Maria B Dynamics of power dressing
If she is blessed with a good life, she has to acknowledge the land that made it possible and give something back to it. ‘Wakeup Lahore’ was so successful that it turned into a nation-wide movement. hen I met Maria B, she was clad in her new black and white lawn sensation, wearing exquisite pieces of jewellery from her own Mgirl collection and had the aura of a woman who has tasted success after discovering her calling in life. This got me more interested in her as a person than as a designer, because an artist’s personality is what defines their work. Maria’s calm demeanour is reflected in her summer designs that speak of elegance, charm and confidence that can only be achieved if one is at peace with oneself.

So what does it take to have the confidence and level of success that Maria enjoys? Is it the launching and running of five brands namely Maria B Bridals, Maria B Evening Wear, Mafia (cotton wear), Mgirl (western clothes and accessories) and Maria B Lawn; or being the single mother of the most beautiful little creature on earth called Mariam; or starting a movement in Pakistan to wake up the youth and make them realise what the country can offer only if they own it up and start taking pride in it? What motivates a busy designer, who is also
a mother, to take time and money out for a social cause? Maria traces it back to her own childhood. She is the daughter of an Army officer who inculcated in her an undying love for her country and her spiritualism which forces her to look at the universe in totality. If she is blessed with a good life, she has to acknowledge the land that made it possible and give something back to it. According to her she owes it to Pakistan as it is this country that has given her the honour, the space and the identity that makes her who she is today. The movement started with a single event in Lahore. She gathered the youth from universities in Lahore and got Mr Zaid Hamid to deliver a lecture on how and why we should have a positive attitude towards completing the mission that started with Allama Iqbal’s dream. The event named ‘Wakeup Lahore’ was so successful that it turned into a nation-wide movement. Today around 20 universities from all over Pakistan are part of this movement and Maria, with the support of her friends including Ali Azmat, Shehzad Roy, Fariha Jamshaid and Faiza Ansari is most enthusiastically leading it. Ary television also got

involved as a media partner. There are many perks of being a successful entrepreneur and one of them is control over one’s time. In a world where most single mothers are bogged down with the guilt of being unable to spend time with their children, Maria, despite her endless activities and commitments makes time for her only child. She enjoys being a mother and has no regrets about ending relations with her father. When asked to comment on why is it that most successful women are unable to maintain successful relationships she said, “Men in our country lack confidence in themselves and can’t deal with women who know their worth and are unwilling to compromise on their rights as individuals.” She also blamed women, unfortunately a large majority, who sell themselves short because they dare not violate customs and traditions, no matter how humiliating it may become.
However, unlike most who go through relationship breakups Maria is not pessimistic and is keeping her options open in case she finds a man who is confident enough to celebrate a woman’s successes because according to her, only that person will be worthy of her companionship. That leaves us with the five business ventures. But before we go into that let us tell you how it all started. Maria started her business almost a decade ago with the seed money of two million and within six months the business started giving profit. The secret according to Maria of a good business is very simple: make a good product and price it well – success follows automatically. Hard work is the only tool for success. ‘Men in our country lack confidence in themselves and can’t deal with women who know their worth and are unwilling to compromise on their rights as individuals.’ She also blamed women, who sell themselves short because they dare not violate customs and traditions
Maria even today, when she has achieved what most cannot even dream of, gets up early in the morning and by eight am, she is at her factory which is at least an hour’s drive from her home. She is always properly dressed as she believes that the right clothing and right food are essential to maintain a positive outlook towards life. A woman’s mind and body should always be in harmony. All those who think fashion is frivolous need to rethink as it is very importance in building self confidence of a person. A well dressed person is always more positive. On the way to Maria’s factory as I was going through some notes picked from the internet and since we got lost and had plenty of time to reflect on them, I came across her claim that the label Maria B is all about affordability. Aha, I thought to myself, who remembers this kind of a claim made a decade ago, so I am going to definitely question her about it. But during the interview before I could remember to ask my favourite question Maria said, “As you know I don’t believe in designing for the elite only. My success is if I can increase my outreach and see more and more women of Pakistan wearing my label. Affordability has always been a big concern of mine and remains an obsession.” Well, it is so nice to know that there is someone out there who is not catering to the select few but thinking of the women in general and trying to reach out to maximum number by keeping the prices in check. The obvious query after this is, doesn’t she lose money by not catering only to the class that possesses all the money to throw away on dresses? As we hear that there are families who will spend hundreds of thousands for a label only and Maria easily qualifies to be their first choice. Does this make any business sense? To my surprise her answer was yes, it makes good business sense as she makes a lot of money selling her lawn prints and the fashion line called Mafia. Mafia? Now what kind of a name is that for a fashion label? Maria very candidly told me that it is only an F away from Maria and at the time when she came up with the name there were too many fashion mafias struggling for power so she decided to come up with her own Mafia, she added with broad smile on her face. Mafia is her most profitable venture so far. Mafia offers cotton, staple 21 I January 23 - 29, 2011

Maria admitted that this has been somewhat neglected due to her other more demanding activities but she plans to revive it this season. Bridal wear she said is not the most profitable, as many people believe. She finds it a bit boring also because usually our girls don’t want to experiment with their bridal dress. They want to stick to the traditional colours and but once in a while a bold bride comes along, who allows Maria to design for her differently, and that is where the fun lies for Maria. This has everything from tops, pants, dressers, shoes, bags, bracelets, earrings to corsages, belts, gloves, caps, scarves and socks. Maria gets her accessories made from China and visits the country at least twice a year to ensure high quality and perfect designing. Mgirl was launched last year and so far its sales have already gone up to 50 million. Four years ago Maria ventured into the lawn making business and today she claims to be amongst the top two designers for lawns in Pakistan. She is most proud of her 30,000 collection
of lawn suits that is available at all her retail shops. Maria has 11 shops in Pakistan which is her main target market but she is also popular in the west and caters to the ever increasing demand through an online shop where her products are available. Health
factors for Osteoporosis
W
By Maryam Iqbal
hile it is true that osteoporosis affects more women than men, it is a common misconception that men are not at risk for developing the condition. All people advancing past middle age should identify the risk factors for osteoporosis and consult their physician. Read on to learn how to identify the risk factors of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis Risk Factors for Women 1- An early onset of menopause is a sign that you may be at heightened risk for osteoporosis. Estrogen helps maintain bone strength and menopause reduces the body’s production of estrogen. 2- Bear in mind that you are at an increased risk for osteoporosis if you have had breast cancer, particularly if you used anastrozole, letrozole and or exemestane to treat it. 3- Remember that women are much more likely than men to develop osteoporosis. Their bone densities are thinner to begin with, even when healthy. Women over 50 should be screened for bone density loss.
Osteoporosis Risk Factors for Men 1- Monitor other risk factors with added caution if you have low levels of testosterone. Depleted or low testosterone levels have been linked to the development of osteoporosis in men. 2- Use of anabolic steroids greatly increases your chances of contracting osteoporosis later in life. 3- Keep in mind that in populations aged 75 years or older, osteoporosis is just as common in men as it is in women.
Osteoporosis Risk Factors Common to Both Sexes 1- Take your racial heritage into consideration. People of Southeast Asian origin are much more likely to develop osteoporosis than people of other races. 2- Identify any genetic risk factors. The risk of developing
osteoporosis is thought to be hereditary, at least in part. If anyone in your family has or had osteoporosis, you are at an increased risk. 3- Consider your calcium intake over the course of your life. If it’s unusually low, you are at an increased risk for the bone degeneration symptomatic of osteoporosis. 4- Get up and exercise. Doctors identify physical inactivity as bringing an elevated risk of developing osteoporosis along with it. 5- Cut down your alcohol intake, smoking, caffeine and soda consumption. While the exact link between smoking and bone loss remains unclear, statistics suggest there is a strong correlation. Caffeine and soda both weaken bone density and should be consumed in moderation. 6- Understand that a number of other chronic conditions have also been linked to elevated risk of developing osteoporosis. Chronic depression, anorexia and bulimia are all believed to heighten a patient’s risk of contracting the disease. JANUARY 23 - 29, 2011 I 36

THE
problematic narratives
of popular cinema
R
By Urooj Zia
ape is not something to smile about and women will rarely – if at all – fall in love with lufungas who harass them on the streets. But ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’, which is being billed as a harmless comedy, actually promotes quite the opposite. The movie bases its central romance on a conman who tries to woo a visiting photographer with increasing levels of what can only be referred to as vile sexual harassment. He starts off on the street while she shops for groceries, by extending unwanted offers for lifts on his bike; then on the banks of the Ganga; finally going so far as to visit her house with ‘friendship’ cards. The result? The heroine falls in love with her stalker. The movie also boasts not one, but two ‘item numbers’. While repugnant in their portrayal of women, as are all ‘item numbers’ by their very definition, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ goes several steps ahead. A couple of minutes into its very first song, the dancer is tied up in a scene that the choreographer assumed would parody rape scenes from Indian movies of the 70s. But instead of poking fun at bad cinematography and direction, the smile on the dancer’s face, as Dharam pa ji (played by Dharmendra) wraps a whip around her waist, ends up mocking rape survivors in a manner that is beyond offensive. Paramveer Singh Dhillon’s (Sunny 40 I JANUARY 23 - 29, 2011
Deol) mother, played by Nafisa Ali, and known throughout the movie only as ‘Maa’, is shown to pine for her conman, runaway husband for decades, even after moving to Canada and bringing her elder son up as a single parent. ‘Maa’ apparently neither deserves a name, nor an identity except that accorded to her by her relationship to her husband and sons. Another similarly ‘face-palm’ moment comes later in the film, when absentee, philandering father Dharam tells Paramveer that he is not worthy of his ‘mahaan’ wife (and he darn right isn’t!), and the son turns around and tells him that for ‘Maa’, Dharam still means ‘everything’. Staying in an abusive relationship is apparently something to be encouraged. But YPD is not alone in these problematic portrayals of women, womanhood and female sexuality. Entire profitable genres and industries based on the same premise have been thriving for decades, from the Pushto films from Pakistan, to ‘stage shows’ on cable in Punjab, to the Bhojpuri film industry, to name a few. A couple of months ago, a friend in Kathmandu was given flak by other, ‘liberal’ friends for erupting in anger against the problematic storyline of ‘First Love’, a Nepali movie about puppy love and teen romances which went on to be a ‘hit’. The screenwriter did not
see how, among other things, a woman who is raped by her partner agreeing to take him back would set disastrous precedents for young people in a society that is only just beginning to open up to notions of dating before marriage, and where said youngsters look up primarily to local cinema for direction. The screenwriter went so far as to justify this plotline as a supposed ‘requirement’ for a largely lower-middleclass and middleclass, largely male audience. Perhaps reviewers who fail to pick

up on these points, think, as do several consumers of such movies, that the narrative portrayed on screen is not to be taken seriously. In an ideal world, that would be true (actually, in an ideal world, such tripe wouldn’t be produced, but let’s set that discussion aside for now). In the misogyny that surrounds us, however, many unfortunately take these ambiguous morals as a vindication of their own actions, making the lives of women increasingly miserable. Scores of women are followed or harassed at bus stops daily by men on bikes and in cars offering lifts in the hopes of ‘scoring’. Hundreds others are stalked by random people with requests for ‘friendship’ via calls on their cell phones, or obscene text messages, or even worse: by being physically followed around and offered ‘friendship cards’ – an act, among many others, that ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ brainlessly romanticises. As such, these portrayals aren’t harmless narratives shown merely on film. They are fed into by, and in turn feed into, the horrifying reality that millions of women across South Asia face every day of their lives. As a result, not only are they made increasingly vulnerable to harassment, they

‘From Prada to Nada’
Release date: January 28, 2011 Director: Fina Torres Star cast: Alexa Vega, April Bowlby, Wilmer Valderrama, Camilla Belle Genre: Thriller Synopsis: It’s a whimsical fish-out-of-water story of two spoiled sisters: Nora (Camilla Belle), a law student, and Mary (Alexa Vega), an undergrad party girl, living with their father in a luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills. Mary has become so “90210” she refuses to admit she is of Mexican descent. When dad suddenly passes away, their posh lives are turned upside down. They discover they have been left penniless and are forced to move into their estranged aunt Aurelia’s (Adriana Barraza) modest but lively home in the Latino-centric Boyle Heights neighbourhood of East LA. They are terrified to leave their world of privilege; neither Nora nor Mary speak Spanish nor have ever had to take on actual responsibility. The girls gradually adapt to their new environment; their BMW and Prius are traded for the public bus and a used car. As they embrace the culture that for so long they refused to accept, they both discover romance, the true meaning of family, and learn that the life of Prada actually means ‘Nada’ without love, family and community.
Timeless Classic ‘27 Dresses’
A character whose entire life is based on giving people what they want and making their lives special at the expense of living a crappy life herself is what most conventional heroines in romantic comedies aim at doing; hence ‘27 Dresses’. It’s your ultimate unrealistic, predictable, prescribed romantic comedies like ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ or ‘13 Going on 30’. The story line revolves around the not-so-plain Jane who is obsessed with marriages and has spent the better part of her youth being bridesmaid at her friends’ weddings. She spends most of her time pining for her too-good-to-be-true boss George and not giving the sarcastic but devilishly handsome Kevin, who is a cynical journalist, the time of the day. Her selflessness to put others above her own desires also ends up being the reason why she stays silent when her model sister Tess blows into town, sweeps George off his feet and breaks Jane’s heart. The rest is, as they say, predictable. The sassy man grabbing Tess gets the handsome George wrapped around her little finger in no time while Jane and her feelings for George are pushed out of the picture. At the same time, the cynical Kevin is perplexed at finding out Jane’s obsession with weddings and aims at making her the big breakout story for his career. Hence starts a triangle on wedding blues, true selves exposed and loves united. The only good thing about the movie is the brilliance of Katherine Heigl in the character of Tess; she truly lives up to the expectations that the audience had from her after ‘Knocked Up’. All in all, even though the ‘been there, done that’ feeling occurs every five to ten minutes in the movie yet it’s still a perfectly decent rom-com which will ensure that you end up having a good time. here’s this little eating out place in the basement of the Vogue Towers, Lahore. It’s called Burger Hub. Many people are not aware of its existence, for small it is. Initially, it was located in DHA. Later, it moved to the M M Alam Road, outside the Vogue Towers. While the plaza was being constructed in the background, Burger Hub had attracted quite a clientele, including me. Burger Hub has on its menu a range of burgers, wings and filled French-style rolls. It offers three types of wings. The Special Wings are beautifully golden, deep fried in a special batter and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Wings of Joy are indeed a joy to eat – they are perfectly done, crisp and light. Both are served with a dip, and there is a choice of the homemade BBQ, Spicy Salsa and Garlic Mayo. The place has become known for its scrumptious burgers since it opened last April. It offers five different kinds of chicken and beef burgers, with a range of special mouth watering sauces. The Greek is one special burger, with a Mediterranean feel to it. The perfectly done beef patty has a hint of spinach in it, and is topped with Feta cheese and tomatoes. It is nicely served inside a hand-rolled bun. For those who live to eat, there is The Emperor. It is Burger Hub’s very own double-decker burger. Two succulent beef patties, dripping with the special Hub Sauce and topped with two slices of cheese, it is served inside a royal crown bun. The other beef burgers offered, include the Mushroom Melt with a topping of sautéed mushrooms in a sauce and the Stuffed Beef with cheese oozing out of the tender beef. For chicken lovers, The Texan is a must. It is for those who like their burgers spicy and cowboy-style. The patty is
marinated with a combination of twenty different ingredients. It is topped with spicy salsa inside a hand-rolled freshly baked bun. The Mental Oriental offers a whole chicken breast, marinated in a combination of ginger, soya and oriental spices, grilled to perfection and finally sprinkled with sesame seeds. King 4 A Day gives your taste buds that royal huge treatment that they deserve. It boasts of two chicken patties, each marinated in a different ingredient combination, and topped with two slices of cheese, dripping with both Spicy Salsa and the Homemade BBQ sauce. Other burger options in chicken also include the Hub Crispy and the Grilled Breast. The French-style rolls and the desi paratha wraps are also quite popular among the clients. All burgers and rolls are served with French fries and coleslaw. The ingredients used are made from scratch, with not a single market-manufactured product. The prices are humble, with the burgers costing between Rs 300-500 and the rolls between Rs 100-200. The place is definitely a try, if you still haven’t had the chance.

Jude Law December 29, 1972 London, England Birth time: 6:00 am Sun Sign: Capricorn Moon Sign: Libra Sienna Miller December 28, 1981 New York, New York Birth time: unknown Sun Sign: Capricorn Moon Sign: Capricorn or Aquarius Sienna and Jude split after he slept with the nanny, but at the end of 2009, the couple worked together and picked up where they left off. The relationship will feel incredibly fated for Sienna; obsessive and compulsive; and she may deal with past rage and anger. She has to be careful around aggression and issues around sex and around getting what she/he wants in a forced manner. Interesting transits overall, but time will tell if this “on and off” relationship will finally commit or if past anger arises and unresolved issues overshadow. Hopefully, all will run smoothly for both; unless they like the thrill of this relationship and then it will be just as crisis-prone as before.
