The Re-union

I

know every article in the newspaper for the past week has been regarding load shedding and the havoc it has caused in Lahore. I am going to try my best to not make this piece about all the negatives and refrain from my usual rant about the state of affairs in this country. After all, it is our anniversary issue and along with taking a trip down memory lane it is imperative to focus on the positive side of things. The prerequisite to that is the immense effort one has to make to search out this “positivity” that is tucked away behind every disaster that we see around us. I know a bunch of you rolled your eyes as soon as you read the last sentence but give me some credit for trying to embrace the festive spirit that our publication is promoting this week. So here is a summary of what has been happening: While the lights were out, we decided to spend Valentines Day with the Taliban and sent them a bunch of roses asking them to come back for just one more dance since we discovered that they were actually our one true love that got away. Who can forget that fatal prom night in December 2007 after which everything went downhill? I guess it’s never really been the same since they left us standing at the altar. This decision was taken at a colourful high school reunion, which brought forward every relic from past and present- the sports jock, the nerd, the class clown, and obviously the discarded loser who many years later has evolved into the most successful one amongst them. While all this was going on the hot chick in the school that everyone used to lust over threw a hissy fit and

66 I October 09 - 15, 2011

decided to bad mouth the whole school in front of the entire world wearing her iconic stars and stripes bikini. God bless her for being so sexy every time she loses her cool, which is why we are still giving her the cold shoulder. Just when you thought everyone was having a good time at the reunion, the lights went off again. Everyone was so far up in the clouds enjoying their buzz that they had actually forgotten to get fuel put in the generators that had been guzzling away priceless diesel for a while now. How the heads rolled after that as the usual school brawl broke out and everyone started pointing fingers at each other. Another thing that no one seemed to realize was the mob outside the building that had gathered while they were too busy enjoying the last dance. The hordes of people outside had had enough of being the outcasts and never being invited to the “good” parties. After all, what could they do except retaliate against a lifestyle that involves them looking through a glass wall at a completely different world with options, choices and opportunities. With Dengue still flying high and the loadshedding at its

it is our anniversary issue and along with taking a trip down memory lane it is imperative to focus on the positive side of things worst, it is amusing to watch this comedy of errors unfold in front of us. I believe a positive attitude starts with the ability to have a sense of humour in the most preposterous of circumstances.

Worldwide Trends for Fall

W

e just can’t wait to bid farewell to the summer and designers seem to be harbouring a similar sentiment. While throughout the country, people are waiting impatiently for the fall collection to hit the outlets, the world’s biggest fashion extravaganza, known more appropriately as the fashion month, (London fashion week, Paris fashion week and Milan fashion week) has helped fashion analysts narrow down some worldwide trends which are bound to be the biggest fashion statements this fall. So while putting together your fall wardrobe, keep these in mind!

By Nadia Farooq

Now you can flaunt your ladylike silhouette despite being wrapped in layers of clothes as this fall, most of the blazers and jackets come with whittled-inat-the-waist shape

1. Combination trend-Colours

Just because it’s autumn outside does not mean you have to adorn yourself in beiges and black, this year it’s all about clothing pieces and their colour schemes. Here are a few of the trendiest combinations: • Nu Vogue – Olive colour mixed with pale goldenrod is the prevailing chic combination. • Urban Romance - A tale of metropolitan melodrama. Midnight blue and silver, grey shades combined with textured stitching charm gives you a cosmopolitan feel. • Moonstruck - Spellbound and romantically sensual. Greenish yellow tones of nostalgia fused rhythmically with bold saturations of aquamarine and dark sienna. • Edge of night - Mysterious shades of forest green and plum amplify sequined edges and ruffled chiffon. Deep violet shades and silver finishes give an edge to the fabric. Apart from these combinations other colours include dawn blue, blackberry cordial, calypso cordial, mineral green, porcelain, mustard gold, amazon, apple green, mallard green, rifle green. Enjoy the fall and maybe you can try your hand at creating your own unique combination.

2. Blazers, coats and vests

Now you can flaunt your ladylike silhouette despite being wrapped in layers of clothes as this fall most of the blazers and jackets come with whittled-in-at-the-waist shape.

3. Polka dots!

If Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg put the same print out on the runway, then you know it’s a real trend, with a capital T. The trick is how to wear it! Nowadays polka dots come in lots of colours and sizes so you can easily experiment. Add an accessory with polka dots or a shirt with plain pants if you want a more subtle look.

4. A touch of lace

Add a little flirty lace to your look and dress but remember to keep it simple and elegant. When dealing with lace, one must strive towards an appealing and classy look. Lace is just not limited to dresses but can be worked into your look by wearing lace accessories as well.

86 I October 09 - 15, 2011

5. Choker necklaces

Pull your hair into a bun, add a choker necklace and become the fashion diva you were born to be. Do it right and it is style personified, but beware that it is tricky to pull off!

6. Chunky sweaters

There’s no easier way to shop for your closet this season than by pulling on a cozy sweater (the chunkier the better!). These chunky sweaters are an ideal choice for both men and women.

7. Flared pants

Skinnys have been in vogue so long that they were bound to be replaced this fall. Get your hands on some colourful flared trousers. Mind you, as the hem widens so does the trouser!

8. The working girl look

Now you can carry off the 9 to 5 look in the evening with ease. And its here to stay!

9. Shoes

Shoes are as diverse as ever so every woman should easily be able find something for herself. If we’re talking about colour schemes, then the trendiest tones for the upcoming fashion season are: black, white, stone, metallic, beige, burgundy, dark blue, chocolate, deep violet, khaki and red. Bright hues are scarce, which is expected since darker colours are preferred during autumn and winter. This fashion season, both pike and round toes are popular. This means you can stick to your favourite shape of shoe and still be very fashionable.

10. 60’s look

The sixties look is in rage with designers world wide, you can do the same with a pair of stylish gloves or a 60’s hairdo.

Interview

Ather & Shahzad The mighty veterans

T

he story of Lahore’s fashion photography pioneers beings way back in 90’s when some breathtaking photos of the ravishing beauty Zeba Bakhtiar suddenly created a stir in the fashion circles. She was captured in the most innovative manner by the lens of a pair of emerging photographers Ather Zahoor and Shahzad Raza. ‘If it wasn’t for Zeba, we would not have enjoyed the limelight we are in right now,’ admits Shahzad. The crème de la crème of the fashion world instantly recognized their talent and the two young men landed themselves fantastic offers very early in their career. My encounter with the two was an experience to remember. I was ushered into their aesthetically furnished office, which has an air that exudes power. Shahzad who is the talker, and Ather who keeps a low profile sat down to share their thoughts and ideas on just about everything under the sun. 88 I October 09 - 15, 2011

Denying the contractual signing up of models Shahzad explains that certain girls prefer working with them for the simple fact that they deliver on the models’ dream of making it big in the industry

‘People are finally taking fashion seriously, but the downside of the new generation of designers is that a strong element of commercialism has crept into in. The choices in this field are unlimited,’ says Shahzad. An optimist by nature, Shahzad manages to look at the positive side of things and believes that the talent pool is immense over here. If the situation of the country gets better, we can do wonders provided that the government supports the fraternity. Following the cult status; the cleverly gifted partners and winners of numerous awards seem to be getting bigger and better. ‘We do better as we are in competition with no one but ourselves! We strive to get the best results.’ Keen to praise the other fashion stylists and photographers they see great potential for the future but also chose to defend the often repeated criticism that they encourage the practice of ‘camps’ and ‘casting couch factor’. ‘It’s all about the comfort level between the models and the photographer.’ Categorically denying the contractual signing up of models Shahzad explains that certain girls prefer working with them for the simple fact that they deliver on the models’ dream of making it big in the industry. Shahzad sees photography and styling as an integral blend; it’s about creating affinities, he remarked. ‘Remember fashion changes but style is eternal. Don’t follow fashion blindly; the key is to keep your personality in mind before following the trends,’ advises Shahzad. The summer look at Ather Shahzad is minimal makeup with hair tied up while one can go overboard in winters with the use of heavy kajal, smokey eyes, scrunched and open hair. The pioneers of fashion photography in Pakistan are hugely inclined towards international trends but also blend in the desi touch for the Asian skin tones. So what is the signature style of Ather Shahzad and the bridal trends for this season? ‘I always prefer a subtle look for the bride without her looking like a piece of cake, he explains. The look of the bride is heavily dependent on the clothes and jewellery that she is wearing. ‘I am using a lot of reds for lips this season if the jorra is light but the eyes are usually done up with lots of kohl for that prominent dramatic effect.’

Fashion Weeks in Pakistan

It’s a great way to tap the new and established. It is a great idea and a huge platform. One night of a good collection can make a designer. The fashion councils are promoting the business of fashion in the country and ensuring quality.

Fashion Industry of Pakistan

People are hardworking and dedicated and though the industry is in its infancy; it is still regarded as professional and more disciplined as compared to others.

Models

‘Whoever is smart and dedicated can become a super model,’ advises the style guru. It’s difficult to pick and choose one model as they all are professionals and extremely hard working. A model in Shahzad’s opinion is like a canvas. ‘It is up to the stylist and the photographer to paint the canvas, the model however should also understand the clothes and the proper way of carrying them.’

Bridal Season

‘Even though many people have complained about our rates for the bridal season but let me assure everyone that there are no hidden charges. We are open to all and offer reasonable packages to our clients; the input from us is 100% as we are not looking for shortcuts and try to come up with something new every time.’ Reaching the heights of super stardom the duo takes pride in grooming some of the well-known actresses and a huge number of models. Contemplating a jump towards even greater heights, Ather and Shahzad are planning to open up more branches and have got many offers of new ventures. We wish the super gifted duo even greater heights of stardom and success in the future! October 09 - 15, 2011 I 89

Tena Durrani said: Yes, red is the most commonly worn and popular choice for brides in Pakistan. And understandably so, since red is a traditional option. But I don’t think it’s the ultimate choice for brides any more. In fact now brides have started venturing out and I think the most popular choice nowadays are pale neutrals.’ Saim Ali: The eclectic fashion designer Saim Ali believes red is the colour of joy, happiness and love. “I think it will remain the hot colour for brides forever.” Saira Rizwan: Fashion designer Saira Rizwan supports the idea that red is an everlasting trend in Pakistani bridal wear and its importance will never fade away. By Amara Javed veryone needs a reason to celebrate, right? Well, we’re not just giving you a reason to celebrate, but helping you do it as well! Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the first anniversary of your favourite weekly magazine to the max:

1. Treat yourself:

Get yourself one of those sinfully mouth-watering cakes you’ve been fantasizing about. With an array of designer cake boutiques cropping up all over the country, finding a oneof-a-kind concoction is no trouble at all. Le Reve cakes and The Cakery are amongst the most popular in Lahore, with custom made treats ranging from cakes that are decorated to elaborate perfection, to unique delectable desserts that might pose some problems for your waistline.

2. Indulge:

It’s a celebration, and that means, of course, you have to dress for the occasion! We suggest you run out and indulge in a prêt ensemble from one of the many multi-label boutiques in Lahore and make a statement. Stocking top designers from all over the country and across the border, you are sure to get your hands on a unique outfit and will have all eyes on you.

3. Let loose:

Throw a party! Get all your friends together, lay out some drinks and food, turn up the music and just let your hair down and let the music take you over. In the current dismal environment in our country, it’s important to keep your spirits up. Invite other people to spread the joy - as they say, the more the merrier.

4. Make a retreat:

The best way to celebrate a milestone? Escape! Treat yourself to a minivacation to one of Thailand’s exquisite private islands, if you’re a big city kind of person fly over to Dubai and enjoy the electric nightlife.

5. Savour:

Not everyone is a party animal, and if you aren’t one for the noise and crowds of people, go instead for a delicious and classy dinner. Café Aylanto is always a fail-proof option with its scrumptious Mediterranean offerings and the best chocolate fondue on this side of the equator. A sophisticated ambiance makes the dining experience a pleasure each time you visit. Veranda and Chez Nur are other stellar options. 98 I October 09 - 15, 2011

A slew of movies crammed in a weekend

H

By Kunwar Khuldune Shahid

aving dedicated the last weekend to the movie theaters lock, stock and barrel – watching three very different movies in three very different cinemas – one is all wound up, the feeling something akin to having been robbed! Mausam (**1/2) Mausam is an extremely frustrating picture. Not because it’s a terrible effort, but that it could have been oh so better! Set in motion in 1992, the love story spans over a decade and treks around the globe, creating the aura of a

100 I October 09 - 15, 2011

timeless quest for love. However in his stretch for the unprecedented, Kapur conjures up a rubber band of a film – an over-elongated script surrounding a glaring loophole. The movie is symbolically divided into four seasons. Our lovebirds have to ride out all the intricacies, bizarre coincidences, religious divides, communal riots, global catastrophes and just when everything else falls into place the script just wouldn’t give the poor souls a break! Decidedly, most legendary love stories have their quixotic core, but when the lovers in question spend most of the screen time reminiscing about each other and the blooming love is sporadic and portrayed inadequately, the picture is going to fall apart.

The first season is set in 1992 at Mallukot, a small town in Punjab, and is picturized majestically. The developing affection between a carefree Punjabi boy Harry (Shahid Kapoor) and an innocently charming Kashmiri girl Ayat (Sonam Kapoor) is proficiently depicted, and is arguably the most enthralling part of the film. The plot is then interjected by the Babri Masjid incident, and the following seasons would dutifully follow suit with the Kargil War, 9/11 and Gujrat Riots all upsetting the applecart. The other three seasons, set between 1999 and 2002, in Scotland, Switzerland and finally culminating in Ahmedabad, portray Harry maturing into an Indian Air Force Pilot – with events pertaining to his call on duty

cell-phones and the internet were up and running, centring the validation of the lovers’ prolonged separation on lack of communication, makes the movie a self imploding disaster complicating his love story – before the couple finally meet up for good in a reasondefying blazing scene in Ahmedabad. Among other reconsiderations, another historical period could’ve sustained the shaky script better. For, in an era where cell-phones and the internet were up and running, centring the validation of the lovers’ prolonged separation on lack of communication, makes the movie a self imploding disaster – a three hour long implosion to boot. Giving credit where it’s due, this is Shahid Kapoor’s greatest performance to date, overtaking his showings in Kaminey (acclaimed), and Jab We Met (under-rated). Sonam Kapoor does a sound job as well – the casting

for the movie is spot on, even though Anupam Kher is criminally wasted. The soundtrack is middle-of-theroad at best. One can’t help but feel that Kapur wanted to recreate his own version of Dr Zhivago – with the political calamities of the 1990s and early 2000s replacing the backdrop of the Russian Revolution. And, considering the reviews the all-time classic was initially lambasted with, I might actually be helping Pankaj Kapoor’s cause here. Johnny (**1/2)

English

Reborn

Cutting the chase, Rowan Atkinson is clearly the victim of his seamlessly superlative portrayal as Mr Bean. Owing partially to the actor’s limitations and mostly to

the colossal stature of the character in the realm of comedy, whatever Atkinson endeavours to do there is always a Mr Bean hangover – and Johnny English Reborn is no different. The film is not devoid of its comic moments, and on occasions would manage to completely crack you up with its hilarity. However, the screenplay is all over the place and the climax is too cumbersome. It’s been eight years since our last rendezvous with Johnny and the movie opens up to explain that he has spent the last five years in a monastery in Asia, after he was fired from MI-7. After the news of a menace looming over the Chinese Prime Minister breaks, Mr. English is summoned again. English not only has to parry away the threat, he has to uncover a rat from within MI-7 who is forestalling all their moves and his final goal is to locate the three keys designated for a secret box which has the mother of all devastating weapons – a mind-control drug. It goes without saying that Johnny English stumbles around in his trademark persona, scattering moments of laughter – most of which are too familiar and repetitive. The James Bond spoof is funny in parts, and obviously with Atkinson’s antics the spy thriller portion is a non-matter. But things just don’t click. There is nothing new in the film, and one can’t really earmark the movie as one of Atkinson’s greatest showings – and for a film that was clearly going to rely on the Brit to pull out his repertoire – the film ends

up being an anticlimax. If you’re a Mr Bean egghead and would laugh at things you’ve seen many a time before, you could enjoy this one. For those seeking something different – stay clear. Abduction (**1/2) Nathan Harper (Taylor Hautner) has had baffling intuitions, which convey that his life is a counterfeit of sorts, and that he is converging on the unraveling of a mystery. The stealthily ticking time bomb eventually explodes when Harper discovers that his parents are not really his parents but spies who have been asked to protect him. The film is a thriller with as much “thrill” as banging your head on a wall. The script – if one can take the liberty of using that euphemism – is a disjointed mess of complications. And just when the movie cries out for some action – that’s all you’ll get blubbers and whimpers. If you have to choose between jumping off a 50-storey building and watching Abduction, choose the latter but only after giving the matter some serious thought. The movie should come with an R-130 rating, and if there is someone who fits the bill, this is just what might kill them. Die-hard fans of Twilight star Taylor Hautner might want a peek. For others, I have absolutely no clue what you’re doing reading on after the first paragraph.

Top 10

Films of the Year On Lounge’s first anniversary, here’s a flashback of the finest films of the last 12 months

A

By Kunwar Khuldune Shahid

ny Top 10 list is a subjective compilation and therefore there is hardly ever going to be textbook conformity between different opinions. However, here’s my take on the best Hollywood and Bollywood films released between October 2010 and October 2011. 104 I October 09 - 15, 2011

Hollywood Top 10 10. Black Swan (***1/2) Natalie Portman won the Academy Award for the movie, and she completely dominates this psychological thriller which yoyos between lunacy and virtuosity. Black Swan has the potential to enthrall you or creep you out just as easily – I, for one, lean towards the former. 09. X-Men: First Class (***1/2) Comfortably the best installment from the X-Men series since X-2. Michael Fassbender shines as Magneto and the film truly lives up to its status as a blockbuster. Oh, and you don’t have to be an X-Men egghead to acknowledge the film’s quality. 08. Bridesmaids (***1/2) The name and the genre might ward off the male contingent but

rest assured this is a picture for all adults to enjoy. This rendezvous with a multitude of well characterized roles will be joyful – easily one of the best female-driven comedies of modern times. 07. Beginners (***1/2) The movie is constructed on the foundation of interlinked flashbacks. Ewan McGregor plays a man dealing with his father’s death and the shadows engulfing his life and also dealing with a blooming romance of his own. It’s an arousing drama with its fair share of comic moments. 06. Hanna (****) Towering performances by Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana in a gripping thriller with incredible action sequences. Hanna keeps the adrenaline pumping and the intensity high. The chase keeps you on the edge of your seat. 05. 127 Hours (****) A biographical adventure film based on Aaron Ralston’s autobiography “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”, with James Franco doing a staggering job depicting Ralston’s accident filled

Bollywood Top 10

adventure in Utah in April, 2003, when he was trapped by a boulder. The picturisation of the agony, the struggle and the courage involved to escape from that hole is absolutely top drawer. 04. Midnight in Paris (****) Woody Allen’s best offering for a considerable span of time. The setting is Paris, and therefore the atmosphere, vibrant. Owen Wilson gives a startling performance in a love story that regularly cracks you up in emblematic Woody Allen manner. 03. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II (****1/2) To keep it short and simple, the film ranks with the very best the Harry Potter franchise has conjured up and the portrayal of the Battle of Hogwarts has all the makings of being etched into Hollywood folklore permanently. This grand effort concludes the most eminent film franchise of all-time, with a bang! 02. The King’s Speech (****1/2) Colin Firth gives an Academy Award winning performance in a historical drama which is utterly spellbinding. Whereas Britain’s narcissistic observations of its past are palpable throughout the movie, the seamlessness in most areas deserve the highest approbation. Receiving universal acclaim, the film dominated this year’s Academy Awards. 01. The Social Network (****1/2) Any delineation relating to Facebook was always going to be received wholeheartedly, but The Social Network creates a distinctive assortment of drama, fun and distortion of facts that comes out as a riveting paradigm of modern day filmmaking.

10. Saat Khoon Maaf (***) Priyanka Chopra masterfully depicts a husband slaying femme fatale in a film based on Ruskin Bond’s short story “Sussana’s Seven Husbands”. An odd tweak or two, and the picture would’ve been a groundbreaking masterpiece – nevertheless it’s still a gallant effort by Vishal Bhardwaj. 09. Bodyguard (***) It’s all about cashing in on Salman Khan in Bodyguard. Decent music, sufficient family entertainment, and a proper doze of action and while the man himself gives a sterling performance the script has enough wobbles to tarnish the overall execution. 08. Tanu Weds Manu (***) Simple and lighthearted with the backdrop of shaadi and baraat – the film draws on its atmosphere and a commanding soundtrack to round off a sufficiently entertaining flick. And, in Jimmy Shergill and R. Madhavan the film boasts two of the most underappreciated actors in Indian Cinema. 07. Zindagi na milegi dobara (***1/2) Just like Dil Chahta Hai a decade back, ZNMD impacts the upper echelons of society – and that is not where the uncanny resemblance ends. However there are superlative acting performances, cinematographic appeal – courtesy Spain’s exotic locations – and moments of adventure to make this road film an enjoyable watch. 06. Murder 2 (***1/2) A dark gory thriller – Prashant Narayan deserves an ovation for his exceptional portrayal of a psychopath serial killer, and Emraan Hashmi deserves acclaim for not ruining the film – despite his excessive efforts to do the same. 05. Singham (***1/2)

Singham is a quintessential Bollywood film, with all the action and masala of the 1970s – the halcyon days of the ‘Angry Young Man’ films. Ajay Devgan expertly plays an honest policeman in a typical good vs. evil tale, and both the protagonist and the movie make an instant impact. 04. Dum maaro dum (****) An enthralling crime thriller, set amidst ongoing drug trafficking in Goa, that keeps one engaged till the final disentanglement. While the script appears to fade away in the middle, it’s all worth the wait after everything is finally unraveled. 03. Golmaal 3 (****) While the pseudo intellectuals generate skepticism, the Golmaal franchise continues to make its mark in comedy. The film promises laughter and delivers it emphatically, culminating in 155 minutes of pure entertainment! 02. Aarakshan (****) An engaging socio-political that not only asks a few imperative questions, but manages to answer them convincingly. Aarakhsan, a story highlighting caste discriminations and the reservations based on social divides, extracts powerful performances from an illustrious cast – with Manoj Bajpayee deserving special acknowledgement for yet another brilliant exhibition of seamless acting. 01. No one killed Jessica (****) The movie is an emotional hard hitter that leaves a profound print. Based on the infamous Jessica Lal murder case – a blatant crime with scores of witnesses and yet the culprit manages to dodge the bullet with ease – that generated hue and cry in India. The film blends creativity into facts, with Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan justifying their tags of being two of the most consummate actresses in Bollywood. October 09 - 15, 2011 I 105

Jewel Tones Autumn is in the air! That means the weather is changing slightly and soon you’ll be getting ready to attend a barrage of weddings. 2011 collections have already been making splashes, featuring all the hottest and latest head-to-toe trends. Fashion’s palette has moved on from summer’s acid brights and paint box pops of colour into the opulent realm of royal jewel tones for Autumn 2011. Tones like jade, amethyst, sapphire, emerald, ruby, quartz, garnet, topaz, opal, lapis lazuli, verdite, and citrine have the power to make you feel a royal, rich and sophisticated. While there was plenty of black to be seen on the catwalks, it was speckled with striking colours that dazzled in their desirability, just like real life gems. This trend is perfect for the festive season ahead.

Runway

Almost all designers followed this irresistibly royal trend and runways were crammed with these rich tones. High sheen fabrics were used to give colours an opulent feel like silk, taffeta, satin acetate, lace, velvet and velour. Designers kept the one colour stratagem for maximum sway as witnessed in the Ralph Lauren, Gucci and Diane Von Furstenberg collections. Colours played the fundamental role in this trend and shades of jade and rich ruby red stood out, best seen in the creations of Marc Jacobs and Vanessa Bruno. Alberta Ferretti also showcased a fabulous collection. Sequins were used along with the hues for that extra zing, accomplishing a show stopping look. Dolce & Gabbana’s collection was equally impressive.

For my Pakistan

As Jewel colours have taken over from the brights of last season, there is a rich sumptuousness to autumn. If you are an intrepid soul then these tones can be worn for day time as well as for evenings as an alternative to black. I suggest, wearing one colour from head-to-toe for an exciting look and add sequins for a full impact. If fullon colour blocking is a step too far, tone it down by investing in a ruby or amethyst top with faded jeans. If that’s still too much, let your accessories do the sparkling, with clutch bags or lady-like heels in exquisite tones. Accessories can be used in royal shades of sapphire or garnet for that added zest.

Unwind and relax at Sunuba By Fatima Zehra Naqvi

T

Sunuba offers an impressive array of services, ranging from hair care, skin care and makeup to sauna and physiotherapy

he prospect of indulging in a luxurious spa and being pampered like royalty was a distant dream for me, due, primarily, to monetary constraints. But by an unexpected stroke of luck, I landed up at a local spa-salon and what an experience it turned out to be. Sunuba Spa and Rejuvenation Centre lives up to its name. Nestled behind KFC on Lahore’s MM Alam Road, one of the busiest hubs in the hustling metropolis, Sunuba, in stark contrast, is the epitome of serenity. The moment you shut the door behind you, the cacophony of noises resonating from Lahorites’ favourite food and shopping hotspot fade away and are replaced by Sunuba’s trademark tranquil ambience. From the foyer to the four storeys (two levels of salon and two of spa), it’s a far cry from being ostentatious and flashy. The mahogany interior, soft piped music, subtle lighting and immaculate interior instantly make you feel at home. The staff is genuinely amiable and accommodating, and I must add, exceptionally hospitable. Sunuba offers an impressive array of services, ranging from hair care, skin care and make-up to sauna and physiotherapy – all priced reasonably enough to not immediately frighten one away. Sunuba promises a great experience and superior quality. And it delivers both. Their popular OPI manicure-pedicure sticks to the basics, leaving behind nothing but bright, cleansed hands and feet. Owner Imrana Shahid, an approachable and congenial lady, personally overlooks the salon services. But the real surprise (read: treat) lies on the top two storeys. As you ascend the stairs, you are welcomed by soft lighting, beautiful floating candles and fresh rose petals. This is the spa section that offers therapeutic massages for stress reduction as well as for injury treatment. Their trained Filipino masseuse treated me to a rigorously relaxing massage after a pore-opening steam session and exfoliating Moroccan bath. You’ll enjoy the visage of state-of-the-art spa equipment contrasted with the earthly wooden interior and stone floor; it just adds to the soothing environment and makes you want to come back for more. Highly-recommended for all those who crave a break from their stressful lives. Rest assured, you will be in the best of hands. 114 I October 09 - 15, 2011

The Best of Rock

Here’s a list of the Top 20 rock albums coming out between October 2010 and October 2011. While the “Rock” genre is a huge multi-dimensional realm, I’ve kept my choices as mainstream as possible (with an exception or two). 20. Staind – Staind (***1/2) Essentials: Eyes wide open, Throw it all away, The bottom Staind manage to squeeze into the list, courtesy a self-titled album which is reminiscent of what they’ve been doing for over a decade. The formula is familiar, but the heaviness is up a few notches. 19. Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare (***1/2) Essentials: The congregation, I’ll bite your face off A sequel to 1975’s cult hit “Welcome to My Nightmare” the album can justifiably be called a summary of Cooper’s efforts as a Music Icon. 18. Edguy – Age of the Joker (***1/2) Essentials: Nobody’s hero, Rock of Cashel Humorous and melodic, backed staunchly by Sammet’s vocals – Edguy’s latest album gives the best of their past a run for its money. 17. Within Temptation – The Unforgiving (***1/2) Essentials: Shot in the dark, Stairway to the skies Habitually treading the fine line between rock and metal, the band throw more than pinch of pop into the mix to fuse together one of their very unique accomplishments. 16. In Flames – Sounds of a Playground fading (***1/2) Essentials: Darker times, Where the dead ships dwell, Ropes The quintessential trendsetters leave another paradigm for their imitators. It’s not one of their absolute highlights – but an In Flames album doesn’t necessarily have

116 I October 09 - 15, 2011

to be that to make its mark. 15. Seether – Holding onto things better left to fray (***1/2) Essentials: Fur cue, Here and now A one of a kind record and an assortment of genres that proves why Seether have a solid standing amongst the Who’s Who of hard rockers. 14. Anthrax – Worship Music (***1/2) Essentials: Earth on hell, The devil you know The sound of John Bush’s era is fronted by Joey Belladonna – Anthrax’s latest offering is redolent of the band’s peak compositions of the 80s. 13. R.E.M – Collapse into now (***1/2) Essentials: Mine smell like honey, Walk it back Ironic that a truly rejuvenating album was followed up with the news of R.E.M calling it quits six months later. It’s a parting gift from one of the most eminent rock bands of our generation – and they go on a high. 12. Blink-182 – Neighborhoods

(***1/2) Essentials: Ghosts on the dance floor, Heart’s all gone The pop-punk aces go down the mature lane on this one and do a prolific job. It’s a strong comeback and a confident step in the right direction. 11. Bush – The Sea of Memories (***1/2) Essentials: She’s a stallion, All night doctors We’ve all waited 10 long years for this and when every man and his dog predicted the band to come out rusty and outdated, they’ve sprung a massive surprise. Well worth the wait! 10. Opeth – Heritage (****) Essentials: The devil’s orchard, Slither This is atypical Opeth, as the band breaks into strange new grounds – a striking recored nonetheless from the legends of progressive metal. 09. Limp Bizkit – Gold Cobra (****) Essentials: Gold Cobra, Shark Attack, Killer in you A leaf out of the 90s – the apogee of NuMetal, with Durst and co. refusing to

evolve and in the shape of Gold Cobra – giving us an explosive justification. 08. Machine Head – Unto the Locust (****) Essentials: Darkness within, I am hell The epic “The Blackening” was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Machine Head have delivered – and how! 07. Destruction – Day of Reckoning (****) Essentials: Hate is my fuel, Armageddonizer, Day of Reckoning Easily the best album from the German Thrash Giants since 1990’s Cracked Brain – it’s a head-banging feast!! 06. Foo Fighters – Wasting Light (****) Essentials: Bridge Burning, White Limo This FF release springs a few surprises,

has quite a few top drawer numbers and while it doesn’t quite match their early masterpieces, it’s still a smashing record! 05. Dream Theater – A dramatic turn of events (****) Essentials: Lost not forgotten, Breaking all illusions Heaviness is partially supplanted by an emphasis on melody as Mike Mangini ensures that Mike Portnoy is hardly missed on drums. Another Dream Theater epic! 04. Kid Rock – Born Free (****) Essentials: Purple Sky, Care, Collide Kid Rock goes Country in an album that will take you on a nostalgic ride – one that is gripping and engaging throughout. 03. Mastodon – The Hunter (****1/2) Essentials: All the heavy lifting, The

hunter Back to the basics, back to their venerated forte – Mastodon continue to assert themselves as one of the paramount metal acts of all-time! 02. Alter Bridge – AB III (****) Essentials: Slip to the void, Coeur D’Alene, Fallout Initially under the Creed hangover, Alter Bridge continue to rubberstamp their individuality with an absolute humdinger of mainstream hard-rock. 01. My Chemical Romance – Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous killjoys (****1/2) Essentials: Na na na, Destroya, Scarecrow One of the standout albums of 2010 and it’s an intense and outlandish masterpiece. A complete thrill-a-minute ride!

The immensely popular television series completed another successful season between May 22 and July 17. While the 5-episode seasons had its dazzling moments, it didn’t quite meet the heights of earlier seasons. Mizraab and Sanam Marvi fared better in what was in all honesty a run-of-the-mill first episode with the Faraz Anwar led “Kuch Hai” plucking a striking chord and Sanam Marvi’s showing her vocal range in “Sighra Aaween Saanwal Yaar.” The second episode brought the season into life with legends like Ataullah Esa Khelvi and Sajjad Ali gripping us with “Ni Oothan Waale” and “Kir Kir”, brilliantly supported by acts from Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad and Asif

Hussain Samraat. The third episode couldn’t rise up to the bar set by the second, with none of Bilal Khan, Mole, Jal, or Ustaad Naseer-ud-din Saami making a noteworthy impact. The fourth episode brought back

the vigor, with Ataullah Esa Khelvi returning in typically unrivaled joie de vivre with “Pyaar Naal” well-supported by Sajjad Ali and Sanam Marvi’s duo “Rang Laaga” The season finale had a couple of decent performances by Samraat and Fareed Ayan & Abu Muhammad – two of the season’s finds – to round off a respectable season.

Coke Studio Season 4

2011 Grammy Awards Efforts of renowned global stars like Arcade Fire (Album: The Suburbs), Eminem (Rap Album: Recovery), Lady Gaga (Pop Album & Female Vocal Performance: The Fame Monster), Bruno Mars (Male Vocal Performance), Lady Antebellum (Record & Song: Need You Now) were recognized as they received the globally revered accolades. Johnny Legend and Usher more or less swept the R&B Awards with Fantasia’s “Bittersweet” earning her one for Vocal Performance as well. Jay-Z & Alicia Keys with “Empire State of Mind” and “The Blueprint 3” dominated the Rap category with Eminem’s “Recovery” standing out as well. The Rock Category ran the whole gamut of winners. Muse (Album: The Resistance), Paul McCartney (Solo Vocal: Helter Skelter), The Black Keys (Duo Vocal: Tighten Up), Neil Young

(Song: Angry World), New Fand (Hard Rock Performace:

Them Crooked Vultures), Iron Maiden (Metal Performance: El Dorado) and Jeff Beck (Instrumental: Hammerhead) all won. Lady Antebellum was all over the Country awards, owing to her superlative effort “Need You Know”. With all other categories abiding by the script, with a few surprises here and there, the attention now shifts towards 2012 and the quest to bag one of those gold-plated gramophone gilded trophies.

Abaan

Authentic Lebanese treat

By Sumeha Khalid

T

he newly-launched Abaan can be heralded as the first authentic Lebanese restaurant in Karachi. Although a few cafes have been offering Lebanese fare, but no such attempts has been as elaborate as Abaan! One of the best things about this place is its location. Situated on the main road on Khayaban-e-Jami, Defence, it offers easy access to customers. You will be spared the myriad rounds that one generally has to make in order to find a decent spot to park in one of the many densely populated commercial areas. Not only is parking not an issue but additionally, the serene surroundings make it an appealing choice for food connoisseurs. As you enter the building you are ushered to the lift that takes you to the first floor where Abaan is located. The ambience reflects true Lebanese style of furnishing and decoration with Lebanese decorative elements thrown in for an authentic feel. The minute you enter Abaan you are transported straight to the Middle East. The menu has a whole lot to offer to the customers. The chefs at the eatery use fresh, imported ingredients and tried-andtrue recipes to set Abaan’s menu apart. We began the meal with a trio of mezzeh (appetizers), including a silky chick pea Hummus, Labneh a cool and creamy Lebanese farmer’s cheese made from strained yogurt and flanked by cucumber slices, all served with crisp pita triangles. A side of Tabbouleh, a delicious and refreshing salad composed of bulgur wheat, fresh mint and parsley, tomatoes, onion, lemon and olive oil proved to be quite refreshing. While the Cheese Rolls were good, the Chicken Wings were not much to write home about. They tasted more like boiled wings rather than grilled ones.

120 I October 09 - 15, 2011

The entrees will spoil you for choice. There’s a wide variety to choose from. Kasbah, Shish Kebab, Shish Taouk, Shawarma, Mixed grill platter (ideal for meat-lovers comprising mutton chops, mutton kebabs, shish kebab, chicken kebab and shish taouk, served with yoghurt and garlic sauce), Charcoal Grilled Tiger Prawns, Grilled Fish and lots more. Seeing is believing and you have to pay this joint a visit to discover what the excitement is all about. If you desire a typical Lebanese treat then Abaan is definitely for you. To wash down the meal you can take your pick from the soft drinks or the authentic fresh Laban, Sherbet At Toot or Sherbat Al Ward. And how can a night out be complete without a befitting dessert? While Baklava is one of the most sought-after Lebanese desserts, you can even try Oum Ali, another special Lebanese dessert. In addition to these two favourites, Namoura(Lebanese semolina cake, with coconuts, almonds & honey), Mouhallabieh (Milk & cream pudding, topped with honey & fresh mixed nuts) and Knefeh (Riccota cheese baked with vermicelli & sugar syrup) are some more items for those with the sweet tooth. While going to Abaan is a fulfilling experience, there’s one area they need to look into. They need to incorporate a few dishes that are palatable for kids. Some might have viewed Pervez Iqbal’s decision to open a Lebanese restaurant

The ambience reflects true Lebanese style of furnishing and decoration with Lebanese decorative elements thrown in for an authentic feel. And the chefs at the eatery use fresh, imported ingredients and triedand-true recipes to set Abaan’s menu apart on Kh-e-Jami a gamble especially when restaurants are shutting their doors seemingly as fast as they open in present times. However, Iqbal is not one to be daunted. Rather he is a man who enjoys a challenge. And setting up a successful food joint surely is a challenge for this businessman who has been involved in everything from the décor, to finalising the menu. And that personal touch shows in every aspect of Abaan. Here’s a restaurant that’s definitely here to stay.

we skipped the starters and soup and directly went ahead with our selection of main dishes. A choice of poultry, seafood, beef steaks and a Thai menu was enough to confuse matters but everyone decided to stick to their guts. I chose to have Poulet Aux Pollo breast of chicken with spinach, mushrooms, cheese coated with crispy potatoes and cream. It gets a nine out of ten for fine presentation and the piping hot creamy sauce with a zing of herbs. My husband who is a fan of steaks ordered their highly recommended Tuscan-style sliced beef with rocket and parmesan cheese. The aroma and the taste were hard to resist and it was just done right to achieve that melt-in-mouth feel, according to him. The other two dishes that were ordered were Poulet Julienne Aux Pates (grilled strips with spaghettis with orange pepper sauce) and special stuffed Spanish chicken stuffed with olives, capers, mozzarella and French basil. My sister mentioned that the taste of her dish seemed authentic and my mother acknowledged that this was the best offering that she had had in ages. The interior of the place has been done tastefully with comfortable seating and a special mention should be made of the oil paintings which hang low from the wrought iron hanging frames. Two huge

Tiramisu (although a name of the famous Italian dessert) has a large menu catering to the taste buds of the food connoisseurs ranging from sophisticated Franรงoise ala French cuisine to the spicy oriental Thai flavours. Set in a typical Italian/ Parisian style with an extended courtyard surrounded by thick foliage, Tiramisu is a visit have food joint in town. We chose to visit the place at lunch time and it proved to be a fantastic experience. Each of us ordered a different dish with a bowl of salad to start with - which was shredded chicken with cucumber, onion, and mint with masaman dressing - that was enjoyed by all. Since everyone was looking forward to their main-coarse and were not in a mood to ruin their appetite,

The rendezvous would not have been complete without the savouring of their desserts which are especially popular in the sweet-tooth aficionados. Chocolate molten cake which takes about 20min to be served is their top offering along with warm apple pie mode, the usual chocolate fudge cake and assortment of coffees with a diverse range to select from. Especially popular in winters the coffee selection has latte, caramel, hazel nut, Columbian and Irish cream on their list of options. Tiramisu also offers some fine cocktails including margaritas and pina colada. The moderate-slightly steep price of 700-900 Rupees per main dish is somehow justified given the vast range of menu being offered and fine dining quality with an adequate serving size. Overall, the experience of eating at Tiramisu left a great taste in mouth and is a highly recommended place for anyone who wants to dine out with a touch of class.

Food, hangouts & more

By Sikander Ahmad Khan

A heavenly escape from the daily grind and the place to go to if you are craving quality and delicious indulgences that lead to an undeniable, one-of-a-kind experience. How it all began

Lahore has witnessed a recent mushrooming of coffee shops and tea houses. While all offer a distinct appeal, none of them top the taste, freshness and quality of Cinnabon, a real treat for sweet lovers and coffee connoisseurs. Conceptualized in 1985 by a father-son team, Rich and Greg Komen, Cinnabon’s warm delicious taste and luxurious, rich cinnamon smell transcends time and place, having successfully charmed customers in over 30 countries. They have become a worldwide phenomenon with a crave-appeal second to none, serving indulgent delights such as the famous Cinnabon Classic Roll along with the Minibon, Caramel Pecanbon, Chocobon & Cinnabon Stix as well as hand crafted espresso beverages and specialty beverages like the Mochalatta Chill and Chillattas from their “Cinnabar”. 126 I October 09 - 15, 2011

The Cinnabon hit

This franchise has been brought to Pakistan by Yasser Khawaja and has proved to be a breath of fresh air. “We’ve had a terrific response so far and are very excited about taking the refreshing and fun filled Cinnabon experience across the country,” says Yasser. Cinnabon bakeries all over the world have built an iconic brand based on a reputation for serving fresh, aromatic cinnamon rolls made with premium Indonesian cinnamon and topped with a sweet, rich, cream cheese based frosting. Each Cinnabon product is served hot out of the oven. The Cinnabon Classic Roll, warm dough filled with their legendary Makara Cinnamon, harvested straight out of Indonesia, and topped with their signature frosting, has been an instant

At the Cinnabar, you can immerse yourself in variety of hand-crafted beverages. Specialty beverages include the Mochalatta Chill, an all-time favorite, and the delightfully smooth frozen Chillattas. The Mochalatta Chill combines coffee, chocolate and ice, and my personal favorite Chillata is the Tropical Blast. Coffee lovers can let the Cinnabon baristas tailor make your favorite espresso beverages, made using pure Arabica beans and served hot, blended or over ice. success. For the nuts that crave nuts, they offer the Caramel Pecanbon, a delectable variant of the Classic Roll topped with pecans and drizzled with rich caramel. For the chocoholics, they have the Chocobon- oozing with chocolate and topped with cream cheese and chocolate frosting. For those of you who prefer smaller portions there is also the Minibon, a smaller version of these rolls. The Cinnabon Stix, brushed with fine sugar and Makara Cinnamon, are also worth trying if you’re in the mood for something less sweet. For added pleasure, dip them in cream cheese or caramel frosting. You can also share the joy with your friends and family by purchasing these yummy rolls to go in CinnaPacks. 128 I October 09 - 15, 2011

Cinnabon blew the world away 25 years ago when they created the world’s greatest cinnamon roll. They have now kicked off the next 25 years and beyond by introducing their cupcakes, available in the three flavors: Chocolate Passion, Vanilla Bliss & Red Velvet. Cinnabon believes that “they have reinvented the cupcake’ and I must say that I, at least, believe they are right! They have also introduced breakfast, served from 8 am up until 12:30 pm, and panini sliders. Some of the rather notable savories include the egg and cheese sandwich, roast beef and smoked turkey panini slider, all a must try. These are made using the same premium Cinnabon dough.

The Cinnabon ambiance: The Cinnabon Bakery Café located in Gulberg 3, on Mian Mehmood Ali Kasuri road, offers a stylish and modern café ambience with large windows allowing an outside view. These wonderful products are freshly baked right in front of your eyes which brings an air of homeliness to the place. They are also one of the first to use LED lighting throughout their café “in an effort to conserve energy” according to Yasser. They have also recently opened their second branch in Phase 3, DHA at 181/1 Y-block. No matter what occasion, Cinnabon is guaranteed to sweeten your day and put a smile on your face. Bottom line: Cinnabon is totally worth the indulgence.
