veryone’s ready for a break from the gloomy weather and the upcoming Town of Leesburg’s annual Flower & Garden Festival offers the perfect remedy. On April 21-22, six blocks of downtown Leesburg will be ablaze with color, as growers and vendors from around the region show off their inventories alongside an impressive array of gardening equipment, decorative art, stoneware and accessories. Town Manager Kaj Dentler is an old festival hand, having organized the event for many years as the director of the Parks and Recreation Department before becoming Leesburg’s top government executive. “The Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival is one of our marquee events—where participants, shop owners, restaurateurs, residents and visitors all come together. It really is the start of the spring for everyone,” he said. Linda Fountain and Barb Smith head up the Leesburg Parks and Recreation team that will mount the 28th edition of the popular event. Outreach Manager. Working with Parks and Rec since 2005, this will be her third year overseeing the event. Smith, the festival event coordinator, also is looking forward to her third year managing the nuts and bolts of the mechanics. They are assisted by Ashton Echols. At the top of their “good hopes” list is sunny and warm temperatures. But both women noted that even when the weather isn’t perfect, they still measure attendances close to the 30,000 visitor mark: “In the pouring rain, there are still some serious shoppers,” Fountain marveled. After more than a quarter century of success, they believe firmly in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. At its core, the festival is built around a simple idea— incorporate horticulture, entertainment for both adults and children, varied foods and a relaxed, easy atmosphere all within the historic architectural setting of downtown Leesburg. And it works. “People love this festival. It’s amazing— they just can’t seem to wrap their brains DOWNTOWN BLOOMS continues on page 4 Page 3

around it … it’s like a magic trick,” Smith said. Fountain said the sheer quality of the horticultural offerings and gardening equipment is impressive, not to mention the “instant gardens” that spring up overnight for the elaborate landscape displays. There will be six landscapers at this year’s show, featuring designs that incorporate a mix of plant material and hardscape features—all competing for top awards from judges and visitors. “It can take them up to 12 hours overnight to compose their creations,” Fountain said, marveling at that evolution. Smith encouraged visitors to pick up a ballot for the “People’s Choice Award,” either from one of the 10 ticket booths or from the gazebo in the middle of the display area, and turn it in later. “We want visitors to share what they liked the most about a particular display and show their appreciation of what went into it,” she said. The winners will be announced at 1:20 p.m. Sunday from the Main Stage on the courthouse lawn. Winners get a plaque and a coveted premier space reservation for next year’s festival. The 150-plus vendors are spread out over the six-block festival area to give the visitor a mix of everything to do with the garden— plants, equipment, hardscape and design items, art, clothing, statuary and outdoor furniture and summer living. There also will be eight nonprofit tables for Loudoun groups to share their programs with the public. One of the most popular elements of the festival in recent years has been the Beer Garden on the Town Green along West Market Street. The open space in front of the Town Hall is a pleasant spot to sit and enjoy some suds with friends, as well as a convenient meeting place. A major component of the festival is the live music performances. Part of the festival’s success lies in selecting performers that appeal to two different audiences—the young and their parents. Children can enjoy games and messing around with paint projects and games, under the watchful eye of Parks and Rec staff, as well musical performances of their own on the Children’s Stage. The Main Stage on the courthouse steps has a number of new performers this year, Smith said. When the weather is cooperating, visitors love the opportunity to plop down on the courthouse lawn and eat a picnic lunch while listening to some great music. There’s also plenty of tasty food to find at the various food trucks and stalls. The festival area also has a number of good restaurants and eateries for those who want to take a load off and sit for a while. As the festival nears, Fountain is looking forward to the positive interaction between the town and the visitors, who have discovered the many downtown shops lining the festival area and found new stores to patronize each year. “It’s a humbling experience, when people come forward and say, ‘How can we help?’” Smith said. Adds Fountain, “It’s really a team-building interaction between the town and the community—it makes you feel proud.” It’s a feeling shared through the town staff. It takes a lot of staff hours, with 32 full-time and 50 part-time Parks and Rec employees; 28 part-time Public Works shifts; and 29 Leesburg Police officers covering various aspects of the festival. the elaborate displays featured during the festival. Many festivalgoers come knowing exactly what plants they’re looking for, and knowing exactly the spot in the garden a particular shrub or plant is destined to fill. But many others come with only a vague idea of the ultimate vision for their garden. By including miniature landscaped displays—literally built over night on the Friday preceding the show’s opening— visitors can examine the small gardens before buying a particular plant, shrub or tree and observing how it would look in the garden. The main body of vendors come in early on Friday evening, and it is not until later that the landscaping crews unload their truck loads of stone, bricks, slate and ornamental features, along with the plants, bulbs, shrubs and trees that eventually will be covered with peat moss. When the festival opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the miniature gardens look as if they’ve always been there. A garden bench looks inviting to a grateful visitor as the day goes on, and water bubbles over out of an ornate fountain, while wisteria blooms droop gracefully over a wooden trellis. This year’s six landscape exhibits will serve as practical examples for gardeners, potentially saving them from some costly mistakes or, more likely, seeing something great they hadn’t thought about before. That’s as true for hardscape features, such as fountains, sheds, trellises, paths or stone walls, in the ample offering of plantings on display throughout the six-block festival area. Buyers have a wide range of plant offerings to consider, ranging from trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, dahlias, peonies, lavenders, cut flowers, herbs and vegetables to succulents, sprouts, bonsai, carnivorous and native plants. There’s a large number of garden-related items, including soaps, fragrances, lotions and oils, potpourri, root baskets, sea grass garden hats, teas and lawn care items. Garden art includes sculptures, stained glass, goblets and pottery for outside entertaining, antiques and garden ironwork. Rounding out the enormous range of offerings available are the hardscape and outdoor living features. They include tin and wooden sheds and cabins, log structures, a lot of unusual birdhouses—always a popular feature at the festival— decorative and wood-fired pottery, stonework, fountains, creative wood products, slate for garden paths, garden umbrellas and outdoor furniture. There’s something for everyone, including sprinklers, pepper grillers, decks, spas, awnings, deer-defeating structures, metalwork, hammocks, swings, unusual plant stands, outdoor torches and candles. Buyers can borrow one of the red wagons from the gazebo in the middle of the festival area, in which to haul around their purchases—as long as the wagons are available. They also can take one of the colorful festival tote bags at the same location or from vendors, again, while supplies last. mmorton@loudounnow.com

Beer Garden is a Hot Location at the Festival Loudoun’s fast-growing craft beer industry will be well represented during the garden festival. The Beer Garden on Leesburg’s Town Hall green is a favorite spot for friends to meet and greet while tasting some good brews. This is will be the second year Shannon Burnett, owner of Loudoun Brewing Company, has taken on the job of lining up the local brewing companies for the festival. Many of the breweries won’t know until the last minute what they’re going to bring, but from their own experience at Loudoun Brewing, Burnett and brewer Phil Fust expect a good variety of beers— with each brewery to bring its individual twist. “We expect some delicious brews from the participating breweries,” Burnett said. “They all BEER GARDEN continues on page 11

The Concert Within the Garden Festival The Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival isn’t only for green thumbs. It’s always a great venue to see popular musicians. This year’s lineup is no exception to that expectation. Here’s who is on tap:
Saturday Gary Smallwood returns to his traditional spot of opening the weekend’s performances Saturday morning. Offering a
mix of classic rock, country rock, soulful blues rock or what he likes to call “flat out guitardriven rural contemporary music,” Smallwood is a longtime Loudoun favorite who plays more than 200 shows a year and has shared stages Robin Trower, the Marshall Tucker Band, Johnny Winter, Bret Michaels and Mary Ann Redmond, among many more. Throwing Plates is a DCbased trio formed by James
Britton, Jamie Boyd, and Doug Imhoff known for their energetic and interactive stage presence and award-winning songwriting. FeelFree is a five-piece band delivering a reggae beat, funk-rock sound with a jazzy connotation, drawing inspiration from the dub side of Bad Brains, the horn lines of SOJA, and the soulful rhythms of Citizen Cope. Music, Fun on Cornwall St. BY MARGARET MORTON Planners for the Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival make sure that their youngest visitors are well taken care of—with their own stage and a roster of performers along with a slew of games and crafts, all conducted under the watchful eyes of Parks and Rec staffers. The Children’s Area is located on West Cornwall Street, in front of the St. James Episcopal Church. The atmosphere is relaxed, and kids can toggle back and forth at will from games and painting activities to stage performances. Crafts include making giant paper flowers, fun times decorating their own clay pot and planting seeds, using sand bug magnets, and a “self-creating” Loudoun Now/File Photo

table where kids can make their own masterpieces. Best of all, for those who like messing with paints are the popular animal and flower cardboard cut-outs. Each child is endowed with large apron and a generous amount of paint to daub on the cut-outs. Headway Church will help create pet rocks for the kids, while St. James Church volunteers will provide face-painting, always a popular activity. When they’re tired of those activities, the kids have a rousing performance schedule to enjoy. The 45-minute segments kick off on Saturday morning with crowd pleaser Reptiles Alive! Youngsters can watch snake handling up close and hear lizard stories and turtle tales. The reptiles they might be introduced to could include a boa or python, tortoise and lizards. Peter McCory—the One-Man-Band— follows with his trademark blend of well-known folk tunes and songs, novelty numbers and his own original music. The interactive performer is always a big draw with kids.

Celtic Rhythm provides a shift in tone, executing the group’s traditional Irish step dance routines with meticulous precision. Their beautiful costumes add glamor to the performance. Next comes a new performer, Crickett— Danger Clown. The DC-based artist is a jack-of-all trades, up to all kinds of tricks as an award-winning juggler, stilt
walker, balloon artist, street performer and “Danger Clown.” Performance of a different kind follows—dance precision is a hall-mark of the young dancers from the Dance Academy of Loudoun Performance Team. The Leesburg-based dance troupe FOR THE KIDS continues on page 24

features ballet, hip-hop and jazz dance dancers of the academy’s award-winning Performance Teams that routinely perform in area shows and competitions. The students of Heritage High School ‘s Theatre Club follow, performing scenes from their current spring production, “Beauty and the Beast.” The students will present a medley of songs, scenes or skits
from the show. Closing out Saturday’s offerings is popular puppeteer Bob Brown and his marionette puppets, who offers oldfashioned, down home fun on the farm and his barnyard of clever creatures. Sunday performances begin at mid-day with the new festival performers of the “More than Cheer Performance Team,”
presenting a variety of skills they have been working on over the past six weeks. They will be followed by students of the Tuscarora High School’s Drama Department, also a first-time group at the festival, who will perform songs from their upcoming show, “The Little Mermaid.” The final two performances are by long-time performers at the festival. The Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers will dance to a variety of types of music, including traditional bluegrass, country, pop rock, Irish and even orchestral. The Wildlife Ambassadors finish the day by introducing young audiences to “their backyard neighbors.” The kids will get a comprehensive lesson on how local wildlife manages to survive in a human’s world, fending off our impact on their habitats and the importance of each of the animals to our own ecosystem. Among the likely animals to be shown are the eastern screech owl, box turtle, corn snake, opossum and rabbit. mmorton@loudounnow.com Photo courtesy of Cambridge Pavers

The Tastes of the Festival Composer Lionel Bart’s well-known song “Food, Glorious Food,” that opened the smash 1960s musical “Oliver” comes to mind when you look at the temping possibilities to be offered at the Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival on April 21-22. But, judging from the food menus, it’s not likely there will be any hungry young boys like Dickens’ Oliver Twist at the festival. There will be nine food vendors at the festival along with seven retailers offering
food products or samples of them spread throughout the festival area. There’s something to please all palates—a mix of drinks, ices, appetizers, desserts and more hearty fare, including steak and cheese and gyros. On the lighter end of the menus, the popular Blue Ridge Kettle Korn will be back with its tasty treat; Daisy Lane FOOD continues on page 28

8 Nonprofits Featured During Festival One of the long-established traditions at the Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival is the promotion of nonprofit organizations. Loudoun is a generous community, with scores of associations dedicated to helping with a variety of needs. The festival provides a large audience to showcase those needs and the work of organizations trying to meet them. The Post Office parking lot on East Market Street has become the festival’s nonprofit exhibit space, where volunteers will be providing literature and talking about their programs. This year, eight nonprofits will be featured: Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad; Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers; Bike Loudoun and Friends of the W&OD Trail; Loudoun Career Firefighters Foundation; Loudoun Community Cat Coalition; Loudoun Lyme Disease Commission; Makersmiths; and the Humane Society of Loudoun County.

Sponsors Provide Support The festival is one of Parks and Rec’s major events during the year. It’s a significant budget item for the department, but the town is helped by generous contributions from local businesses and professional organizations. Some support the festival through financial donations, others through donating space such as parking lots or other trade-offs. Festival organizers offer different levels of support by which businesses can sponsor a particular booth or street section.
Financial Donors This year’s Presenting Sponsor is, once again, the Loudoun Medical Group. LMG is also the sponsor of the Main Stage entertainment at the courthouse. Sponsors Inova Primary Care, Renewal by Anderson, Loudoun Now, Mountcastle Plastic Surgery & Vein Institute, and K.C. Company
Page 30
Inc. Pellow Windows & Doors (Beer Garden) have prime street booth spaces. Loudoun County Commuter Services is the Wagon Sponsor, whereby they have their logo on the red wagons seen through the festival. Power Home Remodeling and Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. have booth space in the Lightfoot Lot. LeafFilter Gutter Protection, Evergreen Sports Complex, LLC, and Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet, all have booth space on Cornwell Street in the Children’s Area. Loudoun Credit union and Country Buick GMC of Leesburg are the T-Shirt Sponsors, with the logo printed on event staffers’ shirts.
In-Kind Donors Parks and Rec also gratefully acknowledges the support of
various other in-kind assistance: Dulles Greenway, for the Flower and Garden banner on the Greenway; Sona Bank for providing headquarters for festival staff; the post office on East Market Street for nonprofit use; Lightfoot Restaurant for its parking lot for vendor use; and St. James Episcopal Church for its grounds and face painting. Loudoun Cares is acknowledged for the use of its parking lot, as is Inform Fitness and AHT for parking spaces, and Saunders, Huddleston & White for the use of its North Street gravel lot.
