Morph Hair takes the norm out of everyday hairdressing. Under the direction of award-winning stylist Dave Rogers, the Hamilton salon is at the forefront of innovation and creativity. Dave recently returned from New Zealand Fashion Week, an event that showcases the very best of the country’s designers and their collections, and is considered the pinnacle of New Zealand fashion. He came back totally inspired. Renowned for being a leader rather than a follower, Morph Hair is heading in a new direction. With the arrival of the spring/summer season, the salon is creating new fashion directions and adopting a new focus. Time, energy and resources are primarily being invested into cat walk and photographic work. “We will be honing our skills and concentrating our efforts in this area,” says Dave, who has a strong vision for the business. “The salon will have a greater fashion orientation and be doing a lot of photographic work.” Morph’s summer collection has been greatly inspired by NZ Fashion Week. Dave and his team had great fun during the event where they presented two collections back to back, an achievement requiring five straight hours of concentration and effort. Following on from NZ Fashion Week, Dave has enjoyed working with an amazing team of people to create the salon’s looks for summer 2011/2012. “It’s been such a fun and rewarding process.” The Morph team were excited to all be involved in a recent fashion shoot and especially welcomed the chance to work with New Zealand 2011 Hairdresser of the Year, Sara Alsop and Jock Robson, the 2011 Wella Trend Vision winner. Both shared their vast knowledge in creating award-winning images. “Photographic 12 • fashion directions

work is a great opportunity to expand our knowledge base and grow the business,” says Dave. Morph Hair was established eight years ago with the express goal of uniting a top team of exceptional stylists to bring high-end hairdressing to the Hamilton market. The vision is to create a fun and creative atmosphere while providing quality service in a top-end studio. To add polish and complete the talented team, the salon recently took on a new stylist. Morph’s energetic, inspirational team are delighted to share their creativity and fabulous new imagery with all their valued clients. NEW LOOKS FOR SUMMER This summer heralds more colour in fashion, clothes and make-up to create a fresh and feminine feel. For hair, the emphasis is on lots of light, airy texture that creates loads of volume. The new look is influenced from current catwalk trends. Models stalked the runway with teased-out tresses and incredible pompadours, paying homage to one hair trend that never goes out of style: volume. This trend has a more timeless feel with imagery that will still look good in years to come. “Texture is all about big hair,” says Morph Hair director/stylist Dave Rogers. “And volume is being created both in product and styling. Moussing is also hot at the moment.” Texture helps create volume and movement. This can be achieved through styling, brush blow waving and back combing. Heated styler techniques and GHD irons will help create the styles. Preparation is all important. A lot of pastel tones will be showing this season. “Summer is all about lightening and blonde variations on lighter
colour,” says Dave. “These colours are non committal and fade out.” Pastel tones in lightened (blonde) hair that show seamless tonal variations with more depth in close to the scalp are being featured. This is a great alternative for someone blonde who wants a change but doesn’t want to commit to going darker as the colour will wash out over three to six weeks. Balayage techniques are also being used. Balayage is a hair colouring technique designed to create very natural-looking highlights and colours without the use of foils. The primary resulting difference with Balayage is the very natural looking results and the little-to-no-regrowth line that appears as the Balayage colouring grows out. As for guys, reasonably structured texture will feature in men’s cuts. Trends include a combination of lengths, shorter and longer, a lot of unblended haircuts and a definite styled look.
MORPH HAIR’s WINNING TEAM Morph Hair director/stylist Dave Rogers believes the Waikato doesn’t see enough of its hairdressing talent. “The region is home to a lot of skill and creativity, much of which goes unrecognised by the public.” At the recent Regional Fashion Hair Design Awards, Morph Hair stylists achieved outstanding success. Dave won two events, both of which were hotly contested by his team. In an astounding achievement, the salon placed first, second, third and fourth for Urban Colour. The salon has always excelled at colour and this reaffirms the fact. “It demonstrates that we have consistency across the team,” says Dave.
MORPHUEL
Morph’s strength in colour has become a real passion with the team. As a result, the salon is sought out for its expertise in colour and fashion. Judging criteria for the competitions is very exacting and many techniques have to be employed to achieve seamless colour. Ideally, there should be no start or stop; colours should be well blended. Morph stylist Denise Taylor was runner-up in both the Urban Colour and the open section, Urban Cut, while Josh Heath won Directional Apprentice Haircut. Josh also placed fourth in the Urban Colour open event, an impressive result for an apprentice. Atmosphere, passion and consistency across the board sets the award-winning salon apart. One of the bigger salons around town, Morph’s 10-strong team have a vast amount of experience. Many are long serving. The salon provides a platform for hair stylists to cement their careers. It’s also a fun place to work and be creative in. “Morph Hair is all about allowing creative people to be creative,” says Dave. Resources are invested into the team; they receive regular coaching sessions and the salon provides a tailored education apprenticeship programme. Benchmarking themselves against their peers, Morph stylists are consistent achievers in annual competitions.

We love this look. It's a little bit posh and channels the inner lady in us all. Try working it from tip to toe, and don't forget accessories: a floral hairclip tucked under a bun, a pretty purse, a string of pearls and a smack of pink lippy. Finish with a heavenly pair of ladylike heels.

Inspiration behind the cover shot was drawn from two creative pools, one being shows worked on at this year’s fashion week in which partial braiding on long wavy hair featured heavily, and the other soft beautiful pastel tones we've been playing with and looks coming through from Europe this season.
suited for your hair needs. Oils are the latest in easy nutrition with L’Oreal’s Mythic Oil proving its weight in gold, hydrating the hair with avocado and grape seed oils that won’t weight your hair down or leave an oily residue, Liquid gold – this product is certainly one of my favourites.
Hot for short hair this season is the rockabilly influenced rock crop, evolving from the pixie cut the rock crop, takes androgynous Edge, the cut is heavier and chunkier, choppy not wispy texture. Undercutting and disconnection also feature, giving these looks a modern feel.
Remember your hair is just like your skin – it gets damaged from the elements, dries out and needs protection, so cover it and moisturise as much as you can.
Hot for medium and longer length hair this season is the mod bob, voluminous and slightly messy. Back combed through the top with a low parting, these bob shapes have a choppy textured base line. And there’s the lob or long bob, a longer shoulder length blunt cut that sharpens long hair instantly. For long hair, it's all about shine and condition this season, with waves not curls being a key look also. There's a 60s inspired undertone to this season's hair, finished with a refined modern edge. Sophistication and glamour are in vogue again. Tips for keeping hair in tiptop condition this summer: Always start with a professionally prescribed shampoo, conditioner and treatment range that's
Upme – four classically designed hair-ups. We have a beautiful menu from which you can choose your perfect style. BloMe – Wash and full blow out. For long, short full blow out. Great for a quick pick me up in your lunch break or an after work makeover.
StraightMe – hair needs to be clean and dry and we will transform your locks into sleek, straight tresses.
Latest must try treatment this season has got to be Kerastase FusioDose. Instant fibre transformation ritual, a tailor made and freshly fused treatment to instantly transform your hair, exclusively by Kerastase. Available at Ktizo Hair & Spa.
Trends from fashion week this year that we really loved were the beautiful plaits and braids that sent long wavy locks down the runway to create a romantic feeling. Hair is shiny and polished with condition being a key priority, water waves featured heavily and hair ups have a strong structure and shape - glossy and glamorous.
We know you will love the short time frame and small fee for beautifully finished hair.

Indulge yourself at Vintage Hair Boutique. They’re romantics at Vintage Hair Boutique, romantics who believe their clients deserve to be thoroughly pampered. It’s all chandeliers, beautiful floral English wallpapers and flowers, overlaid with a warm and friendly, but very professional, approach. And that theme reflects the weddings that are the business’ speciality. “The romantic shabby chic theme is very popular for weddings now,” Maria says. “It suits the location and the image I had for the salon. “I’d worked in the hairdressing industry for long time a long time and I knew exactly what I wanted for my own place. And I waited some time for a salon to come available in this location.” That’s nestled within the heart of the Queenwood shopping centre with its village atmosphere and small chic shops and eateries. Vintage Hair Boutique offers hair, makeup, spray tanning, eyelash extensions and lash and brow tinting. Perfect for dream weddings, balls, special birthdays, a special night or just when you want to feel gorgeous. And that’s everything from the soft draped hair threaded with “jewels” of the art nouveau period to Audrey Hepburn sophistication, Marilyn Monroe sass and even hot 70s panache. “But the look’s always tweaked to suit the

individual client.” Staff will travel to wedding locations within the Waikato, or brides can choose to bring the wedding party and the photographer to the salon. “We’re all really passionate about the weddings and the balls. We love the creativity involved in doing something different.” But it’s not all glamour; the salon handles all the regular and high-fashion cuts and colours, and caters for men and kids too. Stylists are all fully qualified hairdressers who upskill regularly with training in Auckland. It keeps them on top of latest trends, cutting techniques, styles and colour selections. “Only the most exquisite products are used at Vintage Hair Boutique: L’Oreal, Inoa – an ammonia-free range that’s ideal for sensitive skins – and Pureology, which is 100 per cent vegan and infused with essential oils. It’s very gentle, so gentle even plastic surgeons and dermatologists like it,” Maria says. Come in and enjoy a thorough pampering that includes a relaxing scalp massage, good coffee and home-made fudge, wine and strawberries – those little touches that set the salon apart. It’s open Tuesdays 10am-6pm, Wednesdays 9am-9pm, Thursdays and Fridays 9am-5pm and Saturdays 9am-3pm.

Good food, new bar...a great place to go
A recipe for success
Based on the very successful gastro pub model from the United Kingdom, the Homestead Bar and Eatery at the Hillcrest roundabout still holds on to an identity of a local pub, with its superior dining offering sitting comfortably in the mix. The combination of great food with quality beverages and warm friendly service is the best recipe for a great social outing, says owner Jaimee Poole, who has extensive
experience in the hospitality industry both here and overseas. The Homestead’s menu offers traditional-style meals with a contemporary feel, and includes a range of healthy salads and light meals. All meals are reasonably priced. The bar offers Monteiths range of beers and mainstream tap beer, coupled with Monteiths craft beers and international beers to complement the menu. The wine list features New Zealand wines. Like the menu, the wines are reasonably priced and most choices are available by the glass or
bottle. The Homestead was refurbished this year with the help of local tradesmen. New tables by Black Dog Furniture enhance the warm and inviting environment. With a great view of the hustle and bustle of the rat race, the Homestead Bar and Eatery is the ideal place to relax with friends and watch the world go by.

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is urging the region’s businesses clubs or individuals to get behind it this month. Friday August 26, 2011 is the 21st anniversary of Daffodil Day –

the Cancer Society’s flagship event – and with some of the highest cancer rates in New Zealand, it may also be the Waikato’s most important fundraising and awareness campaign. Last year approximately 340 of the region’s businesses got behind Daffodil Day by purchasing fresh daffodils, merchandise or making a donation. This year the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society hopes to at least double that number. “Nationally, one in three New Zealanders are affected by cancer. Wouldn’t it be great if at least one in three businesses got behind Daffodil Day?” says spokeswoman Alisha Kennedy. She explains the Cancer Society receives no direct government funding. “We rely on the amazing support and generosity we get from our communities to operate. We have some businesses, schools, volunteers and individuals who go to great lengths to support us.” A key push for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty division this Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s new Lions Lodge. The purpose-built lodge provides free accommodation, meals and support for people who have to travel more than 30 kilometres for cancer treatment at Waikato Hospital. The lodge also hosts a range of support services and groups for people around the region. “These support services are available to anyone living with cancer and they are all offered either free or for a small fee.” Despite opening in February, the extensive fundraising needed for the lodge is continuing. “The need for the new facility was anticipated, so we were able to cover the purchase of the site and some building costs, but we still need to raise another $2 million.” Businesses have until Wednesday August 17 to order fresh flowers, pens or donation boxes for Daffodil Day. On Daffodil Day people will be able to make donations at street collection sites, an instant $20 donation by phoning 0900 311 11, or a $3 donation by texting ‘daffodil’ to 883. For more information visit www.daffodilday.org.nz.

The Naturally Healthy chain of stores has just opened a herbal dispensary and extended its range of liquid herbal and therapeutic products to better serve its customers. Running the dispensary is herbalist and Hamiltonian Keryn Satherley, who is on hand to give one-on-one consultations and put together her own herbal remedies. “We have an incredibly knowledgeable team,” says Naturally Healthy co-owner Monica van de Weerd. “Having the specialist knowledge which Keryn brings and more products means we are better able now to look after Hamilton.” Keryn still enjoys the personal contact of working on the floor as part of the retail team, joined by the ever-popular Sash Prasad and Hetal Thanki. “People absolutely love our retail team members, who take the time to get to know each customer personally,” says Monica. “We see our customers as friends.” Naturally Healthy has a family approach
to business, with the three stores working closely together as an extended family. Monica’s husband and business co-owner, Frans, is a natural therapist with more than 30 years’ experience and their daughter Shawn, trained in naturopathy, runs the Hamilton East branch. Monica says there is an increase in people looking to natural remedies for solutions and better overall wellbeing. “We don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach or do natural for natural’s sake. We only recommend what people need: the right remedy for the right results.” A trusted name in Hamilton, Naturally Healthy opened a store in Hamilton East 18 years ago, followed by a branch in Ward Street seven years later and one in Westfield Chartwell the year after. Their wide variety of natural products and competitive prices keeps customers coming back, says Monica. Clients can choose from vitamin and mineral supplements, natural hair and skincare, green super foods, herbal tea, bee products, natural cleaning and gardening products,
cosmetics, essential oils, sun care and more. “We stock all major New Zealand brands, so you can be assured of our unbiased advice.” The team is happy to answer questions on the shop floor, by email or over the phone, or to arrange paid in-depth private consultations. Customers can also shop with confidence in Naturally Healthy’s secure online store, knowing they have the backing of an established brand and skilled staff. Monica is passionate about her job and it shows. “Helping people to make natural choices so they can get results and then seeing those changes happening, is the coolest thing you can ever imagine. It’s a real honour. If you’re not getting results, we are the place you should be coming to.” Naturally Healthy shops are located at 5 Ward Street, upstairs at Westfield Chartwell and at 419 Grey Street, Hamilton East. Call 07 958-3842 or email Monica at monica@naturallyhealthy.co.nz.

n 13th September 1963 Cyril turned 21 years old. The very next day Cyril and Jenny married at Church of Christ in Matamata. Jenny was 19 years old at the time. While Jenny was brought up by foster parents in Te Poi, and given away by her foster dad, Mick Barrett, she always knew her birth parents and family so her sisters were included in the wedding party. The reception was held in the Matamata Memorial Hall and the catering was prepared by the Dye family. That night Cyril was booked with his band to perform in the Army Hall in Tokoroa, so early in married life neither Cyril not Jenny figured Tokoroa would end up being their home town. Cyril and Jenny spent their first months of married life at Crystal Hot Springs, Cyril as general labourer and caretaker, and Jenny being motel cleaner, shop assistant and office person. For three years Jenny and Cyril got to watch live shows on the sound shell at the Crystal Springs. Some of the entertainers were ‘The Chicks’, Ray Columbus, Ray Wolfe, Lou and Simon. It was the most amazing three years of their lives, being involved with tourists, campers and swimmers. President Kennedy had been assassinated a month after Cyril and Jenny married. A few months after that there was a plane crash in the Kaimais. They travelled a lot at the weekends, to play Marae netball and rugby which is where they first met. In 1966 Cyril travelled to Tokoroa for his first stint as a bushman and hitchhiked to and from Okauia, Matamata, to work. Then he managed to get a Forest Products home, and Jenny moved to Tokoroa part

way through 1967 to join him. He spent his time as a trimmer, breaker out, then on to the skids, then on a RB30. Between 1967 and mid 1990s Cyril was involved with Tokoroa Rugby Football Club. He enjoyed helping Ivan Millard with Housie nights and had so much fun meeting the people, the only downside being the cloud of smoke. He also coached junior rugby and played for the senior reserves for many years as prop, eventually being bar manager for the Tokoroa Rugby Club, then for the Tokoroa Cricket Club, and lastly for the Tokoroa Golf Club. Hard work and long hours. Jenny involved herself with netball and umpiring carying on from where she left off in Matamata. Coaching intermediate netballers for several years then Kiwitoa Netball Club was formed and Jenny became fully immersed in this club. 1972 saw the birth and gift of their son Christopher completing their lives. Cyril had a job at Kinleith Mill working in the plywood for about a year, then he became a stacker driver for many years in the Mill so 1976 Cyril became a bus driver for the workers in the mill. All of eight years Jenny became a Postie when it was privately contracted by the Foyles and in the meantime both continued their love of sport. Between 1977 and 1984 Jenny and Cyril’s lives changed dramatically with most of their focus on son Christopher’s involvement with rugby, softball and eventually archery. For them it was magical to be involved with their son’s school and sports activities.
While they both were still involved with rugby and netball it did not curb their interest in their son. In 2000 there were many Rugby Football Club commitments and in between these years Jenny and Cyril got involved with Tritons Tokoroa Golden Oldies Tours to Canada, Tournament in Toronto, to the Rockies, New York, Hawaii and had a ball. 2008 – the saddest June – it is Jenny’s birthday and Christopher’s birthdays this month, but sadly Christopher, at the tender age of 36, died tragically in Surfers Paradise. Both Cyril and Jenny were devastated. Cyril had just had his wallet and phone stolen from his bus, and when the policeman arrived they thought it was the return of his belongings, but is was the shocking news of their son’s accident. So, so sad and no way of communicating with family and friends to seek support or comfort. The Tokoroa community rallied around them both by visiting them at their home until they went to Australia to be with their son and then holding a service for Christopher when they arrived back. He spent several years on the Gold Coast as an entertainer, and that in itself gave Cyril and Jenny the knowledge that at least their son gave people joy in their lives. Up to 2013 Jenny and Cyril will never get over the loss of their son Christopher but five years down the track and they are about to enjoy his children, Elijah aged 11, and Shaylee aged 8, who will visit soon with their mother, Myriam.
