The Arts Academy at

Benjamin Rush & Glen Foerd on the Delaware Since October, 2014, students from my Media Arts class visited the Glen Foerd mansion equipped with cameras of all kinds, including mobile devices, DSLRs, and even some old-fashioned film cameras. Surrounded by the past and standing in the present, these young artists found fresh ways to see their environment. With each visit, they became more aware of objects and spaces previously overlooked. Some photographers were drawn primarily to the outdoors, finding hidden places where they could imagine a past, now overgrown. Others found quiet corners of rooms and simple spaces where light seemed to hang in the air like ghosts. Technically, photographs record information. In the art of photography, though the subject may be similar, the resulting photograph is as unique as the individual who took it. Edward Weston said, “Photography suits the temper of this age - of active bodies and minds. It is a perfect medium for one whose mind is teeming with ideas. By using the past as their subject, these students are giving their ideas form, and in a way, showing us a vision of the future. -Louis Mazza, Media Arts Teacher

“When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes, but when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls -Ted Grant

To me this quote means that when photographing in black and white the photo captures a deeper meaning and shows more of the detail than in color. So when you take the same photograph twice, but one in color and the other in black and white each of the two photos that has been taken can represent some different views on it. - Selena Pham

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.

-Dorothea Lange

The Glen Foerd Project has defined this quote for me, and taught me to fully conceptualize the idea of photography. There is so much history in this mansion, and my photographs have just become a part of it. I snapped different instances, which can never be recreated or experienced again...unless viewing my photos. It places you in my viewpoint. -Emily Hurwitz

Not only are light and shadow significant to our everyday being, they are such beautiful aspects of existence. Different levels of light and shadow make things exist, but they also define, enhance, and glorify such simple things. Manipulating light and shadow can turn any individual being into a living work of art. Using certain light can highlight their more prominent features, and shadows can darken and enhance their hidden ones. Not many people take pride in wrinkles, or other lines in their skin, but I’m a witness to someone who’s cried over a picture that someone took of them, because they felt pleased with the amount of detail and definition that could be shown on their face; they were able to see things within their face that they themselves never had before. Utilizing light and shadow can make one person love another thing or being so much more than they already might. -Emily Pressman

Light & Shadow “Shadow is the obstruction of light. Shadows appear to me to be of supreme importance in perspective, because, without them opaque and solid bodies will be ill defined; that which is contained within their outlines and their boundaries themselves will be ill-understood unless they are shown against a background of a different tone from themselves. -Leonardo da Vinci

The light and shadows at the mansion are incredible. They allow an artist to experiment with such extreme mediums and perspectives and that is not something that you get to do often. -Alexa Delaney

“When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice. -Robert Frank

Every room at the Glen Foerd estate has a focal point of a window. Windows are said to be the symbols of essential life and light. The lights and darks contrast themselves to create a new, surreal feeling bringing forth the rich history and beauty the house and land has to offer Philadephia.

Being in such an old place, there is an unlimited amount of potential lurking within every aspect of the mansion. Instead of limiting myself to just the interior corners of the home, I decided to explore the outer regions.

Though the mansion itself is a beautiful form of architexture, I find that nature often goes unnoticed. I wanted to capture the real beauty that we encounter on a daily basis. -Marissa Donapel

Photography doesn’t have boundries. There isn’t a word limit on a photo. -Liz Merrigan

I never really know what to say. Words usually come out in jumbles or badly structured sentences. One thing I do know how to do though, is express things through art. My photography is voicing words that my brain can’t exactly put together.

During the adventures at Glen Foerd, my words were everywhere and had no exact meaning. They changed constantly but in the end, created a nice flow. It’s definitely different from what I started with, but turned out being even better. -Jeanette Gonzalez

“With photography a new language has been created. Now for the first time it is possible to express reality by reality. We can look at an impression as long as we wish, we can delve into it and, so to speak, renew past experiences at will. -Ernst Haas
