NIC FIDDIAN GREEN B. 1963 Born in Hampshire in 1963, British artist Nic Fiddian Green is a renowned sculptor and draughtsman who specialises in sculptures of equestrian forms. In the early 80s he studied at Chelsea College of Art and Wimbledon College of Art before focusing on sculpture and learned bronze casting at St Martin’s becoming a life long interest. Around this time Fiddian Green had his first encounter with the iconic 5th century B.C Selene Horse of the Parthenon, found today at the British Museum in London. The Selene Horse has remained the key subject of his practice; a benchmark in his passionate pursuit of balance, harmony and proportion. At the request of Westminster City council, Fiddian Green’s archetypal 33 ft (12m) bronze sculpture Still Water, 2011 now stands permanently at Marble Arch. Towering over the north easterly corner of Hyde Park, it has become a cherished London monument, testament to Fiddian Green’s ability to evoke a sense of calm even in the most frenetic of surroundings. The artist’s latest project offers an altogether more intimate examination of his equine subject. Carving semi-precious stones for the first time, he has fashioned unique pendants from single blocks of lapis lazuli, jade, amber, opal and soapstone. Working in wax he has created cuffs and pendants cast in both gold and silver. Though small scale, these works are imbued with the same sense of nobility and life as his large-scale work, capturing that ineffable moment of pause before movement. This latest body of work represents an important new step in the artist’s journey of the carving process. Each work has been expertly and exquisitely sculpted to function successfully both as jewellery and small sculpture independent of function. When the work is not suspended from the neck, it rests on a dedicated stand.
