Breathtaking bags
By Behjat Tahir
Three of the most coveted bags everyone wants to get their hands on
1.
The Chanel 2.55
The Chanel 2.55 is perhaps the most famous of all bags made by any designer. There are two versions: one, which is to be used in the evening; it is made in silk and the one that can be used during daytime, made from lambskin. Chanel reckoned that the modern women needed to have their hands free while attending social functions. Inspired by the straps found on soldiers’ bags she added thin straps and introduced the design in 1929. Coco Chanel infused this bag with her own life. The inner lining, burgundy represents her old school uniform. The quilted diamond pattern on the exterior is believed to be inspired by the stained glass window at her school, jockeys riding coats and cushions in Chanel’s Paris apartment. The most interesting feature of the bag is a zippered compartment at the inside of the front flap. That is where Chanel is rumoured to have stored her love letters in her original bag. The bag originally came with a front lock called “The Mademoiselle Lock” in reference to Coco Chanel never marrying. Since the 1980s, versions can also be supplied with a lock in the shape of a double CC logo, called “Classic Flaps”. The bag in itself surpasses time and its allure will last forever.

Birkin Bag
The status symbol of all bags is the Birkin Bag by the 170-year-old bag maker, Hermes. Made from premium leather, each bag is handcrafted by an expert bag maker, complete with his distinct signature, making each bag different from the other. All the hardware in a Hermes bag has that distinctive “H” symbol as a sign of authenticity. The Hermes Birkin bag got its name when Jane Birkin, a British actress was with the Hermes president and asked to design her dream bag. Six months later, the president presented her with the finished product. Although the Birkin bag is free of logos, it is one of the most recognized bags in the fashion industry and by the public. It is highly coveted and, for several years, was reputed for having a waiting list of up to 6 years – the longest wait for any bag in history. In April 2010, Hermès announced that the waiting list would no longer exist, implying that it is potentially available to all.
Lady Dior Bag
Lady Dior Bag is a timeless classic from Dior. Nothing is more classically feminine than the Lady Dior line by Christian Dior. This bag owes its name to Princess Lady Diana, who received it as a gift during a visit to Paris in 1995 and fell in love with it. Created in a couture spirit, the square, structured carrier in padded and th the stitched leather reflects a number of Dior house codes. The stitching pattern is inspired by the Napoléon III chairs once used by Christian Dior to welcome his elegant customers on the day of his runway show in 1947. Lady Dior’s sumptuous lambskin and crocodile leather and impeccable craftsmanship express indelibly aristocratic style. It has become a unique outward statement of a woman’s status, fashion savvy and earning power. 42 I may 22 - 28, 2011

A simple and tasty cheese and onion dip, great with chips or nachos. For a lighter alternative, substitute the yogurt and cottage cheese with low fat equivalents.
