Men’s fashion trends fall/winter 2011

By Amara Javed Sometimes the focus should be shifted to the men in our lives, why shouldn’t they be as fashionable as us? With more and more men becoming aware of their wardrobes, here are five international trends to be on the lookout for in the upcoming season.

1. Aviator jackets

2. Sporty prep

Burberry brought back aviator jackets in a big way last year, this fall season many major designers have followed suit. Invest in a gorgeous leather jacket with shearling lining, it will last for years and never go out of style.

For years the preppy, allAmerican Ralph Laurenesque epidemic wreaked havoc on Pakistan (you all know what I’m talking about – those polos with the gigantic eyesore horses). For this season, put a spin on your preppy look by adding in sport elements – a pair of high-top sneakers, casual pants or a brightly coloured tee. You will feel and look so naturally chic.

3. Pops of colour

Neon has been huge for women world over; it’s about time the men caught up. Adding in elements of bright, popping colours is hugely popular this season. If you’re not daring enough to don bright orange pants or an acid green sweater, try some shoes or a belt in a vivid hue to offset your outfit and liven up the dullest winter day.

5. Earth tones

4. Leather messenger bags Hands down the chicest accessory for any man – just throw on a messenger bag and you are instantly oozing downtown cool. Luxe leather bags aren’t just for the ladies anymore with Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana and Louis Vuitton all designing high-end products to cater to the men folk.

Military is big, and we know what that means – an earthy, subtle colour palette. Browns, grays, taupes, greens and beiges are perfect colours to incorporate into your fall/winter wardrobe. This works especially well with trend #3 and the addition of bright accessories to jazz up your look.

Fall/Winter Menswear Essentials Invest in a complete style solution this season

F

all season is the best time for menswear fashion in our country. For eight months men are limited to wearing T shirts and polos along with their odd pair of jeans. Men’s Fashion is at its best when we layer our clothes and accessorise them for winter. Layering gives us options in colours, patterns and cuts which are almost impossible during the hot summers in Lahore. The following should be at the top of your shopping list for this coming season.

1. The Blazer If you thought that your crisp white shirt is the most important and reusable item in your closet than you are mistaken. A man’s wardrobe starts with a black blazer that fits him perfectly. Investing in this is of the utmost importance because this staple item is going to work through all your business lunches with trousers and all your GTs with jeans. You can even pull it off with charcoal trousers and a tie as a two piece combination rather than a suit for weddings. Getting a custom made black blazer in a beautiful fabric is definitely an investment you won’t regret for many seasons to come.

36 I September 11 - 17, 2011

2. The Jeans I know we all have a closet full of jeans in every possible colour or some of us have that one favourite pair that we refuse to part with. Fall should mean that you invest in a new pair which is only meant for semi formal occasions- that ‘smart casual’ look. Wearing your day to day jeans at a party with your shirt and blazer is a bad idea. Your day time jeans are the ones that should be worn out, faded, distressed and aged! Your evening jeans should be some dark shade of indigo with a nice gradient fade and a perfect length so that they fall beautifully on your pointy Italian loafers. A new pair of jeans will be a great staple under all your shirts when you are going out this winter.

3. The Italian Brogue Men usually shy away from pricy shoes and go for the cheaper options. I can’t stress enough on the point that when it comes to footwear, spending more money ensures longer life and quality. What’s the point in paying less for something when it starts looking old and unusable in a very short time? You get better value for your money when you invest in a shoe that you can wear for three seasons. A sexy Italian brogue with a wingtip detail in black calf leather is a must have for this winter. Whether it’s under your jeans or formal pants, the shoes that you pick can make or break an outfit. Expensive shoes always scream luxury to anyone who notices them and cheep shoes can be spotted very easily. Whether you find them on a sale or you manage to get a discount, make sure you buy some Italian hand made shoes this winter. 4. The Sexy Sneaker

For all the boys who can’t seem to let go of their sneakers and casual look, there is a solution. Most of the Italian brands do sneakers in black exotic leathers which have a very formal yet sporty look to them. This is something you can get away with on a formal occasion as long as you are wearing a shirt and a blazer to balance them out. Sneakers with a canvas top, your gym trainers, and your day time walking shoes like Puma and Addidas are a no go for any events in the evening. Invest

in a semi formal pair in a sophisticated monotone design. 5. Sexy Socks I am sure that most of you wear socks in only four colours. White for the sneakers and black, grey, and brown for the formal shoes. Wearing colourful socks is a great trick for making a fashion statement in a subtle way. They have the same impact as ties and can be quite unique. So every time you sit down, you can watch the people be pleasantly surprised upon seeing a dash of vibrant colours in interesting stripes and patterns that your socks will reveal. 6. The Scarf E v e r y winter should bring forth a new scarf in your wardrobe. A colourful scarf is a perfect accessory for lifting up a simple outfit. With our mild winters, adding a scarf over your T shirt and jacket will not only keep you warm but also have the same effect as a bold tie under a simple black suit. Try any colourful stripes or argyle patterns for this winter. 7. The Tweed Coat I know most of us have been obsessed with leather jackets for many years now but I think it is time for men to invest in a more sophisticated and elegant form

of keeping warm. A tweed blazer, jacket or overcoat is a winter must-have for this season. It gives the formal polished look and looks great over jeans. Tweed also comes in interesting patterns of checks and herringbones that are very in. A beautiful grey tweed overcoat is classic English dressing at its best.

know most of you associate it with your grandfather’s wardrobe but trust me that it looks very preppie when paired with jeans. The cardigan has a similar effect as a waistcoat but it keeps you warm and comes in many patterns. Make sure you try out a few cardigans this winter and start off with a solid navy blue, if you find it too risky in the beginning. 8. The Waistcoat The waistcoat has been a huge success with a lot of Pakistani men for quite a few seasons now. A tip I have for this winter is to buy a waistcoat that is not in silk or the usual suiting fabric. Contrast waistcoats are the key here. When you buy a waistcoat in a deep shade of velvet or an interesting pattern and pair it with your solid blazer, the effect is a lot more fashionable than the usual three piece suit combination. The added benefit is that you can wear your contrast waistcoat over your jeans and shirt to a party without looking like you stole it from underneath your formal suit. 9. The Cardigan Out of all the different cuts of sweaters this season, I prefer the classic cardigan. I

10. The Belt One of the biggest fashion mistakes is when a wrong belt is paired with a perfectly coordinated outfit. Wearing your formal thin belt with jeans is an absolute disaster. Similarly, wearing your wide, big bucked casual belt with formal trouser s is even worse. E ve r y m a n needs two sets of belts for formal and casual occasions. In addition, they needs to be separated by colour since your leather belt needs to match your choice of footwear. A brown belt with black shoes means you scored minus 100 in your ‘being fashionable’ exam. Wearing different belts is a great way to draw attention away from the fact that you have been wearing the same pair of jeans all along. Write to the author at info@ammarbelal.com

Fashionista Fatima

From the catwalks of Paris to the Fashion Houses of Milan, walking the streets of New York to the boutique lanes of London, Fatima Khan, fashion stylist, designer, graduate of NCA and The London School of Fashion is a self proclaimed Fashionista. Her unique aesthetic sense coupled with her experience as a fashion buyer/merchandiser for various Fashion Houses in London has helped to launch herself as a fashion connoisseur par excellence. Meet her every Sunday and learn what’s hot on the high streets in the global fashion village as well as the season’s must-haves and how to wear them.

Monochrome Make a statement with black and white this season.

This is one of my favourites - I just love the high contrast! The crisp contrast of this classic combination is always in style, it’s classic, simple and sexy. Monochrome is one of the simplest, most chic of looks and never fails to gain attention. Pairing black with white might sound basic, but it is actually tricky. If these are your colours, then there is no better time to wear them. For 2011, monochrome was given a sixties spin on the catwalk with Peter Pan collars and A-line tunics. Burberry, DKNY and Jil Sander kept it simple, while Oscar de la Renta mixed in pattern. Texture in monochrome is also a big trend, so mixing different fabrics in these colours will give your ensemble a lift and a modern twist. Keep your accessories simple and let the opposing colours do the talking.

Runway

Designers played with monochrome trend along with texture (leather piping, mesh insets, massive mohair fringe) and tweaked silhouettes. The monochrome theme works well into the 60s mod look. There were big blocks of contrasting black and white from designers Osman, Peter Pilotto, and Antonio Berardi, or more subtle pieces from Caroline Charles or Pringle. It is fun and fresh for 2011 as seen on the runways of Alexander Wang, Céline and Derek Lam. However, dressing in a single shade from head-to-two can border on bland when styled incorrectly. To optimize the chic-quotient of this trend you need to combine contrasting textures and silhouettes that compliment each other for a beautifully blended, cohesive look. It’s also important to select varying tones from the same colour range and to limit the accessories to maybe one or two strong pieces for a clean and classic minimalist look.

For my Pakistan

Monochrome is such an easy way to get a really striking look; try and find monochrome shift dresses from the 60s or contrast-collared suits and jackets from the 80s. Keep it simple yet striking in black and white this spring. I believe that no girl’s wardrobe is complete without at least one monochrome ensemble. Tying a black ribbon around the neck of a white shirt is one of the simplest ways to start playing with this trend. Monochrome is a bold look that will turn heads, so save it for a smart occasion. If you want to make a real impact, add a bright red lip.If you are unsure about colour combinations, you can always rely on this combination, because it is easy for creating a fairly effortless wardrobe. It looks good on every woman, no matter what her hair or skin colour may be.

Key inspirational pieces

Here are some key pieces from international market so you can take the inspiration and translate the upcoming trends into your outfit: A. Polka dot dress, Jaeger £180 B. Monochrome sweetheart trouser, Whistles £150 C. Ballerina shoes, River Island £18 D. Off white slouchy holdall bag, Topshop £38 E. Monochrome dress, Red Herring at Debenhams £30 F. Fazal Abbas & Fatima

Inspiration unlimited! ‘Fashion photography is not about beautiful models or styling but it’s also heavily dependent on the three elements of light, mood and theme.’ 40 I September 11 - 17, 2011

Profile

picture is better than a thousand words. Photography is an art that has recently developed manifold. A good photograph is a proof of a good imagination. Passionate about his photography Fazal Abbas and his wife Fatima are a team who believe in hard work, combining it with a good eye for their subject. Having done his graduation from NCA in Graphic Arts, Fazal started getting a lot of recognition for the quality of his work. He’s doing freelance as well as being the Art Director for a quarterly fashion magazine. Fatima, who handles marketing and coordination, is also a source of strength. ‘She sets the stage for me and I only have to click and shoot,’ says a visibly proud Fazal. Fashion photography is not about beautiful models or styling but it’s also heavily dependent on the three elements of light, mood and theme,’ Fazal tells. ‘We have to get into the groove and create a mood for the shoot.’ The duo first looks at the collection that has to be shot before finalizing the location and styling. ‘Dark colours look flattering whereas lighter hues overpower the face and make the model look washed out. This has to be taken care of. His portfolio includes photography, styling and coordination for ‘Nishat’ and ‘Cream’ magazine which has lately made a mark. The team is impressed by the works of Richard Avedon from the late 70’s who had a great sensibility for nudes and Paolo Roversi; an Italian who has a certain romanticism in his photography. Fazal owes a lot to his mentor Zubair Ghumman of ‘Nee Punhal’ who motivated him to try his luck in this field. Fazal was nominated for Lux Awards in best emerging talent in 2009. ‘There should be a separate category for each line in the awards,’ stresses Fazal. He is also critical of the models’ attitude as they lack professionalism. ‘Sabeena Pasha, Nadia Hussain and Tooba are thorough professionals but the latest breed is only looking for short cuts and quick money,’ observes a disgruntled Fazal. ‘Today’s photography is all about retouching and correcting and the magic of Photoshop,’ he explains. ‘We turn an ordinary face into a million dollar star.’ The couple is in awe of the veteran actress Atiqa Odho and film star Reema. ‘During one of the shoots that lasted for ten hours Reema did not even pick up her phone once to receive any call and she remained supportive without throwing tantrums,’ Fatima said. Fatima and Fazal are of the view that the strong lobby system in Lahore is creating an environment which is not healthy. ‘These models deliberately fail to give their 100% for a photographer they are not associated with and that becomes a major problem.’ Fazal says that photographers should not be discouraged with the attitude of some of the spoilsports as there is a lot of leg pulling in the system but hard work and persistence will work out at the end. ‘The idea is to keep on clicking and there will be one day when their efforts will pay off just the way his did.’

aving stolen the hearts of many with her wonderful performances in Larkiyan Mohallay ki, Maasi aur Malka, Chand pe Dastak, Mehwish Hayat is a gifted young woman, all set to go places. Her smile, naivety and ingenuity have led her to stardom. Her work speaks for itself and her success is a reflection of how dedicated a performer she is. Lounge recently caught up with her for a talk.

44 I September 11 - 17, 2011

When and how did you start your career?

I was perhaps four years old, when I started with commercials during my summer vacations. I was never allowed to give priority to anything other than studies. My mother Rukhsar, is a TV Actress and has been my inspiration. I always knew I wanted to be an actress, and I guess it really helps when you have someone from your family in the industry.

Tell us about your current projects?

Phir se chand pe dastak and Larkiyan Mohallay ki are my recent dramas. I’m working on some very interesting projects that are in the pipeline and will go on air in the next few months.

Out of all the actors, who were you most comfortable working with?

I have been fortunate to be cast opposite some of the most senior actors in our industry like Asif Raza Mir, Sajid Hassan and Abid Ali. They have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome and have taught me so much about acting.

What kind of roles will you be looking forward to in the future?

As the number of channels has grown so the need to service them with quality programming has also grown. From just being the stronghold of a few, it has now become a proper industry.

Was it better in the 80’s?

In many ways increased competition has now helped improve the quality. But with so much airtime to fill, not all productions are able to maintain a good standard. The 80’s were the heydays of Pakistani Television, when PTV really produced classics.

Pakistan suffers from terrorism; what is your take on that?

It saddens me to see these times. I have for several years been a brand ambassador for the “Yeh Hum Naheen” Foundation which is working to fight terrorism in Pakistan and portray a better image of the country abroad. In my own way by representing Pakistani youth I am doing what I can to help the situation.

Her smile, naivety and ingenuity have led her to stardom. Her work speaks for itself and her success is a reflection of how dedicated a performer she is

I enjoy anything that challenges me. I will be looking for roles that push my potential to new heights as an actress. I hate being stereotyped so every role that I take on has to be different.

How do you define the actor in you?

I am a great fan of Marilyn Monroe and she once said, “I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” I think that is what sums up the actor in me very well.

Do you think you have done your best or is it yet to come?

In this industry there is no saturation point, it is always possible to do better.

What is your take on the Pakistani drama industry?

I am very proud of the Pakistani drama industry. We have very few resources available to us as compared to our neighbours yet many believe that what we produce is as good, if not better. There are some very talented youngsters who are now joining the industry. They are not very professional but they have introduced a fresh approach.

Do you think the industry is growing steadily?

Any brands you have endorsed so far?

I have been lucky enough to have modelled for Habib Oil, Peek Freans Sooper and Chocolate & Lemon Sandwich Biscuits ,Tang, Gul Ahmed, Colgate, Olper’s, Dawlance Cooking Microwave, Dettol Soap and Warid.

How do you take competition in the industry? All competition is healthy competition. It keeps me on my toes and stops me from becoming complacent.

What is your message to the budding actors?

Believe in the power of your dreams and reach for the stars.

Essentials in your bag?

Coco Chanel perfume, some makeup, I Phone and my Burberry shades.

Are you brand conscious or is comfort your priority?

A lot of what I wear on screen is driven by the demands of the character. In my real life I am not brand driven. Yet who doesn’t like designer wear? I love Chanel, Gucci and Valentino.

Your future plans?

I am thinking of entering films very soon. Be it Bollywood, UK or Hollywood. September 11 - 17, 2011 I 45

Film

The interest level and excitement is on the top as the movie moves towards the climax sequences. The out-of-the-blue twist in the pre-climax will completely catch you off-guard

By Kunwar Khuldune Shahid

B

: Same old or something different?

ollywood mathematicians have long sanctioned the theorem that Salman Khan plus X equals boxoffice billions - where X is an extraneous variable, which could range from feet-taping item numbers to a non-existent storyline. Bodyguard is another prime example where Salman Khan’s screen presence is the foremost selling point, with most other facets of the film failing to adhere to a common spine. The recent escalation of brand ‘Salman’ through Wanted, Dabangg and Ready could well be capped off in this movie, before the masses eventually tire of the same old one-man shows. However, Bodyguard’s Lovely Singh is not the archetypal Salman Khan role. Lovely is a simple and devoted bodyguard, who has the ability to transform into something analogous to The Hulk whenever he senses danger. Sartaj Rana (Raj Babbar) appoints Lovely as his daughter Divya’s (Kareena Kapoor) bodyguard, owing to the threat to her life. Lovely dutifully shadows Divya everywhere and eventually becomes a nuisance for her. Divya decides to fake a telephonic romance with Lovely in her bid to distract him away from his snooping dutifulness. Divya’s fashioned out woman “Chhaaya” (voice-over by Karishma Kapoor), sees the honest and straightforward persona of Lovely, and he is mesmerized by her pretentious charm. A few uneventful sequences and a couple of tracks later, the two have fallen in love as the film stutters into Intermission. This is the point where DHA Cinema collectively moaned with an explicit, yet stealthy groan of “Same Old”, as the packed house decided to dig into some more nachos and popcorns – evidently, the more entertaining alternatives. To be fair to Siddique and his crew, Bodyguard does gain something bordering on momentum in the second half. Divya 46 I September 11 - 17, 2011

Rating:

realizes the unfeasibility of the ongoing romance, as her best friend Maya (Hazel Keech) convinces her of coming out in the open. As things unravel, the plot twists and turns and Lovely, who is busy fending off the bad boys, doesn’t get to know the truth at the right time. The interest level and excitement is on the top as the movie moves towards the climax sequences. The out-of-the-blue twist in the pre-climax will completely catch you off-guard, but you’ll locate your money’s worth, typical Bollywood masala seat at the end of it all. The film more than cadges a few waves from Mein Hoon Na, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and especially Ghajini as the story often threatens to go pear-shaped. Bodyguard is primarily a love story, with a blend of drama in the second half and comedy in the first. Tsunami Singh (Rajat Rawail) provides the comic impetus and will manage to crack you up at a few instances. However the comedy is not the typical slapstick-fest associated with Salman Khan Movies. The soundtrack has been received well, but doesn’t rise up to the Ready and Dabangg level. The talents of Mahesh Manjrekar and Aditya Panscholi have been criminally under-used as principal antagonists but Raj Babbar is prominent in his Gupt-esque fatherly role. Kareena Kapoor is usually out of her comfort zone unless she’s portraying a hyper frenzied role a la ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Khushi’, and once again she resorts to overdoing a lot of things in Bodyguard. Salman Khan meanwhile has played the sober and loyal bodyguard meticulously. Finally, the action is a leaf out of Dabanng and Wanted, and is a massive selling point. Conversely though, the film bothers to give water viscosity and pressure as the raison d’être behind the “paisa wasool” shirt stripping act – which for ages has defied both social etiquettes and logic!

Music

By Maheen Hussain Awan

T

he multi-platinum rock band, 3 Doors Down has hit the spot with the release of their new album, Time of My Life. This is the group’s fifth studio album, with which they have profoundly brought versatility. This album shows that the group has indeed grown tremendously after their 2008 hit single, ‘Eponymous’. The album starts off energetically enough with their title song ‘Time of My Life’ with strong lyrics and the usual guitar riffs. The title song underlines thunderous guitars with an ‘I don’t care about the world’ tantrum. It eventually pulls off as a good upbeat rock song. It’s clear that 3 Doors Down do a couple of things very well. They can put out great hard rock tracks, full of energy and a catchy chorus, as is evident from the title track. The more celebrated songs of the album have to be ‘Heaven’ and ‘Race for the Sun’, which end up giving them a radio friendly start for their new album. There is no

3 Doors Down – Time Of My Life controversial rock demeanor the fans might be looking for in the album but it certainly sweeps the fans away, where they can identify with the lyrics. The song ‘When You Are Young’ takes it to US top hit charts, with the hollow lyrics and heart wrenching anathematic tune that make the song one of the significant ones in the album. There’s a lot of a rocker in there,’ Brad Arnold says. ‘It’s really diverse. We arranged (the album) to where it kind of takes you on a ride. I’m just looking forward to people listening to the record as a body of work rather than just tracks.” This album has typical rock songs that have been in 3 Doors Down’s previous albums. They have failed to give any rock hard song like their old ‘Kryptonite’ but have given power ballads, that of the nature of the hit ‘Here Without You’ like ‘Everytime You Go’, ‘She Is Love’, ‘Heaven’ and ‘Back To Me’. Rockers like ‘Round and Round’ and ‘My Way’ are the thundering rock songs that make up the core of the album with ‘The Time

of My Life’. It ends with a heavy, gritty, powerful and almost punk-rock track called ‘Believer’. Although an end like this coming from 3 Doors Down is predictable, but that does not mean it’s a bad album. It’s definitely a must have for 3 Doors Down fans; however, it might as well attract new fans. Overall the band portrayed immense diversity in this album by being able to bring canorous heartfelt ballads with the mix of true thriving rock music, all in one album. This album might just prove to be something all fans will be listening to.

There is no controversial rock demeanor the fans might be looking for in the album but it certainly sweeps the fans away September 11 - 17, 2011 I 47
