SAN PEDRO HOTEL DESIGN Design:Peng Xie

Landscape architecture is the main point of this project. The site is located in the San Pedro harbor, which used to be a famous commercial harbor, but now is dominated by the fish market. The fish market is famous in Los Angeles, there always a lot of people come here to spend their weekend. My proposal is to keep the existing fish market and create a “soft natural landscape above the site, provide a natural friendly environment for the public. Hotel rooms are designed on the landscape though this way hotel and landscape integrate with each other.

The USC WRIGLEY CENTER FOR ADVANCED ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY is a research institution for the USC and the public, which located on the Santa Catalina Island. The project is about designing a new research center for the institution. The site is on the cliff, as a result the whole project is based on the quality of cliff. First of all, the cliff can get the light from both sunshine and water reflection, from which I design a dynamic facade to create a light changing—space for the interior. Secondly, the project also take consider the vertical surface on the cliff. In terms of that, on one hand, I try to keep the original texture on the cliff which can use for institution keeping plant, on the other hand, designing a artificial facade on the other side of the building , which can some create special spaces for the program. Thirdly, the project is not only a building but also a pathway to the underwater space and the top of hill, where people can get a good view. People can experience the building through different ways, and most of them can reach the top-open spaces. In terms of program, except the necessary program in the building, lots of open spaces were designed inside the building, which provide more opportunities for people to communicate with each other. Thus, the ocean view on the top and the shaded open spaces inside the building allow people get into the building not only for the research or classes, but also for other activities such as have a coffee, take a nap or just have a relax.

CAPSULE TOWER--MASS CUSTOMIZATION

Design: Peng Xie, Yang Li In recent decades, with the application of new design software and technology such as Maya, Rhino, 3D-Printing, Digital Fabrication, etc, a particular trend in architecture points out towards the dissolution of parts, which can be understand as continuous system. The assumption here is that parallel to the architectural continuous system, we also need to rethink and enhance the importance of the part’s ability in architecture design. Since the development of Network, individual get more freedom then ever time, we are not satisfied with accepting existing world but changing it,which makes users transfer from object to subject, In order to meet these features,I believe open source, combinatoric, reversibility, system diversification are the keys to the future architecture development. Based on this argument,I believe that the mass customization is a way to meet those new requirement of the society. Hence our idea is to Achieve MASS CUSTOMIZATION through the combination of STANDARD MODULE in the MULTI-SCALE COMBINATION SYSTEM.

To achieve mass customization, we have to allow users to “design their own capsule. As the architecture we design these parts which allow users to combine them together base on their own needs. Each of these units is different from each other but with standard joints, with these joints these units can be easily connected or disassembled.

This parts to whole system is like the language. We start from letters then the letters combine into the word, words combine together to become the sentence, sentences connect together then we have paragraph, and then we have the article. This multiple combination system allow us to generate a tower that can meets all the users’ needs.

Each capsule is constructed by the units that selected from our librar.

NEW YORK&SHEN ZHEN TWIN TOWER CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Design: Peng Xie, Kai Yu, Bo Jian The New York and Shen Zhen twin tower conceptual design is about reconsider the situation of high-rise tower in these two cities and provide a new argument that what the future high-rise tower should be in these two cities.

As the urbanization goes on, more and more skyscrapers are built to create more space for city. However, instead of making city more livable, skyscrapers put a heavy pressure on urban space and make city more crowded. The intensity of pressure is determined by pressure and its force bearing area. The problem of skyscraper is that every skyscraper stands as an isolated island in city and make the pressure of population concentrate on one single point, which creates a severe congestion for people and traffic. Another problem of skyscraper is that it totally detaches with urban context, which destroys city’s existing local urban structure. Meanwhile, as mentioned by Rem Koolhass in Delirious New York, the new space created by skyscraper simply duplicates the footprint floor by floor. Such duplication makes urban space monotonous and separate people spatially floor by floor and tower by tower. So, our proposal is to provide a new prototype for skyscraper and urban space. Since going tall is the only solution to create more space in city, why can’t we create a new urban context in the sky.

The New York Tower is a project to plug a series of megastructure into New York urban gird. The skyscraper extends both vertically and horizontally to connect each other as well as the existing building in this area. The circulation of skyscraper is no longer the only way to go up and go down, but become a 3d network system to connect every building in different level. The horizontal extension of skyscraper is not only acts as the bridge to connect different building, but also becomes the public space in the sky.

On The other hand, the Shen Zhen tower is a project to focus on the neighborhood relationship inside the building. Because unlike the New York with high density of high rise tower , Shen Zhen site is a new empty seaside area with some residential buildings. The concept of vertical city here is about the function diversity and small scale neighborhood space. Except the resident unit we also design the office, commercial, educational, etc area for the people. The tower itself in this case is a multiple program city.

RETURN TO ORDER--CITY LIBRARY DESIGN Design: Peng Xie

Library is an institution of collected books and information resources which was made accessible for people to read and reference, it helps human beings preserving human heritage, developing information resources and participating in social education, etc. With the development of library, the open plane rose in the early1960 brought flexible space to make collected bookcase can be placed anywhere. With the wave of digital technology today, however, the desire of flexible space has been up to a higher level – the requirement of new function. How to build an ideal library appropriate for the times is a very meaningful subject for library and construction industry.

Return to order means look back to the truth of knowledge and seek to the new solution of contemporary library .Since the Ancient Greece, the gird of column and the basic geometry always represent the truth of universe. How to create a space that release the spirit of knowledge and the truth throug the order and grid. How to liberate more freedom under the order. How to give people more opportunities to communicate with each other. How to balance the nature and architecture. These questions are the thinking of this project.

GEOLOGICAL MUSEUM DESIGN

Design: Peng Xie The project is about the relationship between architecture and urban space, and how to use architectural vocabulary to respond to new urban district planning issues. Project trying to create a program which combines “independence” and “integration”, and also allow people to communicate with each other in this new urban space.

Dome Over Manhattan Island Structure Master, Buckminster Fuller‘s lastutopian vision: he used a huge glass dome covering the entire Manhattan Island, the city can be self-sufficient. This is a “critical” design. Whether the buildings in our cities also have such a sense of isolation to us?

The Bilbao Effect The Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry is known as the miracle of the construction industry, a building activates the entire city, and Bilbao is very prosperity because of a large collection of architectural masterpieces.

Instead of using a shell to isolate the exhibits from the city,it is better to create a landscape building museum to strengthen the links with the urban environment. If you create an Exhibition Building which being equally active both inside and outside and “free” to enter, so what will happen?

STUDIO 4505 Design:HansonLA

Located at the gateway to Marina Del Rey, CA, this project focused on the redesign of an existing 19,000 Sq ft office space to encourage a creative office environment. The design goals were to upgrade the space including architectural finishes, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, in addition to providing an interactive and collaborative work environment. A series of design interventions provides a subtle identity to the creative office while still allowing enough flexibility for the future company.

Ground Floor Plan

There are two conference rooms was added to the existing office space. One of them was attached on the building on the second which gives the identity to the building and also shaped an entrance space for the office. The other conference room was located inside the building, which also designed as a view point for the interior space .

The Freshigh is a juice bar in Shanghai. Under limited time this project only spent one and a half month to be built from design to construction. The client wants to have a fresh and lovely atmosphere in her juice bar. So we decide to use mint green and white glazed tile to decorate the space. The perforated bended metal with pattern on it on one hand create a special brand for the juice bar in the area, on the other hand we use this element to design the fruit storage space below the ceiling which is the main concern problem of client.

WORGL M4 SHOPPING MALL RECONSTRUCTION Design: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects

The project is about reconstruction of a existing shopping mall. This exciting building was enclosed by the concert wall and advertisement. Our idea is to make the shopping mall as transparent as it can be. The interior retail space can be seen from outside which is also a good way for advertisement. We also design a bridge to connect the existing market which is across the street.

Since the original interior space was quite dark and boring, our design introduce a skylight into the space above the existing escalator. And we also design some openings on the third floor which can bring the sun light into the interior space.

TAIYUAN BOTANICAL GARDEN Design: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects

The project introduces a vibrant artificial landscape with an attractive topography with mountains and hills, wild and elegant vegetation, lakes and waterfalls, paths and buildings. The Greenhouse represents the centrepiece of the new Botanical Garden. It is composed of three domes destined to accommodate plants of different climates, together reinventing the silhouette of the Garden. Two of the three domes accommodate the pavilions for tropical and desert plants. They are integrated into the exterior topography, facing south for maximum exposure during the summer and winter, potentiating an energetically and structurally well though-out solution. The third dome – the aquatic plants– is designed as a stand-alone piece on the lake. The choice of materials follows the subject-matter, using natural elements to create the atmosphere.

The entrance building, connected to the street and a big parking lot, plays a dual role: it invites the urban landscape into the garden and at the same time lets the natural landscape interact with the built environment. The reception and the welcoming lobby are situated directly near the entrance. A cantilevered viewing platform above the water level leads the visitors to the centre of the Botanical Garden. Here they can relish the view from the platform or descend to the lake, which flows through the whole of the park. The natural museum is embedded into the Entrance Building. It is organized along a timeline of different spatial and sensorial experiences, in order to reflect the focus of the museum on natural history.

INTER--FASHIONALITY 3D PRINTING FOR DIGITAL FASHION 3D printed Qipao is a fashion project that I worked with my friend Mingjin Lin who is studying in Royal College of Art in London as a PHD student. The combination of both the traditional Qipao making and 3D printing made us think of new ways to build “slowly”; that is, to think of fashion in a more sustainable way avoiding waste. Both 3D printing and traditional Qipao making are very similar in this regard. Both use as little material as possible, and it’s easy to recycle what’s left behind. And for us, 3D printing is the bridge that connects digitization with tangible creation; bringing the virtual world into reality. But somehow, we still like to keep the old ways. We wanted to embrace the contradiction between tradition and technology.

Connection

The cell hexagon was inspired by cellular structure and computational designer Alessandro Zomparelli’s work. Each cell hexagon was consist of cell part and joint which connect all the cell together. Cell Hexagon

All the hexagon modules are the same size, however, the internal cells within are differently shaped. This allowed the modules to take different shapes once bound together as a 3D printed Qipao.

Qiapo construction is very modular; the garment’s different elements such as the collar, the binding and the cuffs and the main body can all be thought of as separate modules. The collar, specifically, is one of the hardest parts to construct when making a Qipao.

E

The key element in Qipao construction was that they didn’t use seaming techniques to shape the garments. In western dress making, dress makers use seams, which are sewn creases and folds to create and emphasise shapes. In the western dress making tradition this is done to accentuate the shape of the body.

Each module was fabricated using a SLA printer at Royal College of Art, or FDM printers in China. We printed over 200 pieces to make the different Qipaos. The 3D printed pieces were then deep dyed to produce different color effects.

We have faced some problems when using SLA. It tends to break a bit when the connecting threads between the internal shapes aren’t well designed by the parametric modeller. When we dyed the pieces, I had to put it in very hot water which would break some of them.
