Tell us a bit about yourself? I’m currently studying Year 10 at Marist Regional College, Burnie. I’m interested in modelling, drama, art, photography, reading, story writing and special effects makeup. I have 4 brothers, 2 older, 2 younger and I live with my mum on a small farm in rural Tasmania. In 2008 I was introduced to modelling by my Aunty Nikki, I was staying at her house and she was doing some photography and asked if she would be able to take some photos of me. I was a very shy person back then so I was a little hesitant, but I said yes anyway. I have loved the industry ever since that moment.

What would be your message to other girls?

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

My message for young aspiring girls, who want to get into the industry of modelling, is to just go for it and aim high because anything is possible if you believe in yourself and put your whole heart into it. In modelling you can have the opportunity to meet some really amazing people and make friends for life; it also builds your self-confidence, posture and out-looks on life.

My most embarrassing moment was not that long ago. Some friends and I were going into town with our year level coordinator to get the decorations for our grade 10 dinner, our teacher went to get her car and was going to drive around to meet us at the front of the school. We saw a car pull up but because of the rain we couldn’t really see who the driver was. Thinking it was our year level coordinator we all ran out at full speed, yanked the doors open and jumped in, only to realise it was the wrong car. Apologising to the wide eyed owner of the car we all ran back inside, we were all so embarrassed!

What is your favourite quote? The quote that I live by is when something bad happens you have 3 choices: You can either let it define you, let it destroy you or let it strengthen you. I love this quote because it is so true. Bad things happen in life every day, but the world doesn’t stop and wait for you to pick up the pieces.

What would you like to be doing in 5 years time? In 5 years time I would love to have a contract with a modelling agency and be studying at the Australian Academy of Cinemagraphic Makeup. I hope that one day I will be a Cinemagraphic makeup artist and work on movies like X men and Lord of the Rings or behind stage in theatres.

What have you been involved in within your community? I’m quite involved within the community, I have been a Girl Guide since I was 9 years old and with them I have done Winter sleep outs to raise money for the homeless, fundraisers for an orphanage in India and every year I do Relay for life to raise money for Cancer patients and research. With school I’ve done charity work for hospice, volunteered at nursing homes and I am one of the representatives for the Burnie Youth Council. I’m also involved with YMCAB (Youth Making Changes Around Burnie) which is a group that organises events for the youth of the North West Tasmania.

tips for Te e n s Tip 1 – Drink water instead of soda Water is very important for your body. It will help you get rid of all the nasties so you look fresh and clean. Soda is packed with sugar which may make you dehydrated, feel tired and eat bad foods. “H2O is the GO”

Tip 2 – Walk instead of getting a lift from mum and dad Go for a bush walk with your friends or walk to town instead of asking mum and dad for a lift. Staying active is a great way to socialise and if you’re having fun you will exercise without even knowing it.

Tip 3 – Eat healthy Try to make your meals as colourful as possible with fruit and vegetables. You need to try and find a balanced diet and remember, everything is ok in moderation. Keeping a balanced and healthy diet will create a happier YOU!

Tip 4 – Snack Time Make sure you have some yummy healthy snacks ready to eat so when you’re feeling hungry you will eat your snack instead of junk food. You should try a Carman’s muesli bar, they are not only delicious but are good for you too.

15 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

Tip 5 Limit your time on the computer Everyone knows that Facebook is addictive, but try going outdoors and playing a sport or even going to the park. Go on the computer at night after you have played with your friends and enjoyed the sunshine.

Tip 6 Go to the gym The gym has so many different classes that will suit everyone. Try a group session or workout on the machines, it’s a great way to make new friends and meet boys.

Tip 7 Train for a fun run or charity Training for a fun run or charity event will help add some excitement and also keep you motivated. Get all of your friends and family involved so you can keep each other on track.

Tip 8 Show your body some love In between all of this training, book yourself in for some pampering sessions. Having a regular massage is a great way to reward your body for its hard work. A deep-tissue massage also encourages any muscles that are tight or sore from training to relax and release. This is important to prevent injury in the long term.

Tip 9 Tunes to help you train To help you train extra hard, make sure you have some of your favourite songs on your ipod. This will help keep your mind busy and motivated. Have a variety of options so when you’re doing

your stretches you can play some of your chilled out tunes to unwind.

Tip 10 Look the part Exercising isn’t always the most exciting thing in the world so have fun with your outfits. When you feel good you will put yourself in a positive mood and you will be more likely to train harder. Pick a fun bright pair of shoes or some funky tights to add to your workout.

Tip 11 Late night snacking Most people’s favourite time to snack is nighttime, which is the worst time for your body to be eating junk food. Instead of grabbing a chocolate bar eat some protein balls. Protein balls come in many flavours and are scrumptious to eat.

Tip 12 Change your partner Everybody has a unique way to train. Some people like to train for a short amount of time but have a very intense workout. Other people like to take it easy and exercise for longer periods of time. The best thing to do is to change your training partners and try something different so it shocks your body. It will also make it more interesting and exciting.

Fit is the New Skinny

D

espite the volume of media hype encouraging young people to be ‘trim, taut and terrific’ there seems to be little success in changing the young Australian’s silhouette. As more teenagers are heavily influenced by music, film or fashion idols the responsibility falls to them to have a positive inspiration. Individuals in the fashion industry can easily do this in a moral and socially just way by advocating for healthy diets and healthy lifestyles as a pathway to a beautiful body.

people may be more inclined to embrace these changes. Rather than adopt quick fix solutions for image enhancement, including fad diets, extreme exercise and sports that lead to anorexia and other dangerous eating disorders. Being beautiful should not just be about the glitz and glamour on the outside but more about the intellect and moral fortitude on the inside. It’s time for these role models to step up to the plate and make a difference.

Fashion industry representatives should be beholden to the tenets of healthy eating and healthy lifestyles not just for young Australians but for themselves as well. This simply means that they should practise what they preach or model what they believe to be an ethical and moral way of living. Adopting sound eating habits means most foods in moderation and limiting excesses from any food group. Promoting practical leisure and sporting activities is a safe and purposeful way of keeping the mind and body fit. There is a real need for Australian youth to understand that healthy futures are linked inexorably to healthy formative years.

THE MOTIVATED ONE “I believe anything and everything is possible, it just takes a person to put the hard work in to make it a success.”

Samantha Kummerfeld 17

I

’m from Goovigen, QLD. Growing up in a country town and not the city has left limited opportunities for me, however, I always participate in any events possible to achieve my goals and make my family proud. I have always loved modelling as it is so much fun. I have done events such as Miss Country Girl Australia and Show Girl to further my knowledge and experience in the industry. They have given me some of the best experiences of my life. I find myself to be a bubbly, happy, kind person who is willing to do anything in life in order to succeed. Life hasn’t been an easy path for me but motivation, determination and my dad has made me the person I am today and I’m proud of that. In the future I would love to do more modelling.

THE INSPIRER “I am very passionate about ending school yard bullying”

I

am currently in Year 9 at The Cathedral College in Rockhampton. I have two younger sisters Erin (11 years) and Drew (9 years). In July I entered my first ever modelling competition ‘Miss Country Girl Australia’. I was very excited when I was named one of the finalists, as this was my first time and I was not expecting to get that far. Competing in this competition was by far the happiest moment in my life. I had a great time, met some fantastic people and my confidence really grew from the experience. I am very passionate about ending school yard bullying.

Jemah Thomas 13 Bullies need to see the effect their actions have on people. I have been bullied continuously since Year 3. My best friend Tegan has been a huge support since starting high school. In my spare time I like to go shopping with my friends and listen to music. When I finish school I would like to be a paediatric nurse.

Protect Your Skin Slip, Slop, Slap! It’s important to “protect your skin” from the sun’s harmful UV rays and slip, slop, slap! All Aussie gals should wear sunscreen; start young and apply SPF30 daily! Sunscreen isn’t just meant for the beach! Quick Note: If you have oily, congested or acne prone skin, I recommend DMK Transdermal Sunblock SPF30. It’s smooth and light, and leaves your skin feeling fresh and moisturised. I love this sunscreen!

3 tips are: Protect your skin, Care for your skin and Invest in your skin Care For Your Skin Hydrate! Keep up the fluids and drink lots of H2O! Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to the cells and keeps skin super hydrated! On top of this, it’s important to maintain a good beauty routine; wash, cleanse and moisturise morning and night!

Choose good coverage! When searching for the perfect foundation all girls should invest their pocket money into professional coverage! This means, choosing foundations that steer clear of harsh ingredients, are oil-free and provide a flawless long lasting coverage.

Invest In Your Skin Seek Professional Guidance! Put the tweezers down girls! For beauty first timers, I strongly recommend paying a trip to your local salon or clinic, and let the professionals work their magic! If you’re a “DIY” kind of girl, take this time to pick up key tips from your Beauty Therapist for maintenance in between treatments.

Professional Beauty Treatments! Get to know your skin, the products you’re using and how best to use them. I always recommend for girls to take the time to have a thorough skin analysis by professionals before purchasing ANY skin care products! Understanding your skin will help you manage any concerns you may have such as redness, excessive oil, congestion etc. Also you may require occasional in salon/clinic treatments which a qualified Beauty Therapist can personalise for you!

Quick Note: Did you know that it’s important to have your skin assessed each season? Why? Your skin’s response to lifestyle and environmental factors changes frequently, so the best way to stay on top of your skin concerns, is to ensure you are continuing to use the correct home care products.

THE MARINE BIOLIGISTS Natalia Suleska 14

M

y ambition is to become a Marine Biologist. Ever since I was a little girl I always knew I wanted to work with animals. I have always wanted to work at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. Later in my schooling years I realised I was becoming good at science so I began to attend tutoring classes once a week. I moved onto the higher classes and I started getting really good marks in my tests. I was asked if Marine Biology would be something I was interested in. I liked the thought of

studying the sea animals. I think it would be an awesome career to work in the Marine Studies. It would be an amazing opportunity to learn some things about the ocean, as it’s such a magical place. I am now taking courses for the year to overcome my fear of sharks and other sea animals. School has helped me a lot with my future and I am hoping to achieve my goals, finish school and go to University to study Marine Biology.

Courtney Gardiner 14

I

was born in Palmerston North New Zealand, on the 22nd of May 1998. In 2007, when I was nine, my family and I moved to Rockhampton Australia for a new change and better opportunities. My hobbies include modelling, dancing, choirs and singing. I also love animals and one day I hope to pursue a career in Marine Biology or Zoology. I am really passionate about singing and modelling as it makes me happy and I love doing them both. I recently participated in the Miss Country Girl Rockhampton competition and made it into the

second round. It was an amazing two days and I got to meet and work with some really nice girls. Unfortunately, I didn’t go on to win anything but I didn’t mind. It was all about the experience for me, to get some confidence and also to make some friends. Miss Country Girl Australia is a really good opportunity for girls who have always wanted to model, because you can express your true self without judgement. Thank you MCGA and C girl for giving me these amazing opportunities. I am forever grateful. xxx

FUN BREKKY CHOICES THAT WON’T BUST YOUR ZIPPER

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day so we want to help you make the right choices while having some fun!!! 1. Egg-cellent omelette

Have fun with your eggs and add all of your favourite vegetables together. Omelettes are really quick and easy to make. They taste different every time depending on what you add, so you will never get bored.

2. Spread the love

Let’s be creative with your toast. The classic Vegemite or Peanut Butter will never get old but it’s time to put your creative cap on. Firstly, toast your bread then add avocado, vegetables, ham or chicken and top it off with cheese. Pop it under the grill until the cheese melts. Yum!!

3. Cereal Killer

There are plenty of choices when it comes to cereal. You just need to be careful as many are high in

26 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

sugar. Try a healthy choice cereal and add some of your favourite fruits and nuts to spice it up.

4. Stacks of Fun

Pancakes seem to be everyone’s favourite brekky pick. They taste amazing on their own or with some maple syrup. If you’re after a change from the standard stack, add some berries or low fat ice cream on top. If you like a challenge try making some fun shapes or different sized pancakes.

5. Shake it like a Polaroid Picture If you have a blender, then you have your ticket to an exciting brekky shake. Banana, berries, honey, muesli, and some low fat milk are a winner!! Blend it all together and add some ice. Woolahh you have yourself a

quick and tasty shake.

6. Put the Pro in Protein

If you’re super late to school or work and don’t have time to make breakfast, whatever you do… DO NOT skip this meal. You should buy some protein powder to make a protein shake or have some Up and Go poppers stored that you can grab on your way out.

7. Float your Oats

Oatmeal is a super food, which means your body loves it and will make you feel fuller for longer. Try adding some honey to your oats, it gives it a sweet taste. You can also sprinkle some flavoured protein powder on top MMMM.

“Getting out there and participating in everything I can is where I have made many friends for life” My career ambition is to be a model. When I was younger I modelled clothes for local shops at the Maryborough Show. Since the age of 12 I’ve entered a number of modelling competitions. I would love to be a role model for other girls. I have always wanted to work in the fashion industry. At this stage of my life I am completing Year 12 at Maryborough State High while undertaking a make-up course and I’m an apprentice hairdresser at Taylor Made Hair and Beauty Studio. I’m not just a girly-girl I also enjoy motorbike riding and I’m an accomplished Silhouette Rifle shooter, I’ve been in shooting comps and come out with podium finishes along with car drifting. I have been playing hockey since the age of 4 and have been lucky enough to represent my town and school. Playing hockey has taught me a lot of useful skills and I have won many trophies and medallions.

THE CREATIVE ONE “I have a passion for fashion” I live in the small coastal town of Tannum Sands in Central Queensland. I entered Miss Country Girl Australia 2012, to further explore my interest in the modelling industry and to also improve my personal development as a young woman. I’m a qualified hairstylist and have a keen interest in fashion designing/styling and enjoy anything that challenges my creative ability. My latest venture includes making race wear head pieces for local race day events. In the future, I would love to gain further knowledge and skills in the styling/ designing line of work, by studying an accredited course relevant to my interests.

I believe my way of life has evolved from influential peers, Australian Songstress Delta Goodrem, for her inspirational music, and International model Miranda Kerr for her down to earth and healthy lifestyle.

“I recently found a passion for fashion and my first modelling experience with MCGA was amazing” I am currently in Year 10 and I was born in the Northern Territory in a place called Nhulunbuy, a mining community in East Arnhem Land. I live on a small acreage outside Toowoomba and have two boxer dogs and five Dexter cows – I’m a country girl at heart. My dream, when I was a little girl, was always to work with animals. Now I still hope to work with animals as a Vet Nurse, but recently I found a passion for fashion and decided to look into modelling as an option. I heard about the Miss Country Girl Australia competition and I decided that I would give it a go. I am so glad I entered, the experience has taught me so much about modelling and actually walk-

ing on the catwalk, with an audience. At first I was very nervous, but the experience has made me feel so much more confident. I feel ready to take on more challenges and to try more modelling experiences. Not only do I enjoy modelling, I also love playing sport. I play hockey, futsal and I love to run. I also enjoy painting, photography and sketching. I’m just a regular teenage girl who loves to shop, go to the beach, play sport and generally enjoy life. Huge thank you to C girl for giving me these amazing opportunities xxx.

“Acting, modelling and music make me who I am. They shape the way I live my life and shape the person I am today”. I’m an aspiring actress and model. I am currently in “Wizard of Oz the Musical” and have been acting for around 8 years. I would love to have a career in acting. It is my biggest passion and love in life. Modelling is also a major part of my life, I love catwalk modelling and doing photoshoots. They are both so magical. Fashion and designers play a big role in my life, they inspire me. I love looking at all of the gorgeous gowns that are made by Oscar De La Renta or the beautiful shoes Christian Louboutin designs. Music is another love, even if I’m not singing a song just listening to it will bring me to wondrous places. Acting, modelling and my music make me who I am. They shape the way I live my life and the person I am today and hope to be in the future.

LEARN

HOW TO POSE Here are some useful tips and tricks you can do to get the best photo of yourself. These will be handy if you have a photoshoot coming up or even if you just want to take some nice photos with your friends. NOTE: With every pose that you try, the best way to make it perfect is to practise in the mirror before trying it out in front of the camera. Helpful hint: Every pose can be done with you facing directly into the camera or on an angle.

THE DOLL FACE POSE This is a great look that everyone can try. Follow the below steps to get your Doll Face Pose perfect. STEP 1: Open your eyes as

wide as possible without going overboard and looking too crazy.

you’re not feeling anything on the inside it will come up emotionless on your photos and thats not what you want.

STEP 2: Relax your lips so they naturally sit in place.

THE NATURAL SMILE

STEP 3: Put your index finger

between the top and bottom lip to make sure they are a finger space apart.

STEP 4:

A great tip to creating the doll face pose is to try and feel “innocent and shy” by bringing your hands close to your chest and cuddling your body.

STEP 5: This is the most

important!! You need to try and make sure you are feeling something on the inside so it will show on the outside. If

33 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

Tip: A lot of girls make the mistake of adding an eye squint to this pose. Make sure you keep your eyes wide open.

This is the easiest look for everyone to pull off. The best way to achieve this is to get someone to make you laugh. The second you are finished with your laughing fit give a big smile and voila you have this pose down pat. “A smile on the outside shows a smiling inside.”

THE EYE SQUINT Try out this pose, once you get it.. You won’t forget it. Heres how to get the blue steel stare.

STEP 1: Choose an angle to

look at the camera, you can look straight into the camera or on the side.

STEP 2: Open your mouth wide,

when you close your mouth put your finger in between your lips so there is a natural gap.

STEP 3: This is the trickiest step

to get right. Now squint your eyes as hard as you can without completely closing your eyes.

TIP: Make sure your mouth stays in the same position.

STEP 4: Release your eye squint by around 50-60%.

STEP 5: If you feel a strain

around your eyebrows, you must relax them.

TIP: You can master this pose facing many different angles. Don’t be afraid to try them out in the mirror first before picking your favourite to do in front of the camera.

THE POUT You’ll need a bit of practise in front of the mirror before you master it 100%... Stick with it to get the ultimate pout.

STEP 1: You have two choices, you can either follow Step 1 of

the Doll Face Pose or steps 3,4 and 5 of the Eye Squint Pose.

STEP 2: Blow bubbles as hard as you can as though you are

under water for 3 seconds.

STEP 3: After 3 seconds of blowing bubbles stop your lips

exactly in the same position as they were, in your bubble action.

Tip: Don’t forget to hold your eyes in the same position.

STEP 4: Relax your lips by around 20%. STEP 5: Blow one last bubble to make sure that your lips are

relaxed.

STEP 6: This is the most important, you need to make sure you are feeling something inside and expressing an emotion. The best emotion that resembles the Pout Pose is to feel sassy and confident.

THE NO TEETH SMILE This is a great pose that you can learn very quickly. Follow the steps below to get the perfect girl next door smile.

STEP 5: Blow some air out of your mouth so your lips relax. Remember not to lose your smile when you do this.

STEP 1: You have two choices,

STEP 6: This is the most important, you need to make sure you are feeling something inside and expressing an emotion. The best emotion that resembles the No Teeth Smile [girl next door] pose is to feel sweet, happy and a true girly girl.

you can either follow Step 1 of the Doll Face Pose or steps 3,4 and 5 of the Eye Squint Pose.

STEP 2: Try your best to get

your cheeks to touch your eyes.

STEP 3: Release your cheeks

down by around 50%.

STEP 4: Make sure your teeth

are not showing.

THE LOOK OVER THE SHOULDER

The look over the shoulder is a great pose and has two different ways you can use it. Notice the first photo has a gap between the chin and the shoulder and the second example dosn’t. You can play around with both of these to see which one is your favourite.

EXAMPLE 1: The over the shoulder glare.

STEP 1: Turn your body side on and look over

your shoulder.

STEP 2: Make sure you have left a gap be-

tween your chin and your shoulder.

From here you must follow the same steps as the Eye Squint pose.

EXAMPLE 2: The over the shoulder smile.

STEP 1: Turn your body side on and look over your shoulder.

STEP 2: Make sure there is no gap between

your chin and your shoulder.

From here you must follow the steps from the Natural Smile pose.

THE CRAZY POSE This is a bit of fun and it’s really easy. Everyone can come up with their very own signature crazy pose. The best way to get this look right is to put on your favourite song and dance to the music. Ask the photographer to continually take around 30-50 photos in a row while you are dancing. You can then go through all of the photos and choose your favourites. Another great tip is to try and get someone to make you laugh while you are dancing.

THE HEAD BACK This is a great look that everyone can try. Once you have the Eye Squint Pose perfect then this pose will be very easy for you.

STEP 1: Follow steps 3,4 and 5 of the Eye Squint pose.

STEP 2: Either let your head fall directly back like the photo example on the right or on a side angle like the photo on the left. STEP 3: This is the most important step. Make sure that you completely relax your mouth and lips and let them fall naturally without you holding them in place. NOTE: If you put your head directly back your mouth will naturally open like the example to the right. If you put your head on the side angle as shown in the left example it will create a smaller opening.

ARIZONA HUNTER RAIN “You can be anything you want to be”

I

live on 10 acres just outside of Kingaroy with my family. I was born here at Kingaroy 6.5 weeks premature. I have a heart disease from being premature, but it doesn’t stop me from doing anything I want. I have 48 animals. I love all animals and one day I would like to be well known for my animal conservation and care work. I would also love to be a spokesperson to try and help kids see that bullying can be overcome. I have been bullied since Year 3. Some children dislike themselves so much they become nasty to others and some children have parents who just don’t care what their child says or does. When bullying happens, often it becomes very depressing and sometimes some days are so hard that you just want to run away and hide. I would eventually love to help kids stand up to bullies and teach them ways to overcome bullying. I want children to know that it doesn’t matter what bullies think or say, we can still be whatever we want to be.

38 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

Bullying is such a horrible part of life and almost everyone will go through it at some point. I believe there should be more programs and information out there that teaches and helps kids know what to do if this situation arises in their life. Getting into anything like modelling and acting is extremely difficult living in a small country town, but it has really helped my self-esteem and confidence and I would advise everyone to get involved. Never let anyone tell you you’re not good enough and don’t let the bullies get you down. I am so grateful to have had the amazing opportunity to compete in Miss Country Girl Austalia. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. I am

also extremely grateful to C girl. Becoming a C girl has taught me heaps and has given me many life skills. It has not only been so much fun but I have built a lot of confidence and self-esteem through the program. I have received many wonderful prizes and opportunities and I will be forever grateful for that. Thank you C girl.

Thank you for reading and remember “You can be anything you want to be.”

ELI SULESKA “If you want to succeed in something, all you have to do is believe in yourself and be confident because one day you could achieve anything and it will all be worth it”

I

’m from a small Pilbara town called Karratha in W.A. I would like to share my story about my journey that has led me to write this article. It all started in the Year of 2006, when I was in year 5. My family and I went to Perth W.A. in the October school holidays for the Perth Royal Show. As we were walking around and enjoying the view around us, a stand caught our eye and we walked over to see what was being offered. As we got inside the tent-like stand, the lady that was running the stall briefly started to explain about a modelling agency that was situated in Perth. I had some photos and got myself an audition. I was unsuccessful in this audition and because of where I live it was really hard for me to find any further opportunities that were closer to home. I recently found a photo of Miranda Kerr and something within this photo gave me the sparkle and inspiration to continue striving for my aspirations and goals. She has completely inspired me. It was an early Saturday morning and my mother was getting ready for work, I was deep in my sleep when she came into my room and woke me up to ask me about this modelling competition called Miss Country Girl Australia, being held in Broome. I was so excited to see that a modelling opportunity was coming to my

42 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

region to give girls like myself an opportunity to not only build confidence within myself but to give me a fantastic experience and a chance to meet some great people. My sister Natalia and I travelled to Broome on my birthday, the 16th of August, with my whole family, and were ecstatic about what the weekend would bring us. The day of the competition we walked through the venue and were welcomed by the cheering sounds of the other families who were there to support their daughters in the competition. My sister and I were in the second heat along with many other gorgeous girls. We thought we had no chance. At first the adrenaline and nervousness kicked in and I was too scared to even step foot on

the runway, but after learning the tips and skills from the host, I was automatically excited and I couldn’t wait to strut my stuff in front of the crowd. I would just like to thank my family for the support along the way and at the competition, mainly my mum, who has not only been supportive but has given me the encouragement and inspiration I have needed to chase my dreams. I would also like to say a huge thank you to Miss Country Girl Australia and C girl for providing regional girls like myself with all of these amazing opportunities. It means so much to me. I learnt so much at the Broome preliminary and I have taken away not only a whole new confident me but also many friendships. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU xxx

THE PERFORMER Jade Matthews 12

“Singing , music and performing is my passion” I absolutely love competing and participating in Miss Country Girl Australia. I was lucky enough to win a prize for being the Directors choice at the South Coast preliminary. The whole experience has been so much fun and I’ve learnt so much. It made my confidence grow and I met a lot of new friends. I would encourage all girls to give it a try as it has been the best experience of my life. Since I was young I have always sung and danced and I used to do jazz ballet when I was little but then I just performed my own moves and sang along with the music. Singing is my passion; music and performing seems to run in our family. My mum is teaching me guitar and one of my uncles is a professional pianist and guitarist and my other uncle is a singer. I learnt a few tips here and there from them. I have been lucky enough to sing in a few venues in Sydney in front of large audiences and enjoyed that heaps.

THE STRIVER Rebekah Grott 14

“Overall I am a very down to earth country girl with a very big will to succeed in life.” I live in Dalby which is a small country town in South West Queensland. I am currently in Grade 10 at Dalby State High School. Over the last few years I have wanted to pursue a career in modelling or the Beauty Industry. Living in a small country town, rural girls just don’t get the opportunities as city girls do so when you are presented with an opportunity everyone should embrace it. I have competed in a few model searches over the last year in which my confidence has grown immensely. Each time I walk the catwalk I get more confident and I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I hope to have many more great opportunities in the future. My interests also include playing Netball, going shopping and just hanging out with my friends and family. In my spare time I am also studying a Beauty Therapy course by correspondence as there are no courses offered in my home town.

Caitlin Ham 12

“Miss Country Girl Australia was the best experience” I am in Year 7 at Calrossy Girls School in Tamworth. I am the youngest of 3 children. I had never done any modelling before so when I saw Miss Country Girl advertised in the local paper I thought it would be a great way to have fun and meet new people as well as having a go at “walking the catwalk”. To my surprise, I made it through the first heat and into the Grand Final. I was given a special award which included a feature in this magazine and a new outfit which I loved. It was a great way to experience modelling in a fun, yet professional manner and I would recommend it to everyone! Not to mention getting dressed up, having your hair and make up done, getting pampered, it’s a hard life :) My true passion is gymnastics and I have progressed through to level 4 of women’s artistic gymnastics. I train for around 10 hours a week and compete in many regional and state carnivals throughout the year. My proudest moment was when I was announced “Country Champion” and placed 4th in the State. I love to travel, loveeee to eat chocolate and would like to be a vetinary nurse when I finish school or an air hostess or maybe try my hand at modelling! I love to watch rugby league and of course, support the mighty ST GEORGE DRAGONS!! I would like to thank Katie and everyone involved with the competition for such a great experience and I hope to enter again in the future.

“ Remember that you can always get good from bad” Hi, my name is Maddison Lieschke. Since I was a child I have dreamed of becoming a model or actress. I come from a small country town where opportunities are limited, so it is hard to find auditions. I have three younger brothers and a younger sister who all encourage me in everything I do. My role model would be Cameron Diaz. I dream about being on set with her acting. Every chance I get I jump in every play possible around the area and also compete in country shows for Miss Show Girl. Last year, I competed in Miss Country Girl and received a wild card position but did not make it to Sydney. In the last two years there has been flooding around Australia. My house was one of those affected. We have been out of our home twice with our home receiving repairs both times. Experiencing a crisis defines your life and makes you stronger. Since this has happened I have been more determined in my acting as I believe that you should strive for what you really want. My family’s trauma has only made me stronger and more confident!

CHEATING

If you suspect that your boyfriend is cheating on you then you need to get investigating. Don’t accuse him of anything until you have solid evidence to back it up. Most girls notice a change in their boyfriends personality if they are cheating so pay close attention to his actions. A great test is to ask him if you can look at his phone and if he gets really defensive and won’t give you his password then he might be hiding something and it will be up to you to find out what that something is. Once you get solid evidence that he is cheating on you then dump his sorry backside. Stand up tall because you are better than that loser.

LONG DISTANCE

This can be one of the hardest things to go through in a relationship and if you are about to go through this here are some small steps that can help you get through it. 1. Try and stay positive because any negativity might rub off on your boyfriend and you don’t want to make things harder than they are. 2. Keep reminding yourself that one day soon the situation can change and you will be back to being in a normal relationship. 3. Whenever you are feeling sad or lonely sit

COMMON LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS AND HOW YOU MIGHT GO ABOUT SOLVING THEM

down and write him a letter. This will help you say everything that you are feeling, even if he is not there at that time. Don’t let it get you down. So many relationships face this problem and it will make you and your relationship stronger.

YOU DON’T LIKE HIS FRIENDS

Unfortunately this is something that you don’t have much power over. You should try hanging out with his friends more to try and get to know them better. Sometimes a boys attitude changes when they are with a group of boys. It might be better to invite just a couple of his friends at a time to hang out with you and your boyfriend so you can spend quality time getting to know their individual personality. You might just find that once you have spent more time with them you might actually really like them.

YOU KEEP FIGHTING

If you feel that all of your time with your boyfriend is spent on fighting you may need to take another look at your relationship. Sometimes it can simply be a rough patch that you will eventually get through and be stronger for it but sometimes it might mean that you guys are not meant to be. If the fighting seems to only get worse then maybe you should take some time out to yourself and have a break from your boyfriend to rethink your relationship and if it is exactly what you want.

GROWING APART FROM EACH OTHER

This is a very common problem that can happen in long-term relationships. You should try and go on a fresh new date together. Go somewhere or do something that is new and exciting and that you have never done before. This might rekindle your passion for each other. You can try taking a break or telling him your concerns. If you feel that you have tried everything to find that spark in your relationship and it is still not there then it might possibly be time to break up. Sometimes all it takes to reignite a relationship is to break up and then both of you might realise the passion you have for each other which might re-spark your chemistry.

If you’re feeling Stressed:

Grab a glass of milk. Milk has lots of calcium which helps your bones get strong. It’s also known to be a natural mood booster. This can make you feel happier and active for longer.

Have a cup of Camomile tea. If you have ever tossed and turned all night and can’t get to sleep then this is a great way to unwind. Camomile is a natural herb that helps your body relax.

Irritable:

Depressed:

Do like Popeye does and grab some spinach. Some people love spinach and some people hate it. There are some types of spinach that you can buy that actually taste nice!! The truth is it’s really good for you and has lots of iron, which helps make your body stronger and will also put you in a good mood.

and aspirations. My living location limits my opportunities and makes it very hard for me to go after my dreams of getting into the modelling industry. Sometimes you can be faced with negativity and it is these people who have made me stronger and made me want to achieve my goals even more. I now have a positive outlook and I would like to share this with every reader as I am sure there will always be at least one person in your lifetime that tries to drag you down.

According to a recent survey people felt better after they had a banana. The reason is that your body turns all of the bananas vitamins into something called serotonin. Serotonin is something your body produces to make you relax and put you in a good mood.

I was born in the small country town of Gunnedah, NSW. I have always lived on properties in the Curlewis area, 32 kms from Gunnedah. After finishing school locally, I completed a Certificate III in Tourism and a Diploma of Events. I’ve been working since school as an administration clerk. I’ve always been interested in photography, taking A LOT of photos. A few of my friends laugh because I’m such a tourist everywhere I go! :D From 2008, I started doing some promotional work around Gunnedah and Tamworth at Agquip field days and the Country Music Festival. I have been really interested in the modelling industry, however coming from a country town with no contacts and not knowing where to go has made it almost impossible. I then found an opportunity with Miss Country Girl from facebook and thought ‘why not?.’ I would say it was the best thing I have ever done, meeting so many girls and getting so much experience and building my confidence and other skills. Being 20, I’m nervous about getting in the industry but I won’t give up and a huge thanks to MCGA for making this possible for not only me but for all girls across regional Australia.

Waxing Pros Easy And Can Be Done At Home: Waxing can be very simple and easy after you have had practise. You can also buy home kits that allow you to use the wax at home.

Longer Lasting:

Waxing removes hair from the roots which means it takes longer for new hairs to grow back. It also leaves your skin feeling smoother for longer.

Less Risk: In comparison to shaving, waxing has less risk. When you shave, you are dealing with a very sharp blade, so you need to be careful. Waxing minimises the risk of severe injury.

Finer Body Hair: After waxing, the new hair that grows back will be finer and less harsh.

Shaving Pros Painless: Shaving involves running a razor over your skin in a smooth action while you do this, the razor trims the hair. This is a painless hair removal method, unless of course you cut yourself.

Quick: Unlike waxing, shaving is a very quick process.

Less Mess: With shaving, you can wash the soap straight off and you don’t

57 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

have to deal with any excess wax left on the skin or annoying wax strips.

Waxing cons Painful: Waxing can be painful. The pain will normally last no longer than 5 seconds.

Redness: After removing the waxing strip, it can leave your skin looking very red and irritated.

Messy: Waxing can be messy depending on the type of wax strips you buy. Sometimes you have to heat up the waxing pot in the microwave. There are way too many spillage opportunities here!

Shaving Cons Life Span: Shaving doesn’t last as long as waxing. Your hair will grow back before you know it.

Cuts: It is very easy to cut yourself while you’re shaving and it can be very dangerous.

Ingrown Hairs: Shaving can leave you with ingrown hairs, which looks like pimples. You get ingrown hairs when the hair is trying to grow back and it can’t break through the skin.

etting goals is something everyone does, but sometimes there can be obstacles between you and that goal, such as people telling you that you can’t achieve it and other factors like time, money and experience. The modelling industry is something I have been trying to break into for a few years now. I have faced many obstacles which made me start to doubt myself and even made me want to give up.

started to believe in myself again. I entered modelling competitions, got a portfolio of images together, met with modelling agencies and with my new found optimistic attitude, people in the industry started noticing me. I have recently received a contract with a modelling agency and have gained many modelling jobs involving photoshoots, catwalks and expo’s. With the help of those who love, support and care about me, my whole attitude changed and I was not scared to go out there and chase what I wanted. Being positive, determined and having a good team of support really does help you get one step closer to that dream, so don’t give up on it!

Thankfully, I have a huge team of support in family and close friends who keep encouraging me and telling me to not give up. Their positive attitudes have rubbed off on me and I

Having a bad day could be caused by many things including: running late to school, having a fight with your brother or sister, your hair not looking the way you want it to and your friends acting weird around you. This can make you frustrated and angry, so to try and avoid you feeling like you want to stay home and hide all day the C girl team have come up with some handy steps. Step 1. Think. Our first step would be to stop what you’re doing know matter how frustrated you might be. Then ask yourself these questions. l Will this issue matter 1 week from now? l What can I learn from this so it won’t happen again? l What is one small step I can take to start turning this day or situation around? Sometimes if you ask yourself those questions it can really help to find a positive. Don’t count how many bad things happen to you in the day just keep positive and don’t let it beat you.

2. Use your body. When you’re having an off day it can put you in a negative mood and can make you feel unhappy. When you exercise your

body releases these things called endorphins that make you feel happy and also give you lots of energy. You can exercise by yourself, at home or with your girlfriends. If it’s a nice day outside then go for a walk in the sun and we guarantee you will feel much better.

3. Accept. It’s normal to try and hide your feelings when you’re upset, but you need to accept what it is that’s made you sad so you can move on. If you’re having a bad day because you had a fight with your brother or sister say sorry and move on. If it’s because you are running late then accept that you are late and tell yourself that you will do your best to be on time from now on.

www.cgirl.com.au

4. Talk to Yourself. Sometimes overcoming a bad day might mean you need to give yourself a positive pep talk and tell yourself you will be ok and that it’s only temporary tomorrow is a new day.

5. Tell a friend or write it down. When you’re stressed or angry it helps to let it out. A good idea is to tell one of your girlfriends to get it off your mind which can help you feel better. If you don’t have anyone around and you want to get it off your chest then write it down. Once you have told a friend or written it down try and move on and forget about that part of your day.

Miss Independent Coming from a large family it was hard to get attention and we didn’t get to do many activities as funds were limited for out of school activities. My personality has always been quiet and reserved and I often got bullied at school. At the age of 12 I started catwalk and deportment classes to boost my self-esteem and confidence. Although this didn’t stop the bullying it made me stronger and I was able to deal with it. My family has a bad track record for leaving school early so I made it one of my goals in life to make sure that I finished high school and continued onto University. I am so proud of myself as I am currently putting myself through Uni at the University of Tasmania studying a Journalism and Photography degree. I’m hoping to graduate in August next year (2013). On the 5th of October I gave birth to my first child. A beautiful baby boy named Tyler. I’m so excited to be starting my own family, and also preparing for my wedding coming up early next year. I love being a role model for other young people and I am now helping other girls overcome their fears just like I did. I would like to say thank you to C girl for giving me these opportunities, the experience has been rewarding.

3 years ago I moved from Wollongong to the country with my mum, dad and sister Torah. I now live in a smaller community in a town called Inverell. I love going to Green Valley Farm which is a country fun park near where I live. I love feeding the animals and going on the waterslides. I love to dance, listen to my favourite music and having sleepovers with my friends. I love going back to the coast to the beach, and seeing my family and friends. I travelled just under 3 hours to compete at the Miss Country Girl Australia Tamworth preliminary and had so much fun. I had never done anything like it before so I was really nervous but after we had finished the catwalk class and rehearsals I felt a lot more confident. It was so much fun walking down the catwalk and now I absolutely love modelling. If I can do it, so can you.

Make a statement with your own personalised ripped jeans Follow these quick and easy steps to make your old jeans look brand new with your own personal touch. Step 1 – Jump onto Google and find a pair of ripped jeans you like. Print off some images of the jeans that you liked, as it will be a great guide for you. Step 2 –

Pick an old pair of your jeans and lay them flat on a sturdy table.

Step 3 – Decide where you want to make your holes and make some marks with a pencil. This will give you direction with the next step. Step 4 –

Rub the marked spot with sandpaper. You can also use a cheese grater or even scissors if you’re super careful.

Step 5 – Keep rubbing the area until you see the shredded look appear.

Step 6 – Use your scissors and cut strips into the jeans. This will help make it look even more shredded. Step 7 – Another trick is to rub sandpaper in other spots on your jeans to give it the distressed look. Step 8 – To add some colour to your newly ripped jeans, splash a little bit of bleach around the hole. If you’re feeling really bold, flick some colourful paint on your jeans. Step 9 – Wash your new jeans and wait for them to dry. Now your jeans are ready to show off to all of your friends.

I am in Year 11 at Rockhampton State High School and I am currently undertaking my first year as an apprentice chef. I enjoy the performing arts and participate in singing, dancing and musical theatre. Music and singing are a very important part of my life. Another hobby I enjoy is horse riding. Having grown up around horses they are a major part of my life. I love animals and have a few pets, two dogs, a cat, a horse and a cockatiel. I recently competed in the Miss Country Girl Australia competition. Having not modelled before, it was a big step out of my comfort zone. However, it was one of the most positive experiences of my life and I would recommend that every girl interested in modelling give it a go. There are things that I could not live without. They are my family, friends, music and my pets. My family and friends are everything to me. They support me with everything I do and help me to make the right decisions. Myth

BUSTING!! FINALLY SOME ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS EVERYONE HAS BEEN WONDERING ABOUT BUT TOO EMBARRASSED TO ASK

E

veryone knows how quickly rumours can get spread around school... So we thought we would ask people some of the rumours / myths they have heard so we can finally clear it up once and for all.

Myth: Skipping meals will make me skinny?

Rumour: The popular girls will never get bullied!!

Girls we have some news for you that will make you never want to skip a meal again!! Skipping a meal is actually really bad for you and may make you put on more weight. It makes your body think that it will not get food again so the next time you eat your body will hold onto more calories. The best thing you can do to look your best is to eat healthy regular meals and exercise, your body will love you forever.

Fiction, just because someone might be “popular” doesn’t mean they will never get bullied. Everyone in their life no matter who they are can be bullied, so don’t think you’re alone or let the bully get you down. They are not worth you losing your confidence and self belief… “So stand tall and be proud of who you are.”

Myth: You can eat whatever you want as long as you exercise 3 times a week you won’t put on weight?? FALSE!!! Healthy eating is a huge part of keeping a balanced weight and positive lifestyle. Your food intake is actually more important then exercise for weight loss. Remember energy in equals energy out, which means the more junk food you eat the more you have to exercise.

Myth: If you drop your food and you pick it up within 5 seconds you will avoid catching germs!!

RE-TOUCH FREE PAGE

FALSE! No matter how quickly you pick your food up off the floor-if you drop it, you will still collect the same amount of germs.

There are many reasons why some people get pimples and others don’t. Almost everyone at some point in their life will suffer from pimples. Although they are more common in teenagers it DOES NOT mean that some adults don’t get them as well. As awful and embarrassing as they can be just remember that they are natural and a part of life.

Myth: Only overweight people have cellulite...

Myth!! Anyone at any weight can have cellulite. The main cause for most people is genetics. You’re not alone, 90% of people have cellulite, even boys.

Rumour: Emo people are sad 24/7!!

Myth: A so called “emo” is best described as someone that likes to wear a lot of black clothes. Wearing a lot of black and expressing yourself doesn’t mean you’re sad all of the time. Just remember no matter what you wear or how you look, everyone is equal.

Eating healthy and exercising is the best way to feel more confident and happy within yourself

Plan your outfit in advance

The second you know the date of your modelling competition start to plan your outfit. Make sure you’re comfortable in what it is you have chosen to wear. If you decide to wear a dress then make sure it isn’t too long, you don’t want to be tripping over. Secret: If it’s your first time modelling and you’re nervous then wear a dress that moves when you walk.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

The biggest mistake some girls make is buying shoes that are too high and that are uncomfortable!! You dont want to be walking funny on the catwalk or slipping over. Pick a pair of shoes that you find comfy. Secret: Wedges or a shoe that doesn’t have a skinny heel are the easiest to walk in. When you buy a new pair of shoes practise your model walk on the concrete to scuff the bottoms, it takes away the slipperiness.

65 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

Hair styling

Have a think about what kind of hair style you want for your competition and practise it a couple of times before your big day so when it comes around you will be a master at it. Secret: Make sure the judges can see your face and that your not hiding behind your hair. If you do an updo make sure it’s not tight so you don’t give yourself a headache.

What to eat before a competition

Make sure you have a big healthy breakfast in the morning of your competition so you have enough fuel to strut your stuff on the catwalk. Also drink plenty of water leading up to your big day and throughout the day as it will help your skin look fresher and keep you hydrated. Secret: Plan your meals, make sure you bring snacks that are quick and easy to eat.

5

Beauty Sleep

Get yourself in a good pattern making sure you’re getting 8 hours of sleep every night. This will help you look fresher and also getting enough sleep helps fight swelling and redness so you will look your best for the judges. Secret: Have a camomile tea before bed as it will help you relax and fall asleep easier.

C girl has opened the door to so many opportunities for me to try and I am forever grateful for this. I absolutely loved my photoshoot it was one of the best days of my life... not only was it a great day but I have now received my images which will be memories to last a lifetime. I have added one of my favourites to my story. :D When I heard that I had also made it to the C girl All States Final I felt like screaming with excitement. I will never forget my first day of High School. It was so exciting and I made so many friends. Everything was going well until it came to home time. It started raining that afternoon and it was slippery in my new school shoes. I was on the bus and it came to my stop. I got to the second step and I slipped backwards and my dress went over my head. The bus driver and everyone on the bus saw my undies and I went bright red.

I was so excited for my schools swimming carnival, it’s always so much fun with my friends and my crush was going to be there. My crush was walking past me while I was doing a handstand on the grass, he gave me a funny look and his friends were laughing. I went to the bathroom to see if I could see why they were laughing and I was horrified to see I forgot to shave my underarms. It was the most embarrassing day of my life!!

Emma NSW

I was shopping with my girlfriends and I was wearing my favourite pair of jeans that I looooved so much. They were dark and had rips everywhere. We were starving so we went and got some food. I dropped my wallet and when I went to pick it up I heard this funny loud noise. My friends burst out laughing because my jeans had a huge rip in them right on my backside. Everyone in the food court saw it happen and I quickly ran to the bathroom.

I had a huge crush on my best friends brother and everyone knew but him. I would always get so nervous around him and stutter. One night, I was facebooking my best friend and I was talking about how cute her brother was and how I have a huge crush on him. My phone started to ring and it was my best friend. I asked her if she got my last comment on facebook and she said she wasn’t on the computer because her brother was. I got so embarrassed and quickly signed out of my facebook.

Green with Envy

I wanted to try something different so me and some friends went and tried some sushi. I took a big bite out of a sushi roll and to my surprise it didn’t taste that bad. I could feel something caught between my teeth. I had a look in the mirror and it was a huge bit of green seaweed. I didn’t have anything to get it out with so I had to walk around the shops with this huge bit of green thing in my teeth until I got home. I didn’t smile or talk for the rest of the day.

Smelly Wind

I was in maths class and I was the first one in so I was sitting by myself. My tummy was feeling really funny and I needed to pass wind. I thought I would quickly do it before everyone came in. I let one off and it smelt horrible! Everyone started walking into class and my crush had to sit next to me. He got up and looked at me and said Gross! Did you fart? Everyone started pointing and laughing. It was the worst, most embarrassing moment of my life :(

I

don’t like it when there are negative comments about young girls modelling as it is just like any other kid playing sport, singing or dancing, it just depends on what the person is interested in. Modelling has brought so much to my life. It has given me confidence, introduced me to many great friends, but more importantly it has been soooo much fun. Like anything else, most kids do it for fun and some that are good at it will become a professional and potentially build a career from it. Boy Talk

You spot your crush at your school dance and he is on the dance floor.. OMG what do I do?? “Just be yourself and someone will love you for you, if they don’t they simply aren’t worth it”

Ruby Kelly

1.

First things first, stay calm and act cool!! Have a look over and see if your crush is looking at you. If he is then give him a little smile then look away. Give it a little bit longer and do the same again. If he is catching your eyes for the third time then he is definitely interested.

2.

Once you and your crush have caught eyes at least 3 times, start dancing closer to where he is and act like you’re having the best time ever. By you having a great time or even looking like you’re having a good time it will make it easier for your crush to talk to you because he will be just as nervous as you are.

3.

Try and find an excuse to get his attention. If you know any of his friends, go and say hi to them first then say hi to your crush or accidently bump into him on the dance floor, which will help get his attention and start a conversation.

4.

Once you have his attention the hardest part is over. Ask him if he is having fun or if he likes the song that is playing and this should spark a conversation.

5.

Your now talking to your crush, which is so exciting… When you have finished talking to your crush, ask him if he is on Facebook and tell him you will add him.

Delta May Lowe Helpful tip from C girl: It is so exciting and scary seeing your crush, your heart races at a million miles an hour.. Girls, the same thing happens to the boys, they just won’t admit it all of the time. If things don’t work out with your crush then don’t worry, it wasn’t meant to be and there are plenty more boys in the sea, so don’t get too upset and keep positive.

KEEPING FIT WHILE HAVING FUN

We found out that there are such things as being fit and having loads of FUN along the way. C girl decided that they would take it upon themselves to trial 5 exercises to vote to see what they scored in a fit to fun rating. Below are the exercises in order from the most to the least fun.

THE WINNER IS 1. Roller BLADING

3. Beach Tennis

We gave this exercise a fun score of 10/10. This is a fantastic all body cardio session that is great for your legs. It can be hard and you may need a lot of practise before you become a pro, but it is well worth it. We voted this sport to be the number one exercise you can do to not only stay fit but to have fun while your doing it.

This exercise received a fun score of 7.5/10. We took a bouncing ball and tennis rackets to the beach and made a pretend tennis court on the hard sand. This was so much fun by the end of the session we were all covered in sand from head to toe after our dive hits, which only made us laugh more. This is a great exercise for the whole body and you wont even notice that you are training because you will be having the best time with your friends in the sun.

2. Surfing This received a fun score of 8/10. We had so much fun learning how to surf. We didn’t realise how much exercise we were actually doing until the next day when we woke up super sore. Make sure you get a surf teacher to go through all of the hazards and the techniques with you. It can be very dangerous so you need to take all safety precautions. It did become easier after awhile but it didn’t get any less scary. If you are a fun thrill seeking kinda girl then this is the exercise for you.

72 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

relaxed so you enjoy it more and the competition aspect isn’t a buzz killer.

5. Canoeing Received a fun score of 6/10. Canoeing was a great exercise especially for the upper body. We only found it really fun when we made up games and raced each other. By the end of the hour session we were absolutely pooped. We woke up sore in muscles we didn’t even know existed. Canoeing is the most fun if you can gather some friends together to go with.

4. Team Sports We played touch football and this received a 7/10. This is a whole body training session and is great socially. You will bond with people and work together as a team, which will help you make and build great friendships. We loved this exercise but at times we found that it got too competitive. If you’re out to have fun try and keep the game

ALL in ALL we realised that no matter what you do as long as your with your friends and you add your touch of creativity absolutely any exercise can be FUN.

Confidence is the key

TO SUCCESS!!!! FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT is our favourite quote. This will not only make you look good but feel good as well. In 10 simple steps we are going to teach you the keys to confidence and to shine your way through life. IT’S YOUR TIME TO SHINE.

1

Find your Ruby Tuesdays: This is a

technique where you act as another character that is sassy and confident. The best way to do this is to pretend that you are a famous super star. You can even give your famous super star character a name like we have done… RUBY TUESDAYS. If ever you feel like you are in an awkward situation with a new bunch of people or you have to perform on stage, jump straight into your RUBY TUESDAYS character and it will get you through any scary, nervy situation.

2

Exercise: Causes the body to produce

endorphins... Translation? These are chemicals that can help a person feel happy and confident. If you don’t feel up for a complete workout then even just getting out for a walk everyday will give you the inner feel good and confidence that will shine through.

3

Keep positive, act positive: There is nothing better and more empowering than a positive attitude. The best way to keep this under wraps is to write down all of your favourite positive quotes on pieces of paper and hang them up around your room. Make sure you read them everyday. This positive influence will rub off onto those around you. There is nothing better than being a happy, confident and fun loving girl.

4 5

Put a smile on your dial: Smiles are

contagious, so pass on your gorgeous smile to everyone. A smiling face shows inner beauty and confidence. Your face is much prettier smiling anyway so you get an added bonus.

Visualisation: This is where you need to visualise yourself achieving your goals. “By visualising”, research has shown that there is a

73 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

higher chance that your goals and dreams will come true, which will create a shine of happiness and confidence. So take some time out in the fresh air, relax and day dream...What could be better?

6 7 8 9 10

Do something nice for yourself: Whether it be a new hair cut, a new outfit or simply painting your nails a crazy colour, doing this will give you that extra kick in your step and make you feel good about yourself. Make a new friend: Set a goal for yourself to

make a new friend every month. By doing this you will meet so many more people and you will become a social butterfly. This will also allow you to share your positivity and to spread the laughter.

Go outdoors: Spending at least half an hour

outdoors everyday will give you that extra kick of confidence. Fresh air will help you think clearly and give you a feel good attitude.

Wear a bright lipstick or a new gloss:

Even if you only wear it for half of the day it will bring back the spring in your step and will not only make you look more confident but you will feel it as well.

Laughter: They say laughter is the best

medicine! We say that laughter is the best potion for confidence! So start laughing as much as you can. Laugh even at yourself and smile at the simplest pleasures in your life. It will bring a sparkle of confidence to your day.

Role Models “Stand up for yourself and others and turn your experience into a positive, just like I did” For such a long time people have told me that I should think about modelling, especially because I have always been so tall. My height was something I felt uncomfortable with, awkward even, until recently and now I love it! I guess I was like most other girls, wanting to just fit in but my height always made me stand out and even made me an easy target for bullies. Bullying is something that all of us will experience at some point, some worse than others. Recently, I have been targeted by bullies but this time I did not let them affect me, in actual fact they had the opposite effect. I entered Miss Country

Eedi Jennar

Girl in Tamworth with the love and support of my family and friends, determined & confident and I am proud to say that I made it into the Tamworth finals and received a Special Mention. Being bullied is a tough experience but I have learnt just how many people will stand up and support you if you speak up and tell someone. Don’t let bullying happen to you or anyone, don’t be quiet and say nothing. Stand up for yourself and others and turn your experience into a positive, just like I did.

DonKirst ovanen 14

“ I want to put a STOP to bullying” I have been doing competitions for 3 years but my reasons for starting were not the normal ones. Don’t get me wrong, I love fashion and getting all glammed up but I had been severely bullied the first two years of high school, so much so that I suffered a complete breakdown. Modelling was my way to build up my self esteem and confidence and to show these bullies that I refused to be a victim anymore. Miss Country Girl Australia and C girl have been fantastic along my journey and has also given me that extra step and confidence I needed. I would like to thank everyone at MCGA and C girl for helping me get that extra step closer to my goals. I would recommend everyone to compete as it not only provides us country girls with amazing opportunities but more importantly it will build your self esteem and confidence and you will have loads of fun. My goal would be to succeed in this career and become a role model and advocate for the kids who have and still do suffer this torment everyday. I want to put a STOP to bullying.

Miss Sporty ‘You don’t have to be the best to be your best’

Julie - Anne Templeton 15

I love Fashion, photography, going to the beach, hanging out with friends and most of all I love shopping and checking out new styles and trends each season. I’m involved in many different sports, surf life saving, swimming, and volunteer lifeguarding at our local beach Woolgoolga, which keeps me fit and healthy. I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse in the navy, or becoming a reporter, so I always study hard. I have competed in Miss Country Girl Australia at several locations and have absolutely loved it every time. I have learnt a lot and met many great people through the Miss Country Girl Australia search. Thank you MCGA for giving us these opportunities.

The ambitious one Hi, my name is Stephanie and I grew up in Tamworth. When I was a little girl I would spend a lot of my time at my Nan and Pop’s in a small town of 400 people called Emmaville. I would love to chase the cows and sheep, ride horses and motorbikes, go swimming in waterholes and fishing in rivers. As I got to the end of Primary school I discovered that I was very good at sports and my dream was to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. This dream shortly came to an end in year 8 as I had damaged my

78 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

knee which I am still recovering from. Therefore my dreams had to shift; now with my vision of a big city with bright lights this would mean a massive change within my life. I left home and moved to the Central Coast near Sydney at the age of 15, leaving my family and friends behind. I was a bit lost for a while not knowing my correct direction, but I had soon found it. This goes to show that no matter what you may go through in life, what downfalls you face, you can always re-establish yourself if you have the right direction.

Ask mum and dad

Make sure you always get your parents permission before you go planning a big sleepover.

Think of a theme

Think of a fun theme you want to have for your sleepover and get all your girlfriends to dress up or bring something that will suit your theme. An example could be to dress up as your favourite singer or character from a movie.

Who’s coming??

Have a think about what best girlfriends you want to come and start writing your guestlist.

Making your invites

Once you have your list finished, then its time to make some fun invites. Try and match the invites to your theme. You can make each invite unique by hand writing a different joke on each invitation. Don’t be afraid to go over the top with glitter and colours. The more it stands out the better.

Time to shop and decorate

The day before your big sleepover make sure you go shopping with mum so you can get all of your decorations, party supplies and stuff for games. The morning of your big sleepover decorate your house in your party theme and make sure you have plenty of room to hang out with your girlfriends.

When your guests arrive

Have some music playing when your girlfriends arrive and greet your guests at the door. TIP: To spice up your party, you could write on the invite that everyone will need to pull 3 funny faces to enter the party. It would be even cooler if you got your mum to take a photo of each guest pulling their funny faces.

Time to be creative

Before your party, buy some plain white t-shirts or singlets and get you and your girlfriends to decorate your shirts with letters and glitter. All of the girls can write out their nicknames on each of their shirts and make some funky designs. Make sure you get some happy snaps of course.

Lights, camera, fashion!!

After you have finished decorating your brand new custom-made shirts, find a space where you can have a mini catwalk and play some music. Take it in turns modelling your new t-shirts.

Dinner / Dessert

Nothing says a sleepover better than takeaway pizza with all of your favourite toppings… YUM!! Once dinner is sorted it’s time for some dessert. Make some cupcakes with your girlfriends and decorate them with writing icing. You can write your nicknames or draw some cool pictures on them.

Movies and junk food

You can never go wrong with a chick flick with cute boys, and enough junk food to make you want to pop. If you’re brave enough to watch a scary movie then that always adds lots of excitement and screams.

Before you go to sleep

Play a game with your girlfriends called 3 questions. Each friend has to ask another friend 3 questions and they have to answer truthfully and if you think they are lying then they have to do a dare.

Jehsika Peacock xxx

Makeover

Now that you have made your new t-shirts it’s time to makeover the rest of you, by bringing out your inner girly side and doing what us girls do best... MAKEOVERS. Get out all of your nail polishes and makeup and have some fun with your girlfriends.

Your super fun sleepover is now complete and your friends won’t forget how much fun they had plus you will have heaps of photos to last a lifetime

Carla Fortuin 20 “I suffered 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns to my face but I decided that I was not going to let a burn define me or take over my life. I was still here functioning and determined”

H

ey readers, my name is Carla Fortuin. I am from the country town Biloela in QLD. I loved competing in Miss Country Girl Australia. It was an amazing experience and the girls were all so lovely. It was such a pleasure to meet Katie the director who is doing amazing things helping country girls like myself build confidence and self esteem. Thank you Katie for all of the hard work you are doing for us. Your passion is inspiring. Having the confidence to do the Miss Country Girl pageant was a self accomplishment because this time last year I was on my road to recovery after suffering 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns to the left hand side of my face. I was at an engagement party and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when a butane gas stove caught alight. I was taken to our local hospital but was immediately transferred to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. This was definitely the hardest experience I have had to overcome. It all happened so quickly it was like a night-mare and all I wanted to do was to wake up from my dream and go back to my normal life. The first time I

80 C GIRL CGIRL.COM.AU

looked in the mirror a sudden case of shock and disbelief came over me. I couldn’t believe this had happened to me and I kept asking WHY ME….? After a few days of feeling gloomy and sad, my mum told me that instead of focusing on the negative part of my situation, to look at all the things I have to be grateful for. She was absolutely right. I had the support of my family, friends, and my community. It was through their positive and encouraging attitudes that I found inner strength and determination again. From that moment on I was not going to let a burn define me or take over my life. I was still here functioning and determined. I made a promise to myself that day that no matter what situations life throws at me, I wont be a victim. I will always fight and push through it. After a couple of months went by and my face started to show signs of healing I was then ready to be discharged from the hospital. It was so great I couldn’t wait to get home and continue on my journey.

The positive attributes of my experience taught me that confidence stems from within you. You have to believe in yourself; don’t let your insecurities get the best of you. All of us have hardships but perseverance is the key to happiness. The gloomy days won’t last forever. As long as you have amazing friends and a supportive family you will get through anything. Don’t ever let an opportunity ... pass you by. You only live once... so make it worthwhile. Keep striving for your goals and ambitions. Only you can accomplish it, no one else can do it for you. Although my burn experiences was challenging and very hard emotionally I wouldn’t change it for the world. It made me stronger and wiser. Keep pushing guys, you’ll make it through xx. Special thanks to the Royal Brisbane Hospital and to all my family, friends, partner and other supportive members of the Biloela community. Also a huge thank you to Katie and the C girl magazine for giving me this opportunity and allowing me to share my story. You can be a C Girl too!! Simply apply at www.cgirl.com.au

3

GOJI BERRIES

Goji Berries have benefits in mental well-being and calmness... translation? You will be a happier person and less stressed. If you love playing sport then eating goji berries will be a bonus as it helps improve performance. Just a handful has the nutritional value of you eating 5 different kinds of fruit and veggies. It also helps with getting a good night’s sleep so no more restless nights. Eating foods high in antioxidants improves your memory, which will come in handy especially around exam time.

4Avocado

Jewellery - Toothpaste Put a little toothpaste on an old toothbrush and use it to make your diamond ring sparkle instead of your teeth.

- Tomato Sauce Let tomato sauce do the work of shining your silver jewellery. If your ring, bracelet, or earrings have a smooth surface, dunk it in a small bowl of sauce for a few minutes. Rinse your jewellery clean, dry it, and it’s ready to wear looking brand new.

How to keep your fashion looking brand new Clothing If you want to prevent your coloured clothes from fading, hang them to dry in the shade not the sun. This will help keep the colour looking fresh.

Shoes and bags

To make your denim last longer, only wash it every 3 months if you can. It will keep its colour and shape.

To avoid having stinky shoes when you’re out with your friends, make sure you sprinkle baking soda in them. This will take away any nasty smells. Ask your mum and dad for something called Scotchguard, you spray it on your bag and it keeps it looking brand new.

THE BELIEVERS Casey Saron 15 “Believe in yourself no matter what anyone says” I’m currently living in Sarina, in a small neighbourhood. I had the opportunity to attend Miss Country Girl Australia held in Rockhampton. I made it through to the finals but unfortunately didn’t get through to the next stage. Although I didn’t mind. I gained a lot more confidence and I can say that I have a lot more experience plus I had loads of fun. I have always loved doing modelling for the reasons that I have met people I never thought I would have and I have made lots of friends since starting. I believe that anyone can do anything. Somewhere inside everyone, they all have something that they would really like to try,

so why not give it a go? The only way to get better is to practise and believe in yourself no matter what anyone says. Family and friends are the best supporters. They really gave me a confidence boost and the support I needed. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am now and I may have never taken the chance to be in Miss Country Girl Australia and to be featured in the C girl magazine. So my word to you is...

“If you take the chance and believe in yourself you could end up exactly where you want to be”

“Believe in someone you care about, it can make a difference in their life” I was born in Inverell, NSW. My family live on a property near Boggabri and I attend Gunnedah High School in NSW. Boggabri is a small, quiet community, which is growing rapidly due to the mining industry. I love riding my Arabian gelding “Sebastian” [Seb], camping, dancing, socialising with my friends and helping my little sister with her riding. I would like to become a vet nurse and have the opportunity to become a wild life carer in Africa, working with the big cats. Travelling overseas to a 3rd world country and being able to help the children who have no family has also been a passion. I believe that making a change in just one person’s life matters and if I can do that I will be happy.

If you have an event coming up or an exciting date with your crush.... there is nothing more embarrassing than yellow teeth!! If your lips are dry it can mean that you are dehydrated so grab a bottle of H2o. Another good trick is to dab some Bio-oil on your lips every morning to get those soft luscious lips.

Massage this through your hair, concentrating on the ends. Leave this in for 10 minutes before washing your hair as normal. You will leave your house with that ‘salon shine’.

SOFTER SKIN

If your skin is feeling really dry then put some of your moisturiser in a plastic container and pop it in the microwave for 20 seconds. When the moisturiser is warm it will work better when repairing your skin.

Kiara Malcolm 13 I live in Broome, WA. I am one of a family of five (including my two siblings Jazlyn, 4, and Taj, 2). I love photography, dance, art, singing... basically anything creative. My family has lived in the small multicultural town of Broome for three generations. I have a rich heritage of cultures including, Aboriginal Australian, Maori and Welsh. Currently, I am schooling at St Marys College and I am loving the dance and ICT programs! After school I have a very busy schedule, which I like because it keeps me motivated and determined. I’m really lucky to live in Broome because I gain a lot of country coastal experiences like camping, fishing and always meeting new people due to our town being a tourist attraction. I have made many great friends but find it difficult at times because they stay for a few years and then move on. My idea of a fun time would be riding around on the quad bikes in the bush with my friends. When I heard of the competition ‘Miss Country Girl Australia’ I thought it would be great to do because we don’t get many things like it here. I had one of the best experiences of my life and would recommend it to all regional girls across Australia. Thank you so much MCGA for the opportunity of a lifetime!

rep the skin! Every makeup application needs a beautiful canvas to begin with! The clearer and healthier your skin is, the less foundation you will need. Wash the face with a suitable cleanser for your skin type before any makeup application.

For an even application use a foundation brush to apply the product. Start off on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and then blend outwards to hairline, cheeks and neckline - The key is to blend blend blend! No one wants to look like they are wearing a cake face mask!

I always use a primer before my foundation, as it helps moisturise, smooths out the skin, cancels out redness in the face and keeps your makeup lasting longer.

Lightly tap concealer under the eyes and on any visable blemishes if need be. Concealer is thicker than foundation: a little bit goes a long way!

It is good to have 2 shades of foundation - a Summer and a Winter shade, because naturally your skin gets darker in the warmer months and lighter in the colder months. The best place to test a foundation colour is on the neckline, so choose the closest possible match.

Finish with powdering the T-zone and lightly powdering the other parts of the face. Use a compact powder if you would like more coverage or a translucent powder for a lighter coverage. Once again don’t over kill on the powder, we want to avoid the cake face look!

HOW TO BE THE ULTIMATE W.G.

Wing Girl

FYI: This is not just about boys, it’s about being a true friend in any situation.

IT’S PARTY TIME

Is your friend feeling nervous before a party??? It’s your job as W.G. to get those butterflies to flutter away. The best way to do this is to give her a plan of attack. You need to decide before you arrive if you are going to sit straight down, or find the first familiar face to spark a conversation with. When you arrive at the party, try and include your friend in conversations to give her some opportunities to join in. Eg. “Stacy really likes that song, don’t you Stacy?” Another great tip is to come up with a ‘SAVE ME’ signal if she needs your help at the party. So whenever your friend does the ‘SAVE ME’ signal, you know you need to get her out of that convo.

BOYS! BOYS! BOYS!

Getting your friend ready to see her crush is a key quality as Wing Girl. It is up to you to make sure that your friend not only looks her best but is feeling calm, cool and confident. You need to help her pick out an outfit that is going to WOW him. Pick out something that she normally gets a lot of compliments on. The outfit needs to have her style written all over it and most importantly she needs to feel comfortable. Run through a conversation starter with her in case there are any awkward silences on the date…then of course be ready for the after date phone convo for her to share all of the juicy stories.

ULTIMATE W.G.

What happens if your friend calls you up and wants to go to a party and all you want to do is lounge around home in your pj’s?? Well, to be the ultimate W.G. sometimes you have to put on a brave face and put your friend’s feelings first. She is asking you to go with her for a reason, so get off the couch, put a smile on your dial and at least pretend you’re having fun. If you are feeling sick and have a legitimate reason not to go, then tell your friend to come over to yours so you can hang instead.

GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!

If a friend is having trouble with other girls and she feels like she is the only person going through a hard time, it’s your job as Wing Girl to remind her that she is not alone. Tell her about times that you have gone through, some hardships with someone else, and remind her that things will get better…they always do! :D Try and take her somewhere that she loves, to take her mind off it. Make sure you stay in communication: calls, texts, Facebook chat - whatever you can do to keep in contact while she is going through the rough patch.

THE WING GIRL CHECKLIST If you tick all of these boxes you are well on your way to being the best Wing Girl ever. If you say you’re going to be somewhere …unless there is an emergency, then you will be there . You will always stick up for your friend even if she is not there . If you are told a secret then you will lock it up and throw away the key. You never ever speak badly behind any of your friend’s backs. You always tell them the truth even if it ’s not what they want to hear.

THE DREAMCATCHER PARIS BRENNAN 13 “Keep working hard! Always do your best at school! Aim high and never give up! Always have fun in what you do!

I

live on the Central Coast of NSW with my mum. I just started high school this year and absolutely love it!! I love having more interesting subjects to choose from. It’s also been great going from a small primary school to such a large college as I have met so many more interesting people and have the opportunity to develop many new friendships. Every day after school I head straight to Lee Academy Dance and Performing Arts to train. I currently undertake all styles of dance classes there, I also train in singing, musical theatre, acting and acrobatics… Phew!! I can’t imagine my life without going to Lee Academy, argh! I enjoy the strict training regime that I undertake, and work hard to better myself. The more skills I can develop in the performing arts, the more this will help me achieve my goals and dreams of working in that industry. Besides my interests in the performing arts, I have a strong passion for modelling!! I take every opportunity I can to gain more experience and confidence in this area. I have done a number of photoshoots, and have been on the catwalk a few times as well. I did a professional catwalk show at The Rocks in Sydney last year which was incredible!! At the moment, I can’t decide which one I like better,

catwalk or photographic, they are both great and I really enjoy both so much!! My highlight though was winning Miss Country Girl Junior at Tuggerah!! It was so amaaazing!!!! Besides winning the crown, it was a great learning experience, confidence building, and I had so much fun while making new friends! Next year I am able to compete in more competitions now that I have turned 13, I can’t wait for the experience!!! My idol is Miranda Kerr. I love her so much! Everything about her and what she stands for, I just love! It is my dream to follow in her footsteps, it would make me so proud if young girls would look up to me the same way so many look up to her. I would love to have a positive influence on young girls. In between my hectic schedule and homework, I enjoy going to the beach and hanging out with friends. We also love to go shopping to check out the latest fashion!!!! Mum says that I was putting my own outfits and accessories together from when I was a toddler. I really dressed myself from then; mum didn’t have much choice in the matter, ha! Well to a certain extent.

Keep Smiling!!!! :D Love Paris xx

5 Facts About Goal Setting 1. Specific, realistic goals work best.

3. Repeating a goal makes it stick.

Start off with small achievable goals that will get you on the right track and will give you the confidence to set bigger goals in the future.

Say your goal out loud each morning to remind yourself of what you want and what you’re working for. (Writing it down helps too.) Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re on your way to making it happen.

2. It won’t happen overnight...It will take time for something to become easy and routine. Your brain needs time to get used to the idea that you’re doing something new. Just like riding your bike for the first time. Be patient and stay positive.

4. Pleasing other people doesn’t work.

boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else tells you to do it.

5. Road blocks don’t = failure. Mistakes are actually part of the learning process. It may take a few attempts to reach a goal, but that’s OK-everyone makes mistakes don’t beat yourself up, it’s part of the process. Get back up, dust yourself off and keep positive.

You are the most important person in your life so do it because YOU want to-not because a girlfriend,

How S M A R T is your goal? Specific:

should ask yourself: Will I actually be able to achieve this goal?

You have to know exactly what you want from your goal and what the ultimate outcome will be. Once you know this you can create the correct steps that will lead you down the right path.

Realistic: Realistic, in this case, means “do-able.” You can’t expect to reach your goals overnight. You must set milestones that you know you can achieve. A realistic goal will push your knowledge and determination but will not break you.

Measurable: If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. When you measure your progress, you stay on track which helps you reach your targets. This will create excitement and motivation to keep you striving for your ultimate goal.

Achievable: You need to set milestones that you know you can achieve in the time frame that you have

Time: allowed. Goals you set which are too far out of your reach, you probably won’t commit to doing. If it’s in the long-term it will be best to set smaller goals that will help you reach the end result. Before confirming you

Give yourself a timeline so you have something to work towards. This timeline can be short or long, the important part is to make sure that it is realistic and achievable.

THE AUTHOR Brielle Thompson “ I absolutely love representing my home town of Stanthorpe and making all my support networks proud.”

I

live in Stanthorpe, Queensland. It’s a great small town full of lovely people, family and friends. I attend St. Joseph’s High School, where I have received many opportunities to succeed in academics, sport and creative pursuits. Throughout my primary school days, performing was one of my passions and unleashing my inner creativity has lead me down many adventurous paths. At age of 11, I entered a short story competition in which I submitted a wild tale about a girl in the bush. It was a few months later that I received the news of it being published. I continue to write poems and short stories. When I was 12, I was accepted to attend the Annual Meanjin Writers Camp in Brisbane, where I was coached by well-known Australian authors Simon Higgins and Sue Gogh. Dancing is one of my hobbies which I have undertaken for 9 years. The end of year concert is what I look forward to the most, being able to dress

in sequins or go all out in a gangster get-up is thoroughly enjoyable, not to mention smearing on thick layers of make up! In grade 5 and 6 I travelled to Goondiwindi and Inverell to compete in dance eisteddfods for jazz and ballet. I have also competed in speech competitions such as Stanthorpe’s annual eisteddfod and the regional lecturette finals. Recently, I participated in Miss Country Girl Australia. Thanks to MCGA my long term goal to launch into the entertainment industry is in sight. Over time, I have been taught that modelling isn’t just about being thin or tall or beautiful but it is also about personality, confidence, enthusiasm, and of course hard work. With the support from my town, school and especially my family, I am focusing my thoughts on a career in the entertainment industry, while continuing my academic studies. You can be a C Girl too!!
