years. In recent months, the group has had limited but meaningful opportunities to play live, including two Tally Ho showcases. And spring is looking up for live shows. In April, the band is slated to play The Renegade in Arlington, a restaurant and performance space that opened in 2019 with a focus on spotlighting young and up-and-coming musicians. But instead of packed rooms, the young musicians are getting used to assigned seating and socially distanced shows. “It’s just something that we’re going to have to get used to for a while,” DeNicola said. “Seeing Tally Ho with seats everywhere isn’t something you usually see. Franklin Park Art Center Serving Up Music for Dessert The Franklin Park Arts Center is kicking off a new live music series both in-person and virtual audiences. During the Music for Dessert concerts, performers will share their music and their favorite dessert recipes. Most performers are part of the Virginia Commission for the Arts Touring Roster. In-person tickets are limited to 50 people; virtual audiences can enjoy the live-streamed concert at the same time from home and are encouraged to make the musician’s favorite dessert to enjoy with the concert. Dessert recipes will be shared with all ticket holders. Tickets are $15 in person and $8 for the livestream.

MORVEN PARK Morven Park is a 1,000-acre historic estate on the edge of Leesburg that was home to Virginia governor and agricultural pioneer Westmoreland Davis.
