In February, Denton enjoyed seeing the sights around London on a Duck Tour.
School House boarder, Peter Liu had his art selected to be showcased in a local gallery. Peter’s painting called Hanashigure explores solitude, rain, water, humility and sakura. The sakura is a cherry blossom native to Japan. The person is the distance is an old man with shoulders slumped, in the rain, who was here to absorb the atmosphere of the fields. If you could put the atmosphere of a painting into a person it would probably look something like him.
Chengran (Jonathan) Yang proved himself to be one of the top young Maths students in the country when he came 15th in round 2 of the British Mathematical Olympiad. His journey began when he, along with 100,000 other students, took part in the Senior Maths Challenge with approximately 1600 qualifying for round 1 of the British Mathematical Olympiad. Not only did Jonathan qualify for round 1 but he was one of only 230 students around the country who then qualified for round 2. Once again, he excelled himself, by demonstrating he is a genuine talent in the field of mathematics. Jonathan has also been offered a place to study at St. John’s College at Cambridge for next year.

Congratulations to Ewan Chan (left) and Ian Kong (right), who were part of a team representing Loughborough Grammar School at the Bath and Otter Cup swimming event. The swimmers of Loughborough Grammar School swam in competitions in London on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th March. We recorded results in each of the three competitions that eclipse anything that we as school have achieved in 20 years of entering.
In the Otter Challenge Match at St. Paul’s School on the Thursday night, we finished a very strong third out of 11 teams, with George Cooper breaking the school record of former British record holder Tsubasa Nakagawa in the 100m freestyle. The next day saw the competition move to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where over 70 independent schools from around the country competed in two relay events. In the freestyle relay, we came in a creditable 16th place out of 76 and were just 2 seconds off making the final. The afternoon saw the medley relay and our boys put in an amazing swim to record the 10th fastest time, thus qualifying for the final. The final saw the boys better their previous offer by a whole second to finish a fantastic 9th place in the country.
Two of our senior boarders, Ewan Chan and Sam Chan assisting local primary school children in one of our Maths Masterclasses which are held on Saturday mornings. We are always delighted to see so many of our Year 12 and 13 boarders helping in the classes run in Maths, Science and Modern Languages.
The Student Council has petitioned with regard to giving our senior boys an element of uniform choice, reflecting their greater maturity. Therefore, from the new academic year, boys will be given a choice of suits and shirts to wear with their school tie. What is important is that our senior boys look smart and professional at all times. New Sixth Form uniform rules: ·
A plain, dark business suit (black, navy blue, dark grey) of traditional, sober design (no pinstripes/other patterns or “spray on” fit).
·
A plain, pastel shirt of light colour with an appropriate collar and long sleeves. Sober pinstriped shirts are also acceptable.
·
A school tie.
·
Black, leather laced shoes (No velcro or trainers).
·
Plain matching socks (no white or fluorescent socks)
Optional items: ·
A V-neck jumper in either grey, navy blue or black with no visible logo.
·
A dark, sober, appropriate coat.
·
A suitable, sober scarf (no sports scarves).
·
A matching suit waistcoat.
The Senior Leadership Team retain the right to judge any items falling outside the bounds of these categories as inappropriate and breaking regulations. If a boy is in any doubt about the suitability of clothing, he should consult the Head of Sixth Form or one of his Deputies. The School Shop will continue to sell the existing charcoal suit, which is included in these rules. This is a stylish and hardwearing item that will continue to serve boys well. We anticipate that the vast majority of current Year 12 boys will continue to wear their existing suit when they enter Year 13, although perhaps with greater variety of shirt choice. We will also be extending the range of school ties that Sixth Form boys may earn, in order to recognise the full range of contributions that they make to the life of the school.
Year 13
End of Term Arrangements
All Year 13 Boarders are permitted to leave the school once their final examination is complete.
At the end of each term, all Boarders are expected to remain until the term officially ends.
Please liaise with the Housemaster and Mrs. Briers with these arrangements.
If your son needs to leave earlier than permitted, requests should be made in writing to the Headmaster.
Five School House boarders have played a key role in Loughborough Grammar’s sports teams this term. Ian is an excellent swimmer and was part of the school team that came second in the prestigious Warwick 100s swimming gala. Alex is an important member of the basketball team and he plays regular games against local schools. Joey, Thierry and Eric all play for the school football team and have travelled to various other schools this term in our regular Saturday fixtures. L-R: Ian Kong, Joey Yin, Alex Hon, Thierry Fan and Eric Li. Several School House boarders have been very successful in national academic competitions this term. The boys enter these competitions in addition to their regular Sixth Form studies. Taking part, and doing well, in these competitions is fun and helps our students stand-out when they apply to the top universities. The outstanding performance came from Jonathan who was placed 15th in the whole of the United Kingdom in the British Maths Olympiad, an outstanding achievement! After completing his studies at Loughborough he will study Maths at Cambridge University next year. Zion and Jake won Gold Awards in the Biology and Physics Olympiad, Gevin and Julian won silver in Physics and Biology and Henry won a Bronze Award in Physics. L-R: Zion Chan, Jonathan Yang, Jake He, Gevin Zhu, Henry Qu and Julian Wat Student Profile
Name: John Chan (School House Captain) Subjects studied: Maths, Economics, Geography Plans for university: Warwick University to study Business Management
What have you liked about studying in Loughborough?: The boarders and teachers are very friendly and the school environment is beautiful. I love seeing the blue sky and sun come out over the school, it is very relaxing and the buildings are lovely. I have got involved in a range of activities outside my A-level studies. For example, I am a member of the school debating team, I help local school children with their problems in Maths, I take a finance course as well as my A-level subjects and I have been on many trips with the boarders to various cities in England. I have also liked the responsibility of being House Captain and this has increased my confidence for when I go to university in the UK next year.
