Anna: Jake, you’ve been staring at that laptop all morning. Be careful you don’t become a computer addict, like me! Jake: Oh sorry, Anna. Did you want to use it? Anna: That’s all right, thanks. But give your eyes a rest for a bit. I would suggest going for a walk, if it were a bit sunnier. But do you fancy getting a coffee? Jake: Sounds good. [fade out ... fade back in. Anna and Jake are in a café] Anna: So, what were you doing anyway? Still researching your Australian holiday? Jake: Kind of ... actually, I’m trying to find a part‐time job. Anna: Why’s that? Worried about getting bored of all those white, sandy beaches? Jake: Oh, there’s no danger of that! It’s just that a job might fund a trip to Kangaroo Island while I’m there, and as I’ve already spent loads on flights, I could do with the extra cash. Restaurant work is out, though. I’ve already got enough work experience for the catering course, so it’d be good to have a change. Anna: Did you hear about the advert for the ‘best job in the world’ in Queensland? Jake: Yes, I think I remember that ... wasn’t that for an island caretaker? Anna: That’s it! The Queensland tourist board advertised the job to help publicize the island. They were quite shocked when more than thirty thousand people applied, from the USA to Spain! I remember, a British guy got the job. Just imagine, for six months, all he had to do was sail, snorkel, swim, take photos of the beautiful animals and write a weekly blog. He didn’t even have to cook or clean. He had his own golf buggy – no driving license needed. And all for £68,000, with free flights, too! Jake: Amazing, although I’m not sure I’d enjoy it. Anna: Really? Why not? Jake: Well, I’m not a big nature lover, although I don’t mind animals. The thing is, I like people, and I think I’d get lonely. But writing a weekly blog isn’t exactly hard work, and the publicity does sound tempting! Imagine, you’d get to be famous, just for going on holiday. Anna: Oh, I’d hate that. Being interviewed by journalists ... terrifying! Anyway, I’m afraid you’re too late for that position. Jake: Yes, but I’ve found some really cool ones. The South Australian tourism board are really keen for eighteen to thirty year olds to get working holiday visas, so they’re advertising all kinds of exotic‐ sounding jobs. Anna: Such as? Jake: Oh, like ‘koala catchers’, who try to keep the animal population down near Adelaide. Or they need people to taste beer and check its quality. Anna: Hmm! Jake: And they need builders to make new homes for penguins, or ‘roo poo’ collectors – they, uh, deal with the mess kangaroos leave behind. Anna: Euch! Jake: Or shark personality profilers. Anna: What on earth do they do? Jake: They go out on boats and attach small electronic tags to the sharks. They don’t have to get in the water with them! Researchers then use satellites to chart the sharks’ movements, and find out their typical habits, preferred feeding spots, and so on. The taggers can read the final reports, and often get thanked in the final credits. Anna: Sounds interesting ... but dangerous. Jake: Yes. I decided against that one! Right now, I’m thinking about doing some farm work instead. You know, picking fruit, that kind of thing. It’s not as glamorous as the other jobs, so there won’t be as many

applicants for vacancies. The pay could be better, too, but on the plus side, you can travel from farm to farm, so you’re not always stuck in one place. And I’ve always fancied learning how to drive a tractor! Anna: Sounds good. Well, good luck! I’m quite envious, actually. This summer I’m staying here, which is cool, but I’m meant to be helping out at the family restaurant, which isn’t. Luckily, my cousin is coming over to stay for a bit – not the one from France who I fell out with last year – the nice one from Ireland! Hopefully, the weather should be good, too. Not so much rain this year, which makes a change. Still it won’t be half as hot as Australia. You’re going to come back with an amazing tan! Jake: I guess so – well, especially ... [fade]
