LOUIS MASSONNET Master degree Architect | Engineer Politecnico di Milano | Ecole Centrale Paris

About me | I am a hard working graduate with 3 master degrees in architectural engineering, nuclear engineering and general engineering. Positive thinking and fast learning gave me the ability to adapt to various environments where my proven teamwork skills made me efficient at communicating and interacting with others. Today’s architects are constantly facing new challenges and it takes an engineer-architect mastering a whole set of different fields to build nice and smart, to surprise people and make them react.

Bioclimatic Design Study of urban installations under extreme climatic conditions Year: 2016 | Internship at Ecosistema Urbano Arquitectos

07 39

During this internship, I had the opportunity to study the behavior of several urban installations designed to create local climate comfort. I produced 3D models, plans, sections and explanative diagrams of the different buildings for further publication. The first example is Shanghai’s AIR TREE for the universal exhibition of 2010. Here the climatic comfort is permitted by 2 main mechanisms: a 7-meter diameter fan with a varying air flow and side panels to block solar radiation. Various sensors allow to measure the thermal comfort (by computing the Standard Effective Temperature) and adapt the functionning of the devices accordingly.

09 39

The second example is Madrid’s ECOBOULEVARD. Here the air flow and humidity are controlled by a turbine and a water spray located at each of the 16 air intake systems. The flow goes downward in the each air conduct before being directed towards the inner part of the building.

Museum Location: Diocesan Museum (Milan, Italy) Year: 2014-2015 | Team members: 3

13

This project consisted in designing an accessible extension of the Diocesan museum in the heart of Milan city. After an urban analysis, we decided to extend the project area to the adjacent park through a U-shaped hill. The hill is designed for outside activities, temporary external exhibitions or movie projections. The park and the museum are connected thanks to the museum’s green roofs which also play an important role energy-wise: rather than spending on solar panels to produce electricity when it is less needed, it has been decided to increase the inertia of the building and to control efficiently the water use and the ventilation.

This entry to a competition launched in the northern italian village San Candido aims at replacing an old school connected to a highschool. One of the distinctive features of the project is the powerful functional distribution based on the use of an external bridge which connects the existing facilities with the new ones. The functional distribution is marked on the external facade through the use of different materials (stone, wood, zinc) whereas the structure has been chosen to be made entirely in wood.

Above, elevations. On the right, integration of emergency stairs.

Below, plans. At level 1, the bridge connects the refurbished technical institute with the primary school and the new library.

Above, charcoal drawing of the mountains surrounding San Candido. In this project, a particular attention was given to the ground connection and the skyline. The roof design gives a new interpretation of the natural skyline. Opposite page, blowup. The project included all building services in the design to avoid invasive implementation, the water collector is an example. 21

The aim of this studio was to embrace all the aspects of refurbishment, from the technical knowledge of the object to the architectural concept. The studycase is a rationnalist building (Architect : A.Arrighetti) constituted by one H-shaped volume hosting a scientific highschool and industrial sheds for a technical institute. The solution adopted is a strong use of the underground level. 2 ramps allow the students to enter the H-shaped volume in a central node. All the technical institute classrooms and laboratories have been relocated under the H with a visual connection on the ramp (see next double page). The industrial sheds now host the semi-public functions such as the library, the gymnasium and the conference room. An underground hall links the H and the sheds.

An extensive study of the staircase has allowed to transform the vertical distribution in a landmark for the highschool. The central node, which used to host the services, is now a vast open space in which the organic metallic staircase winds around the maintained pillars and the connection bridges. The staircase’s aluminum cladding is wrapped around a steel structure connected to the concrete beams of the existing building. The beams need to be consolidated to support the weight of the new stairs. The color of the staircase enhances the contrast with the stern colors of the existing volumes. A lighting system is integrated in the aluminum panels so that the landmark is also visible at night.

On the previous double page, view of the central node of the H building. View and plans of the staircase. On the opposite page, the staircase of UN city (Architect : 3XN), charcoal drawing. This sculptural staircase has been the main source of inspiration for the project’s stairs. Below, the detailed section of the central node, with the structural solutions adopted for the staircase and the curtain wall.

Residences Location: Locate Triulzi (Milan, Italy) Year: 2015-2016 | Team members: 3

31

This project answers a small suburban town demand for social housing. In a very heterogeneous context, 2 L-shaped volumes were created. The first one, at levels 0 and 1, provides houselike residences to the elderly. The apartments are located around a private courtyard. The second

L, at levels 2 and 3, is built for social housing around a public courtyard. The 2 volumes have different facade typologies. The elderly residential complex has a very pure facade and its architectural identity comes from the volumes articulation which reinterpret the archetype of the

individual house. On the other hand, the social housing floors have an articulated and colored facade though the volume itself is very simple. In both cases it has been decided to create a strong architectural identity to distinguish the different functions.

Above, rendering view of the private courtyard, plans of the ground level, level 1 and level 2.

33

Urban Center Location: Figino Serenza (Como, Italy) Year: 2015 | Team members: 3

35

The objective of the studio was to refurbish an abandoned factory in a small village near Como (Italy) inserting several public functions. A particular emphasis was given to the passage from the concept plan to the master plan. In the concept plan, the defining axis were identified so that the project gains importance in the town. They appear in the masterplan as walking ways, vegetation and volume limits.

37

Heritage Location: Camogli (Genova, Italy) Year: 2016-2017 | Team members: 5

This studio aimed at revitalizing Doria Tower in San Fruttuoso. A project on such a piece of cultural heritage needs to be supported by a deep knowledge of the object. That is why a large part of the study was a thourough survey of the tower that included a surface mapping, a material inventory, a decay analysis and an intervention planning. The architectural project was designed to minimize the impact of the new on this protected site. It relied on an efficient restructuring of the tower’s surrounding environment to generate a series of accessible observation points of the tower’s facades.

39

41

The site is only accessible by boat. A strong intent of the project was to create a second boat arrival point to avoid visual pollution from the beach. The new installation is designed as a discovery path through Camogli’s incredible landscape: the observation platforms arouse the curiosity of the visitors who are encouraged to take a walk and see the tower instead of staying on the beach. The visual impact of the platforms is kept to a minimum by using when possible traditional materials used by San Fruttuoso fishermen. Thus, wood and rope have been chosen for the non structural parts of the installation.

39 43

STRUCTURAL CONSOLIDATION Year : 2016 Location : Vezio Castle (LC, Italy) This project aimed at reinforcing Vezio Castle’s old stairs. 2 interventions were studied. On the external stairs, a simple and efficient solution addressed the reinforcement of the existing stone stairs. The validity of the solution in case of seismic loads was verified via a modal analisis on the Finite Element software SAP2000. On the tower, it has been decided to build a new staircase integrating an exhibition path on the castles of the region. The Cor-Ten new structure allows both the consolidation of the tower and the installation of shelves for the exhibition.

45

LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS Year : 2015 Location : Perledo area (LC, Italy) This studio aimed at analysing all the characteristics of a chosen study case to reach a deep understanding of it and be able to redefine the regulations for new buildings in the area. The reliefs‘ history and morphology, the vegetation and the cities were analysed and completed by a critical review of the existing human interventions.
