Architecture that prioritises people, community, and creativity. I believe that architecture can promote positive social and political change, create spaces for all and blur the lines between the many and the individual. I aim to explore the founding principles of architecture through interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation, contributing enthusiasm and innovation to architecture that focuses on inclusion and sustainability.

Tower ArT Gallery

Programme: Art Gallery, Archive and Sculpture Park Location: Birkenhead, UK Institution: Sheffield School of Architecture Date: Year 3, Semester 2, 2022 Can Education, Colour and Community Make Art More Accessible? I have often found, that the austere atmosphere of traditional art galleries discourages personal exploration, hinders community engagement and ultimately, diminishes the impact of artwork. I strongly believe that through the incorporation of education and community, galleries can become inclusive, vibrant spaces for all. The Tower Art Gallery utilises inviting, playful, and accessible spaces to create a warm and collaborative atmosphere, promoting both learning and teaching to unlock the true potential of art. To offer a guiding hand, the gallery utilises vertical space to present new perspectives on sculptures, employs bold colour blocks to establish connections between artworks and incorporates glimpses of the natural world to provide moments of respite for the eyes. Externally, the form draws inspiration from iconic towers in Birkenhead, carefully creating views that frame the historical achievements of the past and inspire contemplation of the city’s future. In collaboration with the 2040 Birkenhead Framework of regeneration, The Tower Art Gallery aims to rejuvenate Birkenhead, provide an inclusive, accessible, community space and ignite future regeneration in the region.

Watercolour sketch capturing the gallery from the community bowl. The design maintains its connection to the adjacent high street while establishing a vibrant sculpture park. Walkways integrate old and new to enable each section to operate autonomously or cohesively, adapting to the ever-changing needs and desires of the community. This design not only introduces crucial green space to the area but creates a valuable, cost-free cultural resource for the community.

ShuTTer Board Cinema

Programme: Cinema and Hostel Location: Istanbul, Turkey Institution: Sheffield School of Architecture Date: Year 3, Semester 1, 2021

Inspired by the process of lino printing, the Shutter Board Cinema dissects the cinematic experience into audio, video, and community, whilst exploring their interplay within the realm of space and sound. The façade employs a lattice of timber slats to regulate indoor lighting levels, manage solar heat gain, and promote natural ventilation. This approach reduces the embedded and operational carbon of the building and ensures that the cinema and hostel can adapt to shifting weather conditions. This perforated timber façade encourages the passage of sound, enabling simultaneous live public performances in the amphitheatre and private viewings within the cinema. This synergy defines the Shutter Board Cinema as a leading cinematic destination, while also, enriching the local community and firmly embedding the project within Istanbul’s cultural landscape. The Shutter Board Cinema aims to transform the perception of cinema, enhance the local community and foster connections between people through the mediums of sound, video and conversation.

ThE TWiLighT hoUse Programme: Day and Night Workers Co-Housing Scheme Location: Sheffield, UK Institution: Sheffield School of Architecture Date: Year 2, Semester 2, 2021

Consisting of six interconnected sections, The Twilight House is designed to nurture a lasting community and unite people from both sides of the day. By integrating gardens, communal kitchens, art spaces, and social hubs, the project actively encourages community engagement and communal living. These amenities work in tandem to increase the interactions between residents, create a safe space for social connections and establish a robust support network for residents, particularly those who are disproportionately impacted by night shifts. The design upholds the historical pathways through the site providing a welcoming courtyard and garden accessible to the public. This integration of private, communal and public space embeds the project within the existing community, providing more opportunities to integrate those who feel isolated by the night shift. The Twilight House aims to become a vibrant, integrated society that enhances the well-being of its internal and external community.

KaingA 0ra Government Social Housing Programme: Government Social Housing Location: Throughout New Zealand Institution: Young+Richards+ Date: 2023

Kāinga Ora is a vital New Zealand government agency dedicated to provide affordable and social housing, enhance urban planning and foster the growth of vibrant and sustainable communities.

Marion Terraces The façade combines colour-blocking with unique coloured doors to create distinct identities and personalities for each dwelling while maintaining the overall design cohesion. This design fosters positive social change, community engagement, and challenges social housing stereotypes through the use of brick, aiming to build lasting local connections.

I have actively participated in 10 projects, spanning 146 dwellings across Napier, Auckland, and the wider North Island of New Zealand, providing essential support to those in greatest need. Kāinga Ora’s social housing initiatives have led to increased service accessibility, reduced crime rates, improved environmental conditions, heightened business activity, strengthened social cohesion, enhanced civic engagement, generated superior educational opportunities, bettered health outcomes, and reduced discrimination. Ultimately, these initiatives have significantly enhanced the lives and overall well-being of their occupants. Responsibilities - Drafting and documenting 20 standardised dwellings through technical design and spatial coordination. (BIM Modelling) - Drafting company-wide standardised details for future Kāinga Ora Social Housing projects. - Joined senior colleagues for site appraisals. - Created renders for client presentations.

18

Young+Richards+

Responsibilities - Concept façade design for eight standardised terrace dwellings.

Lister Masterplan This 30-dwelling community serves as a catalyst for local growth and prosperity. The Lister Masterplan offers a spacious, green experience for all residents, maximizing the site’s unit capacity while maintaining a high quality of life and driving significant positive change on a large scale.

On February 14, 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle brought unprecedented and widespread flooding to Hawke’s Bay, resulting in a tragic loss of human life. Numerous people had to be rescued from rooftops, and mass evacuations were carried out to move residents to higher ground. The flooding inundated homes and businesses, causing the loss of personal belongings, livestock, people’s livelihoods; leading to extensive property damage and community hardship.

karemoana drive entry Programme: Entry and Package Drop Location: Auckland, New Zealand Institution: Young+Richards+ Date: 2023

Utilising the aesthetic language of the existing house and fence this entry addition serves as a secure package drop-off space, featuring a double-locked door system and interior package storage. Wooden slats are used to facilitate views from the house into the entry, enabling occupants to spot any delivered parcels, while simultaneously preventing views from the street for added privacy and security. The design thoughtfully incorporates the established architectural elements of the house, drawing inspiration from its use of rectangular forms, interplay of light and dark materials, and vertical lines to seamlessly introduce an entry that preserves the cherished ocean views.

Initial developed design sketch for roof and foundation details.

The entry fits effortlessly into the surrounding streetscape, offering a welcoming pathway and warm interior to greet visitors and deliveries with respect and comfort.

Responsibilities - Designing and modelling three concepts for the entry addition. - Creating client presentation package. - Designing and drafting initial stages of spatial coordination.

By incorporating the existing structure and facade, the project aims to reduce the building’s embodied carbon and utilises an aluminium shroud to manage solar gain while also improving energy efficiency. This shroud frames the first-floor glazing, seamlessly grounding the facade into the environment and offering a point of reference for visitors.
