Furniture Layout Plan

Original Electrical Lighting Plan

Proposed Electrical Lighting Plan

Proposal Based on the original electrical lighting plan, the light fixtures used in the room were ceiling lights (flat round). However, for the proposed electrical lighting plan, the decision to maintain the type of light fixture (ceiling lighting), was made. But, the wiring of the ceiling lights can be adjusted to achieve the optimum energy efficiency. The four (4) ceiling lights on the floor plan should be grouped into groups of two. Due to the way the window in this room is positioned, the ceiling lights are grouped as shown in the image below- Group A is closer from the study table , which group B is futher away from the study table.

A

B

Proposed electrical lighting plan with labelled groupings.

How this aids in conserving energy is that in the morning, the window serves as a natural light source. When night time only group A lighting requires to open for study purpose. During day time only group B requires to be open for more lighting because is it futher away from the window.

Type of Bulb To Be Used LED light bulbs. This is because as the chosen room is a very frequently used room to do work, the bulbs in that room will be used very often, on a daily basis. Although, the upfront cost of an LED bulb is higher than the price of a CFL bulb, in a long run, the LED bulb costs less. It is almost double the price for using CFL bulb.

Watts used Cost per bulb Average lifespan No. of bulbs needed for 25, 000 hours Cost of bulbs needed for 25,000 hours

CFL Bulb 14W RM 8.40 8,000 hours 3 RM 26.25

LED Bulb 7W RM 13.26 25,000 hours 1 RM 13.26

PART 2B: PASSIVE/ GREEN INSULATION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Introduction Based on my findings and observation in part 2A, Wall 1 has the highest heat transfer rate. Hence, to reduce the heat transfer rate, I have designed a prototype of scrolling white tinted screen. It has two functions which are reduce the heat transfer and also become a movie screen night.

Initial Sketches of Design Deciding on the Type of Material The materials I decided to go with are semi transparent blackout cloth, and polystyrene roller . Polystyrene roller was used to be the main roller of the blackout cloth for this prototype. The reason why I choose polystyrene roller as the main material for this project is due to polystyrene is a very poor heat conductor and also it can reduce the heat transfer. In addition of that, polystyrene also a natural insulator. Beside that, the reason why I choose blackout cloth is because it can prevent the solar energy transfer directly from the window and also create a white screen for movie during night time. This prototype create a privacy space and also cool environment . This prototype is not a permanent fixture , which easy to install and remove .

FINAL PROJECT: BUILDING SERVICES DESIGN IN KITCHEN

Introduction to Site

1.1 site study of Original Kitchen Layout

Original kitchen layout plan

Original picture of Dry Kitchen

Original picture of Wet Kitchen Upon studying the overall layout of the kitchen (plumbing, electrical wirings and lightings, furniture layout and fire safety considerations). Changes can be made to better improve the condition and functionality of the kitchen.

1.2 An Interview with the Family Chef Before begin with the process of redesigning the kitchen, an interview session carried out between my mom which uses the kitchen for the most of the time in this household for a better insight of what would be a good and functional kitchen design.

Below is the conversation between my mom and I. - “How your dream kitchen would be?” “I’m hoping to have a smart technology kitchen which can helps me on cooking and also cleaning.”

- “What do you think is important to have in your kitchen?” “I’d want my kitchen to have enough work space and also a dish washer. Considering family members are too lazy to wash dish.”

- “What kitchen appliances do you usually use?” “I’m not a cooking person, the appliances I used the most is microwave and also air fryer.”

- “What do you think could be improved in this kitchen?” “The sink. I need a dish washer which big enough to fits all the dishes and I could empty the sinks for pans and pots cleaning.”

Redesigning the Kitchen

2.1 Redesigned furniture Layout

Redesigned kitchen layout plan

Kitchen cabinetry, Worktops and Bar Table In the redesigned layout, kitchen cabinetry, worktops and also bar table are using inappropriate materials as finishes. After redesigning the kitchen, I decided to use acrylic finish for all the cabinets and also storage. The acrylic finish is not only cost effective, but it can also withstand stain. With regular wiping, it can easily to be cleaned.

Examples of kitchen cabinets with acrylic finish

Wooden worktops in the wet kitchen is old and also not preserving in a good way. Marble worktops are more recommended for wet kitchen because marble are very durable. Compared to most materials, marble stone can resists heat and also water easily which can last longer and also easily for cleaning. With a normal wipe, marble worktops can be clean.

2.2 Redesigned Electrical Layout

Redesigned electrical plan

Electrical Outlets When studying the original kitchen electrical outlets, I noticed that lack of electrical outlets in the kitchen. This situation leads to one problem which is usage of extension sockets. However, the over usage of these extension sockets might potentially cause a trip in the circuit breaker.

For preventing accidents happens, a few of electrical outlets are added along the kitchen worktops in as shown in the redesigned electrical plan. They are prepared for all the electrical kitchen appliances. This prevent over usage of extension sockets in the kitchen.

Justification of Redesigned Building Services and Location

3.1 Wiring and Lighting

9 recessed lights are the main lights used to light up the kitchen. In addition to that, there is also one recessed light added to the toilet for convience purpose.

Recessed lights in the wet kitchen are seperated switch from the dry kitchen. This way, the window in wet kitchen can serve as a natural light source. Hence, it would not require any additional lighting. However, on the other end of the kitchen which is the dining area. The recessed light for dry kitchen and dining area are seperated for concerving energy purpose, during dining time the recessed light in dry kitchen can be closed and only the recessed light in the dining area require to open. Type of Bulb to be Used Recessed light: LED light bulbs

LED light bulb is an electric light for use in light fixtures that produces light using one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED lamps have a lifespan many times longer than equivalent incandescent lamps, and are significantly more efficient than most fluorescent lamps

3.2 Electrical Kitchen Appliances Microwave

Based on the specifications table above, this microwave capacity goes up to 23L which can fits more dishes at one time. This allows users to consumed energy by only microwave food one time.

Dish Washer This dish washer has double walled construction to keep the heat inside and safe to touch. This suitable for our house because there are childrens playing around the compound.

Cooker hood

Based on the specifications as shown, the energy efficiency class is A which means that during cooking, lesser energy will consume and reduce the electrical cost.

Refrigerator

Based on the specifications table above, it shows that this refrigerator is energy saving. Not only that, it also provides automatic deforst function which can helps my mom to cook faster and also easier.

3.3 VAC Air Conditioner

This air conditioner had the most suitable horsepower for the dining area and also kitchen which is 1.5HP. Due to the space in the kitchen and dining area, 1.5HP is enough to handle the workload. This air conditioner also is a five star rating air conditioner which means it is energy efficient.

3.2 Water Supply and Plumbing

Based on the plumbing plan above, water line coming from the back of the house into the kitchen and supply water to both sinks in dry and wet kitchen. Two seperated water line is to prevent the polution of water happens.

Basin

Tap A mixer tap with handspray is good for kitchen used. It is convenient for washing basin and also the water pressure is controllable.

3.5 Fire Safety Most of the cabinetry and worktops picked out in the redesigned kitchen are made out of marble stone which can prevent the chance of happening fire accident. All the electrical outlets also place with a certain amount of distance to the water tap to prevent short circuit.
