27th Annual Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival Runs April 22-23 BY MARGARET MORTON SPRING HAS FINALLY SPRUNG—AND NOWHERE IS THAT MORE CELEBRATED THAN IN LEESBURG WITH THE ANNUAL FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL. For the town’s Parks and Recreation staff, the event is the culmination of a year of planning Loudoun’s largest annual community event. “We see it as the opening of spring,” Events Outreach Coordinator Linda Fountain said. And the public seems to agree, as more than 38,500 visitors flocked to the downtown historic district during last year’s event. Two days of perfect weather contributed to that record turnout, some 25,000 on Saturday alone. The festival comprises a six-block area of the downtown, framed by Leesburg’s historic buildings, dominated by its statuesque courthouse. That’s a setting that adds to the event’s attraction for visitors and vendors, alike. While this year’s festival is built on the triedand-true format that has been acknowledged with numerous awards over the past quarter century,
FYI HOURS 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday COST Suggested donation entrance of $3 PARKING Available in the town and county government garages accessed from Loudoun Street and at Ida Lee Park, where continuous shuttle service to the festival area is offered. there will be a few new components. Although the town staff has been fretting over the festival’s details for months, the public won’t get a glimpse of their work until Friday, April 21, when downtown streets will be closed for traffic and bustling crews will begin assembling the festival’s famed gardenscape. Six companies have entered this year’s landscaping competition and their elaborate displays form the festival’s core. Participating this year are 2016 festival winner Saxton Landscapes Inc., Amazing Earth Landscapes, Bainbridge Outdoor Design Build, Deckscapes of Virginia LLC, Homeland Contractors LLC, and The Pond Doctor. Their displays at the intersection of King and Market streets will be flanked by more than 125 vendors, offering everything from hard-to-find shrubs to the latest garden gadgets. The show opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and there will be an early smattering of festival veterans in search of a specific vendor or product to make a quick purchase as well as those who DOWNTOWN BLOOMS continues on page 4

like to spend time touring the offerings before the larger crowds arrive. By Saturday afternoon, the sight of King Street from north or south and Market Street east and west form a mind-boggling collage of colors and faces. The scene repeats on Sunday, and by Monday morning the streets are swept clean and the garden gives way to the typical happenings of the downtown business district. Through most of the weekend, the street will be filled from side to side with people—enjoying a day out in the sun (hopefully), sampling a variety of foods from vendors, and enjoying picnics while listening to live music on the courthouse square. A quieter spot on Cornwall Street features a supervised place for kids to do their own thing. In addition to games and paints to get messy with, they have their own entertainment stage. For adults, there’s the Beer Garden on the Town Green. This year, there will be at least six craft breweries. The entrance to the beer garden is $8, which includes a souvenir glass, and two tastings. Additional tastings are available for $2 each. And no one need go hungry at the festival, as 13 vendors are on hand to please every palate. Smoothies and fruit cups, ice cream, apple dumplings, kettle corn, steak and cheese, corn dogs, funnel cakes, gyros, chicken tenders, burritos, fried oysters, crab cakes, Thai beef teriyaki

and tacos—just some of the delicacies that will be on hand. There are also the many town restaurants to explore. The festival is a major “all-hands-on-deck” effort for town’s parks department, with Fountain leading the effort along with, Events Coordinator Barb Smith, who is the logistics and overall event coordinator, and Assistant Events Coordinator Ashton Echols. This is Echols’ first festival, having previously worked in the weddings and events business.

Smith is hoping for perfect weather so people can enjoy themselves. “They come for the experience,” she said. Both she and Fountain said Leesburg’s got a lot going on, and the festival is a perfect showcase for that. Echols is anticipating her first festival. “I’m a bit nervous,” she said, adding, “I’m looking forward to it.” mmorton@loudounnow.com

Vendors Come from Far Afield IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO SPRUCE UP YOUR BACKYARD, AND YOU CAN’T FIND IT AT THE LEESBURG FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL, IT MAY BE A LOST CAUSE. For two days, the streets in downtown Leesburg will be lined with nearly 130 horticultural vendors offering a greater assortment of plants than can be found in any area garden center. Others offer the latest gear and creative accessories for outdoor
living—garden art, stained glass, birdhouses, birdbaths, bat houses, pavers and more. Vendor selection can be a competitive process, with the event’s national reputation attracting interest from far beyond Loudoun’s boundaries. In fact, half of the vendors selected this year are from beyond Virginia’s border. Seventeen VENDORS continues on page 8

NONPROFITS SHOWCASED AT FESTIVAL While many vendors travel long distances to showcase their services at the festival, there will be many familiar local faces. Chief among them are representatives of seven nonprofit organizations who will have booths set up in the parking lot of the Downtown Station Post Office along Market St. The space is designed to help the charities get extra attention by sharing their stories to the weekend’s 40,000-visitor audience. This year, members of Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers, Bike Loudoun & Friends, Loudoun County Fire & Rescue, Loudoun Community Cat Coalition, Loudoun Lyme Disease, Friends of Leesburg Public Arts, and Loudoun Cares will be on site to answer questions and discuss volunteer opportunities.

other states will be represented in the 2017 roster. Pennsylvania has the most, with 15; 13 are from Maryland. Six are from New Jersey and five are coming up from North Carolina and down from New York. Also in the mix are vendors from
Missouri, Kansas, Michigan and Maine. Artists Patty Shepard is bringing her hand-woven straw baskets and fans from Kingsport, TN. Rich Borden, from East Haddam, CT, is bringing baskets and bowls hand-carved from cypress roots. Alice Calhoun is bringing her Copper Curls Sculpture garden faeries from Hermann, MO.

Plantmaster Glick Offers Presentations Friday, Saturday NATIVE PLANT-GROWER BARRY GLICK RETURNS TO THE LEESBURG FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL THIS YEAR AFTER A LONG ABSENCE. THIS TIME HE’LL BE A FEATURED SPEAKER RATHER THAN A STREET-SIDE VENDOR. Glick is well known for the extensive plant collection at his 65-acre, mountain-top Sunshine Farm & Gardens in Greenbrier County, WV. He has garnered a national reputation for his knowledge of native species and their propagation. He writes and lectures widely in the U.S. and abroad. Glick, whose woodlands plantings have been missed at the festival in recent years, will give two free presentations, including “Woodland Wonders from the Wild,” preceding the festival on Friday, April 21, and “The Joy of Propagation” set to take place during the festival, on Saturday, April 22.

Friday’s event will be held in Ida Lee Recreation Center’s Social Hall from 7-9 p.m., while Saturday’s talk and demonstration will begin at 11:45 a.m. from the presentation stage along East Market Street. There’s more than a little added incentive to attend Glick’s Friday night talk, says Leesburg Parks and Recreation Events and Community Outreach Manager Linda Fountain. The first 100 attendees will receive a free festival tote bag. “It’s really exciting—we often have 35,000 people show up [to the festival] but only about 6,000 tote bags and they’re highly sought after,” she said. “Come out and get one before everybody else.” Also on Friday, guests will be treated to a raffle of two individual admissions to Historic Garden Week’s “Leesburg Gardens Along the Potomac Home and Garden Tour.” The tickets are valued at $45 and are good for admission to six gardens, four with private homes. More information about the tour is available at vagardenweek.org. Saturday’s 45-minute demonstration is a condensation and distillation of Glick’s all-day, hands-on Propagation Workshop. In the seminar, every imaginable aspect of plant propagation is covered, including plant pollination, hybridization, seed collections and sowing to tissue culture. Subjects also include rhizome division, air layering, branch layering, root division, root cuttings, stem cuttings, use of hormones, mist propagation and more. There will be extra tables and chairs near the presentation stage and attendees will receive seed packets from Sunshine Farm as giveaways.

On Stage This year’s fest features a new presentation stage and lots of tunes BY SAMANTHA BARTRAM WITH SUNNY SKIES AND SUMMERY TEMPERATURES FORECASTED, THE TEMPTATION TO TAKE A LOAD OFF UNDER ONE OF THE COURTHOUSE LAWN’S SHADY TREES IS SURE TO BE STRONG. AND WHY RESIST? THE 27TH ANNUAL FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL’S MAIN STAGE OFFERS A COOL RESPITE WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF ACOUSTIC FAVORITES TO HELP YOU REST, RELAX AND RECHARGE. The Music Some perennial favorites are included in this year’s performance roster, including the Smallwood Brothers and Ken Wenzel, as well newcomer Tejas Singh and the classical stylings of Take Four Quintet. All lend themselves well to the setting, particularly since last year’s decision by parks and recreation organizers to favor an unplugged line up. The quieter atmosphere not only allows for greater respite among picnickers and flagging families,
it also provides a pleasant soundtrack for nearby vendors as they meet and talk with patrons. Organizers seem to have accounted for almost all musical tastes—there’s country covers from Glen Shelton, Take Four’s approach to the classics, reggae jams from FeelFree, classic rock from the Smallwoods, Wenzel’s addictive blend of country, jazz and Americana and various iterations of pop from Michelle Lockey, Sub Radio and Singh. Whether the lawn calls you earlier in the day or as the sun’s rays begin to wane, never fear—good tunes will be there. Also sprinkled in the main stage mix Saturday and Sunday are presentations for the Tree City designation and the People’s Choice Award. The Arbor Day Foundation, through its Tree City USA program, has recognized Leesburg’s “excellence in urban forestry management” for almost 30 years running—Saturday afternoon, festival visitors can join in celebrating this hallmark of the town’s FESTIVAL MUSIC continues on page 17

A New Stage For the first time in the event’s history, Flower and Garden Festival organizers are adding a second stage to the courthouse grounds. This presentation stage, facing East Market Street, will feature a talk by Barry Glick on “The Joy of Propagation.” Following his pre-festival lecture at Ida Lee Friday, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Glick will continue to impress with his extensive knowledge of all things plants. A
dynamic speaker and years-long authority on how best to cultivate a wide variety of vegetation, Glick is sure to have some great ideas about what to do with all the verdant gems available via festival vendors. Whatever calls you to the soft, green oasis of the courthouse lawn, you’ll enjoy the atmosphere created by this year’s talented performers. Grab a snack, unfurl your blanket and take a moment to revel in the warm sun and chill vibes.

How the Experts Do It A POPULAR ELEMENT OF THE ANNUAL FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL IS THE FRIENDLY COMPETITION AMONG THE AREA’S TOP LANDSCAPING COMPANIES. This year, six landscape displays are on tap. Each will provide a good source of creative ideas. You may have a vague idea in your head of what you might like at your home, but nothing beats visualizing it. The landscapers can help crystalize your plans.
Not only that, but they’re great sources of information for home gardeners; they can advise which plants go well together, their growth patterns and heights (so you don’t put a Goliath in front of a delicate specimen), and their soil, water and sun requirements. Those participating this year are Amazing Earth Landscapes, Bainbridge Outdoor Design Build, Deckscapes of Virginia LLC, Homeland Contractors LLC, Saxton Landscapes, Inc., (the defending

festival champion) and The Pond Doctor. Who will win this year’s competition? Festival visitors will decide. On Saturday, visitors will be encouraged to fill out a ballot, found in the program handed out at the entrance gates, for the People’s Choice award and turn them in at the Information Gazebo in the middle of the festival area. Voting ends at 5:30 p.m. The winner will be announced at 1:20 p.m. Sunday from the Main Stage.

A Spot Just for Kids AWAY FROM THE CROWDED MAIN STREETS, CHILDREN WILL FIND A SPECIAL PLACE JUST FOR THEM DURING THE FESTIVAL. In front of St. James’ Episcopal Church on West Cornwall Street, members of the Leesburg Parks and Recreation staff members and a platoon of volunteers will help provide two days of entertainment and activities for the festival’s youngest visitors. Kids will have the opportunity to paint large plywood animal cutouts and will likely come home with a pot of freshly planted seeds, a sparkly face painting, and maybe a little less pent-up energy after time spent dancing and playing games. A full slate of entertainers performs in 45-minute segments. Saturday Reptiles Alive! kicks things off Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Visitors can discover snake secrets and laugh at lizard stories and turtle tales. At noon, the Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers take the stage to present dance to all types of music including: traditional bluegrass, country, pop rock, Irish—even orchestral. At 1 p.m., Celtic Rhythm performs traditional
Irish step dance routines that will take festivalgoers through an enchanting Irish tale, complete with beautiful costuming and sets. At 2 p.m., Peter McCory–the one-man band— plays lively, upbeat renditions of familiar folk songs, novelty numbers, and his own awardwinning original music for kids. The Lucky Stars Puppets appear at 3 p.m. to present an interactive puppet program for young children, featuring talking animals and a journey into the world of fire breathing dragons, a king, and a brave prince. Children will be called on to join the fun. A guest performance by teen pop singer Evan Papier is planned. At 4 p.m., Benjamin Corey performs his interactive, comedy-magic show. And the Dance Academy of Loudoun Performance Team closes out Saturday’s entertainment, with a performance at 5 p.m. Sunday Bach 2 Rock kicks off Sunday’s activities, with a set beginning at 12:30 p.m. Students of all ages play the music they like most. musical production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Magician Benjamin Corey returns to the stage at 2:30 p.m. for a second set. Leesburg’s TREE COMMISSION
E
stablished in 1995, the Leesburg Tree Commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the Town Council for their interest and knowledge in urban forestry. This Commission’s vision is to provide leadership to enhance, expand and preserve the tree canopy for the benefit of the community. They are dedicated to promoting tree preservation and planting within the Town, providing a healthy and diverse tree canopy as well as ensuring an aesthetic quality of life for all citizens. The Town’s Urban Forestry Management Plan was approved in 2006 to guide Leesburg’s efforts to recover the loss of tree canopy and enhance all tree-related benefits by recommending strategies and actions to improve their urban forest management in an equitable, economic, and sustainable manner.

Reasons You Should Plant Native Trees 1. Low Maintenance: Native plants evolved to the local environment and climate conditions. So once established, native trees require little or no maintenance. 2. Beauty: Many native trees offer beautiful flowers, produce abundant colorful fruits and seeds, and brilliant seasonal foliage changes in colors.

3. Healthy Places for People: Grassy lawns and the bark-mulched landscapes require large amounts of artificial fertilizers and synthetic chemical pesticides and herbicides. Planting native trees plants for your landscaping requires less harmful additives. 4. Helping the Climate: Landscaping with natives, especially long-living trees like oaks and maples, are effective at storing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. 5. Conserving Water: Because native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, they require far less water, saving time, money, and perhaps the most valuable natural resource – water. 6. Wildlife: They provide vital habitat for birds, wildlife, and butterflies as many are dependent on very specific native plant species. Native plants provide nectar for pollinators, protective shelter for many small mammals, and the nuts, seeds and fruits produced offer essential foods for all wildlife.

And the Survey Says … Festival visitors may encounter inquisitive people carrying iPads. In this case, organizers are hoping you’ll stop and share your thoughts with these strangers. This year, the town is using a survey company to assess visitors’ reactions to the event. The answers will help Parks and Recreation Department leaders make improvements next year. After 27 years, the staff is still looking for tweaks that can make the event better. “We hope they will give us their honest opinions,” said Events Outreach Coordinator Linda Fountain.
