“S
ome are born great, s o m e achieve greatness, and some become comedians to make the greatness laugh,” said Daniel J Boorstin. Saad Haroon, a Pakistani comedian, actor, and the creator of the first ever Pakistani improvisational comedy troupe Black Fish, happens to be the first Pakistani stand-up comedian to perform in English in cities across Pakistan in his tour titled ‘Saad Haroon: Very Live’. Saad founded and hosts the first ever English Language comedy television show in Pakistan, ‘The Real News’. Lounge had a tête-àtête with this talented young man. Q. Why did you choose to become a comedian?
A. I’d never thought of becoming a comedian in my life. I received my degree from University of Massachusetts in communication. I came back to Pakistan and felt a deep dearth of smiles on the people’s faces. This encouraged me to take the plunge into comedy. I started my career at Open Mic night. The response was beyond my expectations. The next day when I went to perform again, the place was jam-packed and the rest is history. Q. How would you compare it with the serious stuff? A. Well, serious stuff is totally different from comedy. The purpose of comedy is to make people laugh and also to have a good memorable time; you can’t find this factor in serious stuff. Q. Who writes your script? Do you follow a particu-

lar topic? A. I write my own script, mostly on general topics. Q. Do you consider yourself a social reformer? A. No, I have never considered myself a social reformer. I am a comedian whose job is to make people laugh and have a good time. Q. Don’t you think it’s biased using English as a medium and targeting only a small niche of society?
A. I don’t think it is injustice on the account of those who are unable to understand English because as far as comedians are concerned, we have several Punjabi and Urdu ones. But we didn’t have an English comedian and I have aimed to fill that slot. Q. Do you aim to convey any message through your acts? A. I do comedy for the sake of making people laugh. There isn’t any social message hidden in my acts. They are presented to make people forget the serious affairs of their lives and have an enjoyable time. Q. What is ‘Burqa Women’ all about? Don’t you think that it’s a direct hit on Islamic values and morals? A. It is not at all about criticism on Islamic values and morals. It is a very light and burlesque comedy of women wearing burqas in our society. I haven’t said anything offensive about Islamic orders. I have generally defined the image of ‘Burqa’ women that we perceive in our society. Q. Have you done any shows abroad? A. Well, I only perform in Pakistan as a comedian and always try to make Pakistani people smile on the issues that I bring forward. Q. Any message for the youth? A. Spread laughter because life is too short for seriousness.

n these depressing times when good or happy news is an extreme scarcity for Pakistan, a breath of fresh air hit Lahore in the shape of Saad Haroon. We have been inundated with sad news, bad news, brutal news and more. Turn on any TV channel and you can immediately go into depression. Enter Saad Haroon, a stand up comedian from Karachi with his unusual candour and personalised humour to lighten the mood for the Lahoriites. His first performance was at Kinniard College, where he kept the humour circumspect out of respect for the mainly female audience, followed by three nights of performances at the Ali Auditorium. This young man has the talent to hold his audience; he does not have a prepared script but chooses to ad lib with members of the audience picked at random and have an exchange of repartee with them. He does not fight shy of risqué one liners and the audience responds with abandon. He makes you forget that the Raymond
Davis affair might have very serious repercussions for Pakistan, that we are a nation in deep trouble, and that the way out for us is bleak and fraught with misgivings. Instead he makes you enjoy these very shortcomings and a whole lot of others. He makes you laugh at yourself and all the habits and customs that are an intrinsic part of us. Humour on the stage has often been slapstick, bawdy or dubious and hardly ever in English. We have had some examples of clean and clever humour on TV in shows like ‘Alif Noon’ and ‘Fifty Fifty’. But now we can see the growth of young Pakistanis who are writing in English and have made a name for themselves in this medium. Saad Haroon has made his advent on to the stage choosing English as his medium of entertainment. Although regretfully we are losing our perspective over it and tend to take ourselves too seriously, let us learn from this young man who is able to enjoy life and make us enjoy it too.

B-Town?
Nargis Fakhri
Ranbir Kapoor is one lucky fella. His latest co-star in ‘Rockstar’ is Nargis, who is a part Pakistani and part Czechoslovakian model from New York. With Imtiaz Ali at the helm and music by Academy award winner music composer A R Rahman, this Kingfisher calendar model is officially on a roll.
Caterina Lopez
We can think of one reason to watch the Kay Kay Menon starrer and that is Jennifer Lopez’s sexy cousin Caterina, who is all set to perform a sizzling item number in ‘Bhindi Bazaar’. Caterina plays a bar dancer in the film about gangs, who reside in the densely populated area of Bhindi Bazaar in Mumbai.
Puja Gupta
The stunner from Delhi managed to make it to the top 10 at the 2007 pageant at the age of 22, finishing off in ninth place. Her Bollywood debut in ‘Faltu’ is the coming of age story of today’s youth directed by choreographer Remo D’souza and starring Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Jackky Bhagnani, Chandan and another newcomer Angad Bedi. Here’s wishing the movie doesn’t end up like the title when it releases on April 1.
Ariadna Cabrol
While unknown in India, this Spanish actress is already famous in her circle for her bold nude scenes in films like ‘Les Pel cules De Mi Padre’ (2007), and ‘Elios’ (2009), which have lesbian themes. Makes us wonder if she’s going to repeat her bold act for Zoya Akhtar’s film, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, which stars a host of big names like Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Kalki Koechlin and Katrina Kaif.
Aliya Bhatt
Now this is a dream debut for any new hopeful. After all ‘Student of the Year’ has two of the biggest names in Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar - in the credits. Buzz has it that Shah Rukh may play the role of a professor in Johar’s upcoming flick, and the cute dimpled newbie - who happens to be director Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter - is supposed to play the student.
Sarah-Jane Dias
Not exactly a stranger to the arc lights – her debut in films was the Tamil romantic comedy, Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai opposite Vishal Krishna – the former Miss India World (2007) has signed on ‘Game’ opposite Abhishek Bachchan. And going by the trailer of the stylish action thriller directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, and also starring Kangna Ranaut, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill and Shahana Goswami, the film looks very promising. feburary 27 - March 5, 2011 I 39
ALI ZAFAR Powerhouse of talent and inspiration
M
any years ago this young chap in an electric blue overcoat with spiked hair was seen making history on television. ‘Channo’ became a part of our lives forever and so did Ali Zafar. In times to come, we saw him on the biggest billboards and the most colourful of videos, entertaining us all the way. Our kids danced to his tunes and girls had secret crushes on him. What would’ve one expected of this young lad back then. Some rated him as a one hit wonder, others as a flash in the pan. Some gave a verdict that he would fade away in a couple of months. But most loved him and believed he would be a superstar one day. He proved the latter right. What makes a super star? Is it their power to inspire? How does Ali Zafar inspire and what does Ali Zafar represent? Zafar represents hope. He represents the fulfillment of a dream that we all dream of – the dream to inspire. He represents the story of a young guy who made his way up by making sketches, and doing modelling assignments and struggling for years to reach lofty heights professionally. But most importantly, he personifies a very strong value… humility. On the day of his album launch, the way Ali met with everyone, spoke about his old friends and colleagues, and sang with sincerity, was the final nail in the coffin to prove that this man is made of something special. Regardless of the fact that our showbiz and entertainment industry is going through the worst of times, the entire media is flooded with his songs for the cricket World Cup and his new number ‘Jhoom’. He seems to be the only one driving our music industry locally by creating music here, besides Coke studio, and giving us a reason to be proud. Post Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s detention and Atif Aslam depending mostly on Bollywood, the very fact that Ali makes a conscious effort to maintain his presence here in Pakistan by singing nationalist songs to cheer up our team besides releasing an audio album in Pakistan through his own record label – despite starring in a super hit Bollywood movie, ‘Tere Bin Laden’, and receiving Best Debut nominations – proves his love for his people and sincerity towards his work. ‘Jhoom’ seems to be one of his finest works and sets an example as to how an artist needs to evolve with time.

he Oscar nominees for this year’s best performance by an Actress in a leading role include Annette Bening (‘The Kids Are All Right’), Nicole Kidman (‘Rabbit Hole’), Jennifer Lawrence (‘Winter’s Bone)’, Natalie Portman (‘Black Swan’), and Michelle Williams (‘Blue Valentine’). The spotlight will be on these ladies who will be expected to look their best because the whole world will be discussing their dresses and jewellery. But let’s pause and rewind for a bit, so a flashback can shed some light on their prior best dressed moments. They say judge a lady by her best outfit; let’s see if any of these leading ladies can glam the Oscars 2011 red carpet yet again! It was refreshing to see Jennifer in a gorgeous Marc Jacobsdesigned frock on the 68th Golden Globe Awards held this January. The gray and black ruffled number looked darkly elegant. She paired the dress with amazing emerald Chopard earrings and an embellished Judith Lieber clutch. Jennifer ‘s film ‘Winter’s Bone’ is about an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl who hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. Michelle Williams shone in this stunning egg yolk Vera Wang gown. The dress is bold, bright and unconventional. Her red lips and prefect porcelain skin made this look the best of 2006 Oscars. Michelle’s film ‘Blue Valentine’ centres on a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.

ands reflect a woman’s personality. Many women go for the French manicure because of its simplicity and polish. For this manicure, your should first clip the nails of both hands, file them and apply cuticle cream. After that dip both hands in a bowl of hot water infused with Dettol and shampoo. Dab both hands softly with a towel and then remove the dead cuticles with the help of an orange stick. Apply scrub on the hands and again dip in water to remove dead skin and dirt. After that massage the hands to relax them. Apply base colour on the nails and then use the topcoat to give a shine. Before By Sahar Iqbal

By Shahbano Khan Who knew we’d live to see a day when politics and fashion could go hand in hand. We all know about the buzzing speculation regarding First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe in the land of the States, but Euro land has a much different story altogether with a slight hint of rivalry between Europe’s First Ladies Carla Bruni married to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Princess Letizia of Spain married to Crown Prince Felipe.
Carla Bruni is regarded as the world’s most glamorous woman and has the world press falling under her charm. After her much publicised marriage, the ex model and brunette beauty has focused all her attention in espousing the role of the First Lady of France. Princess Letizia is a royal by right of marriage and prior to that a professional journalist reporting from the frontlines of some of the world’s most hostile areas like Iraq. Her affair with Prince Felipe remained a guarded secret for a long time until the official public announcement in November 2003. Crown Princess Letizia has steadily become one of the most stylish royals of Europe, and last year saw her debut some of her most elegant outfits.
The enchanted gala dinner the Zarzuela Palace took the Paris vs. Madrid feud to a whole new level. All eyes were on President Sarkozy’s gorgeous wife who was dressed in a simple black velvet dress, until- Princess Letizia walked in wearing an eggshell blue satin gown that made her look an epitome of Spanish beauty. Rest assured, this battle ends up being a tie between the two!

In 2009 Carla Bruni finally met her fashion match in front of the world press in Spain where Spain’s ‘21st century queen’ stole the limelight that Carla had been hogging all this time. Both Bruni and Princess Letizia, made the steps leading to Zarzuela Palace in Madrid resembling a catwalk, as the French First Lady and her husband arrived for two days of talks. Carla arrived wearing a conservative navy blue Christian Dior dress with Louboutine kitten heels whereas the Spanish Princess arrived wearing a Felipe Verala dress, with lust-worthy lilac croc heels. It looked like the Spanish side won the battle on this front!

ultiple lawn brands have started bombarding us with their myriad billboards of their new designer lawns. It all started with veteran designers like Rizwan Beyg and Shamaeel designing lawn for mass consumption decades back. At that time, the Pakistani woman was not aware of style staples. For an average woman Sitara Sapna, Al-Karam and a few other brands were the only lawns available. Had she been told that Rizwan Beyg’s signature lawn is available at Tariq Centre, Tariq Road, or Uzma Arcade, she would have innocently asked, “Rizwan Who?!” Now every woman knows when Vaneeza, Junaid Jamshed, Crescent, Mausummery, Asim Jofa or Yahsir Waheed are planning their lawn exhibitions and would be utterly excited at the prospect of checking out Nadia Hussain’s debut lawn collection.
Maria B is coming up with 30 prints in ethnic as well as modern designs Nadia has managed to capture the market with not just her beauty but brains as well. First I was a fan of hers as a model, then as an actor. Next I fell in love with her shoe brand Fetish as I love big baubles on my flats. And now the lawn! Can’t wait to get my hands on it! Besides Nadia, there are the already established lawn brands like Sonya Battla, Sana Safinaz and Maria B, to name some. And each designer is all set to woo the crowds with their value added ware this season. Maria B. is coming up with 30 prints in ethnic as well as modern designs. Sana Safinaz are keeping their design pattern under wraps while Nadia Hussain has worked up a balanced design palette with something for everyone. “Well we have tried to work on all aspects of lawn designs that appeal to women and personally to me as well. Florals, abstract, woven, keri designs along with some really sober simple ones for the older crowd is what my lawn collection comprises,” reveals Nadia Hussain. Al Farooq Lawn and Gul Ahmed are still amongst the expensive lawns. The lawn rage is on, big time! Zahir Rahimtoola of LABELS talks to Lounge about the setting in of the lawn rage and the fact that quite a few celebs are jumping on the lawn bandwagon… Q. How and when did the designer lawn revolution take place? A. One of the first boutiques to open up was in the late 46 I feburary 27 - march 5, 2011
60s early 70s by the name of Shabis at Tariq Road; subsequently Teejays opened up to mass retail fashion. The first band of designers were Maheen Khan, Rizwan Beyg, Shamaeel and Sana Safinaz, and the rest is history. While textile mills have been producing and retailing lawn for a number of years. If my memory serves me right, Yahsir Waheed was a pioneer in branding designer lawn subsequently a number of designers have launched lawn as their prêt offering for summer. Q. Was it welcomed by the fairer sex considering some of the joras are high priced for a lawn outfit? A. Lawn has become a staple for a majority of women, the queues, the waiting and the fight to get a lawn jora are proof of the demand. Q. Can lawn be made into a formal outfit as that is something still hard to imagine for most women who believe formal can only be in silks? A. The simple answer is ‘NO’. Q. What sets the designer lawns apart from the rest? A. Most of the fabric is very similar, the difference is that the designers have their own unique designs and they have effective marketing and strong branding. Q. Doesn’t it seem every celeb wants to come up with their brand of lawn? Is there a market for all of them? A. In Pakistan we have ‘a lot of sheep’ mentality, if one person is successful in a certain area of business, there is a band wagon that follows. Pakistan is a highly populated country with a huge female population hence there is a huge market. However at the end of the day it is the quality of the fabric, the design sensibility and the branding that create successful sales. If these elements are missing it could lead to huge financial losses.
“Florals, abstract, woven, keri designs along with some really sober simple ones for the older crowd is what my lawn collection comprises,” reveals Nadia Hussain.

Attention to Detail Most men don’t think about trendy belts when they’re putting together an outfit, and that’s a shame, because belts are more than practical - an accessory that ties a look together. Every man must have a good leather belt in his wardrobe. This trend never dies. You can try a cotton belt for daywear or lightweight clothes but a good leather black belt is necessary for a formal function, or just evening wear in general. By: Sahar Iqbal
