••••••> Curbing the Crab Author: Lousie smith Statistics have it that breast cancer claims about 1,260 in New York City annually and still 25% of women aged 40 and above have not yet had a recent mammography. The New York department of Health and Mental Hygiene insists that to aid their efforts in curbing the cancer every woman aged 40 or more should get a mammogram as soon as possible. Any NYC gynecologist is qualified to help with this procedure. Moreover, the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) offers a mammography at little or no cost at all. There are also several websites being opened in New York City offering free mammograms, all year round, to persons without adequate health insurance, through the New York City Breast Cancer Program. Now what is mammography? Mammography is the procedure in which lowdose amplitudeX rays examine the human breast and thus acts as a diagnostic tool. The purpose or use of mammography is like an early detection of possible breast cancer, generally through the detection of micro calcifications. Mammography has been proven to reduce mortality by providing an early warning. No other test has been found which reduces the risk, but becoming aware of the changes and examination are considered necessary parts of regular breast care. Where global statistics go, 1.5 million people will be told by their doctors that they have contracted breast cancer, in 2010 alone. 1 in 4 women with cancer have breast cancer and most of these women live in the developed countries. Parts of Australia and North America have been diagnosed as having the most number of cases and these numbers are alarmingly high. The health departments of all countries should follow the initiative of the NYC breast cancer treatment program, as the most prevalent of all types of cancer is this type. It hits women within the age groups 30 to 39 so an early medical or regular selfexamination is absolutely essential for early treatment of this disease. As with most forms of cancer, breast cancer is completely curable if diagnosed early. There has been a virtual explosion in the medical field offering a plethora of treatment options ranging from surgery, radiation, anti estrogen therapy to chemotherapy. These options however are not without sideeffects ranging from mild to severe. Thus one may also opt for holistic medicine and unconventional methods like meditation, acupuncture or even yoga. Clinical trials are ongoing for more advanced and effective drugs. So worry less and remember that in this case—knowledge is better for a cure.
