Endless summer
T
he past week has had some beautiful weather in Lahore. There have been fabulous breezy nights and some gorgeous cloudy moments during the day. Just when you think it is about to rain though, the sun comes right back out to remind you of the endless summer that is just around the corner. 8 months of blistering heat accompanied by our very old friend, Uncle Loadshedding. He is exactly like that family member that everyone loves to hate and while everyone hopes he will permanently move to some distant retreat in the Caribbean, he comes back every year in full form for months on end. The summer in Lahore can be very gruesome depending on what your living conditions are and how much of a conservationist you aspire to be. If you can afford to have the air conditioners running constantly in multiple rooms of your house, your workplace and obviously your car, you will only face the heat for a few minutes while you move from one cool location to the other. It is like creating a mini Dubai for your daily routine while you are living in Pakistan. It really brings me to the obvious conclusion that discomfort caused from extreme weather is only caused in developing countries whereas in the first world no matter how cold or how warm it gets, the infrastructure is there to assist you in combating the weather. There is
central air conditioning in almost every part of Dubai and the cost of electricity is considerably cheep considering residences and apartments need to have air conditioning on constantly. A place like Montreal has a fully heated underground walkway system where one can travel multiple blocks on foot avoiding the unbearable cold and eventually enter into their desired location, which has central heating also. It is the infrastructure for temperature control in public places that makes all the difference in how much extreme weather conditions affect us.
spaces, mist fans, cost of electricity and load shedding, I am forced to reevaluate and prepare my strategy for the gruesome summer that is just around the corner. Since most of us wont be jumping suddenly into higher income brackets, the one thing that can make it all more comfortable is the right wardrobe for this kind of atmosphere. Sadly, dressing according to the season is something I see so many Pakistanis getting wrong. Just because you are in an air-conditioned environment most of the time, does not make it okay to wear very dark colours or your favourite black when it is blistering hot outside. Trust me, you don’t want to be the person in the room who is attracting all the heat (which is what dark colours do) and is like the walking talking furnace burdening the AC with more than it is already facing. Whites, earth tones

Considering the current circumstances of Lahore regarding centrally air conditioned public
and pastel shades are ideal for any skin tone during the summer. People with lighter skin tones can experiment with pastel shades more whereas a darker complexion is complimented with contrasts that are created when wearing stark whites and beiges. Another thing that is an absolute fashion disaster, is wearing synthetics and polyester mixed fabrics. One would think that Pakistan being one of the biggest producers of cotton in the world would have its local people realizing the value of this commodity and understand its benefits when it comes to summer clothing. It is criminal to wear shirts or kameezes that have a blend in them during the summer seasons. The lawn brigade is testament to the fact that designers are giving women a barrage of options when choosing pure cotton fabrics for stitching their summer ensembles. There is no deodorant, perfume, or
cologne that can extinguish the body odor that is generated while wearing synthetic fabrics in the summer. Furthermore, since we are a country where a lot of people still believe that perfumes and colognes
If you feel patriotic and want to do some public service, make deodorants a necessity similar to tooth paste are a substitute for deodorants, I have more faith in convincing them to wear pure cottons and linens compared to challenging their delusional notions of smell. Unfortunately, we have a huge
population that looks up to Salman Khan and his tight, bright silk shirts, which perpetually have sweat stains every time he gyrates those hips on national television. He like most Pakistanis is oblivious to the fact that muscles don’t compensate for bad body odor and “eau de Naturale went out of fashion in the 18th century. So if you are not planning to move, go on an extended vacation or signing a huge business deal that buys you a personal butler who turns your AC on every time he spots a single bead of sweat, please invest in the correct summer wardrobe in terms of fabric and colour. In the process, if you feel patriotic and want to do some public service, make deodorants a necessity similar to tooth paste. You will be surprised how much effect it can have on everyone around you. A nation smelling good and looking great has the potential of being grand.

P
almists, astrologers and fortunetellers are always considered an important part of society. I was always curious to know the reason behind their success and why so many people visit them to find out about their fortune even though it may be forbidden in our religion. In this quest, I came across three famous personalities: Maryam Aftab, ‘the famous Taro-card reader, Mr A Z Chaudhry who is commonly known as Mamoon and Komal Tariq, the palmist. When I visited Mariam, I was already bristling with questions. Mariam Aftab: Taro card reader “I was interested in Taro and palm reading since my childhood. I did my degree in child psychology and photography from California. I met a Taro-card reader who told me that I had a good sixth sense. He advised me to enroll myself in a college which was famous for taro-card reading. I took his advice and learnt Taro-card interpretation. I came back to Pakistan and started my own photography studio but later on when my Taro-card reading became famous and worthwhile for our society, I continued my journey in that field.” Is sixth sense something like having hallucinations?
34 I April 17 - 23, 2011
Hallucinations are related to Schizophrenia whereas sixth sense is something completely different and any sane person can possess it. What is your healing centre all about? Our lives are very stressful, full of anxiety and angst. Every other person needs guidance. Mariam Healing Centre is an institute that offers self-help services and counseling for children and adults. This is the only institute that deals with the psychology along with the taro-card reading. We also offer colour therapy, Reiki, meditation and Neuro Linguistic Programming for the welfare of depressed people of
We do horoscopes by spreading Taro cards. But it deals with the state of affairs of the forthcoming week. I have always given Allah’s name for meditation that guides people in a better way
our society. We arrange workshops to promote the meditation of Allah’s names, which has a soothing effect. What kind of cases come to you for help? There are different types that come here for assistance. They belong to various social circles with varied problems, from weight gaining/losing issues to diverse household tensions. Young girls are troubled by not being able to find a good spouse. They need a hand that can help them overcome their depression and anxiety. In our religion predicting someone’s future is considered ‘Haram’, how you can justify taro-card reading?
God knows about life and death and we cannot predict it. Many people told me that it’s ‘shirk’ and it made me quite nervous. I went to different people and asked them to do ‘Istikhara’. It was quite helpful as the answer was positive. I don’t only deal with future predictions but help people is many other ways. Is horoscope all about knowing and predicting future? We do horoscopes by spreading Taro cards. But it deals with the state of affairs of the forthcoming week. I have always given Allah’s name for meditation that guides people in a better way. Any predictions about some famous personality that might have come true? I went to a programme at Geo; they asked me a question about the future prime minster. They put me under the spotlight and there was no way to escape as the show was a live broadcast. I tried and the initials Z and A came into my readings. Zafarullah Jamali became the prime minster of Pakistan followed by Shaukat Aziz. Will Imran Khan become the next prime minster of Pakistan? His chances seem quite dim. Message for those who believe in predictions and horoscope? Fate puts us into a situation but free will gives us a choice of how to deal with the situation. Our free will determines most of our fate. Some things can’t be controlled, like birth or death but you can use your free will to make your fate play differently, or you can use your free will to have a different outcome. My next visit was to the famous horoscope reader Mr Abdullah Zafar Chaudhry aka Mamoon. My conversation with this Mamoon, whose looks suit his profession, was brief yet crisp. I came to know how many hardships you face to become a professional to make sound predictions. He told me that he spent 30 years in studying signs of stars. My curiosity led me to discover his journey that has made him ‘the man who could see the future’.
How did you get into this field? I was born in a Rajput family in Panipat, India. I started developing the knack for astrology at a very young

age. I was around eight or nine when astrologer Pundit Raghunandan in Delhi became a fascination for me and I visited him often. In 1947, I migrated along with my family to Bhakkar. I did my BA from DG Khan and enrolled myself into the LLB but could not continue with it. I shifted to Lahore in 1983 and taking astrology as a vocation. Did you get any formal education in this field? No, certain prominent teachers guided me and I studied under their
shadows. In Pakistan this field is not well established, therefore, no particular institution is made for studying it. In India there are many institutions that offer this study and I learnt the craft from some pundits as well. After that it was just my own research and hard work. What sort of cases comes to you for help? There are people who have social and moral issues. People with financial problems come to me. Some people face problems in their marriages and some students also seek help from me about their future career options. Islam has forbidden us about future prediction, how do you justify your work? The Quran says, “He has made the night and the day subservient to you, and the sun, the moon and the stars, all subject to His command. There are certainly signs in that for people who use their intellect.” And these signs have hidden meanings in them. We only discover and study the indications and signs that are hinted at by divinity. On the other hand I must say that Allah is the only one who knows the future. Which sort of horoscopes do you study and follow? I have spent thirty years in studying this field. I have also studied numerology. Horoscopes are of two different types: Indian and Romanian, I follow the Indian Horoscope. Is a Horoscope all about predictions and future telling? A Horoscope can tell about your past, present and future. The stars are indicators; they cannot do anything more as God is the only creator who can do everything. Any of your predictions about famous people that came true? My famous prediction was about Benazir Bhutto. I made it in one of Geo T.V’s programmes ‘50 Minutes’. I predicted about the tsunami in 2004 which was true. I also warned about the disastrous earthquake that hit Pakistan in October. Can you make any predictions April 17 - 23, 2011 I 35
about the future of Pakistan and Imran Khan? You are asking me this question when economically we are considered a doomed nation but this year seems like a year of revolution and I am sure that many positive changes are on their way. Secondly, Imran Khan can make
say and what the difference is between the two). What kind of cases come to you for help? The males come for help with financial issues and the females mostly about crisis in their marriages. I have also cured those who are in the pits of
The palmists can only predict future. They can never change it. It is God’s hand that can make the impossible, possible his way as a new label of revolution this year. Any message for our readers? Don’t believe in predictions entirely as they are mere study of signs and indications of the stars. You cannot rely on them as actions make predictions come true or false. Palmistry is another field that has made me inquisitive. I stopped by the house of famous palm reader Komal Tariq. She is not just approached for palm reading by large number of people here, but from many places abroad as well. How did you get into this field? I was interested in this field since childhood. This knowledge and sixth sense was inborn. I went to India and one of the pandits noticed this in me and predicted that I would be famous. I could make predictions at a very young age. I felt really good when people came to me for help. I have spent 29 years in this field. It is rumoured that you have got some supernatural being that helps you? I feel irritated when people criticize me for having a supernatural being to help me. I read their palm lines. I don’t have any ‘Jinn’ but I possess a ‘Moakkal’ who sends messages to my brain. (I fail to understand what she was trying to 36 I April 17 - 23, 2011
depression. Any predictions about some famous personality that might have come true? One of my famous predictions was about Nawaz Shareef and his future in the Parliament. He was selected as Prime Minister twice in the 90’s decade. Will Imran Khan become the next prime minster of Pakistan? I can’t say about his future, but more success and glory awaits him. In our religion predicting someone’s future is considered ‘haram’. Your comments? The palmists can only predict future. They can never change it. It is God’s hand that can make the impossible, possible. I mostly deal with the problems of people because I believe in helping the needy by praying for them. If you foresee bad fortune in somebody’s future, do you tell that person bluntly? I cannot do that because it will definitely lead people to anxiety. There are certain ways in which I tell them about ill fortune, I warn them beforehand and give them Quranic
ayats to recite. Prayer can change a man’s fate. A message for the readers? In the last decade I have seen impatience in our new generation. Determination, hard work and patience can lead you to success.
The quest for hope
Why do people believe in astrology? The answer to the question lies very much in the same realm as why people believe in just about any superstition. Astrology offers a number of things which many people find very desirable: information and assurance about the future, a way to be absolved of their current situation and future decisions, and a way to feel connected to the entire cosmos. In a sense, astrology does work. As practiced today, it can work quite well. Most of those who visit an astrologer end up feeling satisfied. It is not that astrology has accurately predicted the future, but visiting an astrologer can be a fulfilling experience.
Astrology and Islam Keeping in view the Surahs of Quran, these practices are considered sinful as is stated, “Say: None in the heavens or earth knows the unseen except Allah.” [Soorah an-Naml 27:65] Not only is the practice of astrology Haraam, but also visiting an astrologist and listening to his predictions, buying books on astrology or reading one’s horoscope are forbidden! One who seeks his horoscope comes under the ruling contained in the Prophet’s statement: “The Salaah (daily prayer) of whoever approaches a fortune-teller and asks him about anything will not be accepted for forty days and nights.” Allah has clearly stated: “With Him are the keys to the unseen and none knows it except Him” [Soorah al-An’aa,m 6:59].

HSY: May the best lawn win
I
By Sumeha Khalid t seems as if no feat is magnanimous enough for our supremely talented and determined designer Hasan Sheheryar Yasin to achieve. He has done it yet again with branching out into lawn. HSY’s prints took the lawn fever to a new level altogether, when women in various cities, made his exhibitions overwhelmingly successful.
Tell us about ‘The World of HSY Prints’ Our debut collection of luxury lawn prints is now available for retail through exhibitions and at fabric outlets. This collection takes inspiration from my travels. You can see a piece of HSY’s brand philosophy of timeless elegance in every print, bringing our acclaimed couture sensibility to lawn prints. What kind of designs are there in your lawn collection? It is a diverse assortment of prints present in each ensemble, allowing the consumer to mix and match instead of remaining confined to a single print outfit. As our male clientele is increasing, we are also including specific unisex cotton prints. What is different in this collection? The collection is a celebration of self expression, striking a balance between tradition and experimentation where our designs mirror the emotions, cultural heritage and characteristics of the modern Pakistani woman. Is the lawn your baby or are you working in partnership with some group? I am designing my lawn myself. What is that extra that HSY offers? The cornerstone of the design philosophy at HSY is what gives it a definitive edge and enhances its appeal to an ever increasing clientele that has an appreciation for the grandeur and extravagance of a regal past but expect innovation and creativity. This is exactly what a customer will get from us.
38 I April 17 - 23 , 2011
At the end of the day, the best quality and price will reign supreme Why specifically lawn? Having successfully launched couture, resort and prêt lines over our decade long history in fashion, we felt it only natural to extend our repertoire to Pakistan’s more wearable fabric. Do you think there’s enough room for all the lawn brands that are coming up as of late? There’s always room for that which is new so long as it stays fresh and creative. What’s your take on all the designers jumping in the lawn bandwagon? I wish them all well. The more diversity for the consumers in terms of design and price range, the better. At the end of the day, the best quality and price will reign supreme. Don’t you think most of the designer lawn joras are high priced considering it is lawn after all? Deisgner lawn is by its nature high end fabric so to this end is more expensive than normal textile produced lawn. Also, this year particularly, given the state of electricity and gas shortages, the costs of production have risen exponentially for all textile mills. That said, we have ensured The World of HSY Prints remains more affordable with a starting price range of 2500 rupees. Can lawn be made into a formal outfit? It’s all about what suits you, be it be lawn or silk as long as you can make it stand out.

Acne away

hen we talk about skin, we normally take it for granted that its strictly female territory. I decided to investigate this preconception by taking out a day to stare solely at boys’ faces. Mind you I’m no stalker nor do I belong to a marriage bureau. I’m just a person simply trying to make everyone’s lives a bit simpler. While spending a day undertaking my secret detective task didn’t help me much in locating a soul mate; it did however help to enlighten me to the problem of acne! Yes, we’ve all heard it before and we’ve all had it and let’s face it, we all dread it. First of, acne is a very common skin condition that attacks everyone. Boys are more at risk, and while girls love to complain, boys have an added pressure on them to act boldly and not fret about trivial things. Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin, called pores, become clogged, resulting in whiteheads or blackheads inflammation. While many of us run quickly to the dermatologist, here are some guaranteed cures that you can practice home which will help you in fighting off acne.

Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. Do not scrub! Pat your skin dry and apply either a water based moisturizer or a noncome dogenic lotion only, which is freely available in any pharmacy. Keep your hair tied back. Do not touch your face with your hands. Drink lots of water, it a sure shot remedy. Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder and apply it on the pimples overnight. Do this for two weeks and pimples will disappear forever! (Not suitable for those who are allergic to cinnamon.)
All that said, do this one final exercise and you will notice the difference in two weeks: stop looking at yourself in the mirror; if possible take all mirrors away from your life for two weeks and do not think about the acne at all. This is a magical remedy, personally tried and tested, but it only works on the condition that you genuinely do it. 42 I april 17 - 23, 2011

Neha Dhupia: Rosie Huntington Whiteley: Hollywood CA USA
Supermodel and actress Rosie Huntington Whiteley does casual chic like no other. While taking a leisurely stroll with boyfriend Jason Statham in LA last week, Whiteley looks utterly stylish. She pairs up light gray cropped skinny jeans with a sheer white shirt and simple black cardigan, but she keeps this look from being too basic by adding a brown trilby, a gorgeous tan suede shoulder bag and kitten heel pumps. Gotta love the supermodel style!
It is refreshing to see people making a statement on the red carpet at fashion events in Pakistan. Hiba Sher, consultant for PFDC Fashion Week, looks fabulous in her ensemble. I applaud her for not going the usual flowy kameez/kurta route and sticking to her own style. Her gold top is paired with a printed paisley jacket which is to die for. Skinny jeans, shiny almond-toe pumps and a delish Dior Lady bag complete this very chic look.

Veranda Bistro offers a delightful Sunday brunch – a must try for all foodies!

ustling with activity on a Sunday morning, Veranda Bistro is attracting sizeable crowds for its brunch, and it’s not just for its very classy and extravagant Mediterranean dining setup. Rapidly soaring in popularity, Veranda’s brunch offers just the right variety to choose from. The carefully selected menu reflects the good taste of Kamran Sheikh, whose brainchild Veranda happens to be (under his belt, he has Zouk, OPTP and Gun Smoke to name a few). Starting from a creamy thick Asparagus Soup, (the other choice is Cream of Mushroom, not as good as Asparagus though) served with freshly baked Hot Foccacia bread, this brunch comes highly recommended. The starters laid out for you, include Smoked Salmon-Cream Cheese on Toasted Onion Bagel, Greek Feta Salad, Waldorf salad and Hummus. The cereals are there as well in case you are suddenly overcome by a pressing desire to go off on a health diet! But the aromas and presentation of the assortment of cuisine available will most probably leave no room for such a temptation. Omelettes come in mushroom and cheese, beef sausage or turkey bacon. Grilled Sole and Baked Fish have been done to perfection. Pasta lovers can have their fill in Vegetable Chowmein and Spicy Lasagne. And then they bring you a slice of Arrabiata Pizza for tasting. Chocolate Soup, Tiramisu & Creme Brulee Chicken, Chicken Jalepeno and Chicken with Cashew nuts. Meat treats await you in Sliced Steak, Lebanese Roast Leg and a delectable Thai Beef Chili -my favouraite but then I’m a passionate Thai food fanatic. Never can get enough of spice! The best thing to eat, Perhaps the best God ever created, has to be potatoes and I could kiss the hands of chefs who know their way around them. So if you feel the same way as I do, then Au Gratin Potatoes are a heaven send. Sautéed veggies can also entice those who remain good children to date and make their mommies proud. And now we come to the most important part of any meal, the one that has been steadily failing to gratify me in most of food joints – the dessert menu. Well great news for all meetha lovers out there, for Veranda presents hot Chocolate soup, yummy Crème Brulee and fantastic Tiramisu. You can also find Bread Pudding, Orange Vanilla cake and Apple Pie, which aren’t the best in town so I won’t sing paeans for them. At this point, when I feel I have served my purpose in stirring up your taste buds and attracting you to one of the best places in town for a Sunday brunch, I feel compelled to warn you of a downside. Reservations are a tricky business. On Valentine’s Day, having already booked a table in non-smoking, we ended up being thrown into the smoking area, which was a total mood-off for
my husband who hates smoke and smokers and anything remotely related to them - yes even a match box or a lighter! That ruined the evening for me. During brunch, a large family, already having booked for one table was made to sit on separate ones, which led to them creating a huge ruckus in the place. I hurriedly gulped down everything in fear of being asked any time to get up and leave! But then that’s just my luck. I’m quite sure you will be more fortunate! And even if not, remember the food’s completely worth it, which pretty much makes up for anything that might go awry. April 17 - 23 , 2011 I 47
