PK743-01 & PK743-02 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION WARNING: Use a stepladder to perform the following procedure to reduce risk of serious bodily injury. DO NOT stand on attic ladder when performing these repairs.

Figure 1

1.

Remove spreader brace from the ladder by removing the rivet using a 5/16’’ drill bit from the siderail of the ladder.

2.

With the ladder open, use drill with 5/16” drill bit, center bit over rivet and carefully drill through the two rivets and remove spreader brace from the frame. (See Figure 1). Caution: When drilling out the top rivet of the spreader brace DO NOT drill a hole in the cylinder or try to remove the cylinder. If needed lift the door slightly to complete this process.

3.

Cut out the template at the bottom of this instruction. Place the solid line image over the holes and mark the holes. Make the holes for the new part using the dotted line image. Using a 3/16 bit, drill pilot holes in the frame to avoid splitting the wood. Using 2 ½’’ #12(not provided) flat head wood screws fasten the new spreader arm to the frame. NOTE: The screw should be long enough to penetrate into the ceiling joist next to the ladder frame.

4.

Using the plate provided, place the plate on the interior of the side rail resting against the back edge of the step along the rail flange. (See Figure 2) Using a 3/16’’ drill bit, drill the two bottom holes from the inside throught the rail. Attach the plate with the bolts, washers and locknuts provided. NOTE: Be sure that the ¼’’ hole in the plate aligns with the spreader brace hole in the rail.

5.

Swing the new spreader aroung and attach to the ladder using the 2’’ washer on the outside of the ladder rail as shown in figure 3. Use the ¼’’ bolt and locknuts provided to assemble. Tighten until snug and then loosen 1 turn so that the spreader brace moves free along rail. Lubricate all points of spreader brace after assembly.(spray silicone is reccomended) Caution: Be sure to allow movement of the new spreader or binding will damage new parts. 6. When repair is completed close and reopen ladder to inspect for proper operation before climbing. Note: For assistance contact the Technical Service Department at 1-800-459-2083
