LSA AWASH PAKISTAN By Fashionista Fatima

The Glitz, The Glamour, The Glitterati! Lux Style Awards has been paying homage to show business & recognizing excellence of professionals in Film, TV & Music from 11 years. The formal ceremony at which the Awards of Merit are presented is the most esteemed award ceremony in Pakistan. This year’s red carpet threw up a mixed bag of sartorial statements, some unexpected hits & some disappointing losers, but a few clear trends. Fashionista Fatima will sail you through our “On Trend” list with apt analysis.

The Star Of The Night – Ali Zafar Ali Zafar became the centre of attraction at the Lux Style Awards as he arrived in typical Ali Zafar vogue and his Omar Farooq tuxedo got noticed on the red carpet. The show of high-voltage allure was subjugated by the presence of Ali Zafar. He received the award for the Best Music Album for “Jhoom” and enlightened the evening with a tribute to the late King of Ghazal Mehdi Hassan, a medley of hit songs. Ali Zafar & Humaima Malik gave a performance of an invigorating finale that ended on the high notes of Madhubala. All in all Ali Zafar proved that he is the only “STAR” that can entertain for hours through his exhilarating performance.

Master Of Ceremonies – Ahmad Ali Butt Ahmad Ali Butt - the jack of all trades hosted the event & not only he carried the whole show on his witty wings but also broke all traditional rules of hosting. Looking sharp & on trend in Omar Farooq’s peak-lapel tuxedo & Tom Ford accessories, Ahmed gave a whole new meaning to hosting the biggest

award show of the country. His LSA rap number sung on the tune of ‘Smack That’ gave spectators hysterical fits. Ahmed kept audience thoroughly entertained & alive by seasoning the script with his frenzied humour & electrifying performance. The man is the monarch of Theatre, Fashion, Film, Television & Music. A little bird told us that we might be seeing him hosting a morning show very soon. Watch out IFFA & OSCARS we got the BUTT POWER

The Men Of The Evening - ON Trend 1. Adnan Malik looked fantastic in Deepak Pervani. This is how all men should arrive at the award ceremonies even if they don’t have the honour of winning the best music video director award. 2. Deepak Pervani looked ravishing in Deepak Pervani. His offbeat style sets him apart from all the other men on the red carpet. Deepak & Ahmad carried the Black on Black look with precision 3. Tapu Javeri was a bracing sight to watch with the fluorescent tie. It added a rakish vibe to his impeccably neat look. Fluorescent hues are in trend & Tapu pulled of this endearing look benevolently.

The Women Of The Evening - On Trend This year the dresses, at least among the strapless brigade, seemed spectacular. Many got it right by following 2012 colours, such as metallics, golds & family of white and this seasons strapless cut, but many failed to follow trends in the attempt of playing it safe.

1. After a few years in the red carpet wilderness,

Music Winners Best Album Jhoom – Ali Zafar Song of the Year Woh Humsafar Tha – Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch Best Original Sound Track Woh Humsafar Tha – Singer: Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch Best Music Video Director Adnan Malik – Mera Bichra Yaar Best Emerging Talent - Music Bumbu Sauce – ‘Masterjee Bumbu’ collected the award.

awards season can welcome back the strapless gown, as toted by Frieha Altaf who’s metallic gold Maheen Kareem gown was accessorised to perfection with a knockout hairstyle & Sherzade diamonds. 2. Amina Sheikh stole the show with her metallic gold Maheen Kareem garb, one of the more modern looks of the night. She trailed the colour & cut of the season with aptness. 3. Amina Ilyas’s flawless white Zahir Abbas ensemble was one of the notable mascots in a sea of strapless gowns. Her chic styling won her the third spot on our list.

The Fabulous Humaima Malik looked stunning in off white Armani array, Asma Mumtaz was a welcome sight in fabulous HSY cream concoction & Saba Qamar knocked the socks off the competition in her figure-hugging Mahid Khawar cream gown. These girls did not follow the cut of the season but we will give them bursting marks on the colour & fabulous styling

The Fuss-Free These are our kind of girls who don’t need to be dripping in flashy jewels, smothered by an

enormous bouffant or held into their outfits with rolls of wig-tape. Fareshteh Aslam in Shehla Chatoor, Rabia Butt in Fahad Hussain & Nabila Maqsood not only they scored a mega hit with their ensembles but also with their effortless panache. Simply genius

The Individualists Expect to see the individualists propping up a few worst dressed lists, but certainly not ours. They are confident to pull off what most people cant. Ayaan Ali in Deepak Pervani fancy array & minimal make-up looked endearing.

Relationship Retreat

Don’t know if I’ll make it By Dr. Mehreen Nawaz Khan

A

black Porsche Panamera leaps off the edge of the Golden Gate Bridge soaring into the backdrop of a June sunset. The passengers, an elderly couple dressed in their finest blacks, are recovered hours later from a serene San Francisco Bay. Man sixty-ish looking is revealed to aged 99. The woman is a year younger. They look peaceful as though in a mid summer night’s dream. In his tailored suit pocket is a handmade ceramic tile, tiny and bearing a tinier fingerprint that reads.” HAPPY 80th ANNIVERSARY “. So how many couples fizzle out in such glorious candor? None! People separate, divorce and die on their spouses before you can say ninety nine every single day! The elementary question is, “how does on go on alone?”But before turning to those moral and mental aspects of the matter which present the greatest difficulties, let the inquiry begin by mastering more elementary problems. What phases do their mind travels through to finally gain endless energy and acceptance of the status quo. The energy elementary for moving on...

DENIAL OF FORENSIC EVIDENCE : If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, we must be open to the idea that it might actually not be a monkey. As denial and hallucinations are pronounced married by the minister of optimism we

must realize this union is denial in a wedding facade. The shock subsides and we realize, it’s done. We are alone. At least for now...

INCENSED TO INSANITY : The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning. Anger, however, must follow as a funeral pyre of negative emotions, where the mind expresses its involuntary rage on the loss of this companionship that should have gone on...

TRADE TREATY : Our mind in overdrive gives solutions to this problem by reverting to the past and raising peace offerings for the loneliness to go away. We bargain with what we have in exchange for what we lost. We try solutions after solutions, and then we move on...

SADNESS : The fire melts into ice. We are cleansed and we feel listless. We grieve and hurt and cry. We know our pain is real. Self pity engulfs our being and we wallow in the pain we were handed. And then, we move on yet again... ACCEPTANCE : Every Sherlock Holmes story has one marvelous scene. A silver lining to the dark cloud. Similarly life with its ravenous appetite for the lover gives a pass to the bereaved. A coupon that reads acceptance. Sweet, peaceful and glorious acceptance. It is where the old leave and the new is welcomed. It is life itself and then we just move on again to greener pastures, bluer skies and brighter sands of time.

A Muslim perspective on the Muslim world

The two issues of the journal in hand deal with ‘the plurality and diversity’ of an expansive but ‘thriving area of reporting, creative writing, poetry and scholarship’

By Syed Afsar Sajid

T

he Muslim Institute London has lately embarked on publication of ‘a set of four volumes of ideas and issues showcasing groundbreaking thinking on Islam and what it means to be a Muslim in a rapidly changing, increasingly interconnected world’ in the shape of a serialised journal titled Critical Muslim. The avowed aim of the venture is to ‘examine issues within Islam, and Muslim societies, providing a Muslim perspective on the great debates of contemporary times, and promoting dialogue, cooperation and collaboration between ‘Islam’ and other cultures, including ‘the West’, and thus creating ‘a space for debate between Muslims and between Muslims and others, on religious, social, cultural and political issues concerning the Muslim world’, in what is claimed to be an ‘innovative, thought-provoking and forward-looking’ manner. Ziauddin Sardar and Robin YassinKassab have jointly edited the two volumes. The former who was born in Pakistan, is also editor of monthly Futures and Chair of the Muslim Institute and Visiting Professor at the School of Arts, The City University London, and is regarded as a ‘critical polymath’ interested in a wide area of

44 I July 22 - 28, 2012

subjects like Islamic studies, culture, futures studies, information, science, radio, TV, column-writing, art and literary criticism, and critical theory. An author of over 45 books, he is considered a pioneering thinker on contemporary Islam. Born in Britain to a Syrian father and English mother, Robin Yassin-Kassab, the co-editor of the work, is author of a novel The Road from Damascus and in recent past, has worked as a journalist in Pakistan too. He now lives in Scotland and also co-edits the website Pulse. The four volumes of the journal are separately sub-titled as ‘The Arabs are alive’, ‘The idea of Islam’, ‘Fear and loathing’, and ‘Pakistan?’ Every issue of the journal embodies a theme which is obviously concerned with the politics, economics, culture, law, and literature of the Muslim world. The contributors, as per the editorial claim, are ‘convinced and sceptical Muslims, religious and cultural Muslims, and non-Muslims’ also. The two issues of the journal in hand deal with ‘the plurality and diversity’ of an expansive but ‘thriving area of reporting, creative writing, poetry and scholarship’. The first of the series keeps its focus on the contemporary Arab uprisings while the second incorporates contemporary debates and issues

related to Islam and the Muslim world seeking its ‘social, cultural and political transformation’. The first volume bears four parts viz., ‘The Arabs are alive’, ‘Art and letters’, ‘Reviews’, and ‘Et cetera’. Apart from the editors, major contributors to the issue are Abdelwahab El-Affendi, Fadia Faqir, Jamal Mahjoub, Shadia Safwan, Jasmin Ramsey, Jerry Ravetz, Nizar Qabbani, Tawfiq Zayyad, Naomi Foyle, Taus Makhacheva, Rachel Holmes, Rose Aslan, Bilal Tanweer, S. Parvez Manzoor, Muhammad Idrees Ahmad, Samia Rahman, Aasia Nasir, and Merryl Wyn Davies. The theme of the contents of this issue seeks to disclaim the ironic intonation of the Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani’s lines: ‘In short/We wear the cape of civilisation/But our souls live in the stone age.’ The second volume is split into five parts titled ‘The idea of Islam’, ‘Essays’, ‘Art and Letters’, ‘Reviews’, and ‘Et cetera’. Some notable contributors to this issue, aside from the editors, are Bruce Lawrence, Michael Muhammad Knight, Soha Al-Jurf, Carool Kersten, Ben Gidley, Stuart Sim, Andy Simons, Hassan Blasim, Mimi Khalvati, Said Adrus, Aamer Hussein, Ehsan Masood, Hassan Mahamdallie and Vinay Lal. The contents of this issue encompass a thoughtful debate and

The theme of the contents to disclaim the ironic intonation of the Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani’s lines: ‘In short/We wear the cape of civilisation/But our souls live in the stone age’ commentary on topics like controversy, unorthodoxy, misogyny and ‘heresy’ in the context of its major theme – the idea of Islam. Quite obviously ‘it doesn’t so

much aim to generate a new discourse as to enrich those which already exist in Muslim societies and globally’ and thus it promotes the desired ‘dialogue,

cooperation and collaboration’ between Islam and other cultures of the world.

1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/4 teaspoons fresh ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions:

1.Heat peanut oil in a large deep pot to 350°F (do not fill more than half full--you don’t want a hot-oil spill-over accident!). 2.For sauce mixture: in a mediumsized bowl, beat the eggs with the water. 3.Add hot sauce and whisk together well. 4.Pour this mixture into a large plastic zip-top bag. 5.For seasoning mixture: In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder. 46 I July 22 - 28, 2012

Dredging mixture:

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 6.For dredging mixture: In a another bowl, mix flour, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. 7.Rinse and pat dry chicken pieces with a paper towel. 8.Cut breast pieces in half across ribs. 9.Sprinkle chicken generously on both sides with seasoning blend. 10.Drop a few chicken pieces of chicken into bag of sauce mixture and squish around to coat thoroughly. 11.One piece at a time, roll chicken in flour mixture and drop into hot oil. 12.Don’t crowd chicken pieces--I

cook about half the chicken at a time. 13.Fry chicken until brown and crisp. 14.Drain on paper toweling. 15.Dark meat will take about 14 minutes, white meat about 10 minutes. 16.Remember smaller pieces cook faster than the larger ones. 17.You can check for doneness by piercing to the bone in the thickest part with a fork. 18.If the juices run clear, it is done.

LEO VS. CAPRICORN LION EATS THE GOAT By Mariam Aftab

I

n the political history of Pakistan, it is seen twice that the Lion has eaten up the goat. That sounds strange but it is a fact. On July the 5th, 1977, Gen. Zia-ul-Haq overthrew the elected Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and hanged him on basis of a controversial death case. Likewise on the 12th of October 1999, Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf staged a coup d’ etat against Nawaz Sharif. Narrating the historical events with the reference of Lion and Goat is really something strange and it would be more interesting and surprising to know that both the Generals, mentioned above are Leo’s and

48 I July 22 - 28, 2012

both the Prime Ministers, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif are Capricorn by stars. This coincidence of the facts have made me realize that the impact of stars on personalities and eventually on the facts and events is same under the same circumstance. I am 100 per cent sure if Zia-ul-Haq had a different star, he wouldn’t have succeeded in overthrowing the powerful, intelligent and clever Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Similarly, if Nawaz Sharif was of different birth star, he would have resisted Pervez Musharraf instead of fleeing away. This is a mere coincidence, which I am sure is not found in any other world history. The element of Capricorn is Earth

In the astrological world the star Quwat / Leo is depicted by a Lion and Aftab / Capricorn with a Goat. The animals clearly depict their qualities.

and in Eastern Tarot it is known as Aftab, meaning the rise of a new Sun, dawn. It is the pull of the ambition that drives you to begin all over again. Those belonging to this category of star are responsible, conscious, cautions, patient persistent, disciplined, precise and calculating, ambitious and determined. The negative aspects of their personalities contains rigid and timid behaviour, over-critical and detached attitude and are always manipulative and controlling and are not trustworthy. The virtues of Capricorns are such that there will always be people for and against them. Many admire them, many dislike them. A well-developed Capricorn has his/her eyes set on the heights of power, prestige and authority. If we have a closer look at the personality of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif both had the same positive and negative characteristics in their personality. Both in order to make their government more stable and strong, could do anything far beyond. Making full use of their positive characteristics they made their lives vulnerable but the negative

aspects of their personalities totally over shadowed their qualities, and the opposition made use of their weakness. Capricorns have a deep romantic nature, but they do not show it straight away. They are cool, matter of fact and not especially emotional. They often show their love in practical ways. It is difficult to get to know them. They are deep, introverted and like to keep their own counsel. Capricorns do not like to reveal their innermost thoughts. Their basic ambition is to gain power and success. This greed eventually leads to their downfall. Both the cappy Prime Ministers did the same. During the days of Ayub Khan, Bhutto was designated as Information & Communication minister, then he became foreign minister and after that he established his own political party Pakistan Peoples Party. When his party won the elections he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan and gain popularity throughout the world. During his regime he made many reforms for the betterment of his nation. At that time he had to face resentment of many industrialists but he did what he felt like. Bringing the Muslim World together in the Islamic Summit Conference, 1974, he developed the concept of Third world which gained popularity and eventually in fulfilling his dream he did everything fair and foul. Then came a day when his own appointed CNC dethroned him, imprisoned and finally hanged him. At last, the story that started from 1964 ended after 13 years in 1977. Now lets view Nawaz Sharif. During the days of Zia-ul-Haq, he was a Provincial Finance Minister then he became the Chief Minister in 1988 and then after winning the elections he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan. During the days of his power he did everything which he could in order to fulfill his ego. He made enemies through his wrong policies and again came a day in history of Pakistan when another Lion ate the goat. This time the Lion was Pervaiz Musharraf and the goat Nawaz Sharif.

The Horoscope chart of Capricorn, their career health, attitude and the detailed analysis, strongly goes with the personality of Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. Both of them till the end of their career remain healthy and gained success. Blessed their friends and acquaintances with key jobs and high posts. Equally developing their respective, properties and concerned areas. But in the race of going and leaping ahead brought them downfall and both became, the victim of fate through Gen. Zia-ul-Haq and Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf. Gen. Zia and Gen. Musharraf both are Leos – The Lion, The element of Leo is fire and in Tarot it is Quwat which represents power, strength and domination. Those with Leo personality are royal. –Leo’s rule with benevolent grace and in the best interests of others. They have a powerful presence; indeed, they are powerful people. Subordinates, friends and family are the loyal and trusted subjects. Their generosity and benevolence make them popular in their circles of friends and family. Their confidence and hospitable nature make them equally popular and lovable. Together with these aspects their dominating and chauvinistic attitude with selfish and egocentric nature make them ruthless and unethical sometimes. In order to gain power and remain in power they can crush anyone coming in their way. That’s exactly what Gen. Zia-ulHaq and Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf did. Being a Leo/Lion they crushed their political enemies through strength and power both superseded their seniors and became Chief of Army Staff and after that winning the trust of their prime ministers, both cheated them. Gen. Zia-ul-Haq dethroned and arrested Bhutto and finally hanged him. Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf abandoned Nawaz Sharif government and banished him from Pakistan. The similarities of characteristics in the case of Leo personalities are the same and the incidents and situations are exactly the same. The similarities of incidence has created history where twice a Lion has eaten up a goat.
