The Football Huddle Diamond In The Rough: Cameron Dartez

Cameron Dartez is the starting

quarterback for Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, LA. As a junior, the 6’1 190lb quarterback led the Bears to a 7-3 regular season record and eventually a state championship. With Dartez at the helm, Catholic went on to beat heavily favored Zachary during the regular season and Evangel Christian Academy during their playoff run. Cameron finished last season passing for over 1600 yards and 12 TDs, while completing 63 percent of his throws. This season, Cameron has become one of the all-time best QB’s at Catholic with a second season with over 1,000 yards passing and a 75% compleation rating.

When did you start playing football? I started playing football when I was in the fourth grade at AllStar Football League at Parkview Baptist. What do you love about football? I like the competitive nature the game brings, I love scoring touchdowns, and I love winning the most. I’m a competitive guy so that’s the biggest thing I love about football.

What style of play best describes you? Definitely a passer that can make any throw on the field, but also can tuck and run it if I need to. We do a bunch of zone read stuff, so I have to be able to run the ball, and I ‘m a tough runner too, I’m tough to bring down.

Terry Matthews is a wide receiver for Dutchtown High School in Geismar, LA. Terry has a skillful set to his craft with great speed and vision. What do you love about football? I love the contact, scoring touchdowns and hitting people but mainly the contact because of my physicality I bring to the game. I like to go against people who has a more advantage than me. I love 50-

50 balls that I can go up and snag them. What separates you from others at football? I’m a very hard worker, I always stay on the grind. Putting in work in the weight room and at practice is what separates me. A lot of people want it but don’t want to put in the work. With me it’s my mindset I just want it more than others. I watch a lot of film on my opponents and on me as well to see where I can get better at. Also, I’m a coachable player, if my coach gets on me it is not for nothing it’s fora reason. Having that attitude will make me a better player so I always listen and fix what they coach me up on. What motivates you to play football? I just have a love for the game. I play with a chip on my shoulder. I just want to go harder than other players and earn my respect.

Diamond in the Rough: Cameron Amsted, Scotlandville Magnet High School Have you received any awards? Last year my junior season I received All-State for football. I have also been on the Honor Roll and I am in the Drama Club. This year and last year I have also been a part of the National Honor Society.

Cameron is a senior quarterback at Scotlandville High School. He has an overall grade of a 5.8 making him a 3 star prospect. He has an impressive GPA of 3.7 and attended various camps over the off season to prepare for this year. It is one of my favorite hobbies and it is a very strenuous extracurricular activity. I really enjoy playing and love everything about football. Do you play any other sports? My freshman year I was on the basketball team as well. Since then I decided to focus on strictly football.

How did you prepare in the off season for this year? I went to camps at ULL and McNeese. During the summer I focused on my footwork and the way I throw the ball. I spent a lot of time in the weight room working on my overall strength.

Sal Palermo III is a 6’2 200lb Quarterback from Live Oak High School in Watson, LA. Sal is a big time athlete and a gifted dual threat quarterback. He brings tremendous toughness to the Quarterback position and possesses top-notch arm strength. Sal has the ability to put the ball where he wants to and is an excellent running quarterback as well, having the speed and decisive instincts to be able to shake defenders and break open big plays. Sal has great awareness on the field to be able to extend plays and make strong throws on the run too. He was a 2nd Team All Parish and All District Honorable Mention his Junior season at Live Oak. Palermo has his sights set on leading his team to a deep playoff run in 2018. Height: 6’2 Weight: 200

What is it that makes you love the game? The brotherhood and being out there with your best friends. I love the competitiveness of the game and the intensity when its game time.

What is your best quality as a quarterback? I am smart and I can read the field quickly. My speed also sets me apart from others. What do you want to major in once you begin college? I would like to do civil engineering.

Who do you model your gameplay after? Baker Mayfield because of the competitiveness and fire he plays with and just refusing to lose. Also Drew Brees and Peyton Manning because of their mindset and their ability to prepare before games. What are you most motivated by? I just love to win. My motivation is wanting to succeed and doing the best you can for the guy next to you. I’m motivated by not letting my coaches or teammates down. Just wanting to succeed for them. What area of your game would you like to improve on this off season? Getting a little quicker and faster. Just working on having a little more burst coming through the hole. This is something you need as much as we run the ball.
