Dear Readers, This month we are taking a look at the recruiting classes for all twelve schools in the state. Each school has loaded up on new players, some schools looking for size and others looking for speed. We rated these players with my recruiting scale. This scale has five areas: size, speed, strength, technique, and hands. Each area is graded on a scale of 1-10 with 10 representing the best. The total score is the grade we give each recruit based on a scale and analysis of their measurables. Keep in mind that a magazine subscription (print or digital) is a great gift for those football lovers in your life. A single issue of the digital magazine will be $3.99 and a digital subscription will be $17.95. By purchasing a digital subscription you save $29.93 for the year! You can find the digital copy on our website under the new ‘digital magazine’ tab. You may be thinking that football season is about to end as college football season traditionally ends in December with Bowl games. However, football season never truly ends and we here at LGF love it! Additionally if you ever wondered what it would take to advertise with us here at LGF either in the magazine or online please contact our knowledgeable sales crew at (225) 931-8711 or louisianagridironfootball@gmail.com. Sincerely,

A. Bryson www.LouisianaGridironFootball.com

Football Runs Deep in The Heart Of Louisiana By: Traveon Anderson

The sport of football runs deep through the heart of Louisiana. Starting at a young age, football is instilled into the hearts and minds of young men as a means of competition, as well as way to further their education. Nestled within the state of Louisiana is small college located within the city of Pineville, LA, known as Louisiana College. This four-year, Baptist, institution may be considered a hidden gem to most, but to people such as Head Coach Justin Charles there is nothing but potential from his alma mater. A former player, turned coach, Justin Charles is adamant about Wildcat football and what the institution does for athletes academically. I had the pleasure of interviewing the newly named head coach, and I was able to get a glimpse of the type of person he is on and off the field.

When did you first get introduced into football? During the course of our interview, I wanted to understand the type of person Head Coach Charles was. I wanted to see what type of football background he had come from, being that he was a highly touted player at Louisiana College, but Coach Charles gave a response that I was not expecting. He explained that growing up, he did not really partake in football at early age like some children. While it may seem unbelievable as he is from Texas (where football reigns supreme), Coach Charles didn’t start playing football until Jr. High. In the year of 1992, at the age of 10, Coach Charles first developed a love for the game as he watched the Texas Longhorns play on television. As years passed, his first real introduction to organized football came in the 7th grade. Unlike most 7th graders, he did not participate in contact football, and instead played organized flag football. www.LouisianaGridironFootball.com

Can you describe your playing career? This may be only known to some, but Coach Charles is one of the most highly regarded players in Louisiana College history. He is ranked second all time for sacks at Louisiana College, as well as finishing fourth in career tackles. Charles was also an excellent return man, and he tallied five total kickoff returns, which is an LC, ASC and Louisiana collegiate record in all divisions. Although he became an excellent player, Coach Charles came from humble beginnings. He explained that he grew up being the runt out of all the players on the high school team. He showed extreme athletic promise, but his lack of size kept him on the junior varsity team. Charles did not find himself on the varsity squad until his senior season of high school. He began to explain to me that during that season, he fell into a position where he was needed, and he just did his job. In one season, HC Charles, went from a JV starter to a perennial all-star. His ability earned him All-District honors in one year of varsity play. As a senior Coach Charles was recruited by two colleges: Ouachita Baptist University located in Arkansas and Louisiana College. He took his lack of recruitment with a grain of salt, and still continued to relentlessly pursue his football dream. On his visit to Louisiana College, the school and the football program were under construction. They didn’t even have a football field, and they had to sell you a dream on what would eventually be. This did not deter Coach Charles, and he ultimately fell in love with the program, and from there he became what you know today.

Favorite Moment as a player? When I asked Coach Charles this question, he immediately described the memory that he can most vividly remember the most. He described his senior year at Louisiana College, and explained that it was freezing cold outside that night and that his team had countless seniors on it. They were playing Sul Ross State, and in his final debut as a Wildcat, Coach Charles wanted to leave it all on the field that night. This final game meant so much to Coach Charles, because if they won, that would mean they would finish above .500, and be the first team in school history to do it. The seniors and the team were playing for something bigger than themselves. He then went on to say that his favorite moment in the game, came at the start of the second half. Charles kick return abilities had been somewhat sidelined during the first half of play, but once he was placed in the game to show case his natural ability, he

did not disappoint. At the start of the second half, Sul Ross State kicked the ball directly to Charles, and he returned that opening kickoff. This act of brilliance ultimately helped his team get in a position to win the game.

Why stick around at Louisiana College? I had wondered why a player, and coach who had been in Louisiana for so long, would want to stick around for a little bit longer. Coach Charles laughed and explained to me to that he was finishing his degree at the time, so he was always still around. He also decided to stick around because of coaches such as Vance Morris, Buck Buchanan, C. Howton, and Coach Mescord . These outstanding gentlemen had influenced Coach Charles throughout his life and his playing career, and he did not feel right about leaving Louisiana College so soon. He saw what direction the program was going in, and how his historic senior season began to change the culture around Louisiana College. Head Coach Charles is a persistent man, and he believes that you should always finish what you start, and he was not done with the program just yet.

What is your mission statement as a coach? Justin Charles wanted to become a coach because coaches were some of the people that influenced him the most throughout his life. When he was asked what his mission statement was, Coach Charles explained that he believes in commitment. As a player and student, you need to be committed to what you’re doing at all times, not just on the football field. Whether at practice or volunteer work, you need to be committed to doing the best job possible. This idea of commitment is the basis of Coach Charles’ mission statement. Coach Charles also believes in having good attitude when you show up, as well as giving maximum effort. He also wants you to show that you love what you’re doing, and that you’re passionate about it.

Do you prioritize education?

Education and college athletics may seem taboo to some, but to Coach Charles education is vital. When proposed this question, Coach Charles was quick to explain that his team has a 92% graduation rate for players that finish their playing career at Louisiana College. He believes in the idea that the ball will stop one day, and that as a young adult you will need something to fall back on if necessary. By having education and graduating from school, you have an automatic back up

plan. Coach Charles also explained that the school and coaches are heavily involved with the player’s academics as well, by having assigned study halls and making sure players attend class unfailingly.

What style of coach are you?

When I asked Coach Charles this questions he immediately laughed and explained that I would have to ask his players this one. After some thought he was able to explain to me that he is a player’s coach. He enjoys building relationships on and off the fields with his players, and making his team into a family. He believes in in putting trust in his players and them putting trust in him. He also stated that you have to have to trust him, until he gives you a reason not to trust him. During practices, Coach Charles is particularly laid back, unless players are slacking. He has fast-tempo style practices, which he believes are efficient.

Strengths as a coach? This question was a little different than the rest because I asked Coach Charles to analyze his ability as a coach. Coaching is something Justin Charles is naturally talented at, so it may be difficult to answer. After pondering the question, Coach Charles explained to me that organization is one of his biggest strengths. Having everything organized makes things run smoother. He also believes in having a good open line of communication between his players and coaching staff.

Qualities you look for in athletes? The main quality Coach Charles wants in any athlete is character. Some may deem that idea of character insignificant when determining athletic ability, but Coach Charles knows that players without good character won’t succeed. Even if a player comes in with poor character in the beginning, Charles believes that as long as they want to be molded into something better, that they can and will succeed.

Who are some of your best players?

This question was easy for Coach Charles as he was able to rattle off numerous names in succession. The first name that Coach Charles promptly said was Orel Ledet, Jr., a 5’11 defensive back. He described him as a man amongst boys, and that throughout his career as a Wildcat, he started at three different positions. He also named numerous other players such as Joshua Pickett, Richard Green, Anthony Hargraves, Evan Woods, and Ryan Williams/Morris. As well as Wayne Griffen, who he described as extremely intelligent, and Leondre James, who he described as a deadly wide receiver.

him into the man he is today. He explained that during his coaching career, coaching has taught him to grasp and comprehend players of different backgrounds. There is not one player that is the same on his team, and coaching has helped him to strengthen that trait. Coaching has also allowed Charles to understand young adults and influence them in a positive way.

Favorite moment as a coach? Least favorite moment?

Coach Charles sees the possibility of amazing progression over next season. Once he took over as head coach, Charles wanted to work on the overall character of the team. He had a goal to find players who were 100% committed to the program and their education. He explained that currently there has been a shift in the dynamic of the team, and that the character of his young men have improved on and off the field. In the classroom his players have done great things, and their achievements, and high GPA’s culminated into the teams GPA average increasing by .4 points.

When asked this question, Coach Charles had two separate moments that he chose as his favorites. The first moment came during the final game of last year’s football season. He explained that he witnessed his team played a complete game from start to finish and that he was able to see his team come together as a unit. He then explained to me that his second favorite moment came last year, on August 28th, and on that day thirty-one players gave their lives to Christ. The moment brought Charles immense happiness. On the other hand, Charles did not have a specific least favorite moment, but he was able to describe a feeling that coaching sometime brought upon him. When losing close games or when tragic events happen to his players, Coach Charles becomes a father figure to some, and having to look that young man in eyes and see that he is hurting affects him the most. Coach Charles describes this as something that tears him part.

Diamond in the Rough: Jamal Brown Jr., Belaire High School Jamal is a 6’1″, 180 lbs, quarterback that recently transferred to Belaire High School from Friendship Capitol High School. He threw for 1200 yards and rushed for another 300 while at Capitol High School as a junior and only hopes to improve on those numbers as a senior. Jamal has good throwing mechanics and a quick release. Bench: 300 lbs 40 yard: 4.6 seconds GPA: 3.0 When did you start playing football? When I was about 3 years old, I started playing quarterback at first. I think I was “born to be a quarterback.”

Who are some of your biggest influences? My mom first, she’s like my real back bone. She’s really pushing me with college and everything. Then my dad, he’s trying to get me in college with the athletic part. And my mom with the academic part. One other influence outside my family is “Fuel” that’s his nickname, I forgot his real name, but he played at Nichols State and arena football and he’s like my personal trainer. My pastor, who is always pushing me to be smarter with my finances. Coach Carl Thomas and Derek Guidry, those two coaches pushed me physically. Do you think attitude is a big factor in winning? Yes sir, oh yes sir! If you’re arrogant and play for yourself then you’re not coachable. You need to be able to listen, and stay humble. Attitude is a big part of the football team.

Did you play any other sports growing up? I played a lot of sports actually, I was a real athlete. I played football, baseball, basketball, and soccer. I stopped playing soccer when I was about eight I think, stopped playing baseball when I was like 14, and basketball when I was like nine years old. But I love football, I just love contact sports.

How does athletics make you a better student? I think my books, are making me a better athlete. Because if you don’t have the books you can not play. So why not keep it the other way around?

What do you love most about football? I love that nervous feeling you have at the beginning of the game. That tension, when you look over at your opponent, and you can feel that tension in the air. I love it because my adrenaline starts pumping. What do you think a strength is in your game play? Reading coverage, that’s my strength. If I make a bad pass it’ll be the What do you like best about competing? right read. I’m not going to say it won’t happen, but I can read a covCompeting brings out character, it shows what type of a person erage. you are. Can you overcome adversity of your opponent? Can you persevere through the trials that you have? I think that What do you think needs some work in the off-season? football has a connection to life – if you get knocked down, you My strength in my legs. I have chicken legs right now. I’ve been workhave to get back up. Every time you get back up you have to ing on them for a while, like today we were doing stuff with a compete again. weighted vest for speed and agility. What style of game play best describes you? I ask the coach to let me run the ball once or twice to start a game because I am kind of nervous at the start of a game. So when I get hit that kind of calms me down and I’m ready to play.

What would be a successful season to you? Every senior out of my class goes DI or DII. I hope that everyone in my class gets to go to college. I want my 2019 class to go to college. I don’t want to come back to Baton Rouge one day and see someone that I know working at McDonald’s or something like that. If everyWhat were your goals this previous season, and did you meet all one in my class goes to college I’ll be thankful of them? I wanted to pass for over 1,000 yards and rush for 500. I made What is your favorite offense to run? the first one but didn’t make it on the second. I fell short on I love West Coast Offense, the spread offense, that’s four receivers that. I threw for 1,200 yards and had 300 rushing yards. and a running back. There’s so much you can do out of it. You can run the option out of it, you can run complimentary routes out of it. Now that you’re going to a new school, are you keeping those goals, or are you making new ones? What would you like to do when you graduate from college? I think that since it’s 5A and not 3A my new goals are to pass for I would like to start my own electrical engineering company that at least 1,600 and rush for 500. Yeah, rush for 500 since I didn’t helps with construction companies or help people build buildings. reach that one yet. I think I need to bump up my goals a little bit www.LouisianaGridironFootball.com
