Structures built out of still have a lot of advantages over structures of asphalt, vinyl or good old wood. For starters, steel buildings are cheaper to construct than concrete or wooden structures. Why? It is because steel can be prefabricated and the individual parts can be easily assembled. The structures have all their pressure points and support points made out of this metal so they are stronger and less prone to damage. Steel sustains no rotting, termites or mildew caused to wood by absorption of water. Steel is quite flexible and so it can withstand minor quakes. Also, they do not combust or are bent or broken by hurricane force winds. Steel buildings use basically two types of steel—stainless and galvanized. There are 3 types (Austenitic, Ferritic and Martenistic) of stainless steel and up to sixty grades depending on what metals have been used in the alloy. This knowledge is important when working with roll forming. Stainless steel is popular because its name says it all—it is stainless, and is resilient to corrosion and/or rust. Stainless steel alloys have chromium as an important ingredient to protect against most corrosive substances. The metal is about 10.5% in the alloy and it forms a layer of chromium oxide on the steel to protect it from damage. The other type of steel in discussion is galvanized steel which also used in roll forming. The advantage of galvanized steel is that it is cheaper than stainless steel, yet is effective nonetheless. Galvanized steel is formed by coating steel with layers of zinc. The reason is that zinc does not rust. The galvanization process permanently bonds the zinc with the steel; hence the protection against corrosion is permanent too. Also, this kind of steel can be recycled many times. Galvanized has multiple uses like in roofing, houses, bicycles, cars etc. This steel is also resilient to damage by most corrosive substances. Galvanized steel is also employed in a number of industrial uses. The Purin roll form, for example, is done with the help of this steel. It can be found in drainage pipes, sidings etc. In most types of building materials, this is the most inexpensive and durable. It can be manufactured in different sizes according to its purpose and can also be painted. Steel is fast replacing old building materials due to its availability, strength and flexibility and is thus becoming the first choice of builders worldwide.
