A Note From Lauren Wow! What a nice long Mardi Gras season it’s been! This year, we were invited to eight balls. Yes, EIGHT. As we go to print, we still have two more to attend: Grande Bois tomorrow night and Krewes des Pirates on Saturday. And in spite of all these invitations, there were still a few free weekends. Which was nice. We got to relax a bit. Those short seasons are insane, with balls actually starting before Twelfth Night and back-to-back balls every weekend. Towards the end, we’re all pretty exhausted—and we still have to ride the float on Fat Tuesday. Along with being a very long season, it’s been a very cold one—the coldest in years. There’s nothing worse than going out in a formal gown and open-toed heels when it’s 32 degrees. We’ve never had to deal with this very much down here—until now. Let me tell you, all the ladies brought out their minks this year. And it wasn’t just for show this time. Of course, no matter how long or
how short the season, I still manage to get sick during Mardi Gras. It never fails. I’m burning the candle at both ends, plus I’m getting this big extra issue out, and it always takes its toll. But that’s OK. I have never missed a ball yet, and I don’t intend to miss any this weekend. I’ll just load myself up with cold remedies and hope for the best. We hope you’ve enjoyed Mardi Gras 2014 as much as we have. That’s what it’s all about in Southwest Louisiana—enjoying life to the fullest. And thank you for letting us bring you our fifth annual Lake Charles Mardi Gras edition! Happy Mardi Gras!

Not just a local event, Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras attracts tourists from other areas who travel here to witness the fun and excitement that we all know. Grand Marshal of the Krewe of Krewes Parade
Merchant Parade Marshal A native of Welsh, Billy Navarre graduated from Welsh High School and attended McNeese State University. At 23, he went to work in the automobile business for a small dealership in Crowley, where he set records for four consecutive years. Chevrolet asked him to become one of their dealers at age 26. He eventually purchased Hyundai, Honda, and the Equus and Genesis luxury line for Hyundai. 2012 was a big year when he added Cadillac to his business. Today, Billy Navarre is ranked as the second largest locally owned business in the five-parish area. He is an outstanding corporate citizen and has donated to just about every cause that has come to his attention. He and his wife Carrie currently reside in Lake Charles. Navarre has five sons and one daughter. His four oldest sons are managers at the dealership, and his two youngest children attend EDS. Navarre is so proud to be a part of this great community and is extremely honored to be selected as this year’s Parade Marshal for the Merchant Parade.
Bernard Beaco, a native of New Orleans, came to Lake Charles in 1955 to work at Boston High School as band director and music teacher. He retired in 1984 and spent the next 25 years working as the director of an after-school tutorial program. Also in 1984, Beaco became a member of the original commission that was the predecessor to the current Mardi Gras Association, serving as board president and chairman of various committees within the organization. The vice president of the board of the Mardi Gras Museum, he was the Grand Duke of Misrule in 1996 and is the co-founder of the Krewe De Classique, serving as Captain for nine years. He is also a charter member of the Krewe De Charlie-Sioux. He and his lovely wife Dolores have served as King and Queen of both krewes. Besides Mardi Gras, Beaco is active with his social fraternity, KAPPA ALPHA PSI, numerous church-related organizations, and is currently serving his fourth term on the board of the SWLA Convention & Visitors Bureau. He is the Diocesan Representative of the local section of the Equestrian Order of The Holy Sepulcher, serves as an usher at St. Henry Catholic Church, and is a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver. Beaco and his wife Dolores, also a retired educator, have one daughter, Yolande, a Procurement Analyst with NASA in Washington, D.C. They have one grandson, Jason, and two great grandchildren, Janiya and Jakorei.
Van Rembert Motor Gras Parade Marshal Van Rembert says it is a great honor to be asked to lead the 2014 Motor Gras Parade in the city where he was born and raised. His hobby for over 55 years is changing the performance and looks of the automobile. At a very early age, Rembert began to build model cars and especially loved the Corvette. At 15, he started building hot rods. He was allowed to go to SOWELA in the mornings and high school in the afternoon, which gave him access to the shops and two instructors that prepared him to make a good living while pursuing his hobby. He is working on his final restoration, a 1972 Corvette convertible, which he hopes to have finished by the summer. Rembert has a placard in my shop that reads “Please don’t judge my cars, for my true riches are in heaven,” and he says that’s his real priority. Mardi Gras 2014
Creighton Guillory Children’s Parade Marshal Creighton James Anthony Guillory is the son of Craig and Jackie Simien Guillory. He is very active senior at LaGrange High where he is a member of the football, track, FBLA and the Drama Club. He is a member of National Honor Society with a 3.4 GPA. He is a three-year sport trainer and has learned many techniques that he plans to use when he attends Southern University this fall on a trainer scholarship. Creighton is also a Bass 2 in the TOP Louisiana-Lagrange Choir. He attends Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where is involved in the young adult choir and CYO, and is a lector and altar server. A member of the Knights of Peter Claver, he is currently serving his second term as Junior Supreme Knight and has been appointed to their National Foundation Board. Creighton was voted the distinct honor of Mr. Personality by his peers at the December 2013- Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Cotillion. MARCH 3, 2014 05
Marilyn Dawdy loves to decorate. “It’s been my passion and joy for over 20 years,” she said. “I turn my house upside down six times a year. Some people think it makes no sense, but it does to me.” By celebrating the seasons in such a lavish way, Marilyn says it brings back the joy of times past. “I remember looking at the little snow globes as a child at Christmas, and all the rabbits at Easter. It brings back such memories for me.” Children especially love to visit her home during these special seasons. “To see the sparkle in their eyes and their belief in the magic

of the season makes all the hard work and unpacking the multitude of boxes worthwhile,” she says. And Marilyn especially enjoys decorating for Mardi Gras. “It’s our special season, with all of the krewes gathering for their many balls and pageants. The little children usually don’t get to celebrate as the adults do, so it’s fun for them to visit and enjoy my home.” The Dawdys’ sprawling home in Sulphur is the perfect place to showcase the fabulous masks, wreaths, ostrich feathers and other Mardi Gras memorabilia they have collected through the years. Even better, Marilyn displays the magnificent backpieces and regal trains that she and her husband Ed wore when they were King and Queen of Krewe de la Famille. Designed and created in New Orleans, they are one of a kind and were created especially for them. Come Ash Wednesday, all these incredible decorations will be taken down and packed carefully away until January 6, 2015—replaced by chicks and rabbits and flowers heralding Easter and Springtime. Because a decorator’s work is never done.

Imperial Calcasieu Krewe of Krewes, Inc. was formed in the summer of 1979 for the purpose of uniting the area Mardi Gras krewes and providing an annual Mardi Gras Parade for the general public of the Imperial Calcasieu area. The organization has grown from the first-year krewes of Cosmos, Contraband, Mystique, Omega, Famille, and Barataria to almost 60 krewes and their representatives. Presently, the krewes join together to stage the Twelfth Night Celebration, The Royal Gala, and the Krewe of Krewes Parade under the direction of the area Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana Organization. Krewe of Krewes also helps support the Mardi Gras Museum with all the area krewes represented through costumes and krewe history.

Krewe Des Amis celebrated its 34th year on Saturday, February 15 in the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum. The theme for the ball this year was “Mardi Gras... There’s An App for That.” The venue was transformed that night for Krewe members and guests to celebrate this year’s Mardi Gras season. The 2013 Royal Court was introduced for the final time: King and Queen Len and Brenda Ford and their Dukes and Duchesses, Corey and Dana Hebert, Casey and Dee Dee Brimmage, and Dr. Craig and April Morton. The first 2014 Court couple was Brian and Nina Abshire as The Duke and Duchess of Social Media Apps. Duke Brian is a self-employed truck driver contracted to
Boise Cascade. He enjoys hanging out by his pool, spending time with his grandkids and camping with his family. Duchess Nina works for Calcasieu Parish School Boards as a bus driver. She is a member of the Bus Driver Association and enjoys spending time with family, camping and 4-wheeler riding. The couple resides in Lake Charles and have two children, Rachelle, 34 and Josh, 30, and six grandchildren: Morgan, 16; Tyler, 8; Sara, 6; Shelby, 13; Kylie, 11 and Isabella, 5. Jonathon and Chauntel Mathieu were the Duke and Duchess of Gaming Apps. Duke Jonathon is a manager at Keith’s Paint and Body. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, 4-wheeler riding, hunting and tailgating. Duchess Chauntel is a
graduate of McNeese State University with a degree in General Studies. She is a stayat-home mom and is also a fitness instructor at Christus Athletic Club. Chauntel is currently serving on Our Lady Queen of Heaven’s Capital Campaign Committee and volunteers at OLQH School where her children attend. She enjoys dancing, exercising, scrapbooking, shopping and spending time with family and friends. The Duke and Duchess are members of St. Martin de Porres Church where they are a sponsor for newly engaged couples, and where they have participated in and served on ACTS teams. The couple has three children: Grant, 8; Connor, 7 and Macie, 5. Dr. Luke and Alicia Williams were the Duke and Duchess of Music Apps. Duke Luke is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician for Imperial Health. He attended McNeese State University where he earned a BS in Pre-Med, going on to LSU School of Medicine to earn his MD. He did his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas Health and Science Center at San Antonio and his Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. He is a member of Calcasieu Parish Medical Society, American College of Chest Physicians and Louisiana State Medical Society. Duchess Alicia attended SOWELA where she earned her LPN. She is currently a nurse at PRN Dermatology and Advanced Aesthetics with Dr. Shondra Smith, and is a member of the Calcasieu Parish Medical Society. She is also a fitness instructor at Christus Athletic Club. The couple reside in Lake Charles and attends St. Michael and All Angels Church. emerged to meet their family and friends. King Jason is a Senior Clinical Application Analysis for Memorial Hermann. He attended McNeese State University and enjoys watching sports, especially football and NASCAR, and spending time with family and friends. Queen Meagan attended McNeese State University where she earned a General Business degree. She works as a patient access representative for Memorial Hermann and enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and friends and supporting McNeese Cowboys. The couple resides in Spring, Texas and attends St. Edward’s Catholic Church. They have one beautiful daughter Meredith,19 months. The krewe then toasted their Royalty and was treated to a final promenade by the court. Then it was time to party with music by Time Machine. Krewe of Athena’s 3-Ring CIRCUS The Krewe of Athena celebrated its 12th Mardi Gras Ball on January 25 with the theme “3-Ring Circus.” MCs were Lee Peck and Mallory Padgett. Music was by the NikLBeer band of Acadiana. Captain Athena XII, Mary Jo Bayles, served as the “Ringmaster” for the night. Captain Mary Jo is a Columbia, LA native and longtime Sulphur and DeQuincy resident. She is a graduate of West Monroe High, attended UL Monroe and is the City Planner for DeQuincy. She attends DeQuincy United Methodist Church and is a member of the Krewe of Cosmos, the Chennault International Airshow committee, the DQ Federated Service League, CHAPS of DQ and serves the United Way. Mary Jo is married to Dr. Pete Bayles and they have two daughters: Mallory (and Dean) Padgett and Madison Wall. They also have 2 grandsons, Ethan and Cooper Padgett. The krewe honored the young adult children of members by presenting them as Princesses and Gents. Bethany Wilkinson is the daughter of Mitzi and Scott Wilkinson of Sulphur. Kerri Beth Racca is the daughter of Amy and Brandon Dever of Tomball, TX and Chris and Wendy Racca. Carrie Denison is the daughter of Denise and Scott Denison of Sulphur. Christina Guidry is the daughter of Phyllis and James Guidry of Lake Charles. Elizabeth McVicker is the daughter of Tina and David McVicker of Lacassine. Clair Guidry is the daughter of Celena and Paul Lynn Guidry of Lacassine. Austin Land is the son of Jessica and Glenn Wilfer of Carlyss and Werner and Michelle Land of Holmwood. Alex Like is the son of Kristine and Darrell Lyons of Westlake. Duchess Thalia XII, Vanessa Clavier, is a lifelong resident of Sulphur and a 1990 graduate of Sulphur High. She holds a BS in Radiologic Technology from McNeese with a Nuclear Medicine Specialty from Baylor College of Medicine, and is employed at West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital. The Duchess is a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, the SWLSRT and the Krewe of Chaos. She is the daughter of Tony and Della Clavier of Sulphur. Duchess Aglaia XII, Tiffany Simon, is a native of West Monroe and resides in Lake Charles. She is a graduate of West Monroe High and holds a Doctorate of Pharmacy from UL Monroe. Duchess Tiffany is a member of St. Martin de Porres Church, Krewe du Lac and Kappa Epsilon. She is the Pharmacy Manager for Fred’s Pharmacy in Moss Bluff. Tiffany and her husband Aaron are parents to five sons: twins Zander and Zachary, Zane, Gage and Bryce. Duchess Euphrosyne XII, Cindy Vincent, is a lifelong resident of Sulphur and a graduate of Sulphur High and Demmons School of Beauty. Duchess Cindy has been a cosmetologist for 29 years, currently at Latest Cuts in Sulphur. She is a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Catholic Daughters, the Altar Society and the Krewe of Cosmos. Cindy and her husband Lee have two sons, Brandon and Justin, and six grandchildren: Hannah, Hallie, Collyne, Adam, Alec and Harlee. Queen Hera XII, Shawntel Alleman Stacy is a lifelong resident of Sulphur. She is a graduate of Sulphur High School and Lamar University’s School of Nursing and is a nurse at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Her Royal Highness is married to Jake Stacy and they have twin boys: Braydon and Carson.

The beautiful Chateau du Calcasieu was converted into a flashy Sports Bar for “The Wide World of Sports,” the Ninth Annual Krewe des Bons Amis Ball held on January 25. Charles Cubbage, president 2013-2014 and a founding member of the Krewe, greeted the members and guests. He introduced the staff in the Press Box, Master of Ceremonies Justin Morris and color announcer Jimmy “Cosell” (founding member Jimmy Bastow). As the crowd stood, the 2013 King Henry VIII and Queen Anne VIII, Brad and Diana Hebert were presented. They made their final walk looking sporty in their bejeweled black and white referee costumes. Captain Jody Fawvor and Co-Captain Christine Draper received the Official Torch of the festivities from the Press Box and ignited the flame. The relay ended with the sound of the Captain’s whistle, signifying the beginning of the Ball. Jody Fawvor is a resident of Lebleu Settlement and has been employed by Phillips 66 for the past 14 years. She enjoys spending time with her boyfriend David Gibson and his daughter Karli, as well as hunting, volunteering and bike riding. Christine Draper is a founding member of Krewe des Bons Amis and resides in Sulphur. She is employed as a nurse at Stonebridge Assisted Living and has two sons, Charlie and Chance. The members and guests rose to their feet for the presentation of King Henry IX and Queen Anne IX, Steven and Tracy Collins. The Queen’s dress was flowing royal purple chiffon with a rhinestone embellished V-shaped halter top and skirt. The King looked handsome in his black tuxedo with purple lapels. To the sounds of Jock Jam remix, they strutted around the dance floor throwing beads and waving to the crowd. They were then seated on their thrones to rule over the remainder of the Presentation. Steven and Tracy have been married for three years and reside in Sulphur. The King is employed by Chemical Waste Management and the Queen is employed by Sulphur Electric. Together they have five children, Alexys, Ashtyn, Dylan, Tyler, and Trey. Krewe des Bons Amis is well known for their outrageous skits and this year was no exception. To the song “Hey Mickey” by Toni Basil, the Bons Amis Cheerleaders Charles Cubbage, Dennis Lavergne, Mike Allen and David Gibson entertained the guests with their short skirts, tight shirts and crazy antics. The Duke and Duchess of LSU, Ryan Doucet and Renee Baker, were introduced next while the “LSU Pre-Game” by the LSU Marching Band played in the background. The stage was set with a tailgate spot at an LSU game, complete with a crawfish pot, a game of washers, plenty of beer and chairs to lounge in. The couple paraded around the room throwing beads to the tune of “Tiger Tailgate Party” by Travis Matte. The Duke was attired in a purple suit with gold shirt and gold sequin trim, a purple plaid hat and LSU beads. The Duchess looked fabulous

in her gold two-piece suit embellished with purple fleur de lis and purple feathers at the hem. Long purple gloves and a wide brimmed purple hat with feathers accented her costume. Duke Ryan resides in Lake Charles and is employed by Citgo Petroleum as a senior designer. He is the proud father of Sydney Doucet and together they participate in many Up4Downs and Ainsley’s Angels activities. Duchess Renee is a resident of Sulphur and is a Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Cosmetologist and Notary Public. She has one daughter, Morgan Sage German. Renee enjoys skydiving, horseback riding and traveling with her fiancé, Dr. Mike Beasley. The second skit of the night was a pair of Sumo Wrestlers (Christine Draper and Hailey Draper) in full inflatable costumes dancing and twerking to “Kung Fu Fighting.” The Duchess of Crossfit, Michelle Gaspard, was introduced by her class that was already in session and being led by a Richard Simmons look-a-like. She made her entrance to the song “Independent Woman” by Kelly Clarkson, and proceeded to show them how it is really done! In her personal life, Michelle is an avid Crossfit participant and her claim that it is a hobby is an understatement. To her, it is a way of life. She is very active, participating in various 5K runs especially if it raises money for one of her favorite charities, breast cancer research. She is the bookkeeping manager for Langley, Williams and Company, CPAs. Michelle resides in Moss Bluff and has three children, Austin, Luke and Josee. Last skit but not the least was the Bons Amis Hot-trotters representing the Harlem Globetrotters. From their red and white striped shorts and blue and white shirts, they looked like the real thing (almost!). The Hot Trotters performed many daring basketball tricks from rolling the ball along their arms, spinning the ball with one finger and hiding the ball under a shirt. The finale was making

a point shooting into a hula hoop and yelling “Touchdown!!” Members of the team were Leslie Cubbage, Carrie Cubbage, Anna Allen, Judy Lavergne and Jackie Bastow. The Royal Toast followed as members and guests celebrated the 2014 Court. Immediately following, King Henry IX and Queen IX led the court and all guests in the Second Line Dance. By Jackie Bergeron During the carnival season, traditions run rampant. From the King Cake and Twelfth Night to the Second Line and tossing of throws, customs old and new come out to play. My paternal grandparents were a Cajun couple from Eunice, speaking both Cajun French and English, so it is no secret that I was raised with deep Acadian roots and a love for the unique traditions. My favorite Mardi Gras tradition (next to the savory King cake) is the Courir de Mardi Gras or Mardi Gras Run. It is easy to spot a “Mardi Gras” (as runners are called) displayed by their colorful costumes and pointy hats, often carrying a whip. (Yes, I said a whip!) Origins of courir date back to the customs of Catholic Medieval France from fete de la quemande or “feast of begging” when begging from house to house was socially acceptable. Most of the land was owned by the upper class and the poor would gather in groups and make their way from castle to manor to beg for food at the end of the long winter due to food shortages. In return for their generosity, beggars would perform a song or dance. During the carnival season, the people would celebrate with contests and races

and would hold processions through the streets whipping themselves or onlookers to rid the body and soul of all sin. The use of a burlap whip is derived from folk traditions of pre-Christian Brittany, a Celtic enclave on the northwest French coast where the original settlers of Acadia came from before migrating to North America during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the mid-to-late 18th century, Acadians were forcibly deported from Nova Scotia by the English and settled what is now the Acadian region of South Louisiana, where the “Cajuns” held on to many of their traditional customs. This determination to hold on to their religious customs and faith has been a major factor in celebrating the joy of life or la joie de vivre that is characteristic of the Cajun life and culture. The traditional courir starts in the early morning hours as the riders or runners gather at a central meeting place. Le Capitaine, or Captain and leader of the group, usually rides on horseback, wears a cape, carries a small flag and is commonly unmasked. After he and his Co-Capitaines (unmasked also) organize the runners to explain the rules and traditions to be fol-
lowed, the bands begin to play and the Capitaine leads them on the route. The Capitaine is the first to approach the houses and asks for permission to enter onto the property. In the spirit of frivolity, individual runners try to sneak onto the property, but are held back by Capitaines who sometimes brandish a plaited burlap whip. Claude Durio, co-Capitaine of Tee-Mamou Courir says, “These whips are used to maintain discipline during the Courir de Mardi Gras. They are used by the captain and his subordinates [co-captains] only.” Whips are designed to be flexible and not inflict any serious damage onto their victims, and produce a loud noise for the edification of onlookers. Participants claim one has not fully participated until they have been whipped. Revelers also play a variety of pranks on the farmers and beg for food for the community gumbo, the prize ingredient being a live chicken that is thrown into the air for drunken runners to chase through muddy yards and fields. The traditional costumes are derived from costumes in early France worn to conceal participants’ identities and allow parody of authority figures and
society. The costumes, meant to mock nobility, clergy, and the educated, are made from old work clothes decorated with cloth remnants and pieces of feed sack material, as many participants could not afford material strictly for the event. This led to the vibrant patchwork style and mismatched patterns that are cut in strips that are fringed and sewn onto garments. The revelers also wear the cone-shaped hats, or capuchons, to mock the tall, pointy hats worn by noble women, as well as miter hats or mortarboards. The hats are decorated to match, or intentionally mismatch, the costumes. The masks are made of ordinary wire mesh window screen with attached large protruding noses and can include animal features, hair, fur, or tails. For many Cajuns, whether they run or not, Mardi Gras is not just a diversion. It is a deeply meaningful part of their religious, ethnic, regional, and community identity. Once you run a Mardi Gras, it is very difficult to stand on the sidelines and watch. So the next time you see a “Mardi Gras” in their full colorful regalia, don’t be afraid to play with them, for it is what the Mardi Gras season is all about. Passé de la Bon Temps!

The Krewe du Bon Coeur celebrated its 17th Annual Presentation and Ball Saturday, February 1 at Habibi Shrine Center. This year’s theme was “A Lil’ Bit Country/A Lil’ Bit Rock and Roll.” Music was provided by B.B. and Company of Beaumont. Master of Ceremonies Dale Mann requested everyone to stand and pay tribute to our country with the presentation of our nation’s colors by veterans and krewe members Kent and Becky Vincent. Captain 2014 Amy N. Grimes took the stage representing Dolly Parton in a costume designed by Valerie Smith and Don Marx of DVAL Designs of Sulphur. The setting for the stage depicted the Grand Ole Opry of Nashville. This year’s debutantes included Amelia Claire Thibodeaux, daughter of krewe members Gregory and Alice Thibodeaux; Brooke Noelle Nugent, daughter of krewe member Henry Nugent and Joey Black; Alexis Renee Anderson, niece of krewe member Charles Anderson; and Morgan Elizabeth Dailey, daughter of krewe members Chris and Lorri Dailey. Next, charter board members and their spouses were introduced representing the stars of The Grand Ole Opry and were greeted by Capt. Amy Grimes. Capt. wife Carrol portraying Minnie Pearl. Vice President Amy Grimes presented her husband R.J. who came out as Porter Wagoner. Secretary Paul Schuldes as Kenny Rogers was escorted by his wife Jackie representing Reba McEntire. Last, but by no means least, was Social Director Eric Lamendola as Willie Nelson. Then, the 2014 Court Couples were presented to the krewe and guests. Duke and Duchess of the Grand Ole Opry were Arnold Hinton and Linda Mesh. Duke and Duchess of the Roxy Theater were Dustan Abshire and Shayne Cormier. Duke and Duchess of the Country Hall of Fame were Robbie Vanicor and Andrea Wyatt. And, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was represented by Hank Douglas and Karla David. Finally, the Royal Couple, King Bon Coeur XVII Pierre Malus and Queen Bon Coeur XVII Michele Landry made their appearance. King Bon Coeur Pierre Malus made his grand entrance to Classic Rock and was escorted by President Kim Vaughan. Pierre and his wife Debbie are the proud owners of Dairy Barn on Nelson Road and in Sulphur, which was voted best hamburger in town. Debbie is the Environmental Services Manager for the Sabine River Authority of Texas. Pierre and Debbie currently reside in DeQuincy and have three children, Mindi, Maureen and Pierre, two grandchildren, Donavyn and Carson, and one grandchild on the way. corted by Dr. Roy Vaughan. Michele is originally from Vinton and resides in Sulphur with her son Caleb. A charter member of the krewe, Michele works as an inside sales person for Controlworx, Inc., in Westlake. In addition to her participation in the Krewe, Michele loves spending time at their camp along the Calcasieu River. She also enjoys hunting trips with her son and spending time with family and friends. After a toast by Captain Amy Grimes, krewe members performed
a skit and the Royalty finished the presentation with a Royal Promenade. Members and their guests enjoyed viewing scenes projected on two 9’x12’ screens from the previous 16 years created by krewe member Allison Patrick, who also designed this year’s doubloon. Krewe de Carnivale celebrated Mardi Gras in grand and glorious style at the Lake Charles Civic Center’s Contraband Room on January 25. This year, the krewe chose “A Night of Myths, Legends, and Lore” as the theme for their annual Mardi Gras Mega Party. A costume-optional masked ball, guests and members alike transformed themselves into favorite mythological or legendary creatures and characters. A wide array of magical characters was in attendance, ranging from mermaids, fairies, and gods to gnomes, werewolves and aliens. For the festive evening, guests entered through a stylized fantasy forest in the clouds to arrive at a whimsically decorated

heavenly ballroom. Starting off the evening, the Master of Ceremonies, Ball Captain, Mark Young, offered a traditional Irish toast to the members and guests. Mark, a native of Homer City, Pennsylvania, is the son of Bill and Judy Young. Mark is employed CITGO Petroleum Corporation as a procurement manager and makes his home in Moss Bluff with his cat “Minime.” The Ball Captain portrayed “Lucky the Leprechaun” dressed in a dapper green tail coat and knee pants topped off with an emerald bowler. As Captain, he opened the festivities of the evening with the introduction of King and Queen of Carnivale 2014, Tony Duhon and Kelli Barnes.
King Tony, a native of Lake Charles, is the son of Reggie and Barbara Duhon, also of Lake Charles. Tony currently resides in Lafayette and is employed as an environmental data specialist for eDataPro, LLC. Queen Kelli, originally from Sulphur, is the mother of three children; Jacob, Kaleb and Addie Garrison. Kelli has worked in the non-profit sector in SWLA for the past 20 years devoting her time to women’s issues, including, sexual and domestic violence and HIV. She is the daughter of Michael and Chloe Connella. The Royal Couple portrayed woodland fairies complete with gossamer wings and golden crowns. Ornate masks mounted on rustic
staffs concealed their true identities. The King and Queen would like to thank Regina Duhon Pihlgren, the sister of the King and Charmaine and Andy Anderson as well as the entire Krewe de Carnivale for all their help in making their reign a memorable one. Krewe de Carnivale has two traditions, unique to the area. For the first, krewe members take to the stage of the Contraband Room throughout the evening to whip the party crowd into a frenzy with their parade-style bead tosses. For the other tradition, a napkin toss, guests are invited to pitch thousands of paper napkins to the sound of the disco classic “Love is in the Air” capping off the evening.

Krewe of Chaos held its 9th Annual Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, March 1, in the L’Auberge Casino Resort Ballroom. This year’s theme was “Chaos…Wild Wild West.” Before circling the wagon this evening, Captain Karah Wilson introduced all those in cahoots with Krewe of Chaos which included Board Members and Officers, along with 2013-2014 Chairs and Co-chairs: Finance Officer Scott Jackson, Captain-Elect Chelle Martin, Special Event Chair Chair Vanessa Clavier and CoChair Alicia Silver, Float Chair Carl Monceaux and Co-Chair Scott Stringer, Ball Chair Chelle Martin, Royal Court Chair Colleen Desselle and Co-Chair Cindy Desselle, and Historical Chair Nicole Jackson. Bidding a happy trail farewell, members and guests saw the 2013 Royal Court along with outgoing King Chaos VII Joby DeLome and Queen Gaea VII Jade DeLome ride off into the sunset. Then it was time to meet the Royalty of 2014! Our royal couples embodied the good and the bad of legendary Wild Wild West characters of the past. Get ready to be wowed! Representing Duchess Annie Oakley and Duke Wild Bill Hickok were Meagan and Paul Lirette. Duchess Meagan was born in Crowley, whereas Paul came from Houma to settle in Sulphur. are educated. She teaches 2nd grade and holds a Master’s in Education from McNeese State. He’s been Captain of the Lake Charles Fire Department for the past 14 years and is currently working on a degree in Fire Science at LSUE. While crossing the border, they found their newest bandits, Chihuahuas Isabell and Bella. He lays down the law and she’s rootin’ tootin’. Representing Duchess Miss Kitty and Duke Marshall Dillon were Leslie and Eddie LeDoux. Leslie comes from the border town of Vinton and Eddie patrolled the streets of Sulphur. She hog-tied him three years ago. Laying down the law will come in handy later with his two daughters Haylee 1 and Kate 8. Leslie is a graduate of Vinton High and later earned a Mass Comm degree at LSU, which she utilizes at Lamar Outdoor Advertising. Eddie also graduated from Sulphur High and currently rustles up industrial sales for W. W. Grainger. These shooters enjoy tailgating with friends and family. Don’t fence this couple in. Representing Duchess Dale Evans and Duke Roy Rogers were Earlene and Chad Stapleton. Earline was born in Oakdale while Chad’s place of birth is Alexandria. He’s rip roarin’ working at LyondellBasell in Lake Charles in Industrial Instrumentation. She rides by his side, keeping the home fires burning as wife and mother. Their daughter Carlie, now 19, grew Mardi Gras 2014
from under the starry skies, where Chad serenaded his sweetheart Earline for 21 years. The Stapleton family also includes Dakota and Sassy, who treed their owners. Two shots or three? Representing Duchess Belle Starr and Duke Jesse James were Ginger (Gelner) and Carl J. Monceaux. Their outlaw days began in Welsh for him and Gonzales for her. These desperados drifted to Vinton where they exchanged golden rings five years ago. Both these gangsters graduated from Vinton High, with Bandit Queen attending DSB Cosmetology and Carl attending ABC Trade School for four years. Their brood consist of Mason 24, Jacinda 20, Alison 19, Jade 13, and their shepherd Arias. Ginger rustles business at Envisions, LLC and Carl is employed with Turner Industries. Together, this band of outlaws continue to forge new adventures. Like two tumbling tumble weeds, King Chaos VIII and Queen Gaea VII were finally revealed. Her

Royal Highness, Queen Gaea VIII Patrice Michon has been married to her King of the Cowboys for 13 years. Now she’s the queen of his brand. She’s a graduate of McNeese State in Sociology, which helps keep her in high society. His Royal Highness, King Chaos VIII John Michon, has been employed as a general manager with Billy Navarre Certified after receiving his BA degree at LSU. King Chaos VIII is a Natchez, Mississippi native and herded his Queen from Mamou, Louisiana. This couple’s kinfolk’s are Megan 21, Emma 11, John Patrick 8, Ella 3 and Romeo the cat. All hailed King Chaos VIII and Queen Gaea VIII as the presentation came to an end for the 2014 Royal Court and the Ball began! Music was provided by Southern DJ Productions. Krewe of Chaos was chartered in February 2005 as a social organization with the sole purpose of bringing together family and friends to celebrate the merriment of fellowship year round.

The Krewe de Charlie Sioux was sanctioned by the state of Louisiana in 1997. That same year, Lake Charles and Sioux City officially became Sister Cities at a twinning ceremony in Lake Charles. Members consist of Sioux City, Iowa and Lake Charles residents. Each city has its own Krewe president and Ball Captain. Sioux City members come to Lake Charles for Mardi Gras and Lake Charles members travel to Sioux City the week of July Fourth, bringing Mardi Gras to Siouxland in the form of a gala, parade and Zydeco concert. The purpose of the Krewe is to promote Mardi Gras and share cultural experiences as well as develop tourism in each city. This Mardi Gras season completes the 19th year that Krewe members have traveled back and forth between the two cities, and the 16th year of presentation of a King, Queen and Court. This year, King Charles XVI, George Jacobson and Queen Siouxland XVI, Shannon McSwain reigned over “The Myth Adventures of Charlie Sioux� festivities in Sioux City. Krewe De Classique celebrated their 27th Annual Ball on Saturday, January 25 at the Habibi Temple. This year’s theme was “Classique Salutes Superheroes.” As is customary, the ball opened with the presentation of colors by WMHS Jr. ROTC and the national anthem was sung by Cynthia Williams. Mistresses of Ceremonies were Carol Collins and Jackie Semien. The krewe then presented their debutantes for the evening: Kiana Champagne Ridley and Nia Coleman. Representing the first male and female African American Superheroes were Captain Frederick Rideaux as “The Falcon” and Consort Nellie Rideaux as “Storm.” They have served as captain and consort for five years and celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with the krewe. They have two children and one granddaughter. Krewe De Classique is proud to say all of their members participate in the presentation as skit members or behind-the-scene helpers. The first group of members represented superheroes and villains of “The X-Men” followed by Betty Simon, the Duchess of X-Men. Betty is a lifelong resident of Lake Charles. She has four sons and six grandchildren and is a member of St. Henry Catholic Church. Betty retired from Cintas and is currently employed by Calcasieu Parish School Transportation. Captain America then led “The Avengers” in a dance skit followed by the presentation of Del Black as Duchess of The Avengers. Del is the proud mother of two and a member of Christian Baptist Church. She is employed as a registrar with Charter Schools USA. She is an active member of the krewe and enjoys the opportunity to let her hair down! A choreographed fight between superheroes and villains of the “Justice League” proceeded the presentation of Bertha Coleman as Duchess of The Justice League. Bertha is a lifelong resident of Lake Charles and has three children and seven grandchildren. A retiree of the Pathology Lab and Sacred Heart School, she is an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and participates in many church and social organizations. Bertha and her family dedicated her serving on court to her late husband, James A. Coleman, Sr. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of King and Queen Classique XXVII, Danny and Joanna Guillory. The King and Queen are natives of Lake Charles and reside in Moss Bluff. They have two sons, five grandchildren and two bonus daughters. They are members of St. Theodore Catholic Church. King Danny is a 36-year employee of Entergy Gulf States and Joanna has been employed for 21 years with the Calcasieu Parish School Board and currently teaches at Oak Park Elementary School. Their sons, Danny Jr. and Cory Guillory along with DaShawn Bellow and Kimberly Guillory served as their attendants. The finale included the introduction of all krewe members as they danced down a “soul train” line, which was followed by the Second Line. Mardi Gras 2014
The Krewe of Cosmos celebrated its 64th annual Mardi Gras pageant on Saturday, March 1 in the Sulphur High School auditorium. The krewe is the oldest in Calcasieu Parish and has opened its pageant free to the public since it was founded in 1951. This year’s theme was Cosmos Presents Broadway Musicals. The pageant began with the presentation of colors by the Boy Scouts of Troop 83, followed by the National Anthem sung by krewe member Joe Castro. The Merry Makers came out to greet the crowd with music and beads, followed by the presentation of the krewe officers: President-Mary Jo Bayles, Vice President-Jill Lockhart, Treasurer-Henrietta Akers, and Secretary-Mary Little. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Mike Field. Next was the presentation of the night’s royalty. The Captain of Cosmos led everyone on a stroll down 42nd Street to relive magical Broadway musicals. The Duke and Duchess of the Broadway Musical Oklahoma were Duke Thomas Bourgeois and Duchess Kathy Bourgeois. Duke Thomas is a lifelong resident of Sulphur. A graduate of Sulphur High School, he attended Louisiana Tech University and has been employed at PPG Industries as a production operator for 28 years. Duchess Kathy was born in Sulphur, but graduated from Northview High School in Dothan, Alabama. She graduated from McNeese State University with a BS in Accounting and is the CEO at Access of Louisiana Federal Credit Union, where she has worked for 15 years. They have been krewe members for five years and are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They are the parents of Natasha (37), Trey (26), Ryan (30), Daniel (21) and Wayne (14). Next came the Duke and Duchess of the Broadway Musical Annie Get Your Gun, Duke Garrett Lockhart and Duchess Krystal Bourgeois. Duke Garrett was born in Lafayette and is a 2007 graduate of Sulphur High School. He is currently attending McNeese and will graduate in May. The owner and operator of GL Cutting Horses, he has been in the krewe for two years and attends Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church. Duchess Krystal was born in Sulphur and is a 2006 graduate of Sulphur High School. She also graduated from McNeese State University with a BS degree in Nursing. She has been in the krewe for 3 years and has served on phone committee, jestering and pages. She attends Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Duke and Duchess of the Broadway Musical Annie were Duke Elliot Prine and Duchess Adee Prine. Duke Elliott is a native of Greenville, Mississippi. He graduated from Forest High School in 2003 and has been employed by M. G. Dyess as a pipeline welder for 10 years. He has been a krewe member for three years. Duchess Adee was born in New Iberia and is a 1999 graduate of Sulphur High School. She graduated from LSU with a degree in General Studies and earned a Masters Degree in Education from McNeese. For the past four years, she has been a domestic engineer on the Prine Ponderosa. Adee has been a Krewe member for 12 years. The couple has four children, Breck (6), Blasé (2), and one-year-old twin boys, Baron and Brant. They attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oak Grove. Duchess Laken was born in Sulphur and graduated from Westlake High School in 2003. She is employed by Calcasieu Parish School Board at W. W. Lewis Middle School and attends McNeese State University. The couple attends St. Theresa Catholic Church. They have been members of the krewe for three years, and have three children, Aidan (10), Tristan (7) and Kaicen (5). It was now time to reveal the 2014 Captain of Krewe of Cosmos, Jill Lockhart. A lifelong resident of Sulphur, Jill graduated from Sulphur High in 1979. She received her Bachelor’s degree from LSU in 1983 and earned a Master’s degree in School Counseling in 1990 and a Plus 30 in 1994. She has been is employed by Calcasieu Parish School Board for 25 years and has been a counselor at Sulphur High for the past 16 years. Jill has one son, Garrett, who is on Court this year as Duke Frank Butler. Jill is an active member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. Captain Jill has been an dynamic member of the krewe for 20 years. She was a Duchess on the 1997 Court and has served as Treasurer (4 years), Vice President (1 year), and President (3 years). Her past chairmanships include Pageant Decorations, Jesters, Historian, Telephone, Duke and Duchesses and Nominating and she has been a Jester for 19 years. She has worked on Ball decorations and opened the auditorium for all Jester practices since 1999. It was now time to introduce the Phantom of Opera Royalty: The 2014 King of Krewe of Cosmos, King Erik Gaston de Leroux, Troy Patin and the 2014 Queen of Krewe of Cosmos, Queen Christine Zula Bowes Daae’, Shannon Patin. King Erik “Troy” is a native of Orange, Texas and a 1988 graduate of Vinton High School. He attended Alvin Community College and is an operator at WR Grace. His hobbies are hunting and watching the kids play softball. He is a member of Knights of Columbus, and is a Faith and Food Volunteer. He is also involved in Operation Gratitude and assists with the WW Lewis Softball Program. Queen Christine “Shannon” is a native of Sanford North Carolina, a 1989 graduate of Vinton High School and a graduate of McNeese University. She is employed at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. She enjoys crafting, embroidery, and going to the ballpark to watch--you guessed it--softball. The Queen is active in MS Youth Mentoring, The Fresh Air Tutor Program, Blankets of Love and The Grace Institute. They have 3 children, Laken (20), Caitlen (18) and Colben (15). They attend St. Theresa Catholic Church, and together have run the LCC Kids Shuttle Service for over 20 years. Krewe members for eight years, they have chaired Jesters, Ball Decorations, Adult Pages, Pageant Decorations, Krewe Merchandise, The Krewe Trip and the Brochure. They have also handled the Membership Party and the Telephone Committee. They were on the Cosmos Cosmic Court and King Erik is always a walker. After the presentation, the Jesters, dressed in costumes representing The Jersey Boys, The Angels and the cast of Hairspray came out to entertain the crowd and performed to hits from the Broadway musicals Jersey Boys and Hairspray. Krewe Déjà Vu du Monde held their 25th Annual Ball on February 1 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The theme was The Fellowship of the Ring and a fabulous night it was! Master of Ceremonies Gayle Marshall presented the hard-working board of directors: President Tom Price, Vice President Julie Babineaux, Secretary/Treasurer Lauren de Albuquerque and Krewe Reps Katherine Petty and Gayle Cline. The Royal Court of 2013, King and Queen XXIV Terry and Tina Thibodeaux and Duchesses Cindy Price and Lauren de Albuquerque and Duke George Jacobson made their final promenade. And then the fun started! Captain Phil de Albuquerque came running out as the cutest Hobbit you’ve ever seen with his pointed ears and hairy feet! Captain Phil was born and raised in Michigan, graduated from Michigan State University with an engineering degree, and then ran off and became a Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus clown! He and his wife Lauren moved to Lake Charles ten years ago from Boston and are the publishers of The Jambalaya News. Phil also owns Chateau du Calcasieu Event Center and is a contractor at Fort Polk. He is the president of the Children’s Museum board, is a board member

for the Family and Youth Council and is a member of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles. He and his wife were King and Queen of Déjà vu du Monde in 2008. They are also members of Krewe de la Famille and were King and Queen in 2010. Since Phil is always out and about and clowning around, you can find him hosting “What’s Happening Lake Charles!” on Fox-29 every Thursday. Krewe Mascot Julie Lynette Babineaux followed as the sexy Nymph of the Woods. Julie is the Krewe VP and is the daughter of Sigmund and Yvonne Babineaux of Oberlin. Her son, A1C Justin Kyle Chatman, is stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois and recently married his lovely bride, Senita. Julie is employed by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and attends Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Next, Krewe Lieutenant Dr. Bruce Maerhofer came out as the Orc! Bruce hails from New York State and attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He and his wife Monika came to the Pelican State 23 years ago. A licensed chiropractor, he retired last year. He is a member of the Buccaneers and the Parrot Heads, and he and his wife Monica were King and Queen of the Krewe Déjà vu Du Monde in 2005. They are also members of Krewe de La Famille and are currently Duke and Duchess of that krewe. Krewe debutantes were Summer Marie Folds and Meredith Gill. Summer, the daughter of Scott and Rhonda Folds, is a 2013 honors graduate of Westlake High School where she was a member of Student Council, Beta Club, the Lady Rams volleyball team and was the feature twirler for the Rams band. She is currently in her second semester at LSU where she is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She enjoys snowboarding, scuba diving and traveling. She was escorted by her father, Scott Folds. Meredith is the daughter of Bryan and Jennifer Gill. She attended St. Louis Catholic High School where she earned a merit scholarship and was active in 4-H, art, and soccer. She is currently working on her nurse practitioner degree at SOWELA. She enjoys fine arts, water sports, reading, and traveling. She was escorted by her father, Bryan Forrest Gill, Jr. Rex and Dina Royer were the Duke and Duchess of the Elves.

Duke Rex was born in DeQuincy, attended DeQuincy High School and graduated from Northwestern State University Natchitoches in the RN program. He worked in Natchitoches ICU and then went on to CHRISTUS St. Patrick’s Hospital where he met his wife Dina. He is now a consultant for Beacon Partners where he is a senior project manager, reshaping hospital computer systems. Born in Lacassine, Duchess Dina graduated with honors from Lacassine High School. She went on to LSU-Eunice and graduated with honors in Respiratory Therapy. After working at CHRISTUS St. Patrick hospital, she worked at the Sleep Disorder Center of Louisiana where she became a Registered Polysomnographer Technologist and opened their CPAP business. She is now employed by Taylor Home Health Supply as their respiratory therapist and sales representative. The Royers have three children, Kyrie, Landon and Wesley and two grandchildren, Leigha Britt and Mason Royer. They enjoy their family and friends and love to travel around the world and live life to the fullest! Larry and Carole Williamson were the Duke and Duchess of Wizards. Duke Larry was born in Tallulah, Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. He served in the US Navy and is a Vietnam Veteran. He is employed by Department of the Interior and is looking forward to his retirement at the end of the year. Larry loves shooting his black powder gun, shooting the cannons at Contraband Days and creating his famous elixir, “Moss Bluff Orange Juice.” Duchess Carole was born in Canandaigua, New York. She has a degree in Home Economics/Psychology from Louisiana Tech. She and Larry met in college and have been married for 43 years. They have three children: Shawn and his wife, Susan; Shannon and her husband Eric; and Scott and his wife Bethany. They also have five grandchildren: Logan, Tyler, Alexander, Victoria and Duncan. Carole is a Bronze Life Master in Duplicate Bridge and a lap swimmer who has completed 1,000 miles. Vu du Monde. Originally from Baltimore, they moved to the Lake Area in 2003. King Mike is a semi-retired chemical engineer, having worked for 25 years with Sasol North America. He is currently a consultant with Roddey Engineering Services. Mike is also the author of “The Dang Yankee” column, which has appeared in The Jambalaya News since 2009 and also runs in two other Louisiana newspapers. He is a member of the St. Theodore Council K of C and the Lake Charles Toastmasters Club. He enjoys public speaking, guitar, and stock investing. Queen Susan is a substitute elementary school teacher for Calcasieu Parish and is the owner of Susan’s Pet Sitting Services. She does volunteer work for Southern Care Hospice and CASA, and is a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Calcasieu Boat Club, and the Lake Charles Newcomers Club. She practices American Tribal Style dance with the International Dance Company. Together, King Mike and Queen Susan are also members of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, the Pelican Coast Parrot Heads, and the Krewe de la Famille. They enjoy traveling together and have two children—Jessica and Owen. After a stirring performance of River Dance from the Ashworth School of Performing Arts, the Krewe partied to “The Issue” from Baton Rouge. Krewe de l’Ecore held its 16th annual Mardi Gras Ball on Friday, February 21, at Habibi Temple in Lake Charles. The krewe’s theme for the evening was “TV Land.” Clay Rougeau served as Master of Ceremonies and also provided the entertainment. Photography was by Rod Rodriquez. The celebrations began with the Grand Duchess of TV Land, Vickie Huber, representing the theme of the Court as I Love Lucy. The Grand Duchess resides in Moss Bluff with her husband of 21 years, Todd Huber. The couple has four children, Jerica, Daulton, Coye, and Kyle, and two grandchildren, Dax and Savanna. The Grand Duchess is the owner of Rhinestone Runway, and is a member of Living Way Church. Joe and Laura Ellis appeared as The Duke and Duchess of I Dream of Jeanie. They live in Moss Bluff, have been married for one year and have one child, Addison. Duke Joe is an instrument tech with Turner Industries and Duchess Laura is the assistant manager at Rhinestone Runway Cory and Anna Barkman reigned as King Gomez Addams and his Queen Morticia, representing The Addams Family. The King and Queen reside in Lake Charles, and have been married six years. King Cory is a project manager at Leevac Shipyard Lake Charles and Queen Anna is the owner of M & D. Last year, La Krewe Des Gens Extraordinaire’s theme was “The Good, The Badd, And The Extraordinaire” with King Earl Williams and Queen Robin King-Williams. This year, the krewe presented “Dancing with the Stars” where the Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, and the Rumba were sashayed across the mirrored ballroom dance floor. The 2014 Royal Court was led by President Herman Joseph and Ball Captain Sybil Irving. The 2014 Royal Court consisted of Duke and Duchess of the Tango, Rellis and Johnnie Bell Chavis; Duchess of the Salsa, Charlotte Jones escorted by Eric Ector; Duke and Duchess of the Cha Cha, Jonathan Cook and Tammey Thierry; and 2014 King and Queen of Dancing With the Stars, Michael Fontenot and Brandi Nixon. The Royal Toast and Promenade preceded a night of second lines and royal pageantry. Krewe members and guests danced the night away to the sounds of Hotline, a live band from Opelousas. The night was filled with fun people, good music, Creole food and Mardi Gras merriment. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler! La Krewe Des Gens Extraordinaire was founded in 1995 and is composed of 42 extraordinary people from all walks of life, all dedicated to the festive Mardi Gras celebration. This Krewe of Extraordinary People has made a commitment to foster and promote this joyous celebration by participating in all Mardi Gras activities in Southwest Louisiana. La Krewe Des Gens Extraordinaire is in its 19th year and looks forward to a continuous Mardi Gras merriment in the spirit of Mardi Gras.

Krewe de La Famille celebrated its 35th Annual Ball on Saturday, February 22 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The theme was Famille’s “Gods of Rome” featuring songs, skits, and costumes that evoke the beauty and grandeur of Ancient Rome. Dale Mann served as Master of Ceremonies, with Anne Monlezun directing the evening’s presentation. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, Chennault Division, posted the colors. Haleigh Anne Pickett sang the National Anthem and music was provided by Johnny Earthquake and the Moondogs. The President’s Award was presented to Dr. Cliffe and Mrs. Mickey Laborde for their outstanding krewe participation. The 2013 Famille “Under the Big Top” Royal Court, King and Queen Famille XXXIV Gene and Thelma Fontenot, Dukes and Duchesses Brian and Kitty Johnson, and Dr. John and Staci Young Van Hoose were invited for their last promenade. Famille’s beautiful debutantes Kortney Rose Broussard, Catherine Louise Laborde, Sarah Catherine Laborde, Paige McNeely, Haleigh Anne Pickett, and Brenna Paige Young were presented by their escorts. Famille’s brave Gladiators, Captains Johnny “JJ” Johnson and Brigitte Johnson made their entrance as they pitched battle and conquered the Roman Coliseum floor together. The 2014 Krewe’s King and Queen Famille XXXV were Michael and Natalie Lester Hayes. Michael was born in Port Arthur
Texas to Mr. and Mrs. William Bragg Hayes. He graduated with a BS in Environmental Sciences from Lamar University in Beaumont. Mike is the Public Affairs Manager for the Sasol Megaprojects and will be the Rotary District 6200 Governor in 2015 – 2016. Queen Natalie Hayes is the daughter of Thomas and Sherry Savoy Lester. A graduate of Lamar University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Natalie is a semiretired project manager from the DuPont Sabine River works. The King and Queen joined the Krewe in 2010, sponsored by Jody and the late Dr. James Reed. Mike and Natalie have three children, Mrs. Evan Gray and husband Jeremy, Mrs. Ashley Clark and husband Chris, and Brian Hayes. They have five grandsons, Jacob, Tyler, Lane, Adrian and Colin and two granddaughters, Emma and Brooklyn. The King and Queen are members of St. John Bosco Church in Westlake. Their Majesties’ attendants were Masters Tyler Thomas Ernst and Lane Michael Ernst, grandchildren of the King and Queen. Princesses were Misses Amber Louella Lester, niece of the King and Queen; and Emma Renee Gray, granddaughter of the King and Queen. Representing the Duke of the Sun God and the Duchess of Timeless Beauty were Bruce and Monika Maerhofer. Bruce is a native of Oneida, New York. Now retired, Bruce graduated from University of Missouri, Kansas City, and the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri with a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine degree. Bruce completed tours of duty in Germany and Vietnam as a member of the US Army. Monika is a native of Frankfurt, Mardi Gras 2014
Germany. A former beauty queen, she worked for LTU International German Charter Airlines and for Manhattan and JFK International Airport. Monika retired in March 2013. Bruce and Monika are parents to four children; Annette, Stephanie, Stacy, and Thomas. They are also members of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, the Pelican Coast Parrotheads, and Krewe Déjà’ vu Du Monde. Representing the Duke of the Thunderbolt and the Duchess of Matrimony were Carlos and Darlene Torres. Duke Carlos is the son of retired Master Sergeant Carlos Torres and Christina Torres. Born in Seville, Spain, Carlos completed studies at the United State Military Academy in West Point, New York and completed a B.S. in Aviation at Thomas Edison Community College in New Jersey. He is a retired FAA Air Traffic Controller. A supervisor for Cubic Corporation, he trains military personnel at FT. Polk. A native of San Antonio, Duchess Darlene is a Program/Management Analyst for Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk. She also trained at the Army Management Staff College. The Duke and Duchess are members of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Deridder. Representing the Duke of the Deep Blue Sea and the Duchess of the Moon are Michael and Charln Stewart. Charln Jeanise Stewart is the daughter of Charles and the late Barbara Jeanise of Many. She graduated with a BS from Northwestern State of Natchitoches, and a MS from McNeese State, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional. She is the Principal Industrial Hygienist at LyondellBasell in Houston. The Duke and Duchess will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary later this year. Representing the Duke of Time and the Duchess of the Harvest were Kyle and Dana Hebert. Dr. Kyle James Hebert is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a graduate of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. The son of Rodney and Kathie Hebert, he is the owner of Southern Equine Sports Medicine. A native of Lafayette, Dr. Hebert is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of equine Practitioners, and the Christian Veterinary Missions. Duchess Dana Harper Hebert is the daughter of Arthur Harper and Bobbie Humphery. A native of Dry Creek, Dana graduated magna cum laude from McNeese State University with a BS. She is now the owner of eDATA pro, an environmental consulting firm. She enjoys family and football. Dana and Kyle are parents to Kristopher Harper who is married to
Libby; Lanham Hebert, Harrison Hebert, and Kara Hebert. Dana and Kyle are members of Trinity Baptist Church. The royal entertainment was provided by Carrington Doyle. The Krewe of Good Times held its 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Ball on Feb. 15 at the Isle of Capri Ballroom. “Decades of Good Times” was this year’s theme. Attendees made their grand entrance through a “time warp” where they were taken back through each of the past eras from the 1920s 1990s. Upon entering the ballroom, the stage was set with a
silhouette from each of the past eras. The VIP section was decorated with a 1980s’ theme only, which was the King and Queen’s decade of choice. The Good Times Royal Court Presentation got underway with the Captain rapping to the tune of “Ice, Ice Baby.” Next, Madonna was in the house performing to “Like a Virgin” followed by some ‘60s hippies groovin’ to “Wooly Bully” and Elvis and Marilyn dancing to “Hound Dog.” All the while, the guests were com-
ing to the end of their “time warp” through the Decades of Good Times as the entire Royal Court came together to do some “rump shakin’” for the Grand Finale, dancing to numerous 1990s hits. Her future ambitions include attending SOWELA for her general studies and then transferring to McNeese to major in Animal Science and Choir. Next, the Royal Court was presented with their memento from the decade of their choice. 2014 Captain Bernadette LeBlanc, 29 is the daughter of Darrell and Jackie LeBlanc of Sulphur. When Berna isn’t rapping to some ‘90s hit song, she is working as the teller supervisor of the Maplewood Branch at Iberia Bank. Bernadette attends Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church where she lectors and is the coordinator for the Evangelization committee. She enjoys spending time with her 17 nieces and nephews, spoiling them and sending them right back to their parents! She also enjoys dancing, spending time with friends and family, and loves to karaoke (of course, after one or two cocktails!). Bernadette is a founding board member and also serves as a current board member. Neal Perkins and Bridgett Boyer are the Duke & Duchess of 1950s. These two lovebirds and best friends will soon be “official,” making Bridgett Mrs. Neal Perkins! Duke Neal, 39, loves to fish and hunt and has a passion for “chasing tail”--white tail, that is. Angelina College where he studied Electromechanical Technology. He worked for Temple Inland for 14 years, and two years ago, went to work in the Pipeline Inspection Field. Duchess Bridgett, 35, loves to hunt, fish, and shop ‘til she drops, but would much rather have the camper hooked up and be sitting by a nice fire. Together they have three kiddos, Laiken, 17; JT, 14 and Hunter, 11. They also have two fur babies, Louie, 2 and Georgia, 1. Bridgett and the kids spend a lot of time chasing Neal from pipeline to pipeline and wouldn’t change it for anything. Brian and Regina Conner are the Duke & Duchess of 1960s These two “hippie lovers” have been married for 12 years. Together, Brian, 35 and Gina, 34, have two ankle biters. Dylan Joseph is 8 and Hayley Claire is 2. Duke Brian graduated from South Beauregard High in 1996. He currently works for Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor and recently completed training to become a Certified Engineer. Gina graduated from Singer High in 1997 and worked for Nichol’s Pharmacy for six years until the birth of their daughter, Hayley, at which time Gina chose to become a full-time wife, mommy and domestic goddess. The Conners enjoy family time and traveling as well as watching some good ole LSU and NOLA Saints football games. This year’s Royal Couple was finally unmasked as Kevin and Ashley Pharris made their entrance as King and Queen of Good Times II. Her Royal Highness, Queen Ashley Pharris, 38, is the daughter of, Larry
and Wanda LeJeune of Sulphur. Ashley graduated from DeQuincy High in 1993 and went to work in the human resource field. Currently, she is a stay-at-home mom of three children: Cole, 13; Jake, 11 and Gracie, 7. All actively participate in sports programs as well as volunteer in the community. His Royal Highness, King Kevin Pharris, 41, is the son of Skippy and Gloria Pharris of DeQuincy. Kevin loves to hunt and fish. He worked in the oilfield with his family while growing up. He graduated from DeQuincy High in 1989 and worked as an iron worker and welder for a few years before reentering the oilfield. Kevin and Ashley have been a hot item for 17 years and are now running their own oilfield consulting business, which allows more time with their children. They all attend Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur. In their spare time they enjoy camping and watching their boys play sports and their daughter cheer and dance. They are a closeknit family that spends every Sunday after church at Grandma’s house having dinner with family. All applauded King & Queen of Good Times II as the presentation came to an end for the 2014 Royal Court and the ball began! Music was provided by Northside Productions. We hear the horn at the beginning of the popular Mardi Gras song, “The Second Line,” and it summons us like a beacon to grab our umbrella, napkin, handkerchief or fan and fall into line, dancing and strutting to the music as if under happy hypnosis. We can be seen doing it at krewe balls, the Royal Gala, and even on the parade route. It’s what carnival enthusiasts call “second lining.” And like all of our traditions of king cake, parades and beads, Second Lining has an intriguing history in itself. The “second line” is a tradition adopted from a distinguished aspect of New Orleans culture known as the “jazz funeral.” The jazz funeral has an influence that dates back four centuries to the secret societies of the Dahomy Tribes of Benin and the Yoruba Tribes of Nigeria. Theses secret societies assured their fellow West African tribesmen that a proper burial would be performed at the time of their death by pooling their resources to form the first type of insurance. When the tribes became part of the Atlantic slave trade and slaves were brought to America, the idea of proper burials remained strong.
After the Civil War, insurance companies often refused to insure recently freed slaves. Therefore, Africans and African- Americans formed into Benevolent Societies and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs as their traditions merged with Louisiana’s colonial military brass band parade traditions of Europeans and white Americans. As brass bands became popular during the early 18th century, they were called to participate to play processional music for different occasions. After the turn of the 20th century, the African spiritual practices were also heavily influenced by Haitian Voudoo’s idea of celebrating life after death to please spirits who watch over the dead, as well as African-American Protestant and Catholic Church practices. After the 1960s, the tradition was widespread among New Orleanians across ethnic and religious boundaries to become the modern day “jazz funeral “ most commonly done for individuals who were musicians, connected to the music industry, a member of various social aid and pleasure clubs, or carnival krewes who make a point to arrange such funerals for their members. The late jazzman and author of Bourbon Street Black, Danny
Barker said, “The practice of having music during funeral processions was added to the basic African pattern of celebration for most aspects of life, including death.” The procession begins when the family, friends, and brass band march from the home, funeral home, or church to the cemetery. During the march to the gravesite, the band plays slow, somber dirges and hymns. Once the mourners say their final farewells and the deceased is laid to rest, a trumpets call rallies the assembly to help release the deceased soul or “cut the body loose.” The music then becomes more upbeat, starting with a hymn or spiritual number played in a swinging fashion to celebrate the life of the departed. The band, led by the “Grand Marshall” and followed by the family and friends of the deceased, is known as the “first line.” Those who follow just to enjoy the music and join in the parade in celebration are called the “second line.” Traditionally, second line mourners were characterized by accessories necessary for the long procession in the hot, southern sun including fans, handkerchiefs, and parasols or umbrellas. Their style of dancing and walking
and the twirl of the parasol or handkerchief in the air is called “second lining.” Over the course of 50 years, the second line umbrella has become a dominant symbol of celebration, not just for Mardi Gras, but also for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or any occasion worthy of such style of celebration. What was once a necessity against the sun has become a highly decorated work of art. Historic predominately African-American neighborhoods of Treme and Central City of New Orleans are most strongly associated with the traditions and publicize their parade routes online to invite visitors to participate or you can witness it at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. If you are in the area, take advantage of the local culture! And when you go to your next ball and you hear the trumpet call of that old familiar tune, grab your umbrella or napkin to fall in “second line” behind your krewe royalty. Take a moment to reflect on the fact that we continue to participate in a tradition that is over 400 years old. A tradition that celebrates life and independent freedoms. Krewe du Grande Bois held its 34th Annual Ball and Pageant on Friday, February 28 at the Habibi on Pack Road by visiting The Big Apple – New York City -- Grande Bois style with Master of Ceremonies Perry Comeaux. President Eric Mire welcomed all members and guests to the very colorful evening of fun. 2013 King Dudley Pitre and Queen Becky Pitre made their final round as King and Queen and opened the festivities for the evening. The Captains of Times Square at Rockefeller Center, Dave and Cookie Phillips opened our evening with a countdown of the Mardi Gras Ball and danced to “Putting On the Ritz.” Dave and Cookie have been members of the Krewe for quite a few years. They served on court in 2004 and were King and Queen in 2010. Dave, although retired, continues to remain active with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission and the Lake Charles American Legion. He plays keyboard and sings with a couple of local bands. Cookie stays busy with her watercolor painting business, Cookie’s Cards. She occasionally facilitates religious workshops, classes and luncheons. Cookie is a supporter of her Catholic community of Christ the King and the Theresian ladies. Duchess Caren is a retired hairdresser, and Duke Richard, retired from Basell Petrochemical, is now a maintenance planner for Westlake Chemical. Richard and Caren have been krewe members since 1990, have served on the court twice and were King and Queen in 2007. Richard currently serves as the krewe vice-president. The couple enjoys traveling, 4-wheeling and duck hunting together. Betsy still practices law part time and is on the board of directors of ACTS Theater and counsel to the Southwest Louisiana Master Gardeners. They are both in theater activities as well as the Twelfth Night Revelers and enjoy time with their menagerie of pets. Sam and Denise Hebert, the Duke and Duchess of Chinatown, portrayed that colorful section of New York City by dancing to “China Grove.” Sam and Denise have been a part of the Krewe for many years. They were on court in 2008 and served as King and Queen in 2011. Sam is the owner of Sam Hebert Financial Group and travels the country as a motivational speaker. In 2013, he was named “Outstanding Salesperson” for New York Life in the United States. He is involved with Family & Youth Counseling, CASA, and Greater Lake Charles Rotary Club. Denise has served as vice president and party planner for the Krewe. She’s been on the board of the Lake Charles Racquet Club and is past president of SADE Construction. She is currently serving as fundraiser for the CASA Family & Youth Counseling events. Her hobbies are tennis and photography. She has been Sam’s righthand person in all of their endeavors for
the 34 years of their marriage. Sam and Denise have three children. The 2014 King and Queen of the Big Apple, Dr. Randy and Debbie Perry, entered the room from the “Big Apple” to the music of “Boy from New York City.” They have been on Court in 2007 and were Captains in 2010 and have been very active in the Krewe as decorating chairpersons for several years. As members of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, Queen Debbie enjoys her children’s church ministry. King Randy is a practicing family dentist in Lake Charles where Debbie works alongside him as office manager. They are blessed with four great children, who with their spouses bring them much pride and joy. Their two grandchildren continue this joy as well as the third one arriving soon! Randy loves piloting his private plane, while Debbie, as his co-pilot in life, navigates their way. They also enjoy traveling, boating, fishing, sailing and four wheeling, and spending time with their family and friends. This year they made their first parachute jump to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary. The Captains’ costumes were designed by John Chavanne. The King and Queen and court costumes were designed by Rebecca Bayer. After the presentation of the goblets and Krewe flag and banners, Krewe founder Pat Fontenot made a toast. Beads were then thrown to the crowd as the court made its way around the dance floor. The Ball commenced with music by the Kadillacs.

The Krewe of Illusions kicked off its 25th Annual Mardi Gras Extravaganza “Illusions of Vegas” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1 in the Rosa Hart Theater. This year, Illusions brought to the stage visions of Las Vegas past and present. Illusions King, Queen, and Royal Court paid tribute to the Vegas nightlife with snippets of famous entertainers, showgirl revues, and awe-inspiring events set to the local background of famous casinos past and present. As the ball began, guests were welcomed by music to set the mood. Musical scores were performed by noted Vegas performers, such as Bette Midler, Liberace, Diana Ross, Reba McEntire, and Celine Dion to name a few. After formal announcements and introductions by the Mistresses of Ceremonies Desi Devereaux and Carla Chrisco, the show opened with a small tribute to past Kings, Queens, and court members. The show was dedicated to Bev Jones, recognizing her efforts in helping to start the Krewe of Illusions as a charter member in 1989. The Krewe crest was lowered and set the stage for the Extravaganza. A musical montage of famous Vegas socialites welcomed the audience and set the mood for the 25th Anniversary celebration. Kenny Rogers’ “Gambler” was sung by Bo Benoit. Sonny (Julie Broussard) and Cher (Susan Clark) sang live on stage, he looking rather haggard and she fabulous as always. Marilyn Monroe (Athena Campbell) was presented as the cake topper who performed a lively rendition of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” and sang “Happy Birthday” to her party guests. Illusions King XXIV Dan Carlson and Illusions Queen XXIV Melanie Kershaw both represented the splendor of the famous Vegas nightlife with costumes that lit up with hundreds of tiny twinkling lights. Their backpieces were set off in colors of royal blue, purple, and silver and were banked in feathers of the same colors. Playing cards on the backs showed off winning poker hands. The King wore a regal while tux of tails emblazoned with swirling sequined and jeweled appliqués of royal blue and silver. The designs were set off by hundreds of glittering rhinestones. King Dan is a resident of Lake Charles and is a paramedic working offshore in the Louisiana Gulf. He is also a member of our sister city Krewe of Charlie Sioux. The Queen wore a dramatic floor-length gown of white brocade and feathers. The fitted bodice was covered in hundreds of tiny glittering rhinestones and her peeka-boo cutaway skirt was completely covered in feather plumage and iridescent ting-ting. Queen Melanie is a resident of Lake Charles and is a long-time employee and booth manager of Market Basket on Ryan Street. Royal Entertainment was provided by the LaGrange High School Dance Line, tearing up the stage representing a Las Vegas Revue of feathered showgirls. The musical crooning of Elvis singing “Viva Las Vegas” helped to bring it all to life. The major costumes of the Royal Court represented the magic of many of the Las Vegas casinos, past and present. 44 MARCH 3, 2014

Bob Manuel represented Bally’s Casino, Jubilee Showgirl Revue. His assistants were a group of showgirls fighting for dominance. His magnificent costume was bright royal blue, red, and gold. After seeing a troop of mermaids moving and dancing around on stage, Carolyn Tolbert was straight off the pirate ship in the choppy water at Treasure Island Casino. As she fought to keep her goodies out of the hands of those pesky pirates, her female cohorts distracted them into submission. She wore the pirate colors of red and black. The Rat Pack with your favorite smooth voices of Dean Martin (Terry Newman), Sammy Davis Jr. (Donnie King), and Frank Sinatra (Kevin Hodge) were brought to life for the delight of the audience. Waiting for his moment in the limelight, Brandrick Levy brought the Cirque Du Soleil acrobats to the stage, right off the Vegas strip at the Bellagio Casino. His presentation under blacklight was awesome in colors of lime green, purple, and orange. The Luxor Casino has opened a new Wedding Chapel for the discerning bride to live out her nuptial fantasies. Richelle Spears took the audience on her journey to “tie the knot,” but alas, all did not go as planned, and the crowd met a number of disappointed Vegas brides. After all the bridal drama played out, Spears was stunning in bright green and the colors of the rainbow.

Groups of performers working for their chance to make big bucks on stage are a dime a dozen in Las Vegas, but the Krewe of Illusions trotted out their very own group, in the number “We Got Talent.” The crowd witnessed a group of nuns doing their best to bring some old-fashioned religion to the competition, a fallen star trying to re-establish a longdead career, and a local “Glee” group that brought the house down. While the world-famous Riviera Casino of today faces isolation and bankruptcy in Vegas’ North Strip area, Ball Captain Kevin Hodge recalled the heyday of the Riviera as he brought the most famous of its glitterati performers, Liberace, to the stage in the resplendent fashion for which he was known. His white suit, covered in pearls and rhinestones, was set off by a cape and collar of white fur and glittering orange. The Royal Promenade completed the show with all the members and major costumes brought back to the stage one more time. At the show’s completion, the krewe and their guests moved to the Exhibition Hall where everyone danced to the rocking sounds of Laurel and the Electric Circus. The production was supported by the Krewe of Illusions Board of Directors and all the members who work as performers, dancers, singers, scriptwriters, backstage hands, and technical masters.

The 31st annual Krewe du Lac Mardi Gras Ball, one of the only costume-only balls in Lake Charles, was held on Saturday, February 22, in the Buccaneer Room of the Lake Charles Civic Center. KPLC-TV newscaster Lee Peck returned again this year to perform his duties as Master of Ceremonies. The celebration began with the formal introduction of Captain Colvin LeDoux. Captain LeDoux, who reigned as King Charles du Lac XI, served on the krewe’s board of directors for several years before assuming the role of Captain. A retiree of Conoco, Colvin and his wife, Pam, a retired elementary school principal, enjoy spending time with friends and family, travelling, and working on home projects. They are members of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and Trinity Baptist Church. Captain LeDoux imparted affirmation to the efforts of the current Board of Directors: Chris Guidry, Phyllis Guidry, Claire Hess, John Lafleur, Clarice Lafosse, Cyndi Lejeune, Kevin Miller, Sam Reeves, and Bill Willis. He also acknowledged krewe member Don Menard, who faithfully serves as the webmaster for www.krewedulac.com. Additional thanks went out to board advisors Brenda Wilkinson and Debbie Carlin, who faithfully organize the Royal Court preparation and presentation. Attention was given to King Charles du Lac XXX, Darin Sarver, and Queen Katherine XXX, Missy Bushnell, as they graciously made their last promenade before their krewe members. Duke Andrew XXXI, Mark Shannon Cormie, and his cohort, Duchess Angelica XXXI, Michelle Fuoco, began their first walk as a royal pair. Duke Andrew was born and raised in the Lake Charles area and is the son of the late attorney, Nathan Adam Cormie, Sr. and Addie Barrilleaux Cormie. He and his wife, Lisa Guillory Cormie, are owners of Affordable Wrecker and Towing, which is currently celebrating its 24th year in busi46 MARCH 3, 2014
ness. The Duke, a 1975 graduate of Iowa High School, attended McNeese College, completed the Dale Carnegie course in 1979, and is a registered Louisiana notary. He and his wife, who are of the Christian faith, are members of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, the Pelican Coast Parrotheads Club, and the CEO organization of Lake Charles. A member of the krewe for five years, Duke Andrew enjoys RVing in his motor home, socializing with friends, dancing to Motown, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop music, and tailgating with friends at McNeese football games. Duchess Angelica XXXI, a krewe member since 2005, wore a royal purple ball gown with a full tulle skirt and a sweetheart corset bodice fully encrusted with aurora borealis jewels. The lovely Duchess, a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, is the daughter of Sherburne Joseph (S.J.) and Ginger Gomez of Lake Charles. A 1989 graduate of LaGrange High School, Duchess Angelica earned a Master of Arts in Communication Disorders from the University of Houston. After 11 years as a speech-language pathologist, Duchess Angelica is now a homemaker and a certified fitness instructor. She is an avid runner and yoga student and enjoys travelling, cooking, reading, and spending time with the people she loves. She and her husband, Glenn, have a son John, 5, and are members of Christ the King Catholic Church. She joyously continues her family’s legacy on the Krewe’s Royal Court, following in the footsteps of her mother, Duchess Caroline XVIII, and her father, Duke Andrew XXVIII. The next royal pair to be introduced was Duke Edward XXXI, Ivy James Woods, and Duchess Caroline XXXI, Kellie Jo Benton. Duke Edward, a resident of Lake Arthur, is the son of Donald Woods and the late Tillie Duhon Woods. A 1981 graduate of Lake Arthur High School, Duke Edward received a full football scholarship to McNeese State University and was recently inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Lake Arthur
High. He earned a degree in Ag Business in 1986, but eventually got into law enforcement, working as a road trooper and SWAT team member for Troop D in Lake Charles. He transferred to Lafayette in 2000 to work for the Louisiana State Police Motor Carriers Division. As a result of a 2004 incident, Trooper Ivy Woods, to this day, holds the record for the largest illegal drug currency seizure in the history of Louisiana. Ivy is married the love of his life, Bridget Rene Simon. They have 5 sons: Ian Jude, 25, Isaac Jacob, 21, Ivan Jon, 18, Iryn Joseph “Joe”, 14, and Scotty Bertrand (Rachel) and two granddaughters, Brinkley and Carrley. Of all his accomplishments, Duke Edward especially values the time he has been able to spend with his family and friends. He and his wife are members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur. He enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, supporting the Lake Arthur Tigers, and cheering on the McNeese Cowboys with family and friends. Duchess Caroline XXXI, Kellie Benton, looked stunning in a navy blue strapless gown by Karishma featuring a sweetheart neckline and a fully detailed rhinestone bodice. The daughter of Gervis and Pat Miller, she is a lifelong resident of Sulphur and 1989 graduate of Sulphur High. She has been happily married to Marc Benton for 23 years, and they have three children: Chris, 22, Katie, 19, and Kamryn, 12. The Duchess and her family are members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur, where she taught religious education for three years. For the past 18 years, Kellie has been self-employed as an in-home childcare operator. A Krewe du Lac member for the past four years, Kellie enjoys shopping, going to Zumba classes, and being with family. The Bentons are members of the Pelican Coast Parrotheads Club. The King’s hobbies include Crossfit and attending McNeese football games with his family. King Charles grew up with a passion for soccer and is now able to share that passion with his son and his soccer team, which he has coached for the past four years. Queen Katherine XXXI, Tina Kadlubar Reggie, made her first royal appearance wearing a strapless sweetheart neckline designer gown with hand-beaded precious stones and Swarovski crystals. Queen Katherine is the wife of former King Charles du Lac XXV, Paul Reggie and is the proud mother to Jonah, 12, and Sofia, 10. She graduated from LaGrange Senior High in 1982 and completed her B.S. degree in nursing from McNeese State University. Queen Katherine was employed by Dr. John Cocchiara as RN First Assistant in surgery. In 1998, she completed the Registered Nurse First Assistant Course and started her own business, Surgical Assistants PRN. Tina became a certified operating room nurse and a Cer-

tified Registered Nurse Assistant in 1999, and has been the only Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant in all of Lake Charles for 15 years. She served her local chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses as secretary, treasurer, and board member, and also served as the chapter’s president for three years. She has been a krewe member since 2000. The traditional exchanging of toasts between the new King and Queen and their royal court and subjects took place, followed by Captain LeDoux blowing the official whistle to signal that the party had begun. The Krewe Des Lunatiques celebrated its 26th Mardi Gras Ball in the Contraband Room of the Lake Charles Civic Center on Saturday, February 22. The theme was “Lunatiques Set Sail to the Caribbean.” As krewe members and guests arrived, they climbed aboard the S.S. Lunatiques and were entertained with steel drums, the Caribbean dancers and the beautiful décor by Denise Hite. Chad Austin, Master of Ceremonies, introduced the hard workers of the 2013-2014 board of directors and elected officers including Chairman Mark Bordelon along with Marion Bordelon, Leslie Materne, Tami Blocker, Debbie Lavergne, Mark Lavergne, Angel Mefford, Thomas Mefford, Charlotte Flores, Ashley Bourgeois, Heather Bourgeois, Denise Hite and Melissa Bender. The evening festivities were underway with the sounding of the captain’s whistle. A final farewell was given to King Raphael XXV, Mark Bordelon and Queen Evelyn XXV, Charlotte Flores. The presentation continued with the arrival of Captain Heather Bourgeois accompanied by her daughter Macie Bourgeois to the music “When the Sun Goes Down.” In keeping with the theme, her mantel had beautiful embellished palm trees created by Mark Lavergne. Heather is a resident of Lake Charles and has one daughter, Macie Lynn Bourgeois, 9, who attends St. John Elementary. Heather attended McNeese State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree and a masters in Educational Leadership. She is employed by the Calcasieu Parish School Board and is the curriculum coordinator at F.K. White Middle School. Heather enjoys spending time with her family and traveling to new and exciting places with her daughter. Queen Evelyn XXVI, Allinda Nickerson was presented by her two sons Braxton, 5 and Trevor Marc, 3. Queen Allinda is from Anacoco, but resides in Lake Charles with her very
active sons who love playing ball and riding horses. Allinda has a degree in massage therapy from LA Institute of Massage in Lake Charles and is also a registered EMT- Intermediate from Oklahoma State University. She is employed at Ultimate Experience Tanning Salon and owns her own business, Body and Farm, where she performs human and animal massages specializing in equine massage. Allinda enjoys spending time with her boys, mom and friends and also likes bonfires, dancing, traveling, scuba diving and rodeos. She dedicates her 2014 year to all her family who got her started with Mardi Gras fever at the age of five. The Duchess of the Sea, Gloria Frazee was escorted by her son-inlaw Bill Bruce and granddaughter Annie Bruce, 13, who attends the TELC program at F. K. White Middle School. Duchess Gloria was married to the late Clarence Frazee and has four daughters: Gloria Ann Frazee, Frankie Babineaux, Diana Bourgeois and her husband Kenneth and Cindy Bruce and her husband Bill. She has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Gloria is a retired employee of the Lake Charles Housing Authority where she was the commu-
nity activity director. She enjoys being a member of the Catholic Daughters, playing pokeno, spending time with her family and traveling. The final presentation was the Duchess of White Sandy Beaches Ashley Bourgeois who was escorted by Josh Little. Ashley is a resident of Lake Charles and attended Sowela. She is employed by Stine Lumber Company where she works in the corporate office as a purchasing agent. She enjoys cooking, hanging out with her friends and being a part of the Lunatiques board as the Social Chairman. The Krewe de la Maison de Calcasieu celebrated its 15th Annual Ball by breaking out the popcorn and Twizzlers. “Maison Goes to the Movies” was the theme for this year’s festivities held on Saturday, February 22. The VFW on Country Club Road was prepared for the silver screen with the infamous red curtain and film reels. Guests were greeted by some of the most popular theme songs and soundtracks. Master of Ceremonies John Bridges welcomed guests and members to sit back and relax as the lights were lowered and the presentation began. The Krewe said farewell to the 2013 “Raise Your Glass” Royal Court with the King and Queen of Happy Hour, John and Ellie Stickney, retiring their crowns and taking the seats of royalty for the final time. The Krewe crest was presented by Sarah and Thomas Townsley. The Krewe presented two debutantes this season. Miss Katie Hood of Sulphur was escorted by her father. Katie is the daughter of Chris and Laurie Fontenot. She is a senior at Sam Houston High School and a member of the Sam Houston softball team—the winner of three state championships! After graduation, Katie will be attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe to major in prepharmacy. The second debutante was Miss Mason Lyon from Lake Charles. Mason, escorted by her father Ted Lyon is the granddaughter of krewe members Rhonda Sullivan and Ron Williams. Mason is a senior at Barbe High School and spends her afternoons as an afterschool teacher at Immaculate

Conception Catholic School. Upon graduation, Mason will attend McNeese State University in the fall of 2014. Both debutantes were presented with sashes and roses from member Laurie Fontenot. As the spotlight searched the set, it found the Director (Captain) dressed in a nostalgic director’s costume decorated in rhinestones and crystal stars and reels and trimmed in gold and silver. The Captain’s mantle displayed a large Oscar statue flanked by both a Golden Globe and an Emmy. The stars that suspended from the top of the mantle seemed to dance in the spotlight. As the masked Director turned to leave, spectators caught a sight of beautiful red, silver and gold feathers as a representation of the red carpet, the silver screen, and Hollywood’s prestigious awards. In Maison tradition, the captain’s true identity was revealed at the end of the presentation. Chosen to be Captain of the 2014 Mardi Gras season was one of the Krewe’s charter members, Debbie Brade. Debbie and husband Don planted roots in Louisiana soil for 25 years before a recent move to Texas. Debbie is an RN case manager for Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands. Debbie and Don have a daughter, Kristin, who resides in Houston. Debbie has been completely involved in the Krewe since its creation in 1999, serving as president in 2009 and Queen of “Festivals of Calcasieu” in 2005. With some of the greatest movies in mind, the Krewe presented the Duchess of Gatsby Manor, Christy LePretre. Christy appeared in a long gold gown reminiscent of the 1920s era. Her cos-

tume was adorned with a black mantle decorated with black feathers and sparkling with rhinestones and crystals. Christy is a resident of Vinton and has been a member of the Krewe since 2012. She is an active assistant on the ball committee and designed the picture backdrop the evening festivities. Christy is a beverage server at Coushatta Casino and Resort. She has two children, Jeren, 19 and Kodi-Rae, 12. Continuing the evening of great movies, the Krewe presented the Duke and Duchess of Tara, Ron Williams and Rhonda Sullivan. Representing Gone With the Wind, Ron and Rhonda brought the audience back to the days of Southern ways. Duke Ron wore a costume that replicated the waistcoat and hat similar to what Rhett Butler wore. Duchess Rhonda wore a green gown trimmed in gold much like the drapes of Scarlett’s most daring dress. Rhonda’s mantle was the same green fabric adorned with green feathers. Ron and Rhonda reside in Lake Charles. Ron has been a member of the Krewe since 2012. He retired from the US Air Force after 27 years and now is the executive director of the USS Orleck Naval Museum. Ron has one son, Ronald Williams, who lives in Iowa. Rhonda has been a member of the Krewe since 2000, serving as the Krewe’s community service chairperson for many years. She is retired from the US Army Nurse Corps and from Moss Regional Medical Center where she worked as an operating room

nurse. Rhonda has three children, Sara, James, and Tommy, and two grandchildren, Mason and Alyssa. As the spotlights searched the set once again, the King and Queen of the Silver Screen appeared dressed in white with sparkling silver accents. The king wore a top hat from the days of old Hollywood and his tuxedo was also adorned in silver. Greeting members and guests for the first time as King Charles XIV and Queen Catherine XIV were Marty and Sharon Thompson of Lake Charles. Marty and Sharon have been members of the Krewe since 2000. The Krewe and Mardi Gras are forever linked to the King and Queen’s personal history. Their first date, in 1999, was the Krewe’s Inaugural Ball and they were married in a small ceremony held before the ball in 2000. The couple served on the 2013 Raise Your Glass court as the Duke and Duchess of Champagne. Marty and Sharon have four children, Michael, John, Julia, and Maura and eight grandchildren. Marty is employed by Northrop Grumman and
Sharon has the busy task of taking care of the King and the family. Marty is currently serving as Director of Communication for the Krewe. After the newly crowned King and Queen took their first walk, the Royal Court and crowd were entertained by the famous Men of Maison Dancers performing their Super Hero rendition of “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” The presentation ended with a traditional Captain’s toast and a Second Line parade with the Royal Court in the lead. Then, the Ball began and members and guests danced the night away to the sounds provided by Boomerang.

Krewe du Malicieux celebrated their Inaugural Ball on February 22 at the Post Oak Pavilion. The theme was “A Night at the Moulin Rouge.” Krewe Captain Rob Ardoin was introduced and kicked off the celebration with the Board of Directors: President Travis McNabb, Treasurer Kelly Bridges, Ball Director Kerri McNabb and Secretary Dayna Ardoin. Representing the Duke and Duchess of Burlesque were Eric Malone and Ashlyn Watkins. Duchess Ashlyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Watkins Sr. of Welsh. She is a graduate of Welsh High School and McNeese State University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She is a teacher at Welsh-Roanoke Junior High School. Her hobbies include attending church, hunting, fishing, running, and spending time with her family and friends. Duke Eric is the owner and operator of CTI Security Solutions established in Lake Charles in 2011. A graduate of Alfred M. Barbe High School, he enjoys hunting, fishing, world traveling, and rock climbing. He also DJ’s in his spare time for friends and family and supports several local charities. Representing the Duke and Duchess of Cabaret were John and Valerie Louviere. Duke John is an offshore mechanic with Woodgroup Incorporated and has been working in the oilfield for the past 10 years. He is supported at home by his wife of 15 years, Valerie, as well as their children, Ashley (21), Nicholas (13), and Alexander (9). His many hobbies include fishing, hunting, and woodworking. Duchess Valerie is a local real estate agent with Rhino Real Estate. She is very active in her community and serves on numerous boards that include SWLA Realtors Association Programs/Public Relations Committee, Boy Scouts Troop/Pack Committee Chairperson, Guiding Light Ministries board member, Missions Teacher and Operation Hope Board Member.

Her Royal Highness, Queen Alexia Jennifer Robertson Strickland, has been an R.N., in the field of occupational health at CITGO Petroleum Corporation Refinery for seven years. She graduated from the University of Mobile and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She’s been happily married to her King for 11 years and they reside in Moss Bluff. His Royal Highness, King Magnus Alvin C. Strickland Jr., has been an employee of CITGO Petroleum Corporation Refinery for six years. A graduate of Gulfport High School and SOWELA Community College, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. He is the loving father to their little Prince, Adam, and enjoys every moment spent with his son and his Queen. “Sportsman’s Paradise” was the theme of Krewe of the Marsh’s fifth annual Mardi Gras Ball, held Saturday, February 8 at the V.F.W. Post 2130 in Lake Charles. The hall was transformed into a marsh scene with crawfish boils, crab traps, shrimp boats, fishing poles, duck decoys and deer stands and decorated with the cat tails, wild purple irises and lily pads that outline the bayous and canals of beautiful marsh areas. There were sounds of gunshots in the early hours – the many duck hunters wanting to reach their duck limits for the day. Master of Ceremonies Aaron Ladd welcomed guests and krewe members. Krewe du Masque celebrated their 16th Annual Carnival Season on Saturday, February 22. The theme was Mardi Gras Goes Back to the 80’s. “Neon” Captain, Jessica Crochet began the celebration. King Etienne 16th and Queen Andrianne 16th were Billy Dunn and Rachelle Dunn. “Baby” and Johnny from Dirty Dancing, Kevin and Pam Gautreaux, attended them. Duke and Duchess Ren and Ariel from Footloose are Keith and Angie Dupuis. The Krewe du Masque is a family-oriented krewe and participates in the Children’s Parade and the Krewe of Krewe’s Parade.

The Krewe of Mischief held its inaugural ball on February 21 at VFW Post 8107 in Sulphur. The theme was “Greek Gods and Goddesses”. In typical Mischief fashion, costumes ranged from the regal traditional characters of mythology to the more dubious creations that may have raised the eyebrows of the Greek personalities they portrayed. Grecian columns and lush greenery graced the seating area of the hall while shimmering draperies adorned the ceiling and walls. To kick off the evening Krewe Captain Vance Burum welcomed members and guests and the Royal Court was announced. Narrowly escaping the Sirens of the Sea were Duke of Mischief David Dupont and Duchess of Mischief Cassie Dupont. David and Cassie have been married for 18 years and reside in Iowa. They are proud parents of two children, Jordan and Jaret. Duke David is a graduate of South Cameron High School and McNeese State University. He is employed at Agrielectric Co. His hobbies include hunting, fishing and rodeo. Duchess Cassie is a graduate of Sam Houston High School and works for the Calcasieu Parish School Board. She enjoys traveling, shopping, and hanging out with friends and family. Faithfully guarding the contents of Pandora’s box were Duke of Mischief Chad Yellott and Duchess of Mischief Britta Savoie. Duke Chad is a Sulphur High School alumni and has been employed at R & R Construction for six years. He currently serves as the president of Whitetails Unlimited. Chad enjoys cooking, hunting and fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Duchess Britta graduated from Sulphur High School in 2009 and went on to Sowela Technical Community College, where she received her accounting degree. Britta is employed at Southwest Beverage Company, Inc. She enjoys shopping, bonfires, reading and spending time with family and friends. Following the flashing lightning storm of the mighty King Zeus, we witnessed the long awaited arrival of the King of Mischief, Cliff Cocoran and Queen of Mischief Bobbie Corcoran. The King and Queen are residents of Sulphur and are the proud parents of three young men: Jamie Corcoran of Shreveport, Brett Houston of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Steven Houston of Sulphur. They are also the proud grandparents of Kaleb Corcoran, 2. King Cliff retired from the Air Force in 2006 and is still supporting our military maintaining the KC10 Refueling aircraft at the maintenance facility here in Lake Charles. His hobbies include boating, playing pool in his man cave and spending time with his friends. Queen Bobbie is from Florida and works alongside Cliff supporting our military as well. Her hobbies include cooking for friends and family, traveling and collecting unique sea shells. The Krewe of Mischief founders, Vance and Tanya Burum, Mike and Melissa Richard, Celina Wilburn and Mike Lebleu toasted the first Royal Court. Krewe de la Noblesse held its 29th Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, February 8 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Noblesse de la Louisiane,” the Coliseum was transformed to symbolize the way of life in our state both past and present with its log cabins, Southern mansions, oil derricks and carriages. The script for the presentation was written by krewe member Kristine Lyons and the presentation director was krewe member John Richards. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Dale Mann. The presentation began with the posting of colors by the LaGrange Navy Junior ROTC and the singing of the National Anthem. The 2013-2014 Board was introduced: Mrs. Valerie Norwood, President, escorted by her husband Kenneth Norwood; Mr. Doug Talley, First Vice President, escorted by his wife Paulette Talley; Mrs. Leah Brame, Second Vice President, escorted by her husband Tommy Brame; Mrs. Brenda Cimini, Secretary, escorted by her husband Joe Cimini; Mr. Bill McCurley, Treasurer, escorted by his wife, Virginia McCurley; and Mrs. Polly Richards, Krewe Representative, escorted by her husband John Richards. The Royal Court for the 28th Ball “Noblesse’s Mystique of Camelot” was introduced: King Gabriel Noblesse the XXVIII, Mr. Kyle Doise and Queen Ashley Noblesse the XXVIII, Ms. Dawn Christine Humphrey Cole; and the Dukes and Duchesses, comprised of Sir Galahad and the Lady of the Lake, Duke Donnie Courvelle and Duchess Lottie Rice Courvelle; and Sir Gawain and Lady Morgan Le Fay, Duke Abe Tabanjah and Duchess Amy Veuleman. Next, the 2014 debutantes were presented to members and guests. Miss Mallory Hardy was escorted by her uncle, Rex Royer. She is the daughter of Stephen and Melanie Hardy and was sponsored by her aunt and uncle, krewe members Rex and Dina Royer. Mallory attended McNeese State University for three semesters before transferring to South Louisiana Community College to pursue a degree in General Studies with a concentration in Business. She plans to transfer to the University of Louisiana in Lafayette to further her education by obtaining a degree in Accounting. Currently, she is Physical Therapy Technician at Acadiana Physician Therapy. Mallory is a certified personal trainer and in her spare time enjoys photography and working out. Miss Hanna Walker is the daughter of Heather Conner Fontenot and Adam Walker and was sponsored by her grandparents, krewe members Tom and Dorothy Conner. A senior at Westlake High School, Hanna is active in the band were she plays the French horn and serves as the First Lieutenant and French horn Section Leader. Hanna has been in the District Honor Band as well as the Parish Honor Band for the past four years. She is also active in sports; she’s been a varsity setter for the volleyball team for the past four years and this year is team captain. She has also been a member of the softball team for four years. She has served on the Student Council and is a Link Crew Orientation Team Member assisting incoming freshmen. Hanna is employed at Walgreens Drug Store and in her spare time enjoys concerts, painting, traveling and hanging out with friends. Hannah, the daughter of Mike and Norma McVey and the granddaughter of krewe members Russ and Eileen Grantham, was a student at Louisiana State University. The presentation continued with the arrival of Captain Leo Reddoch, III, as Explorer Rene’-Robert Cavalier, better known by his noble title, Sieur De La Salle. Captain Leo and his wife Heather are residents of Lake Charles and are the owners of Reddoch Land Surveying, Gulf Coast Unishippers, Western Shipping Group of New Mexico, and Ship It All of Beaumont, Texas. They are the parents of three sons – Jason, Grant, and Alec. Leo is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University and enjoys sailing, hunting, fishing and golf. Next, the Royal Court for 2014 was introduced. Representing Louisiana Cuisine were Duke Keith Fontenot and Duchess Christine Fontenot. Duke Keith attended McNeese State University and is a manager at the Ashley Furniture Home Store. He enjoys hunting, fishing, snow skiing, traveling and being with family. A resident of Lake Charles, he has two daughters, Kelsey Fontenot and Dr. Amber FontenotFerriss. Duchess Christine is employed by First Federal Bank of Louisiana as a Commercial Doc Prep Specialist. A member of St. Martin de Porres Church, the Duchess has three children Brandon, Cody and Jenny Soileau and four grandchildren. She enjoys gardening, sewing, camping, boating and being with family. Representing Louisiana Music were Duke Darrel Lyons and Duchess Kristine Lyons. Duke Darrel is a graduate of Westlake High School and studied Fire Science at LSU-E and Alameda University. He is an Independent Safety Consultant and enjoys motorcycles and studying and collecting guns. Duchess Kristine is Assistant Director of Quality Management for the Lake Charles Memorial Health System. She is a graduate of Nebraska City High School and the Nebraska Methodist School of Nursing and received a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Walden University. The Duchess is a member of PEO Chapter BI; National Honor Society of Nursing – Sigma Theta Tau, the First Baptist Church of Westlake, secretary for the Westlake High School Ram Band and member of the Krewe of Athena. She is a Pharmacist Consultant with McKesson Provider Technologies and part owner of Caraway’s Pharmacy and Gifts in Westlake where she is gift buyer for the store. The Queen is a resident of Westlake where she is an active member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church. She enjoys photography, traveling with her family and playing with her dogs. She is most proud of her 17 nieces and nephews as well as her seven great nieces and nephews. Royal Entertainment for the evening was a jazz funeral led by krewe member Tony Comeaux and the Westlake Jazz Band. On March 1, a raucous group of Pirates made their way to the meeting place to wreak chaos and have a good-humored time at the Fourth Annual Ball of the Krewe des Pirates. The venue was befitting of a tropical island, complete with Jolly Roger Flags suspended from ceiling, skull and crossbones decorated with hibiscus, palms trees, flamingos, and a sandy beach as they celebrated Pirates in Paradise. Master of Ceremonies Mike Guidry presented the board members: President-Elect Dean Harris, Ball Chairperson Lottie Courvelle, Secretary Pam Harris, Treasurer Donna Duhon, and advisory members Ricky Trahan, Courtney LeDoux and Manley Sims. Charlie is married to Tami Haygood Blocker, and they have five children and two granddaughters. He has been employed by CITGO Petroleum Corporation for 36 years. He is a charter member of Krewe des Pirates, and a member of The Buccaneers, and Krewe des Lunatiques. In his spare time, he and Tami enjoy traveling and the great outdoors. Kenny and Carrie Nichols were presented as Duke and Duchess of The Gulf Coast. They hail from Moss Bluff and have been married for 28 years and have one daughter. Kenny is a self-employed dirt contractor in Moss Bluff and Carrie has worked for the Calcasieu Parish School Board at St. John Elementary as librarian for 22 years. They both enjoy boating and fishing; Kenny loves to hunt, while Carrie enjoys cooking and reading cookbooks. Both are members of Moss Bluff United Methodist Church, Krewe de la Noblesse, Krewe de L ’Amite, The Buccaneers, Calcasieu Boat Club, US Power Squadron and Pelican Coast Parrot Heads Club. The Duke’s coat was a reproduction of an 1850s-era military topcoat of grey tweed with black crocodile collar, pocket flaps, lapel and cuffs. Silver and black skull and crossbones buttons line the lapels, cuffs and collar. His wore a vest of pink satin overlaid with black beaded lace. Black boots and belt and a black cavalier hat with pink and black ostrich feathers completed his attire. The Duchess wore a pink satin two gored full skirt overlaid with sweeping black beaded lace and gathered at the thigh with an heirloom rhinestone brooch and accented at the hemline with a beautiful beaded and sequined lace galloon. with pink and black ostrich feathers. Kenneth and Tracee Hebert were presented as the Duke and Duchess of the Caribbean. They live in Ragley and have seven children between them, along with five grandchildren. Both are charter members of Krewe des Pirates. Duke Kenneth has been a machinist for 33 years with Axiall and is a member of the local machinist’s Union International Association of Machinists. Both attend St. Pius Catholic Church. Duchess Tracee received her BS and MS in Nursing and has been a Registered Nurse for the past 20 years, and a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner for the past 7 years. She currently works at Rapides Regional Emergency Room and Premier Urgent Care Center in Alexandria. Tracee was selected Nurse Practitioner of the Year at Rapides three years in a row. She is also a member of The Buccaneers. The Duke wore a long black brocade coat and lime green vest overlaid with black mesh accented with silver skull and crossbones over lime green satin shirt with puffy sleeves. His black pirate pants were accented with a lime green sash and black leather belt adorned with a black powdered gun and pirate sword and topped off with a black leather pirate hat with black and lime green ostrich feathers. The Duchess was dressed in a tailored bodice of black brocade lined with lime green satin over laid with black mesh accented with silver skull and crossbones. A corded laced-up front accented in decorative beading atop an off the shoulder lime green satin peasant blouse embellished with silver skull and cross bones accented with a ruffled neckline and puffy sleeves worn with black trousers. Her mantel was adorned with a pirate skull with lime green and black ostrich feathers. The crowd rose to their feet as they welcomed the Krewe des Pirates King Pierre IV and Queen Jacqueline IV, Joe and Vicki Vezina, the King and Queen of Pirates in Paradise 2014. The King and Queen reside in Lake Charles and have been married 22 years. Together they have three children and four grandchildren. The King has been employed by Axiall for 13 years and is a member of Local 470 and Central Trade & Labor Council. The Queen recently retired from Dr. Lee J Monlezun after 16 years as a laser technician. She was co-owner of Aerobix Plus and a fitness instructor for 15 years, belly dance troupe member for eight years, and dance instructor for 12 years. She now enjoys being a housewife, seamstress and crafter. Both are members of the Pelican Coast Parrot Head Club and Board Members of Calcasieu Boat Club. District. Both are members of The Buccaneers where the King was 1999 Jean Lafitte and the Queen was Madam Lafitte. The Royal couple is founding members of Krewe des Pirates where the King served as President in 2011 and Captain for 2012 and Queen served as Ball Chairperson for 2011 and 2012. The Queen designed and created their costumes made of skull and leopard royal blue and silver foil fabric embellished with rhinestone trim. The Queen wore a peasant blouse with gathered neckline and sleeves with a shimmering black corset laced up the front. Her skirt was a flirtatious 3-tier flounce layered ruffled skirt with split hemline and train in back. She wore a crystal rhinestone crown studded with large aurora borealis stones. Her mantel was adorned with a pirate skull with royal blue, white and black ostrich feathers. The King sported a black jacket embellished with rhinestone trim. He wore a pirate shirt made of skulls and leopard royal blue silver foil fabric with ruffled laced cuffs. A lace Jabot adorned the front of his shirt accented with a crown jewel. He wore a black tricorn hat accented with ostrich feathers, black pirate pants and laced up black boots. King Pierre IV was awarded the 2014 Sword by Mark Lavergne, past King and past Queen, Debbie Lavergne, presented roses to Queen Jacqueline IV. A toast was led to a room full of pirates. By Jackie Bergeron The King Cake (also known as Twelfth Cake, King’s Cake, or Three Kings Cake) is one of the most visual (and yummiest) symbols of the Mardi Gras season. King Cakes come in a variety of sizes and are flavored with some of the most delectable, and sometimes interesting, fillings. And as we bite into the sweet and savory treat, we hope to find the little plastic baby to become ruler of the party and receive good luck for the coming year. But the original tradition of the King Cake did not pose a happy ending to the finder of the trinket. To truly understand the significance and tradition of the King Cake, we must also understand the history of Twelfth Night as their stories are one and the same. Twelfth Night (or Epiphany) has its roots in the pre-Christian religions of Western Eu-

rope. Pagans of ancient Italy would celebrate the festival of Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture and civilization. Saturnalia commemorated the death and rebirth of nature and in its earliest, and most barbarous form, human sacrifice was performed to protect fertility and prosperity. A fava bean cake would be baked with a coin or a bean hidden inside. Men from the tribe would eat a piece of cake and whoever found the trinket would be named “Sacred King” of the tribe for a year. J.G. Frazier, author of The Golden Bough, wrote that the tradition was “to choose a man who played the part and enjoyed all the traditionary privileges of Saturn for a season, and then died, whether by his own or another’s hand, whether by knife or fire or on the gallows-tree.” His blood would then be returned to the soil in the character of the good god who gave
his life for the world and to ensure a successful harvest. After the death of Christ, Christianity extended its influence and dominated the religions before it. Some of the local customs were adopted into Christian tradition for easier conversion from the old religion to the new. In the fourth century, St. Augustine, a highly influential preacher in the Western world, romanticized and glamorized the story of the Epiphany: Three kings, or the Magi, traveled in search of the Christ Child and took a circular route to confuse King Herod who was following the them so he could find and kill the baby. It took 12 days from the birth of the child to find him. When they arrived at the manger, the three kings showered the infant with gifts. Christians adopted and renamed the “King Cake” in honor of the Magi and the bean or coin represented the Christ Child, which was hidden to signify the difficulty of finding the infant. The celebration was then moved from the winter solstice of December 20 to January 6, 12 days after the birth of Christ. By the 16th century, with the implementation of the Gregorian calendar, Twelfth Night became a staple as the high families of Europe donned
their regalia and held parties to celebrate the start of the carnival season of foolery, feasting, and revelry, and to end the 12 days of Christmas. The cake would be divided and the finder of the bean or pea would become ruler of the party and would have to host the next one, usually held the following weekend. These parties would continue until Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, when the following day of Ash Wednesday started the Lenten season of fasting and cleansing. This tradition was carried to Louisiana by the French and Spanish during the 18th century. It has evolved into the carnival celebration that still carries on across the state today. But it wasn’t until the 1950s that bakers starting using plastic babies as the token of choice and the public began buying the cakes in large numbers. Lake Charles celebrates this centuries-old tradition with Twelfth Night held at the Lake Charles Civic Center on January 6. As you walk in the door, you are handed a piece of cake and everyone eats the piece looking for the coveted token. And luckily, we can enjoy this special treat for the duration of the season. Krewe du Sauvage celebrated its 11th annual ball on Saturday, January 25 in the L’Auberge Ballroom at L’Auberge Casino Resort. It was a black tie event where guests enjoyed music provided by Bag of Donuts and Deep South Productions. Samy Stone provided photography. The theme for this year’s ball was “007…Shaken Not Stirred.” The Royal Court followed this theme by representing different James Bond films of the past. The 2013 “Decade of Debauchery” Royal Court was introduced for the final time: King Henri IX and Queen Sophie IX, Dave & Nanette Evans, Duke Philippe IX and Duchess Henriette IX, Andy & Amber Dressler, Duke Louis IX and Duchess Antoinette IX, Stephen & Shayne Laughlin, Duke Charles IX and Duchess Elizabeth IX, Kevin & Michelle Cline and Duke Pierre IX and Duchess Anne IX, Josh & Roxanne Lincecum. The 2014 royal court presentation began with the introduction of Duke Pierre X and Duchess Anne X, Jon and Robbie Ingle of Moss Bluff. They were presented in costumes representing the 1963 film, From Russia with Love. Duke Jon is the son of Ray and Gwen Ingle of Tifton, Georgia. Duchess Robbie is the daughter of Bobby and Flo Barber of DeRidder and Russell and Glenda Carnahan of Moss Bluff. Jon is plant manager at Matheson TRIGAS and is a nine-year U.S. Navy Veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Robbie is a graduate of Central Piedmont College in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is a real estate broker, certified home stager and owner of Ingle Safari Realty. Robbie serves on the Southwest Board of Realtors and is a member of Chamber of Commerce and Faith Walk. They attend CrossRoads Church in Moss Bluff and have two children, Jordan Fincher and Colton Ingle. Representing the 1983 film, Octopussy, were Duke Charles X and Duchess Elizabeth X, Craig Nichols and Mia Rae Vick. Duke Craig is a resident of Sulphur and is the son

Duchess Mia is a resident of Lake Charles and is the daughter of Albert (Bubba) and Jeanie Vick of Lake Charles. She is a McNeese State University graduate with a degree in General Studies. Mia is an administrative assistant at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. She serves on the board of directors for the Arts & Humanities Council and board for Partners as secretary/treasurer. She is a member of the McNeese Alumni Association and Phi Mu Alumnae Association and is a board member of Krewe du Sauvage. She has served as Captain and holds the honor of reigning as Queen Sophie I. Gena Richard Millslagle of Iowa, Louisiana serves as the Captain and is the daughter of Ivan and Linda Richard of Iowa. She is married to Erik Millslagle of San Diego. A registered nurse, Gena is employed by Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas. The theme was “RECYCLABLES ~ Recycling Our Trashy Ways.” King 2014, Mark Piatt, represented “Glass.” King Mark was born and raised in Lake Charles. He married his wife Lisa in 2001 and they have three children: Bayleigh, Colby and Kassie. Mark has been a member of Krewe De Possede for three years, and enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and having a good time with his friends and fellow krewe members. Queen 2014, Lisa Piatt represented “Paper.” Queen Lisa was born and raised in Sulphur, but moved to Moss Bluff when she married Mark Piatt in 2001. Lisa and Mark have three children: Bayleigh, Colby and Kassie. Lisa has been a Registered Nurse for 17 years with the last 10 years working as a hospice nurse. She and Mark have been members of Krewe De L’Possede for three years. Lisa volunteers in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the International Order of the Rainbow for girls. She enjoys camping and traveling and has visited 45 of the 50 states with her family. Captain 2014, Kim Dyer represented “Recycling Possede Style.” Kim was born in Lake Charles and raised in Moss Bluff. She has been married to T-Ron for 18 years and they have three children, Brittany, Tanner and Colston. Kim is a McNeese graduate with an Associates degree in Nursing. She is currently employed at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse. Her hobbies include baking and decorating cakes. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching LSU and Saints football and taking mini vacations. Kim has been a member of the krewe for 11 years and was Krewe de L’ Possede Queen in 2009. Duchess 2014, Jennifer Kramer represented “Plastic.” Duchess Jennifer was born in Lake Charles and raised in Moss Bluff. She graduated from McNeese State University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. She has been employed by Psychiatric Services of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital since 2006. Jennifer joined the krewe in 2011 and served as a jester for two years. She has three four-legged children, Daisy, Ruby and Bobbie. Jennifer likes to fish but needs a man with a boat! Duke 2014, Ron Turner represented “Aluminum.” Duke Ron was raised in Huntington, California and moved to the Lake Area in 1997 and now lives in Carlyss. He served in the United States Marines and has worked with Otis Elevator for the last 15 years. Ron has two daughters, Tonia Nicole, 22 and Meagan Diana, 17. He has been the president of South Lake Charles Little League for last three years, is the vice president of Mardi Gras Southwest and has been a board member for eight years. He’s been the vice president of Whitetails Unlimited for two years and a board member for five years, and a krewe member for three years.
