Although there are now 111 elements in the Periodic Table, that wasn’t always so. When Siberian superchemist Dimitri Mendeleev came up with the table in 1869, he left gaps where he predicted new elements would appear. From then until now scientists have been filling them in as new discoveries are made. Some of the elements are found naturally, while others have been created in labs. To find some of these elements, scientists had to look in the most unexpected places.

W h at M ak es W h at ? o r WHERE ARE THEY HIDING?

Can you use your scientific intuition to figure out which elements are hiding inside the objects we use all the time? Write the name of the element on the line provided next to the common product you think it’s found in.

5 Boron-B I’m especially good at getting other ingredients to work together to get a job done.

6 Carbon-C I’m the master of disguise, transforming myself into a wide variety of shapes, and I form the bulk of all living matter.

9 Flourine-F I’m tough and I strengthen lots of things, including teeth.

15 Phosphorus-P I’m an acid that’s both helpful and hurtful, depending on how you use me.

16 Sulfur-S Once I was known as “brimstone” and I’m often associated with fire.

19 Potassium-K Outside the body I cause explosions; inside I keep everything running smooth.

20 Calcium-Ca I’m a big builder-I stick together well and I’m good at neutralizing acid.

28 Nickel-Ni I’m great at forming alloys with other elements that make materials stronger and resistant to corrosion.

38 Strontium-Sr Although I’m boring in my natural state I’m colorful when heated and I have all kinds of uses.

47 Silver-Ag My shine and flexibility gives me all kinds of applications, and I am very sensitive to light.

51 Antimony-Sb Although I can make a deadly poison, as a strengthener I can’t be beat.

74 Tungsten-W I have the highest melting point of all the elements; no one can hold a candle to me when it comes to toughness.

83 Bismuth-Bi Although I am heavy, I melt pretty easily which is useful in certain applications where you need a quick reaction.
